with the latest from the front lines and more hospitals saying they're overwhelmed. this morning, scientists warning that the u.s. is bracing for a dangerous winter. >> the next 6 to 12 weeks are going to be the darkest of the entire pandemic. >> with hospitalizations climbing in 41 states and deaths rising in 14, experts say the country could be barreling toward a so-called twindemic. >> we don't want a lot of flu and covid happening at the same time. >> reporter: the time line still unclear. pfizer revealing sunday it's already churning out hundreds of thousands of doses of its experimental vaccine. the company saying it won't know if the shot even works until the end of this month and then scientists must monitor volunteers for another two weeks for safety precautions. >> this pandemic is not going to go away until we have a vaccine. >> it comes as states report record-shattering increases in new cases. minnesota confirming more than 1,700 infections sunday. the 11th consecutive day that state has seen more than a thousand new cases. and in texas the state now deploying doctors, respiratory

nurses and backup personnel as cases surge in some areas. hundreds of patients lining up for hours in hopes of getting tested in hard hit cities like el paso where the death toll is climbing. >> the deaths are going to increase. >> reporter: cities in the east fighting off superspreader events. new york city halting a wedding with a 10,000 person guest list. the city fining the church $10,000 for the open inverytation to the rabbi's grandson's ceremony and after the white house itself hosted an event that led to more than a dozen illnesses. >> were us surprised that president trump got sick? >> absolutely not. when i saw that on tv, i said, oh, my goodness. nothing good can come out of that. that's got to be a problem. and then sure enough it turned out to be a superspreader event. >> reporter: he revealed the administration has prevented him from talking to certain journalists. >> i certainly have not been

allowed to go on many, many, many shows that have asked for me. >> reporter: meanwhile, florida reported 2,500 more covid cases sunday but after a court ruling miami beach is no longer enforcing a curfew for nightclubs. house speaker nancy pelosi has set a deadline tomorrow for reaching a coronavirus stimulus deal with the white house. pelosi set the 48-hour deadline after speaking with treasury secretary steven mnuchin for more than an hour. they have agreed to speak again today. >> 48 only relates to if we want to get it done before the election, which we do. >> well, don't you? >> which we do. but we're saying to them, we have to freeze the design on some of these things. are we going with it or not and what is the language? i'm optimistic. >> senate majority leader mitch mcconnell has scheduled votes on stand-alone relief measures tomorrow and wednesday. now to the race for the white house. joe biden is picking up some high-profile help this week as former president barack obama hits the campaign trail.

meanwhile, president trump rallied his supporters in nevada last night, a state he's hoping to turn blue. abc's faith abubey has more on the week ahead. good morning, faith. >> reporter: hey, good morning, mona. with just 15 days until election day, president trump and joe biden are hitting crucial states, and it comes as early voting gets under way in one critical battleground today. with the presidential campaign entering the home stretch, both candidates spent sunday in states they hope to flip. >> it's go time. it's the most important election in our lifetimes. >> this is the most important lifetime in the history of our country. >> reporter: last night president trump in nevada, a state he lost in 2016 mocking joe biden for promising to follow the science if elected. >> he'll listen to the scientists. if i listened totally to the scientists, we would right now have a country that would be in a massive depression instead of we're like a rocket ship. >> reporter: earlier trump at a church service in las vegas putting cash in the collection

box. the indoor service packed, most people not wearing a mask. joe biden sunday campaigning in north carolina, a state hillary clinton lost in 2016. >> the other night trump said at one of his rallies, we've turned the corner. my grandfather would say, this guy's gone around the bend if he thinks we've turned the corner. >> reporter: this morning new polls show tight races in wisconsin and arizona but biden leading in both. as our national polls show, biden up 12 points, the same lead hillary clinton had at this time four years ago. the biden team not taking anything for granted writing in a memo, if we learned anything from 2016, it's that we cannot underestimate donald trump's ability to claw his way back. senator john cornyn is the latest republican to break from the president. cornyn who is up for re-election telling a texas newspaper that he disagrees with trump on a

number of issues including the border wall. the republican national committee chairwoman with this warning. >> any republican that doesn't recognize that running with the president is going to help them is hurting themselves in the long run. >> reporter: at least 27 million americans have now voted early and today in-person voting begins in the key battleground state of florida. in boston over the weekend lines wrapped around fenway park. now being used as a polling place. >> i would have voted here if i had known that that was the case because i would much rather do that. >> reporter: meanwhile, after that chaotic first debate between president trump and joe biden, the debate commission says the final debate which is set for this thursday will be in the same format. no further rule changes have been announced. >> mona. >> faith, thank you. today a california woman is spending her first full day with her family after she was missing for nearly two weeks. holly courtier was missing at zion national park. she had taken a shuttle bus to the park on october 6th with plans to go on a hike but never came back and didn't have her phone.

rescue teams found her after 12 days with no food and little water. courtier's sister spoke with her in the hospital. >> at the moment i talked to her on the phone, she said, i love you so much and that was her signature thing to say to people she loved. she always said, i love you so much and we'd always say i love you so much too, and i said, i'm so glad you're coming home. >> courtier's daughters say their mother lost her job and the avid hiker always wanted to see more national parks. officials did not elaborate on her condition or where she was found. in colorado a raging wildfire has forced about 3,000 people near boulder to flee their homes. the fire has burned nearly 9,000 acres and has destroyed 26 homes so far. it's only 15% contained. meanwhile, a smokenado was seen here over colorado's largest wildfire which has burned nearly 320 square miles. time now for a look at your monday morning weather. blustery conditions from

back now with the wreck of the "titanic." it's the focus of a legal dispute. a salvages compa wants to retrieve the hip's radio equipment but the government is trying to block the expedition claiming it could disturb human remains in the wreck. the company says it should be allowed to proceed because no remains have been found since the ship was discovered. retailers are bracing for a holiday shipping crisis this year. this morning's "wall street journal" reports that fedex, u.p.s. and smaller carriers are already turning customers away. they're stretched thin because the pandemic has forced consumers to do even more shopping online which led to longer delivery times. we turn now to the rapper arrested after bragging about getting unemployment benefits, now charged with scamming the system after applying for more than a million dollars in aid. here's abc's megan tevrizian. >> reporter: this morning a rapper who bragged about getting rich from defrauding the government has been arrested

accused of doing exactly that. ♪ >> reporter: fontrell antonio baines, who goes by the stage name nuke bizzle is accused of applying for more than $1.2 million in jobless claims intended for those impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. ♪ >> reporter: in a youtube video titled "edd" posted on september 11th baines is holding stacks of envelopes from the unemployment development department. ♪ i think i got rich on my edd >> reporter: bragging about getting rich. another rapper boasting about going to the bank with a stack of these, those envelopes presumably debit cards for those filing for unemployment. ♪ you got the name and number >> reporter: baines' music video painting a remarkably similar picture to what federal prosecutors argue happened. he used stolen identities to

better equipped to deal with it? >> yes, mona. the difference between now and this summer, we're currently entering into the flu season. just for context right now we're battling approximately 60,000 new cases per day and in the summer averaging at its peak around 75,000 cases per day in mid-july so our goal is to prevent going in that direction and to prevent hospitals from reaching capacity of battling the simultaneous virus of the flu and covid-19. >> dr. scott atlas from the white house coronavirus task force tweeted a message, which has been removed by twitter saying masks don't prevent covid and in the quite he quotes the world health organization as saying, quote, widespread mask use not supported and many harms. what is your reaction to what dr. atlas is trying to say and what's behind this messaging? >> so that statement is false and frustrating and it's concerning that that opinion is guiding the president of the united states. we've seen in numerous studies the benefit of wearing a mask and reducing risk of transmission and exposure of covid-19. so it's quite simple. wearing a mask can reduce the

risk of transmission and exposure of covid-19 and ultimately infection and save, if we all participate, save thousands of lives. >> new york governor andrew cuomo unveiled a vaccine distribution plan and says it would begin with health care workers and nursing home residents followed by first responders and teachers, people over 65 and then healthy adults and children. what are your thoughts on that time line, and do you think this will be the plan across the country? >> although we have yet to see specific data on safety or efficacy on a vaccine, i think it's quite wise to start planning for production and distribution of a covid-19 vaccine. if you look at the plans of governor cuomo, they're in line with that of the w.h.o. guidance which is a framework that focuses on the fair and equitable distribution of a covid-19 vaccine. >> our thanks to dr. sutton. in sports for the third time in four years, the l.a. dodgers are in the world series. they overcame a 3-1 deficit to beat the braves 4-3 last night. they beat tampa bay for game one of the world series.
