morning. we want to start the day off right with meteorologist mike nicco with a look at that forecast. finally a couple days of cooling down before another warmup? >> yeah. i think we'll have some temperatures that will be cooler than what we dealt with last week and over the weekend. just a touch above average before we can start to get more fall-like weather. fortunately the fire threat returned but mainly to the north bay mountains. this is a very big area, but thankfully not the greatest of population centers as it affects about 12,000 to 13,000 people. i'm not minimizing you, believe me, but it was much more broad i guess is my point last week when it covered more area. so fire weather watch at 11:00 this evening through 8:00 wednesday. at some point this morning the weather service usually updates around 9:30 or 10:00, it will probably be boosted to a red flag warning. here's a look at our winds up there, up to 17 miles per hour. pretty quiet as are all of our

neighborhoods this morning. clouds along the coast. 60s there. 70s around the bay and 80s inland today. >> thank you. happening today, family and friends will hold a vigil for the san francisco firefighter who died earlier this month. jason cortez passed away after a training accident. the 13-year veteran firefighter and paramedic is survived by his wife and two young kids. his loved ones will hold a private vigil at 4:00 this afternoon at st. ignatius church. a private memorial will be hold tomorrow at oracle park. today governor newsom will provide another update to the response to the wildfires and covid-19. last week the governor talked to president trump to approve the state's disaster declaration for assistance. you can watch that update on abc7news.com. time is running out on congress to agree on a new coronavirus relief package. nancy pelosi says if a deal is not reached by tomorrow it won't

happen before the election. the deadline comes as the u.s. is seeing a surge in covid-19 cases. hospitals in several states are short on icu beds. >> reporter: this morning, scientists warning that the u.s. is bracing for a dangerous winter. >> the next 6 to 12 weeks will be the darkest of the entire pandemic. >> reporter: with hospitalizations climbing in 41 states and deaths rising in 14, experts say the country could be barrelling towards a so-called twindemic. >> we don't want a lot of flu and covid happening at the same time. >> reporter: with the time line still unclear, pfizer revealing sunday it's already churning out hundreds of thousands of doses of its experimental vaccine. the company saying it won't know if the shot even works until the end of this month and then scientists must monitor volunteers for another two weeks for safety precautions. >> this pandemic is not going to go away until we have a vaccine. >> reporter: it comes as states report record-shattering increases in new cases.

minnesota confirming more than 1,700 infections sunday. in sexes, the state now deploying doctors, respiratory nurses and backup personnel as cases surge in some areas. hundreds of patients lining up for hours in hopes of getting tested in hard hit cities like el paso. >> the deaths are going to increase. >> reporter: cities in the east fighting off superspreader events. new york city officials haultding a halting a wedding with a 10,000 person guest list. the city fining the church $10,000 for the open invitation to the rabbi's grandson's ceremony and after the white house itself hosted an event that led to more than a dozen illnesses. >> were you surprised that president trump got sick? >> absolutely not. when i saw that on tv, i said, oh, my goodness. nothing good can come out of that. that's got to be a problem. and then sure enough it turned out to be a superspreader event.

san mateo county is launching a new covid-19 compliance unit today. this is a push to make sure business are following coronavirus guidelines and keeping employees and customers safe. health is something we are committed to in our effort to building a better bay area especially during the pandemic. amy hollyfield is live in san mateo county with more on this. >> reporter: not wearing your mask, not staying six feet apart while out and about, maybe shopping in san mateo county could cost you. this team could fine you or your business $3,000. this is the new covid-19 compliance team here in san mateo county. that team will be on the lookout starting today for people and businesses that are not following county health department rules. one business owner tells us he supports the idea. >> we have to. if not, we're going to get shut down again, then we'll be right

where we started in the early months of this covid thing. nobody wants that. >> if you have seen a business that is not enforcing the rules or a person who is in violation, you can call 211 now to report them here in san mateo county. the compliance unit will work with businesses to make sure they understand what is required of them. they will hand out warnings at first but that could graduate to fines and even all the way to criminal prosecution. reporting live in daly city, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. today is the last day to register to vote online or by mail here in california. election day is just 15 days away. statewide nearly 3 million ballots have been turned in. throughout the bay area we're seeing a higher early voter count compared to 2016. >> we have about a 23% turnout in san francisco, which is good for this point in time. >> we received over 70,000

matters into his own hands to protect chinatown. he was caught on camera flashing his gun. this was outside of golden gate fortune cookie factory. this is video you will only see on abc7. >> the guy just pushed like this real quick. he did the first push. >> this brazen daytime assault happened saturday afternoon outside chinatown's iconic fortune cookie factory. the man in the black sweatshirt singles out one of a dozen tourists and attacks. we blurred his face because he's not been arrested. >> he said why are you pushing me? because you're staring at me. >> reporter: what makes this story remarkable is what unfolds next. the co-owner of the factory seen in the gray sweatshirt with green sleeves immediately steps in and lifts up his shirt to reveal -- >> i need to protect my business. >> reporter: just the sight of

my guests. now one of the top stories on abc7news.com, a san francisco man is back with his two puppies this morning. this is doug with indigo and lila after they were reunited yesterday. he reported the dogs missing on saturday. he told police he left them in his backyard for about five hours. when he got home, these adorable dogs were gone. two families ended up buying the dogs from a man on the street. they eventually came forward after learning the puppies were sto stolen. >> through the miracles of people doing the right thing, getting the word out, my friends, my community are so amazing. off to the vet to check them, but they're here. >> police arreste 39-year-old francisco zaragoza. he's been booked on charges of receiving stolen property, drug possession and giving police a fake i.d. people in san mateo are on edge after three mountain lion

sightings over the weekend, and now police are warning you to be careful. a home surveillance camera caught this mountain lion walking through somebody's backyard. this was in alameda on saturday night. ths comes after two other sightings, one on friday night and the other on saturday morning. police officers conducted a thorough search of the area but didn' find the animal. a black bear put on a rare performance at yosemite national park. you will want to listen to the vocals as he was spotted hanging out in a tree. that is definitely me when that alarm clock goes off early in the morning. the park tweeted bears can make all kinds noises typically when they're afraid, distressed or aggressive. they say it does not appear anything was wrong with the bear. they say they see the bear all the time and he appears to be healthy. >> i feel like he was trying to

another fire threat up in the north bay. the reason being is notice those clouds over vancouver, portland heading down towards denver. that's another cold front. behind that cold front high pressure always settles into the great basbasin. as long as we continue to have the cold fronts coming through, high pressure will be behind them and that will keep setting us up for offshore wind events. that's the way it will be. a complete flip-flop from what the medium range models were saying last week. along the coast you can see plenty of blue there developing. by the evening hours, the clouds are marching back. expect more cloud cover tomorrow morning. 79 in milpitas. 81 at san jose. morgan hill, 88. 79 in millbrae. 88 in palo alto. 64 to 68 along the peninsula coast. low 70s in downtown, south san francisco and sausalito. 80 to 85 through the north bay valleys. 74 to 79 along the east bay

anything says the final debate set for this thursday will be in the same format, no further rule changes have been announced. abc news, washington. nancy pelosi is giving the trump administration until tomorrow to get a coronavirus stimulus bill done before the election. pelosi says she is working with treasury secretary steve mnuchin to reconcile the remaining disputes in the bill. the two will meet again today and pelosi says she is optimistic. >> bottom line, are americans going to get relief before election day? >> that depends on the administration. the fact is that we cannot -- the heart of the matter is to stop the spread of the virus. >> i want to do it at a bigger number than she wants. that doesn't mean all the republicans agree with me, but i think they will in the end. if she would go along, i think they would, too. >> the democrats want about 1$18 trillion in stimulus money, but republican senate leader mitch mcconnell all but ruled that out

saying senators in his party would never support a package that big. twitter removed a tweet from white house coronavirus task force member dr. scott atlas. the tweet said masks work? no. a twitter spokesperson says the post violates a company policy that prohibits sharing false or misleading information about covid-19. dr. atlas is a former professor of medicine at stanford and is a senior fellow at the hoover institution. the holiday season won't be the same this year because of the pandemic of course. and despite the advice to only celebrate with immediate family members, health experts know some people will be participating in larger family gatherings. jobina jobina is at the live de what you can do to minimize getting sick. >> good morning. doctors say the only surefire way to prevent yourself from getting sick during this holiday season is to not participate in gatherings with your family members especially indoor

get to your door. before that, we check in again with mike. >> thank you very much. hi, everybody. i'll pull up some temperatures. let's look at what's going on in some neighborhoods. in the east bay it's clear. yeah. refreshing. look at those temperatures. mid to upper 50s through the tri valley. 60 to 64 around highway 4 in northern contra costa county. we have the 40s along 101. santa rosa and novato 47. san francisco, 55. san jose at about 59 degrees. here's a look at that 59 in san jose. comes with clear skies as we look north on 87 towards mineta san jose international. your commute planner is pretty good. smaller spread temperaturewise. you still need a coat this morning. remember to grab it before you leave this afternoon. you won't be wearing it then. light breezes out on the water. so here's a look at the fire danger index. you will look at it and go, well, why is there such a big

missing by family members a few days later. national park service searchers say another visitor gave rangers credible information that they had seen a woman matching her description. she was found sunday morning okay and reunited with her family. >> she hasn't ate since then at all. she has had very little water we found out. the moment i talked to her on the phone she said i love you so much. that was her signature thing to say to people she loved. i said i'm so glad you're coming home. >> she is now recovering in the hospital. b.a.r.t. is partnering with bay area community health to offer free testing today. there's a pop-up site at the b.a.r.t. union city station. it will be open today, tomorrow and thursday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. walk-ins are welcome. you must wear a mask at this

testing site. more resources for parents in marin county. the county's office of education will launch a school virus tracker on its website this week. the marin ij reports the virus tracker includes a map and dashboard. it shows if, when and where people may have been exposed to the coronavirus. nearly half of elementary and middle schools in marin county have opened or have plans to open for in-person learning. a sacramento county teacher being called a hero for calling for help for two distance learning students. jennifer peterson heard the students screaming for help after an online zoom class. someone broke into the home through the window. the intruder ran through the house escaping through the backyard after realizing someone was home. >> the teacher said call 911, she stood online with them. >> i was panicking inside. i was watching their faces. i could see their faces go from concern to actual panic.

theft guards. the walgreen's will close officially on november 11th and get this, this is the seventh walgreens to close in the city this year. you can read phil matier's columns in the chronicle on sundays and wednesdays. caltrans has cleaned up a massive homeless encampment in berkeley. there's so much debris at the encampment along interstate 80 at the university avenue overpass that the state brought in an excavator to clear it up yesterday. the work forced the closure of westbound i-80 on-ramp and the city tesays no tents will be removed. there's a new effort to make part of san francisco's great highway permanently car-free. the examiner reports that the great highway park initiative got more than 2,000 signatures online since the launch in june. the plan would transform the great highway into a park.
