unsecured and made from cardboard. republican officials insist the boxes are part of the party's ballot harvest program. judge amy coney barrett is expected to face a grilling today on capitol hill. day two of her supreme court confirmation hearing promises to be far more contentious. meanwhile, joe biden has given his clearest answer yet on whether he'd support adding more justices to the court. abc's elizabeth schulze has the latest for us. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, moneyna. well, for the first time since being nominated, judge amy coney barrett will be grilled by senators today. two topics expected to dominate the hearing, abortion and health care. this morning, confirmation hearings for amy coney barrett enter a new phase. beginning today 12 republicans and 10 democrats will grill the supreme court nominee including vice presidential candidate kamala harris, who sits on the senate judiciary committee. >> by replacing justice ruth bader ginsburg with someone who will undo her legacy, president

trump is attempting to roll back americans' rights for decade to come. >> reporter: barrett will face tough questions on both health care and abortion. barrett criticized the 2012 supreme court ruling that upheld obamacare. she also signed a petition objecting to a requirement that employers provide access to birth control and insurance plans. democrats say health care for tens of millions of americans is at stake with the court set to hear arguments on obamacare next month. >> stripping health care from millions of americans during a pandemic, that's really what is at stake. >> reporter: republicans are praising barrett's qualifications arguing her faith should be off limits. >> what your political opponents want to paint you as is a tv or cartoon version of a religious radical. >> reporter: barrett will likely face questions on two anti-abortion newspaper ads she signed as a law professor. one of those ads called roe v. wade infamous and called for the unborn to be protected in law. during her opening statement,

barrett said her philosophy has been shaped by her mentor, the late justice antonin scalia. >> a judge must apply the law as it is written, not as she wishes it were. >> reporter: meanwhile, joe biden is giving his clearest answer yet on whether he supports adding more justices to the court or so-called packing the court. he and senator harris have been dodging questions about the issue for days. >> i'm not a fan of court packing, but i'm not -- i don't want to get off on that whole issue. i want to keep focused. >> reporter: biden saying he's not a fan of packing the court but he wouldn't rule out supporting the idea. as for today's hearing, it will start at 9:00 a.m. eastern. abc news will bring you live coverage. mona. >> elizabeth, thank you. five of the six men accused in a plot to kidnap the governor of michigan are due in court today. seven others are facing state charges in the case. prosecutors say the plot included plans to overthrow state government. a pro-trump rally at a gun store where one suspect used to work has now been canceled.

this was error, human error, and i'm paying the price for it. >> the crane company says the ground near a septic tank gave way causing the collapse. a hiker who survived a terrifying ordeal is speaking out. a cougar began stalking man, even lunging at him, and it was all caught on camera by the hiker. abc's megan tevrizian shows us more. >> reporter: this morning, a terrifying encounter. >> oh, [ bleep ]. oh, [ bleep ]. >> reporter: kyle burgess was hiking near provo, utah, when he spotted cougar cubs. >> they were cougars and momma was near. >> reporter: then seconds later the cubs' mother pounces. >> no. go away. go away. please go away. >> reporter: that cougar immediately started stalking burgess who captured the entire six-minute confrontation on his phone. >> come on, dude. i don't feel like dying today. >> reporter: the cougar at times lunging at him. >> go away.

vaccine. first johnson & johnson just announced it's pausing its vaccine trial because of an unexpected illness. how concerning is it? >> i think it's par for the course. when you have 40,000, 50,000, 60,000 in a vaccine trial, there may be pauses. this isn't necessarily saying the direct action is related to the vaccine. it could be a coincidence. that's why these checks and balances are in place, to make sure the trial is taking a look at everything to make sure the vaccine is safe but here's the thing, i think the bigger picture is that this is proof that we're probably not going to have a vaccine ready by november 3rd. this process takes a lot of time. >> and the other vaccine headline this morning is from pfizer, which is now signing up volunteers as young as 12 years old. what's the significance of that? >> i think it's a good sign because, you know, if you think about who a vaccine is going to be distributed to, it's a wide array of the population. some people say, hey, adults are high-risk individuals. should be in the trial first and then we should see the safety data before giving it to children that might be fine.

children still need to get represented in that trial to make sure they're safe as well. you can't just wait until a vaccine is approved and then give it out to children. >> dr. patel, we're learning more about the first confirmed case in the u.s. of someone being reinfected with the coronavirus. with these new details, what do we need to know? >> the important thing about this specific study that showed the reinfection is that reinfection can happen. just because you get infected once does not mean you're immune. this specific individual tested positive in april then tested negative twice and then tested positive again in june with a genetically different virus, so it wasn't that he got infected and then the virus deactivated and then reactivated. it was two separate viruses. so the take home is that anyone who had it is not immune and still need to follow the same precaution. >> our thanks to dr. patel. now, here's a first for the baseball season, a game with fans in the stands. game one of the national league championship series had nearly 11,000 fans to see the braves
