i'm dion lim. some well-known conservative personalities were on the agenda to speak at that rally today, but organizers canceled the event minutes after it started. police say several people participating in the rally were injured as well as three officers when they were sprayed with pepper spray. a warning now, some may find the following video disturbing. a witness captured the scene as a protester punched rally organizer philip anderson before his speech. cornell bernard has a look at how things quickly escalated. >> no nazis, no kkk, no fascist usa. >> reporter: a large crowd of demonstrators gathered to oppose a small group holding what was build as a free speech rally, protesting what they say is twitter censorship of some of their message. >> they have no business being here. >> we call them san francisco for jesus christ.

>> reporter: the rally was granted a permanent from the city. some of the speakers expected including well-known president trump supporters and conservative right personalities, but most never got the chance to be heard. tensions quickly escalated. counter demonstrators taunted police. sky 7 was overhead as some kicked barricades. police wearing riot gear tried to protect the speakers from the crowd, but many threw bottles at the stage and shouted down the speakers. before the event, the main organizer philip anderson said he was attacked and punched, knocking his front teeth out. >> you knock a black man's teeth out. you knocked my teeth out. >> reporter: minutes later, anderson announced the rally was over. >> canceled. it's too bad. but this is what happens when you louis fres lose free speech. >> some counter demonstrators felt victorious. >> i think the fact that they were outnumbered is important. >> it's tough, right, because i

absolutely believe in free speech. but i'm also anti-fascism. >> reporter: rally organizers were escorted away by police. >> police released a statement tonight about the incident say, quote, demonstrators began throwing glass bottles, plastic bottles filled with unknown liquid, metal cans and eggs at free speech rally participants. the rally became so violent in nature it was declared a public safety measure and shut down. and at 11:00 tonight, dan noyes talked to philip anderson, now recovering at home where he is staying. >> why did you come here? >> whole point, we don't have the right to peacefully protest, obviously. okay? we don't have the right to free speech. and that's a fact. you don't have a first amendment right. you don't have the right to peacefully protest, and that means we're no longer americans. one of my teeth was knocked out and the other one was dangling

marching in solidarity. to the south bay now, where two people are dead and four others wounded after a shooting in san jose. abc7 news was outside the nueva vallarta restaurant where police were still at the scene this morning more than nine hours after the crime was reported. officers were first called out just before midnight. there is no word on a motive or any arrests. and in san francisco, police are urging witnesses to come forward after two men were killed in two different shootings. you are looking at the scene in visitacion valley when four people were shot at about 8:30 last night where one man died. in a second shooting, a man was killed on hunters point boulevard at around 8:00 last night. new developments now. a federal judge will decide if the undocumented man who shot and killed kate steinle along the san francisco waterfront in 2015 is competent to now stand trial on other charges. jose inez garcia zarate being

acquitted by a san francisco jury on state charges in 2017. his defense attorneys claimed he fired the gun accidentally, but zarate still faces gun charges in federal court. a judge refused to let zarate plead guilty to those charges yesterday. according to the san francisco examiner, zarate says he wants to plead guilty and be sentenced to prison or be deported. two doctors have diagnosed zarate with schizophrenia and declared him unfit to stand trial. we're learning more tonight about memorial services for san francisco firefighter paramedic killed in the line of duty during a training accident. jason cortez died on october 7th, and he leaves behind his wife and their two sons along with his father, mother, and stepmoth stepmother. a private vigil will take place monday afternoon at st. ignatius francisco campus. on tuesday morning, a private celebration of life will begin at 11:00 inside oracle park. well, san francisco's ocean beach was pretty packed today as

you can see. all those people trying to beat the heat. here with a look at just how long this hot temperature trend will last is abc7 news meteorologist frances. >> the answer is not long. san francisco had a record high today of 93 degrees. look at all the 90s along the peninsula. san jose 95 degrees, as well as 95 in richmond. so the areas in yellow are the cities that beat or tied a record. and we even had triple-digit heat in ukiah and cloverdle. but notice the cooling at the beach. half moon bay, 77. and that's because the sea breeze is starting to kick in. in fact, here is a look at the next seven days in san francisco. the 90s are completely gone. our average high of 69 will still be above average. but the cooling trend continues well into monday before things peak again midweek. and then i'll let you know what you can expect for your neighborhood. but definitely things are cooling down starting tomorrow. dion? >> sounds good, frances, thanks.

the expiration date for san francisco's businesses shared spaces program is coming up. the program has been a big way for restaurants to expand outdoor dining. the financial impact on the economy is something we are focused on as we build a better bay area. now many business owners are asking for the program to become permanent, not just something for the pandemic. abc7 news reporter luz pena tells us what the city is planning. ♪ >> you know, we had to have covid happen to make an experience like this in the city. so it's wonderful. it's awesome. >> yeah, we've been saying to each other it feels like we're in europe. >> reporter: david and catherine are talking about the shared spaces platforms. that's the technical term for this dine-in cubicles on parking spaces. come december 31st, that will have to disappear. over 2,000 business also be impacted once the city program ends. >> hanging on until the end of the year, that's what i've been hearing. if we just make to it 2021.

>> reporter: cat anderson and her business partner invested over $5,000 to build outdoor dining. this is what they say is keeping their doors open during this pandemic, even though now they can technically open for indoor dining with 25% capacity. >> we need a little bit more uptick in the business the pay for that, because we still have to pay for staff and all of our food. it's definitely investments. >> reporter: the precedent of the san francisco small business commission says 80% of business owners want to make this outdoor option permanent, even after december 31st. >> there is also commercial borders in neighborhood that don't have that kind of foot traffic. so i'd like to give them an incentive to help create community thisser in neighborhoods. and to do that, i think we need a longer program. >> reporter: san francisco supervisor rafael mandolin says he will propose a two-year extension to this program, but it won't be easy. >> certainly there are safety issues. there are financial issues for the city that they're displacing

mountain lion roaming around their backyard. not once, more than once. tonight san mateo police are telling residents to use caution because of another confirmed sighting just a few blocks away just in the past hour. the cat was spotted on alameda de la pulgas at about 10:20. lauren martinez spoke to neighbors in the area who aren't surprised. >> reporter: a home surveillance camera captured a mountain lion roaming around a backyard in san mateo. video released by police shows the mountain lion on a deck area around friday at 10:00 p.m., and then again saturday morning at 6:45. officers alerted some neighbors by going door to door off alameda de las pulgas. >> this is the creek area. >> reporter: sue galloway lives next door to the homeowners who captured the video. she says the streak in their backyards attract deer and other wildlife. when she heard about the mountain lion, she wasn't surprised. >> no. but i was surprised when i saw how big he was. >> reporter: galloway says

neighbors who lived at that same home a year and a half ago captured video of a mountain lion. >> so he is out there. and like i said, he was a big cat. >> reporter: we spoke to another neighbor who said he went jogging here at sugarloaf park and was turned around because of a mountain lion sighting here. >> i was literally stopped by a park ranger. don't go in there. there has been a mountain lion sighting. go the other way. >> that incident happened two weeks ago. we showed him the surveillance video. >> thisst last night at 10:00 and this morning around 6:00. >> wow. >> reporter: police said they searched the area and didn't locate the mountain lion. they issued the alert so residents can take precautions. >> we have a dog. we have a young kid. it's frightening to have a huge mountain lions running around your yard. >> reporter: in san mateo, lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> what a surprise. well, the lemur apparently stolen from the san francisco zoo is still under quarantine today. police say maki was stolen from the litman family lemur forest wednesday and discovered thursday night at hope lutheran

day school in daly city that same day san rafael police arrested 30-year-old cory mcgillway on suspicion of shoplifting and stealing a getaway truck. they later found photos of maki on his cell phone and one of the officers who tried to take his kids to the zoo before made the connection. >> then the lemur jumped over the gate, and he just come inside. he was there. >> and then they called police animal control. >> oh, they are so adorable. hope lutheran has received the $2100 reward and the trent family has received a lifetime pass to the zoo. meantime, mick giloway has been booked on four felony charges including burglary, grand theft of an animal, looting during an emergency and vandalism. abc7 news stopped by the san francisco zoo today to see how people felt about the theft. >> i don't like it. because it's not nice to take

days. >> definitely, dion. a cooling trend on the way. it started a little bit today along the beaches. and here is a look at live doppler 7. we've got mainly clear skies all around the bay area. we could see some patchy fog develop. the marine layer really weak. and it might start to strengthen over the next couple of days as we see an onshore flow increase. check out this really pretty live shot as we look towards san francisco, city hall lit up in green. and you see the heart sf in the background as well. temperatures are still in the 70s. san francisco 73. oakland 71. even san jose 71. but half moon bay has been one of the coolest spots today at 59 degrees. beautiful shot of the golden gate bridge. just clear on through. you can see right through. santa rosa 61. novato, 63. and we're still at 70 degrees in concord. and this time from mount tam, we're looking south towards san francisco. you can see all the way across the bay. so cooler for all areas tomorrow

and into monday. but then it will be warming up again tuesday and wednesday. and we'll keep an eye on possible red flag warning for the north bay hills as well as the east bay hills as this offshore flow returns. and then you might want to head to the beach tomorrow, because next weekend, temperatures will be closer to average, and it will start to feel like fall. another live shot from the east bay looking west this time towards san francisco and the bay bridge. so there is an air quality advisory for tomorrow. the north bay inland east bay and santa clara valley may still have moderate air quality. but things improve a little bit more on monday. so we'll keep you posted on that. lows tonight near 60 degrees. around the bay and 55 in half moon bay. so we could see some of that fog develop overnight into tomorrow. but the marine layer has almost been nonexistent. and if it does develop, it will be very shallow. highs tomorrow. notice even though they're still well above average, they're noticeably cooler compared to

today's numbers. for example, in san francisco, tomorrow your high will be 75. so we've had three days of 90 degree or above 90-degree temperatures in san francisco. and san jose 89 degrees. oakland, 81. and in the inland areas, we'll see the low 90s. so if you do head to the beach, you will notice it's a bit cool were that sea breeze as well. over the next cengiz day, you can expect temperatures to drop tomorrow and into monday on the peninsula. our average high still above that. but notice tuesday and wednesday is when it picks up. and then things drop down considerably into next weekend where we might even be below average. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast that r. we have that onshore breeze. inland areas in the low 90s instead of the upper 90s. around the bay, mid-80s and at the coast near 70 degrees. so cooler for everybody noticeably as well by monday. and then we warm up again with plenty of sunshine tuesday and wednesday before another cooling trend heads our way.

organizers say hey hope to bring a final show of force before the november 3rd election. covid-19 cases are surging in rural communities across the midwest, and hospitals say they are struggling to keep up with the rise in patients. the united states topped 8 million cases that is according to johns hopkins worldwide tracker that is the most of any country. california's department of public health reports more than 864,000 cases with nearly 3,000 new cases confirmed yesterday. and university of alabama head football coach nick saban is coaching. the school said he tested negative three times. the 68-year-old saban said he had no symptoms of covid before he tested positive for the virus on wednesday. to the east bay, where a national park service is celebrating the purchase of land crucial to saving wildlife and the opening of an historic area to the public. west hills farm in martinez was recently bought by the john muir land trust thanks to a massive donation campaign.
