usaa. what you're made of, we're made for. usaa total darkness and dishes that aren't done. the power shut off came early in some areas. and ta are not happy about it. >> firefighters and pilots are ready to respond to any potential fires. >> strong gusty winds peaking over night. >> good evening. thank you for joining us. right away we have team coverage for you tonight. up in the north bay. one of the first places in the bay area where residents had power cut. in the east bay where residents have been told they should be thinking about evacuating because of the fire danger. we start with the meteorologist monitoring those winds and they

are picking up. >> they are. i want to show you current winds. they are strongest through parts of north bay. napa gusting to 35 miles per hour. fair field 38 miles per hour. we see strong gusts in the east bay. oakland and hayward and concord. over 35 miles per hour. if we go to the higher elevation it's stronger than that. check out mount hood. gusts up to 60 miles per hour. these are the drying northeast winds. the wind advisory in effect until tomorrow. at 11:00. gusts up to 70 miles per hour. in some of the higher elevations. watch out for the possible down trees and of course the power outages. peek winds will be hitting over the next couple hours. >> sounds good. thank you. the high winds have forced pg&e to shut off power to 631,000 customers across northern california. >> this event is by the far the

largest we have experienced this year. the most extreme weather. >> we're entering a significant risk period. we're doing everything we can to reduce the risk of wild fire. >> all of that means turning off the pour. pg&e predicts 106,000 customers in the bay area will lose power by the time the process is pleat. expected in an hour or so. they have posted this map on the web site. you can see each of the purple triangles marks a location of a public safety power shut off. the north bay was the first where it was cut tonight. some people are frus at a timed after they lost power sooner than expected. >> live now from glen. where it looks like the power has been shut off there too. >> it certainly has. the winds have died doin in the

last 20 to 30 minutes. one hour ago it was a different story. leaves were blowing all over the place. we have used every light we have to focus on this tree. the branchs were whipping around every which angle. a different story now. 30 minutes makes a difference. however there are major concerns coming from business owners. >> total darkness in the town. the public safety power shut off is in effect. the winds can be felt. the impact whipping tree branchs and flags. restaurant owners are angry for what happened midafternoon sunday. >> at 3:00 boom power went out an hour before it was supposed to. it was really disappointing. we needed that time. >> i don't know if they saw winds coming early. and they chose to shut down.

it was frustrating. >> there are dirty dishes in the dark because when the power went out so did any use of well water. those from pg&e say that of the more than 24 how outages, around 1,400 are due to weather. and likely high winds that caused an early outage. they are now just hoping they don't lose what's on ice in the freezing. >> a couple weeks ago we lost all the food in there. it was probably over 15, $20,000. >> many residents have generators and are using them to power refrigerators. many are growing frustrated over another shut off. >> it's getting awful tiring. going through this. it's getting awful tiring and i have lived here all my life i haven't seen anything like this. in the last three years.

district put out a detailed map showing the areas it believes are at the highest risk to see fire. you can see them in orange. there's a stretch from richmond. and another one in highway 24. that covering lafayette. on top of the potential for fire, there are planned power outages in contra costa county as well as the oakland hills. according to pg&e, this area won't be getting it electricity until perhaps tomorrow night at the earliest. our coverage continues. in downtown lafayette. >> as you can see the wind is picking up here. this is the reality of 200,000 pg&e customers. the only light shining in this intersection is from our camera. i'll give you perspective as to what 17,000 residents are experiencing tonight.

medical response team. and a fire bucket to create a line of defense ahead of the ground crew. >> we call it dipping. we dip into the water and fly over the fire kp drop the water. >> both crew members have to agree it's safe to fly. if that's the case, they have to brng light. >> they are monitoring the weather conditions. as they gear up for deployment in the morning. in case of fire. >> it's very high wind offshore. on shore we're doing okay. there's a little bit of high wipd coming down through redding sacramento. >> the public safety power shut off was projected to begin at 8:00 p.m. some lost power about an hour ago. if you are in the fire prone areas and receive a notification but have power, make sure to charge your phone just to be red dichlt -- ready.

>> thanks to you. pg&e has set up more than 100 daytime community resource centers across the state. during the power outage. this within opened at 8:00 a.m. today. all the centers provide bathrooms and hand washing stations and medical equipment. wi-fi is available. you will be able to charge your phone and laptop. bottled water and snacks are available. indoor centers off air-conditioning or heating. seating and ice. some will have vehicle charging. they close at 10:00 p.m. are open at 8:00 a.m. >> oakland schools are keeping an eye on the forecast. the nams of the schools. that could be impacted by the shut off. there are 12 in total. we reached out to the district for updates and haven't heard back. if the power does go out at students homes they can do work offline and report it back to

their teachers. >> hotel in berkeley opening to people who are fleeing from the fire zone. it was closed this weekend due to slow business. people looking for a safe place to stay began calling for reservations. they decided to reopen. it's offering a special $90 rate for evacuees. and six people have reservations tonight. it started with a phone callne >> are you willing to open up for people who might be evacuating? we immediately said yes. it's something we wanted to do for the community. and if ever there was a time the community needs to stick together it's now. >> the owner says they will stay open for as long as people need a place to stay. >> be sure to stay with us for the latest on the wind event and public safety shut off. get the latest up dates on the news app. and watch a special early

of martin luther king, jr. way. police issued an alert advise r residents to avoid the area. gunfire from officers during a man hunt have left a man in critical condition. not far from the high school. police were trying to pull over a driver for traffic violation. he took police on a chase and escaped by running from his car. two officers in uniform then returned to the area in an unmarked car to search for him and say an unrelated car pulled up behind them. officers say they fired after the driver pointed a gun in their direction. a neighbor said had saw the man after he was shot. >> i saw the police. there was a guy on the ground with a gun in his hand and the police were telling him get your hands up. >> police tell us the man who was shot was noft the original suspect. he's 43 year-old and lives in the neighborhood. where the shooting happened. >> a driver is accused of intentionally hitting a

firefighter. earlier this morning fire crews were at a shopping center parking lot. on a medical call. police say he began asking them questions. investigators say he was asked to leave. got into his car and drove toward the firefighters and hit one. he was subsequently arrested. he has a prior conviction and had a loaded gun in his car. the firefighter was not seriously hurt the latest on the coronavirus pandemic. starting with california. the state has had more than 898,000 cases. nationwide there have been more than 8.6 million cases. and a tragic news milestone today. according to to data. u.s. surpassed 225,000 deaths from covid-19. this morning the presidnt chief of staff had this prediction on state of the union. >> we're thot going to control the pandemic.

fire risk so far this year. pg&e shutting off power to hundreds of thousands of customers in parts of 36 counties. the utility says the extreme fire conditions pose an increase risk for damage to the electric system that has the potential to ignite fire. >> over 17,000 people have lost power in contra costa. a gas station forced to close and the traffic lights are also out. pg&e says they won't see the power restored until tomorrow night at the soonest. >> in the north bay more than 50,000 people lost electricity. it went off sooner than expected. >> people were racing to get ready and protect their property. >> she had friends come by to help her cut the trees arpd her house.
