game six, presented by youtube tv. let's recap the final game of this long nba season ending in the bubble. first quarter lakers defense was so good in th f half. lebron off the steal. anthony davis had 1 points. weren't sure how he would hold up because he was hobbling in game five, but he was good. look at the spin move. he let out a yell at a can't produce. lakers led by 28. and then lebron, out of my way.
8:38 pm
28-14-10, the most in nba finals history. j.r. smith shirt off already. didn't play much of the series, but who cares? 106-93. lakers win in six. it is their first nba title since 2010. that was the kobe, pal gasol luke walton lakers. let's hear from lebron. >> personally thinking i had something to prove fueled me the last year and a half since my injury. it fueled me because no matter what i have done in my career up to this point there is still little rumblings of doubt or comparing me to the history of the game and has he done this, has he done that. so, you know, having that in my head, having that in my mind saying to myself, why not still
8:39 pm
have something to prove, i think it fuels me. >> lebron, all the circumstances surrounding this one being in orlando, having a four and a half month hiatus away from family, everything on in the country, how does that add context to this fourth ring versus the other three? >> i think they're all special in their own right. they all have their obstacles both on and off the floor. but one is not less than the other. because when you're able to put yourself in this position to be able to win a championship, the first thing you start to think about is how much work you have put in over the course of the
8:40 pm
year. how much you have sacrificed, how much you have dedicated to the game and to your craft. that's always been the most fulfilling thing for me besides seeing my teammates as happy as they are, is being able to know that you can put the work in, literally trust the process, live about the process and then see the results. and i think not only from a basketball player but from everybody, whatever craft, whatever work space you in, to be able to put the work in and live along the process and build along the process and then be able to see results, i think we all live f that moment. >> that cigar moment was classic. that's pretty much you seven days a week at home. he can relate to that. not all of us have the wine cellar and all that stuff going, coach. you and i had this conversation before because if you are of a
8:41 pm
certain age and certain generation, lebron is by far and away the best player you have ever seen. those of us who are a little wiser, shall we say, or older, you know, believe that jordan's six for six in the finals will never be eclipsed and he's the greatest. but where do you think this title puts lebron in terms of that conversation? >> well, the mvp certainly now his third different franchise. i think it does elevate it maybe just a little bit in our eyes, larry. i don't know if it will be enough to overcome the wiser or older crowd, if you will, especially in this day and age with everything being so readily available to him. i think history will be kind to him as it was to some former players. but clearly have to take appreciation for what has actually happened right now, what he's done. to be able to bounce like that is not easy to do. a lot of his moves are
8:42 pm
calculated. but as you heard him say, he clearly still carries a chip on his shoulder and doesn't think his work is done. i don't think he personally is ready to put himself in that position. although his surroundings and peers may want to. the current state of affairs and the current generation, i think this is also what fuels him to be able to have longevity because i think at the end of the day, larry, those six titles will always be six titles. i think he will do whatever he can to get to six. there is no other argument because there are no accomplishments behind that. so it is pretty close. and if it's a a a a a a koe-get. nice to have an argument or conversation around a nice cocktail for those of us as we get older. >> or just the cocktail. you don't need an excuse. you don't need an excuse. >> a lot of these in 2020,
8:43 pm
absolutely. >> yeah. anything goes. and i know there is people, you know, older than myself thinking out there, you should have seen cuzi back in the day. but you bring up a great point in now the lakers have this dynamic duo with anthony davis and early in lebron's career, the knock on him is, oh, people don't want to play with him. it's difficult. and kyrie left, oh, this and that. obviously at some point lebron is going to pass the baton td.u everybody else in the west, this is a problem. >> well, it's a big problem when you have two of the five best players on one team and clearly a management that's committed to do whatever they can to surround those guys with some nice fit pieces, let's not forget they had to find some guys that were able to fit under a salary cap, to fit in there.
8:44 pm
i thought rob pelinka got robbed of the general manager of the year award. you've got to find those guys. i thought he did a great job of doing that. clearly talked about what rondo brought to the table. you mentioned about passing to a.d. one thing he will have to do a better job of to take this torch is learn firsthand from lebron what he does do to invest in his body because it is an event every time a.d. goes down with a tweak here or there. clearly he has some fragility to attend to to have a chance to carry this one. but he's in good hands and in the right place and in good hands with lebron to start out. >> this is what the lakers had in mind all along. i want to get your thoughts on a man that gets no credit at all, that is frank vogel, the coach of the lakers. when he was first hired and they put him on the staff, the notion
8:45 pm
was that, well, he will be fired in the middle of the season or whenever that happens if it goes badly. well, one for one in championships. and this is a guy supposedly wasn't good enough with the magic, wasn't good enough with the pacers, was good enough to win a title with lebron and a.d. >> that's the idea about sports. it's really about match making and you have to find a place that appreciates you, can allow you to go and really not to seed anything to circumstances. it would be easy to say, look, we're going to go into next year and look for opportunities for the team to earn a championship. he took what was in front of him and he made the best of it and put his players in a position to be successful. >> coach to coach, what did you think of vogel and the adjustments he made. because they went small tonight. they sat dwight howard who played some good minutes in the playoffs in particular in this series.
8:46 pm
>> coaching lebron can overshadow some of those tweaks and moves clearly. and it is easy for the armchair coaches which we're not. we're professional coaches as we like to say in the studio. not paid as well and don't have the pressure. but i thought frank did a great job. just don't screw it up. that's the easy thing to say. but there were some things he had to do, decisions he had to make. i don't think he did them alone. i think he was humble enough to embrace lebron. and clearly his experience in the finals, too. let's not take into too much account this was frank's first shot at it but not lebron's. i think he's smart enough to understand he'll embrace lebron's input and was able to raise seemingly tough decisions of lesser ability. i think frank put himself in a good position to keep with this team because as you said he was out the door the day that he got the job. everyone was already writing his ticket out.
8:47 pm
so i think for everyone that's dealt with that and then put the pressure of being in the bubble on top of that, i think frank did a tremendous job. >> agreed. all right. more to come on toyota "after the game." last chance this season, in fact, to get your questions in for adonal. use the #atg. the final time, the final questions when we come back.

8:51 pm
for the final time this season, ask adonal. your questions for the big man. let's start it out now with a dynasty question here. is this a lakers dynasty or can the warriors own the west next season? >> oh, man. that's a really hard question. but i think the most important thing is that the warriors have had a proven record at being exceptional. so you want to see those guys come back being at their best. but the rule is whoever is at the top, it is your top to tumble them, right? so the warriors have to take the lakers out. the warriors are not going to give the lakers anything. any day of the week, steph and klay, i want them on my team. now it is their time to go out and reassert themselves at the top of the west. >> one thing the lakers didn't have to do a lot of is match
8:52 pm
another team shooting threes for threes. so if the warriors can do that and get some bigs, that can help. you know, who knows? more clutch with the game on the line, curry or -- jimmy butler was out of gas tonight. >> oh, yeah. curry all the way. steph has proven this over and over again. i think jimmy has nothing, you know, to hang his head about. he played an exceptional game. he needs help like he did in the last game single handedly bringing his team to game six. that can't be understated. at the same time, i think steph has been really remarkable throughout his career. >> no question about that. all right. we're going to take one more break and then wrap things up with coach and adonal as the lakers win their 17th title. they're tied with the boston sell chicks, their arch rivals for most nba championships. we're coming right back with final thoughts. a look ahead to next season when we come back.
