building a better bay area for a safe and secure future, this is abc7 news. a week-long i.c.e. operation ended with more than 100 undocumented immigrants arrested throughout the state. some arrests took place in sanctuary cities right here in the bay area where immigration advocates are reporting an increase in fear in the undocumented community. good morning, everybody, it's saturday october 10th, i'm liz kreutz. thanks for joining us. we're going to have much more in just a moment on those ice raids and arrests. first we're going to take a look at the weather. >> a lot of cloud cover out loo little bit of mist and drizzle. live doppler 7 widening the view and this is the rain we're not

going to see. we could see maybe a few drops, a few sprinkles, an isolated shower, but overall unfortunately missing us. 56 in sunnyvale and mountain view. it is 56 in novato. 57 on the coast. as we look at the current conditions for the flasz figlas this is what we like to see. probably one of the last days we're going to see high humidity and temperatures. the winds are going to shift as soon as tomorrowme. right now air quality is good around the bay area. a spare the air alert, it looks like that could be extended into your sunday. a live look outside, lots of clouds around today dominating the sky again, and notice temperatures in the 60s and 70s. so with the clo evud cover we'l see numbers where they should be this time of the year. overall, lots of cloud cover and temperatures where they should be for mid-october. things change dramatically as we

get into sunday and the week ahead. stay tuned. immigrant communities are on edge this morning following i.c.e. raids that we mentioned across the state including here in the bay area. abc7 news reporter luz pena reports some are calling the arrests politically motivated. >> he's getting ready to go in. >> reporter: this is one of 125 statewide apprehensions i.c.e. reported this week, all undocumented immigrants with prior convictions. >> this is totally inappropriate, especially during a pandemic. >> san mateo county supervisor david canapa denounced these arrests and called them a political tactic 25 days from the election. >> this is purely about politics and purely about the administration appealing to their base of voters. >> i.c.e. categorized their operation as one free of politics and responded in part. i.c.e. takes many factors into account when targeting and arresting individuals including

their criminal and immigration history. the latest arrests reported here in the bay area by i.c.e. took place in this apartment complex in daly city. the person arrested was a 29-year-old from guatemala with several duis. another arrest took place in san jose. yolanda chavez described the agonizing moments when i.c.e. agents tried to enter her daughter's workplace in the south bay. now her daughter is refusing to go outside. >> they're not showing a judicial warrant to families to conduct an arrest. they're basically printing on a paper and stamping it and saying we're taking >> reporter: imfwrags advocates are saying i.c.e. ais tricking people to giving up information. >> 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we have advocates ready to respond. >> reporter: in sflan francisco luz pena. >> if you or someone you know is

having an immigration issue, you can take action and find an ally at abc7news.com/takeaction. click the human rights section. developing naews now, president trump plans to give a speech from a white house balcony today at an event with 2,000 invitees. the president says he's no longer taking medication to fight the coronavirus. trump says he was tested yesterday, but results of that test have not been released. this comes as abc news con fifi that two more members of the white house residence tested positive. we'll have more on today's event coming up in our next half hour. now let's get to covid-19, the number of daily coronavirus infections is headed in the wrong direction across the country. there were more than 350,000 new cases reported worldwide yesterday. that is a new daily record. california had a little more than 3,800 diagnosed cases. that's about 800 higher than the daily average. the 14-day positivity rate here

in california is at 2.6%. it's a good indicator of the tr transmission rate. >> even though we are lucky to have a late summer, once we hit winter, we're going to have issues once that weather comes in. >> dining outdoors during this time of the year can be very unpredictable as a lot of us know, so in an effort to build a better bay area, san jose and the silicon valley organization are teaming up with doordash to help restaurants prepare. abc7 reporter amanda dell castillo explains how the money will be a critical lifeline as the weather returns. >> reporter: we're still months away from the official start of the winter season, but small business owners know it's never too early to begin preparing, especially during the pandemic. >> even though we are lucky to have sort of a late summer, once we hit winter we're going to have some issues once that weather comes in. >> reporter: bad weather behind

rachel kaiser's push for $5,000 in grant money meant to help with heating tents and more. >> for the quote we got for our tent, it doesn't quite cover it. i would say it's about 60% of what we'd need. that would help us with any grant we could get. >> reporter: on october 16th, restaurants can apply to receive part of the $150,000 being dedicated to san jose. doordash, the mayor's office and the silicon valley organization partnering to provide a little relief. >> at the end of the day, what we really need is a significant amount of federal investment if we're going to be able to keep folks afloat through this pandemic. >> reporter: doordash is making these grants available in select cities across the u.s. in the bay area, that includes san francisco and san jose. the company said in part, this initiative will provide critical financial support to keep restaurants going through the cold weather adding our city's restaurants are finally starting to move forward, and we have to help them maintain the momentum. the silicon valley organization

adding the move means economic growth for san jose and a small step forward for small business. >> i'm very grateful for doordash's contribution, but the truth is that we're going to need many, many hands to lift this village up and to be able to help other small businesses survive this winter season. >> reporter: grant recipients are expected to be notified by the end of december. on the peninsula stanford's football team began its preseason practices at woodside high school. the cardinal are working out in woodside because right now santa clara county is not allowing on campus practices at stanford because of covid-19 restrictions. finan fitness clubs now have the okay to open in alameda county. 24 hour finance welcomtness wel

its members. officials with the chain say they're closely polling official health guidelines and have their own additional claeeaning protocols. club managers will also be keeping a head count limiting occupancy. stran francisco needs to rethink its permitting process as part of its economic recovery. the city's economic recovery task force says it needs to be simplified so that small businesses can launch quicker.a cannabis dispensary that just opened. the owner says she started the pro process in 2017. another recommendation i the city to keep the park lites that have popped up for indoor dining. >> i think it was one of like the better things that happened with covid. >> the report also mentions keeping an eye on empty office space and hotels. it suggest turning some of it into housing.

. protesters will gather today to call for justice for a man shot and killed by a napa sheriff's deputy this week. 47-year-old juan garcia of napa died after being shot during a traffic stop late monday night. the sheriff's office says garcia got out of the car and approached the deputy while keeping a hand behind his back. when asked to show that hand, he didn't. the deputy fearing a gunshot fist. his family says garcia was shot eight times. the sheriff's office says they will release body camera footage next week and the protest w n's at 1:00 p.m. a new report finds that drug overdose deaths in san francisco have already surpassed last year's staggering number. the medical examiner's office says around 470 people have died from accidental drug overdoses in just the first eight months

of the year. that averages to about two deaths every single day. fentanyl is to blame for most of these fatalities. last year there were 441 overdose deaths. the report says san francisco could see 700 overdose deaths by the end of this year. and san francisco unified has dropped a bomb shell proposal. the board announced that they may switch an elite high school's admission process to a lottery system. abc news reporter kate larson spoke to emotional parents and a school board member about what the future may hold for lowell high school. >> lowell high school in san francisco's sunset district is a nationally recognized school, can you notally students are admitted based on grades and test scores. but because of the pandemic, grades and scores have mostly been eliminated, so the proposal is that all entering freshmen would have an equal opportunity to attend through the public school lottery system. >> this is to me an exciting opportuni opportunity. >> reporter: gabriella lopez is a former teacher and vice president of the san francisco board of education.

on october 20th the board will vote on an admission policy change for one year, but. >> would you like to see lowell be a part of san francisco's general lottery system beyond this school year into the future? >> yes, and in any future vote if that comes up, i will vote yes. >> reporter: right now most of lowell's students are asian-american. >> one thing that i've been hearing from the actual student body at lowell is more representation in the african-american community, of course, and the latino community. >> it's been our family's dream for him to attend this school. he lives within walking distance to this school, he, you know, attended lake shore elementary, which is directly next deer. >> row wee na's son is in 8th grade and has always wanted to attend lowell, his father's alma mater. >> i'm feeling right now that the hard work that my son has really strived to achieve was all for nothing. >> reporter: fontano says she has little faith in sfc's

lottery son after her son didn't get into any of his middle school choices. >> i'm choked up. we're just trying to do the best for our children. >> challenging times for so many people right now. next week we want to let you know that we will have a report card on schools in the bay area. our building a better bay area education team will look at virtual learning and for those who have returned to class what in-person classes look like right now. we're also going to hear from teachers and parents about their biggest fra biggest frustrations and what is working. fire investigators have seized equipment belonging to pg&e as it looks into the cause of the zog fire in shasta county. the fire started at the end of september and has killed four people. pg&e recently emerged from bankruptcy caused by several devastating wildfires caused by its utility equipment. the utility released a statement, quote, saying we

recognize the tragic losses sustained as a result of this year's fire season and are thankful as always for the efforts of the first responders who have worked tirelessly to contain the fires and protect the lives and property of california residents. meanwhile, in the north bay firefighters are making headway on the glass fire. containment is now up to 78%. the wildfire has burned more than 67,000 acres or about 105 square miles. this has been a destructive wildfire destroying nearly 700 homes in napa and sonoma county. cal fire expects to have the fire fully contained in a couple of weeks. abc7 news received special permission, actually, to fly drone view 7 over the hard hit deer park area of napa county. we want to show you a look at what we saw. ♪ ♪

>> hard to see those images. today fema will be closing its aid center in santa rosa for the survivors of the august wildfires. the deadline to register for disaster assistance grants has been extended to november 21st, so after today, services must be accessed online, and you can do that at disasterassistant.gov. it's right there on the screen with the fema app as well, or by calling the fema help line at 800-621-3362. okay, a newly reopened san francisco cafe has been hit by a vandal and a thief in the course of a week. a man stole several toys from toy boat by jane on clement street in richmond. the dessert and sandwich shop was sold to gna new owner over e summer. owner amanda michael said the

thief came in thursday pretending to be a worker who was there to look at replacing a vandalized window. he got on a ladder to take measurements, boxed up some robot and godzilla toys and then took them with him while employees were helping customers. >> the neighborhood, the community, everybody's been so supportive. we've had people drop off toys to donate. it's definitely been like a pretty rotten experience, you kno ve that happen, but it's also kind of inspirational to see how people like rally behind you. >> bizarre, that they would just want to take these toys. i think that's the big question is why. michael says they would love for the thief to really just return the toys, and this story was first reported by sf eater. italian heritage festivities are happening this weekend in san francisco. a singer serenaded people in

washington square with italy's national anthem last night. this year's activities will be virtual due to the pandemic, and that includes an online celebration to replace the traditional parade through north beach tomorrow. all right, lisa, italian food sounds pretty good right now. pasta for breakfast. >> definitely could get behind that, yeah. we're going to have another day where the weather is in our favor, and that 78% containment really some good news up for the glass fire, and that relative humidity is up. but as soon as this system to the north of us passes to the north and east, our winds are going to shift out of the north, and we're going to see a big warmup, as much as ten degrees tomorrow. we have been below average. here's a live look outside. i should say from live doppler 7 where you'll notice all the cloud cover, and it is in association with this system here that we had advertised day after day hoping for some rain, but of course not going to happen here. and looking at the possibility

of showers ain extreme northwestern california, that's not to say we couldn't see a few areas of drizzle, maybe a ligh shower. otherwise a lot of cloud cover, but want to catch you up on what is happening with what now is tropical storm delta, taking you to the southeast, the gulf coast where you can see this has wound up and bringing some very heavy rain hear from all the way from alabama to mississippi up through the tennessee river valley, about 40 miles an hour winds. gusts to 60, and you can see all the cloud cover. the bright colors indicate the very heavy rain, water levels will continue to subside around louisiana, but by western tennessee, we're looking at four to six inches of rain and possible flash flooding here as you see the track of the system continue to push through the carolinas. rough weather there. back home we have temperatures in the 50s. numbers in the low 60s from oakland to hayward, 58 in fremont and san jose. a live look outside here, sprinkles or a stray shower. warmer patterns starting

tomorrow, and that brings in dry, gusty offshore winds sunday night into monday. that's not the only area where we're going to see the gusty winds. we're going to see plenty of opportunities throughout the workweek ahead. as we get into your saturday, we've got cloud cover, but into sunday it gets swept away. those north winds allowing for the clear start and that big warmup as we look at the sky cover, that spare the air alert today with the worst air quality as the wind shifts from a southerly component to a northwesterly component today. that's going to bring in haze for the north bay. this is what happens on your sunday. looks like we're getting even worse air quality. so perhaps that spare the air alert can be extended. here's a look at the rain that's going to miss us, and then slides to the east. then we get that wind shift, you can make out these arrows coming to the north. that's what's going to warm us up quickly and dry out the atmosphere. for example, 73 today in livermore, 81 tomorrow and then look what happens throughout the week. we're back into the 90s.

presidenlago events today. this comes as the white house refuses to say when the president last tested negative leaving americans asking questions about where he is in the course of the virus. good morning, everyone, we will have much more on president trump's planned speech later today. as always, if you are just joining us this half hour, let's start with a look at the weather with meteorologist. >> we're starting out with a lot of cloud cover. wish it was more than that. we're looking at a cold front to the north of us that's going to miss us, maybe bring us a few sprinkles. it is 58 in santa clara as well as san jose. good morning, novato in the 50s. a little milder with the cloud cover, up at the glass fire, 78% contained, 57 degrees with 89% relative humidity, but by tomorrow things are going to get much drier around the north bay and all across the bay area. good air quality now, but we do

expect that to change throughout the day as those winds are going to shift from the south to the northwest. poor air kwltd there aquality td the rest of the day featuring mostly cloudy skies. temperatures where they should be, 60s to mid-70s and a few peeks of sunshine, but it is going to be a cooler day today than the second half of the weekend. winds are going to shift to a northerly component that's going to bring a big warmup and set the stage for a pretty warm week ahead, which we'll detail coming up. developing news this morning, delta is now a tropical storm and continues to weaken, but it's still a major rain threat to louisiana. it made landfall near where laura hit just over a month ago. abc news reporter ellen lopez has more. >> reporter: delta slamming sino the gulf coast as a category 2 storm making landfall near creole, louisiana, only about 12 miles from where laura came ashore six weeks ago.

this storm that blasted part of the pelican state with 100 miles per hour winds, roofs that ripped off buildings, trees and power lines le chars, recover . homes covered in blue tarps from that storm now barely clinging on after delta. heavy rain pummelling areas saturated by back to back storms. we're along the vermilion river in lafayette, louisiana, where we're already seeing the banks growing here as the fast-moving storm expected to do some damage before it moves northeast before it strikes the mid-atlantic we could see up to 11 feet of storm surge along the gulf coast. >> it is very clear that southwest louisiana is going to get more of a punch from this than we would like to see. >> reporter: ellen lopez, abc news, lafayette, louisiana. today president trump plans to hold his first in-person event at the white house since being hospitalized with

covid-19. there's still a lot of confusion surrounding his illness with little word from his doctor on his condition. here's abc news senior congressional correspondent mary bruce. >> one week after he was hospitalized and with questions swirling about whether he could still be contagious, president trump is planning to resume in-person events. >> i feel better now than i did two weeks ago. it's crazy, and i recovered immediately, almost immediately. >> reporter: though the president insists he's no longer taking medication, doctors haven't answered questions about his condition and that powerful steroid he was taking that could mask symptoms of the va rus. the president back in the west wing said he would travel to florida on saturday for a rally but now planning on speaking to supporters on the balcony of the white house. >> we had a superspreader event in the white house, and it was in a situation where people were crowded together and were not wearing masks, so the data

speaks for themselves. >> at least 34 people in the white house orbit have now tested positive. trump spent two hours on the radio with rush limbaugh acknowledging last week he was not in great shape. >> i might not have recovered at all from covid. >> reporter: but now he insists he's cured thanks to the experimental antibody trump received, a treatment only given to about ten people outside of clinical trials. >> i can tell you, it's a cure, and i'm talking to you today because of it and, you know, because i think i could have been a bad -- i could have been a bad victim. >> reporter: dr. fauci pushing back saying one case does not mean the antibody treatment is a miracle. >> i think it's a reasonably good chance that the antibody that he received, the regeneron antibody made a significant difference in a positive way in his course. when you have only one, you can't make the determination that that's a cure. >> reporter: trump's doctor saying in a statement the president is devoid of any indications to suggest progression of illness adding i

fully anticipate the president's safe return to public engagementsment b engagements. but in reality we know very little about his true medical condition. his doctor hasn't taken questions since monday, and the white house is refusing to say when trump last tested negative, which would help the american people know where the president is in the course of the virus. in an interview overnight trump heard clearing his throat. >> absentee is okay because absentee ballots -- >> with limbaugh, no coughing and his opponent joe biden criticizing the president's behavior so soon after his diagnosis. >> his reckless personal conduct, the stabilizing effect that it's having on our government is unconscionable. he didn't take the necessary precautions to protect himself or others, and the longer donald trump is president the more reckless he gets. >> mary bruce, abc news, the white house. in the north bay now two teachers at jesse bethel high

school in valet hlejo are on administrative leave after they were heard complaining about their students. >> all the staff members will say, these kids are so technologically advanced. i'm like no they're [ bleep ] not, no, they're not. >> oh, you're impressed that a kid can record a tiktok? it's literally one button. >> this happened after a virtual class ended on thursday. a parent who was recording heard her son being bad mouthed. >> i was heartbroken, confused and i couldn't believe that i had heard that come out of a teacher's mouth. other students were still logged in. other parents were logged in as well commenting like do you know that you guys are being still recorded. >> the vallejo unifieied school district says quote, vcusd takes all student and parent complaints very seriously. we will evaluate our policies and procedures for online instruction and will address any specific complaints regarding the appropriate conduct of our

faculty and staff. we regret that any students were offended by this incident, and we will work carefully to resolve this matter. okay, warriors fans have a chance to show some team pride when voting this year. the team is setting up a ballot dropoff location outside the new chase center starting october 31st until election day. it will be located on the corner of 3rd street and warrior's way, and fans will also be able to drop off their ballots or vote at the training facility in the oakland convention center and at the santa cruz warriors arena. >> we're not telling folks what to vote for, who to vote for, this is really about getting out the vote and participating in the election. >> the warriors won't given any details, but they say to expect a few surprises at the ballot dropoff outside chase center. the team will also be selling voters win shirts at the warrior's shop. if you have not registered, text the warriors at 26797 to get
