golden gate bridge due to the off shore breezes you see blowing through the north bay up to 35 miles per hour at mt. saint helena and that is creating the fire threat and the red flag warning for the higher elevations of the north bay through 8:00 wednesday morning. as far as temperatures, a little bit warmer today thanks to that off shore breeze from near 70 at the coast and mid and upper 70s around san francisco and oakland, richmond and 80s just about everywhere else and east bay valleys 90s are possible. kumasi? >> thank you, mike. as we mentioned, here we go, again. pg&e is warning of another round of fire prevention shutoffs this week. 50,000 customers could lose electricity as early as tomorrow night. here in the bay area,near ly 70,000 homes and businesses. the areas near mt. diablo are most impacted. people all over the bay area are preparing for the next round

of potential outages right now. amy hollyfield live in danville with more on this. amy? >> hi, yes. we are in a high-risk area. this is stone valley and green valley road. this neighborhood has been alerted that the lights may be getting turned off as early as tomorrow night. so, this is the section of contra costa county that is under the warning. other county sections of these counties have been alerted by pg&e. alameda, napa, santa clara and sonoma. residents in marin county are dealing with the closure of fairfax. residents there tell us they will deal with road closures and outages if that is what needs to be done to keep people safe. >> it can be a busy road with people going through to the beach here but it's never terrible. it's not like the road to stenson. it's a back way. but definitely less traffic when the gate is closed. people who live on this road or any open space area, we're all

thinking about it every day. so, we appreciate the red flag warnings. >> definitely disappointed this is going into place but totally understand that having people up here is increasing the risk that they want to take the right precautions. >> reporter: pg&e is warning it might shut the power off to keep its equipment from possibly sparking a fire in the windy, hot, dry conditions that are expected. it has already been a deadly destructive fire season and this windy weather is expected for at least another week. residents are getting pretty good at preparing for these shutoffs telling us they have filled their freezer with ice and keeping their phones charged and embrace the outdoors. reporting live in danville, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you, amy. pg&e does call for these power shutoff an easy way to find out if you'll be affected. we have a tool where you can put

in your address and we have some information about what you should be doing right now before the power goes out. you can find all of that on our website, abc7news.com. today california's health and human services secretary will provide an update on the state's response to the pandemic. dr. mark ghaly is expected to reveal new guidelines for the reopening of theme parks and resuming team sports. dr. ghaly will speak at noon today. california is adding an extra layer of protection to its covid-19 vaccine approval process and announcing a group of 11 scientists will independently review the safety of any vaccine that receives fda approval before it is distributed in california. >> we will do our own independently reviewed process with our world class experts that just happened to live here in the state of california treasure-trove of experts. >> the committee includes

doctors from san francisco's department of public health, ucsf and uc berkeley and stanford. one ucsf epidemiologist we talked to knows many of the experts on that committee. >> enough distrust of the vaccine going around as it is that if this, if a committee like this takes an extra week and that encourages a greater proportion of people to get vaccinated, then it's hugely important. >> even if vaccines get fda emergency use authorization this year, we have been hearing about that. governor newsom says people should not expect widespread s distribution until 2021. santa clara county will vote on a program to provide low-interest loans to small businesses. one supervisor said it is rare to have relief funding from the county level. >> it's become clearer and clearer that if we wait for the

42-year-old starts at 11:00 this morning in oracle park. doctors have been treating covid-19 patients with antibodies taken from covid-19 survivors. blood from the sickest patients are the most effective, is the most effective because those antibodies produce a stronger response. according to researchers at john hopkins, age and gender can also play a role in this. specifically older men who have been hospitalized for covid-19 are among the strongest candidates for plasma donation. a wildfire that has been burning in colorado for more than two months is now the largest in state history. the cameron peak fire has 2004 acres. firefighters are battling the flames through intense winds of up to 50 miles an hour that whip up dust there. we want to check in with meteorologist mike nicco with a look at the conditions today.

they are expected to file that long anticipated lawsuit today. google which is set in mountain view an aggressive legal challenge to the company's dominance in the tech sector and could impact other big name companies like amazon and apple. >> big story we'll be watching there. dozens of bay area flight attendants will hold a demonstration outside of congresswoman's office in oakland. they're calling for immediate action to pass a covid-19 relief package to help struggling furloughed workers. it comes as air travel is starting to climb for the holidays. it screened the most passengers since the pandemic started. on sunday more than 1 million people through airport security checkpoints. still down 60% compared to last year. the cdc is also now strongly recommending masks on public transportation for all travelers 2 years and older.

abc7news.mco. coronavirus are surging across the u.s. they advise people to wear masks when traveling on public transportation and something we're already doing in the bay area. the new recommendation comes as nearly 400,000 new kacases are reported nationwide. hospitalizations are up in 41 states and 21% of hospitals in the u.s. are running low on icu beds. most of the u.s. is dealing with a so-called third wave of coronavirus, california and most of the bay area are managing this outbreak well. the state's rate of spread is down slightly over the past ten days and it's stable. sonoma county is the only county to report an increase in the bay area but health experts say we're not in the clear yet. >> we've been here before, right. we were doing great at the end of may and it got away from us. we don't want that top haen again. >> yesterday governor newsom pointed out that hospitalizations and icu admissions have been going up

the past week and that could be a sign that another wave is just around the corner, especially with holiday season here. with that in mind, health officials are encouraging all of us to just hunker down until a vaccine is approved. jobina is at the live desk with an update on vaccine development. >> yes, julian. so, moderna has an updated timeline for its vaccine. the drugmaker ceo told "wall street journal" it expects to get the results for a vaccine trial next month. if all goes well here, moderna could get emergency use in december. moderna's timeline on track withifies with pfizer that it may apply for emergency use notification by november. if a vaccine is approved by the federal government, may not be immediately cleared in california. yesterday governor newsom announced a covid-19 scientific safety review work group. 11 california doctors are on the

let's take a look at what the weather is going to do to your morning and it is going to be a little difficult along the coast. thick fog at half moon bay 50 and low to mid 50s everywhere until you get over to redwood city. and let's take a look else where. we have the 40s up in the north bay valleys, as you would expect. 50s else where until you get to antioch at 61 and up in the hills it's in the 70s. warmer day today than it was yesterday. 58 right now in san jose. you can see pretty quiet for your commute other than that patchy fog that is roaming around the coast. the golden gate bridge and i've seen some also around napa that was a couple hours ago. some floating around the bay also. let's take a look at the winds. the big issue with this particular red flag warning. you can see as we head into the afternoon and early evening hours, they peak and they start to push around 20, 25 with gusts even higher than that up to 40. higher elevations and then they calm down a little bit and overnight one more burst of wind and that is the key with this forecast. not a complete onslot of winds

if you're into stargazing maybe a little remote learning for the kids at night. yeah. the orion meteor shower is expected to be at its peak in the next couple nights with enough darkness and clear skies in about 30 minutes to let your eyes adjust you might be able to spot up to 30 shooting stars an hour and they move faster. some of the fastest shooting stars up to 148,000 miles per hour. the meteor shower is made from dust and ice from the tail of haley's comet and it is clear everywhere tonight. peninsula coast, that would probably be the least likely place. here's a look at what is going on from sutro tower. we have a little bit of fog along the peninsula coast and some floating around the san pab low bay but not as much as yesterday. look at the temperatures. definitely going to be warmer from near 70 at the coast to near 90 inland.

candidate only twice in the last 50 years. and, of course, we will be airing the second and final presidential debate this thursday night. coverage begins at 6:00 p.m. right here on abc7. today the san francisco board of education is set to vote on a controversial admission's policy change for an elite high school. we're talking about lowell high school which is nationally recognized. it admits students based on grades and state test scores but because of the pandemic, a plan to switch for one year to a lottery system. some parents, though, they are opposed to that idea saying the hard work students put in during middle school would be overlooked. the board meets at 3:00 this afternoon. new at 6:00, lessons learned in education. a new study looked at best practices for online or in-person classes for kids during the pandemic. jobina is at the live desk with the findings. >> yes, kumasi. the university of washington study featured on "gma" looked at how different countries

handled the return back to school and also remote learning. what we're learning here is that denmark was one of the first countries to resume in-person learning in may. kids were initially put into small cohorts and now school is relatively normal with class sizes of 24 students. in south korea, students going to school use a covid-19 symptom tracker and must check their temperatures five times each day. >> we take turns going to school. in the fist werst week, the sev graders go to school and the eighth graders and ninth graders stay home taking online classes. >> researchers recommend countries be careful reopening the schools because going back and forth between opening and closing schools could be hard psyc psychologically on children. they also found schools were not the driver to covid-19. today the board of education will vote on creating a black

advantage of ultralow mortgage rates to scoop up a shrinking number of homes on the market. only took a median of 11 days to sell a single family home last month. that is a low since the association started keeping track. well, this morning, home depot is hiring ahead of the holidays if you're looking. the company says it's looking to fill nearly 600 full-time and part-time positions throughout the area. that includes customer service, overnight freight and filling online and curbside orders. you can apply on home depot's website. all right. let's take a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets under way this morning. >> you can see that numbers are trading up this morning, again, after a tough day on the markets closing about 400 points down as it looks like republicans and democrats passing any type of coronavirus stimulus. of course, updates as we get them throughout the morning. you can expect some changes in lake tahoe this ski season, but mostly indoors. because of the pandemic, there

brian. here's some dry breezes and warmer temperatures today. those dry breezes will keep us in the fire threat all the way through at least friday and cooler weather this weekend. the possibility of one more off shore event saturday night. keep that in the back of your mind. for now, let's focus on today. 82 in sunnyvale and 90 in gilroy. 78 in millbrae to about 84 in redwood city. near 70 along the peninsula coast with mid 70s in downtown, south san francisco and sausalito. look at that near 70 north bay coast with more sunshine there. and temperatures in the mid 80s to near 90 through the north bay valleys. along the east bay shore 77 at fremont and 82 in castro valley. upper 80s to low 90s in our east bay valleys. thankfully for those long, cool nights. get that trapped into the house and then shut the windows this morning and then try to live on that for the rest of the day so you don't have to use the air conditioner. 50 for most of us tonight and notice the lack of clouds in many areas. 60s and 70s in our hills and here's our next fire threat.
