it is going away. >> 220,000 americans dead. anyone responsible for that many deaths should not remain as president of the united states of america. >> critical night in the race for the white house. the presidential candidates went head-to-head for the final debate before election day and we have team coverage for you. >> yes. let's begin with liz in the newsroom. >> reporter: tonight was in many ways a 180 from the debate we saw two weeks ago. the candidates were combative but allowed each other to speak leading to a healthy and informative debate. with joe biden wearing a mask as he walked on the president destage and president trump without one, the two candidates clashed from the get-go. it started off with coronavirus and how best to open the country amid the pandemic. >> if you need to have a restaurant you need to have plexiglass dividers.

you need to be in a position where you can take testing rapidly and know whether a person is infected. you need to be able to trace. >> these are businesses with no money. putting up flplexiglass is unbelievably expensive. you go to sit there in a cubicle wrapped in plastic? >> reporter: the attacks got personal with the president going after biden's son, hunter and biden attacked trump over his tax returns. one of the most heated moments came in a debate over immigration. >> talk about what we are talking about. what happened? parents' kids were ripped from their arms and separated and now they can't find over 500 sets of parents and those kids are alone. nowhere to go. nowhere to go. nowhere to go. it is criminal. >> they are so well taken care

of. they are in facilities that were so clean. >> reporter: the president transitioned to obama era immigration laws. >> catch and release is a disaster. a murderer, a rapist, a very bad person would come in. we would take their name. we have to release them into our country. >> reporter: the debate was less chaotic than the first two weeks ago. a change by the debate commission to mute the mics. a final heated exchange came on the topic of race. >> i am the least racist person. i can't see the audience because it is so dark. i don't care who is in the audience. i am the least racist persons in the room. >> abraham lincoln -- he pours fuel on every single racist fire. every single one. >> reporter: character was a big focus of the debate. biden tried to draw contrast

between himself and the president and the president tried to frame biden as a classic politician. both campaigns appear happy with the performance and both are claiming victory. no surprise there. it was at least, liz, a real debate tonight. debate watch parties had to get creative because of the pandemic. in san francisco a drive-in watch party was held at fort mason. j.r. stone has reaction from the event and around the bay area. >> reporter: they were honking in favor of joe biden at this drive-in debate party at san francisco's fort mason. >> who wants joe biden as their next president? can i get a honk? that is right, everyone. that is right. >> reporter: while support for biden was strong at this event, former chairman of the california republican party not so fast. he believes tonight was a win for president trump. >> biden now is going to have to

explain why he thinks his son's laptop is a russian hoax. where trump gets to say i am not the politician, he is. i get things done. biden hasn't. >> reporter: those watching the debate out of their trunks say there were surprises. >> i think trump is acting more civil than i thought he would. >> very surprising compared to how the first one, even through the honking here. compared to the first debate, being able to hear each of the people talking. >> reporter: knowing the mics could be turned off helped both candidates. if she had to pick a winner? >> i think joe biden had quicker and more policy-oriented responses than donald trump did. >> j.r. stone, abc 7 news. now this was the first presidential debate in which the candidate's microphones were muted at times to allow both time to speak uninterrupted.

we asked our chronicle insider if it worked. >> it was embarrassing. the idea that we had a presidential debate where you had to mute the microphones. come on. that is where we are, starting from that? it is not a good place to be. it controlled both sides. it gave joe biden his two minutes to get out there and say what he wanted to say and trump his. they still ran over each others times. >> abc 7 was fact checking both candidates in the debate. very tense moments in oakland when a grass fire broke out in windy red flag conditions. flames seen burning along the freeway near 35th avenue from sky 7 as you can see here. when the winds pushed the flames towards apartment building, the oakland fire department called in more help. oakland fire said that it started in a homeless

encampment. those are part of the reason why a red flag warning is in effect tonight. right now there are scattered power outages because of the windy conditions and fire conditions in northern california. none of those are in the bay area. >> no. pge says no shut offs are possible from sunday to tuesday when more dangerous winds pick up. >> the winds are expected to really ramp up. right now the winds, gusting to 36 out of the north on mount diablo. they have increased since earlier in the day. humidity is very low. red flag warning in effect for the northeast bay hills and valleys until 8:00 a.m.

tomorrow. gusts 35 to 45 combined with the dry fuelings and low humidity means that the fire danger will be running high to very high and particularly in the north bay through the morning. you will notice parts of the inland east bay high as well. the red flag warning then goes over to a fire weather watch from sunday until tuesday. i will be back with a look at that and how much stronger the winds are going to be this coming weekend. >> great. see you shortly. new details in oakland after a six-hour stand off with a double murder suspect came to a peaceful end. the gunman barricaded himself in a shoe store, took a hostage and opened fire. matt boon spoke with an employee next door who said that bullets cut through the walls. >> he tried to shoot the wall down. he let off six rounds. >> reporter: bernardo works right next to the wss shoe store. >> it hit the back room and then

one of the bullets hit this wall down here as well. >> it was a good thing -- >> it was a good thing we evacuated. nobody was there>> reporter: police cleared them out evacuating a nearby super market as well, telling others to shelter in place. >> we had a six block perimeter set up. >> reporter: the suspect took one of the employees hostage. police were able to safely negotiate the release of the employee around 2:00 but said the suspect kept firing more rounds. >> the armed gunman is in distress, highly agitated. very challenging with the communication. >> police say the suspect was wanted in connection to a double homicide last week on 84th avenue in oakland. after six hours they coaxed him out, bringing him in to custody. >> we will continue to demonstrate to our community that we are serious about reducing the violence and for

those that are responsible for the violence we will seek to take you in custody. oakland unified school district is apologizing for releasing a survey that included a racist term for people of asian descent. they released a statement saying we are sorry to anyone who saw it and felt the crushing weight of historic racism associated with the word. district officials are working to find any digital security issue that might have led to the problem and they will send a replacement survey soon. >> a california appeals court ruled uber and lyft violated a labor law. it goes against assembly bill 5 granting fair wage. the ruling raises the stakes for
