>> so that means turning off the power. pg&e says nearly 106,000 customers in the bay area are without power this morning and that is to prevent wildfires from starting. each of the purple triangles marks the location of a public safety power shutoff. taking a look closer to some of the neighborhoods without power. amy hollyfield live in lafayette this morning. >> reporter: good morning. a dark and windy lafayette, the businesses behind me, this noah's bagels does not have power, but when i type in different addresses the neighborhoods south of here do have power, addresses in moraga do not have power. it's scattered throughout this area. take a look at some video, you will see as you drive down mt. diablo boulevard in lafayette it is dark, the only lights are from the car head lights and the portable lights they use for construction crews that there

are a lot of darkened businesses without generators probably going to have to be closed today. pg&e believes that this psps should last for two days. some people tell us they can't wait that long to get their power back. we met a college student who is going to head home to southern california, she's now without electricity and wifi at st. mary's in moraga. >> i can't do school without wifi, especially because we are all online so it's impossible because we can't go to in-person classes. so i told my mom and she was like, yeah, let's book you a flight home right away. >> reporter: if these winds spark a fire contra costa firefighters are ready to go on the ground and in the air. they have two helicopters with expandable water buckets ready to go, they can drop water on any flames that pop up. they also have ground crews ready to go, but the weather will play a role in whether the helicopters can go up.

county where glen allen lost power restaurant owners at tips roadside just north in kenwood were pretty angry for what happened in midafternoon. >> at 3:00, boom, power went out an hour before it was supposed to and it was really -- it was really disappointing because we needed that time to get everything on ice. >> i don't know if they saw wind coming early and that's why they chose to shut down early, but it was just frustrating. >> reporter: at one point on sunday more than 24,000 customers in sonoma county were without power and about 14 of them -- 1,400 of them lost power he recalledy due to high winds which is likely what caused an early outage is that restaurant. more than 13,000 customers are expected to lose power here in marin county. reporting live from mill valley, lauren martinez, abc 7 news. >> thank you, lauren. pg&e has set up more than

even a few mid 60s out there like this 63 in oakland, 61 hayward, where we are not having much in the way of winds, los gatos 48 tucked in there in one of those valleys. 58 here as we look from the exploratorium. let's break down your day. it's going to be difficult working from home or remote learning, especially if you don't have any power. you have to figure out how to use natural light and some other ways of getting online if you can. it's going to be breezy, dry and dusty if you are going to be out and about, whether it's exercising or just doing whatever you do on a monday. a look at our humidity, we're running below 20% and down at the lower elevations it's down to even 10% in santa rosa, 11% in oakland, 13% one of our more humid areas, half-moon bay and san francisco 28%. tongue in cheek, i put the moon up there as a reference to how dry it is but it gives you an idea. when we have single digit dew points that's what the temperature would have to cool

to for dew to form. we would have to be down in the single digits that's how dry the air is. let's focus back on the fire danger. it is either very high orange or red extreme everywhere even in the santa cruz mountains, very high. as we head throughout the day notice santa cruz goes away, we're still very high in the east bay hills and still critical to extreme up in the north bay as we head into the evening hours and then as we go into the overnight hours through tomorrow morning we're still holding a few spots of high to very high in the east bay, but the extreme is still up in the north bay and then by tomorrow at 5:00 it's out of here and we can start talking about some really cold overnight temperatures which we wil do next. here is sue, she's in this morning and has your traffic. >> good morning, mike. good morning, everyone. we're going to talk windy as well, mike, with high wind advisories across all bay area bridges. not just san matteo, altamonte pass and the bay bridge, but the golden gate, dumbarton, antioch, all the bridges are gusty and

you have to hang on to that steering wheel. i came over the waldo grade this morning and it was really windy on that as well. we're looking at that and pretty light right now as far as traffic goes and we will come back in just a few minutes and give you an update on the current traffic flow conditions. guys? >> thank you, sue. san francisco's response to covid-19 is being touted as, quote, successful compared with other cities across the country. the "l.a. times" is reporting of the 20 most populous cities in the u.s., san francisco has the lowest death rate per capita from covid-19. mayor breed implemented a shelter in place order more than seven months ago. a doctor of ucsf said if the entire country followed the city's approach there would be 50,000 people dead instead of more than 225,000. also says people in san francisco tend to follow health rules more than in other places. last week the city became the first in california to entered the least restrictive tier for reopening.

all right. here is a look from sutro tower this morning. you can see it bouncing around because of the winds. let's break down your day. we've got mainly 50s out there through 7:00, 60s at noon and we will hit the 70s this afternoon. a mild breeze no doubt, temperatures average if not a little bit above average. by 7:00 we are back in the 50s and 60s. here is a look at our wind gusts and this is at 5:00 and you can see there still potential for 30 to 40 mile per hour winds and then by 11:00 when it fades the wind advisory most of our winds in our lower elevations fade, they will still be a little gusty 10 to 20 mile per hour in the north bay overnight. this week on abc 7 we are showing you the new way to holiday looking at how the holiday season and so many of the traditions that we take for granted every year are being affected by coronavirus. specifically mental health and coping strategies for a time of year that's already challenging for many of us, even without a pandemic. here is abc 7 news reporter

district superintendent is recommending to allowed staggered in-person learning, participation for school activities and let families decide between the hybrid or full year distance learning programs. classes could resume in january. families are finding some pretty creative ways to celebrate halloween this year. one father created a zoom costume for his daughter replicating the zoom interface with nine spooky participants. they include photos of his daughter in costumes. one box as you can see is reserved for the next victim. so if someone gets close enough to her they will appear in the box thanks to an ipad with a front-facing camera taped to the board. now, that is a really creative halloween costume. i like to see that. time is 4:46. we want to check in with mike for a look at our forecast. >> thank you, kumasi. let's take a look at what's going on with our sutro cam once again. you can see it bouncing around there, we have those breezes out there, it's about 57 degrees,

fire danger is going to be highest this morning for all of us, it will taper a little bit as we head into the afternoon and overnight hours, but it will still be very high up in the mountains. chilly nights on the way, is your furnace working? you might want to change those filters for sure after all that smoke we have had. and the weekend, we will see it's trending pretty seasonal. why is this air so dry? look at the jet stream. look at how far to the north it's going, almost all the way up to the arctic circle, grabbing that bone dry air and shooting it right down into our neighborhoods. in fact, you can see on the water vapor imagery we are so close to that orange which is the driest of the dry air and consequently you can see all those red flag warnings whether they're here, nevada, arizona or even utah. very dangerous situation across the west just not us. we are not the only ones dealing with this. today's temperatures near 70 along the coast, mid to upper 70s. tonight the breezes will be up just enough that it will keep us

in the 40s and 30s. 40s in the valleys, fremont, even palo alto could drop into the 40s like the south bay but i think the 30s are on our way tuesday night into wednesday, wednesday night into thursday. because this air is so dry, we're talking about temperatures that will warm nearly 40 degrees from morning into afternoon. we will drop down to closer to average temperatures friday and it looks really nice for halloween. don't forget, set your clocks back, we lose that -- we gain an hour of sleep as we head into

"the new york times" is reporting that apple receives 8 to 12 billion dollars a year in the deal but now the partnership is in jeopardy. last week the justice department filed an antitrust lawsuit against google. listen to this story, a 24-year-old created a website to track every broken mcdonald's ice cream machine in the country. it's called mcbroken and it shows a map of every location in the u.s., the green dots mean there is a working machine, the red dots mean the machine is not working and we checked this morning because that's what we do and it shows that there are some broken machines in san francisco and in san jose, so before you head out, just be warned. the american music awards are less than a month away. up next, the celebrity on gma this morning to announce the nominees. and former california governor arnold schwarzenegger
