good morning on this october 26th. everyone wondering about the dangerous wind conditions. let's get to abc7 news meteorologist mike nicco. >> all right. hi, everybody. let's talk about what's going on. red flag warning, nothing has changed here. 11:00 for the lower elevations and the coast. 5:00 tomorrow afternoon for our higher elevations. we've had 70-mile-per-hour winds, those are hurricane and severe thunderstorm thresholds. most dangerous winds will go through 11:00. from 8:00 to 10:00, we'll see another real strong burst of winds, maybe even faster than what we're dealing with right now, 46 in napa. 43 in fairfield. 30 in hayward. 34 in san francisco. 22 in san jose. up in the higher elevations, 55 in diablo, 36 in st. helena. the worst of it is still ahead

of us. >> thank you, mike. firefighters put out a small grass fire along interstate 580 alonging along regatta boulevard in richmond. fires were reported in castro valley and healdsburg. firefighters worked to stop these fires quickly before they could reach homes and other buildings. >> because of the dangerous fire conditions pg&e cut off power to more than 106,000 people across the bay area. people in the north bay were some of the first to go dark. lauren martinez is live in mill valley. >> here in mill valley you can see some degree in the strebris.

restaurant owners at tip's roadside in kenwood were angry after they lost power an hour before they were told it was scheduled to be shut off. they hope they don't lose what's on ice in their freezer. >> a couple weeks ago, we lost all the food in there. it was probably 15,000, $20,000. >> everything is so much harder now because of covid, fires, power outages. it's just -- you know, everybody is saying i can't wait for 2020 to be over. hopefully, you know, '21 will be much better. >> at one point 24,000 customers were affect ted here in sonoma county. reporting live from sonoma, lauren martinez, abc7 news. in the east bay, lower winds

and higher humidity are creating a higher fire danger. those are the ones shaded in orange. there's a stretch running from richmond down to el cerrito and another one in the highway 24 corridor. amy hollyfield is live in lafayette this morning with what's going on there. >> it's very dark here in lav ye lafayette. this whole strip, lots of breakfast and coffee issues gone this morning, the options. but over there, the whole foods is lit up really standing out with all of its lights on. they tell me they have two generators keeping them with power this morning. really going to extreme measures to stay in business today. firefighters say they are ready in the event that this wind does spark any fires. they have crews and they have

gear on stand by ready to go, including two helicopters based at buchanan field. they can be up within minutes if the weather is cooperating, of course. >> it depends on how close the fire and water source are together, but with the helicopter, especially a light helicopter like this, you like to have a close water source. so you can make a lot of drops. >> something to keep in mind if you're heading out this morning, it is so dark. a lot of traffic signals are not working. approach those intersections carefully, treat them as four-way stops. don't assume it's normal out here. it's not. it's dark, it's windy and it's cold. check on your neighbors. if you have power, others may

merge. the snow is dampening the dry fuel but also making operating equipment more dangerous. can we just have something positive without a negative? homeowners are worried the cold temperatures can damage pipes. the two fires burned more than 400,000 acres. we're not in this alone. we have other folks dealing with almost as bad a situation as we're dealing with. let's look at our fire danger, right now everybody is very high to high in the higher elevations. some of that yellow is creeping down into our lower elevations. as we head through time, at least by 2:00, you can see the santa cruz mountains are out of the high for now. with the high to very high in the east bay hills, the diablo range and the extreme, the worst category for fire index continuing across the north. as we head to bed tonight at 11:00, still high to very high in the east bay hills, the diablo range in the north bay, even sparking extreme at times

most urgent thing to know this morning is what is happening with our fire danger. one of the top stories at abc7news.com right now. and that is not surprising because thousands of people are in the dark, no power because pg&e has cut them off to reduce the risk of wildfire. the utility says the purple triangles represent nearly 107,000 bay area customers that are currently without power. and most of those areas won't see the lights on until at least tomorrow. pg&e is opening community resource centers to help residents with charging devices, getting connected to wifi and air conditioning or heating. they'll provide water and snacks and some have electric car chargers. sonoma county decided to cancel distance learning because of the power outages. guerneville, kenwood school districts are all closed today. you can get the latest information on abc7news.com. president trump plans to make three campaign appearances today with rallies across the

battleground state of pennsylvania. joe biden has no events planned. but vice presidential candidate california senator kamala harris will be appearing on "the view" at 10:00 a.m. on abc7. with eight days to go until election day, more than 1.7 million bay area residents have already voted. california has mailed ballots to every registered voter this year because of covid-19. in order to count mail-in ballots they have to be signed, dated and post marked by election day which is november 3rd. in los angeles, more than 50 black cowboys rode through the streets of compton on horseback to encourage people to vote. the cowboys wore leather jackets and ten gallon hats as they delivered their votes to the ballot boxes yesterday. they call themselves the compton cowboys. they're part of an organization that uses horseback riding and equestrian culture to make a positive impact on inner city youth. cal fire crews stepped up to help a young giants fan whose

baseball card collection got burned during the creek fire in fresno county. 9-year-old reese osterburg has been collecting baseball cards for two years. he's part of a group of kids who lost their homes and hundreds of cards. >> i was sad because i'm a huge fan. my favorite one in the collection was buster posy. >> now cal fire crews are leading the step up the play campaign to help these kids rebuild their collection. >> the first question some of the kids asked were what about my baseball cards? this is real near and dear to their heart. this is an opportunity for us to help them out and replace some of those cards they lost. >> there's been an overwhelming response across the central valley. chief brown says donations can be dropped off at any cal fire station. >> i love that. they've been through enough already. sometimes it's the little things. >> she looks so sweet. i want everything for her, mike.

>> yeah. that's tough, isn't it, when you lose stuff like that? let's best out of this weather forecast. it's 47 on tam. you can see there's colder air lurking above us this morning. the winds are blowing out of the north-northwest 12 to 30 miles per hour. you can see the camera bouncing around there. for today, sunny and mild with our highest fire threat during the morning hours. it will be mainly cooler with the fire threat moving into our upper elevations as we head into the overnight hours and this weekend it's really looking nice. here's a look at that area of high pressure that is steering that -- that steered the dry cold front through yesterday. could you tell when it came in? winds picked up, temperatures started to drop a bit. now it's bringing us a strong offshore event with these critical weather fire conditions. look at that dry air on top of us. we're in the bowl of some of the driest air out there across the world right now. breezy and mild this afternoon.

storm-force winds. just a couple more miles per hour, you have hurricane force. 58 in oakland last evening. that's the threshold for a severe thunderstorm. amazing the winds we've had so far. >> mike will continue looking at it. the sf marin food bank is putting out an urgent call for volunteers and donations because they're so low in supplies for the holidays. of course the pandemic is making things worse. according to the marin ij, the food bank has 60 open slots for volunteers at the san rafael warehouse and 38 slots to work at six pop-up pantries in the county. they especially need help during the weekdays. officials say the sf marin food bank is serving about 60,000 households every week and that is nearly double the number it was helping before covid-19. new at 6:00, with the winter months pretty much around the corner, restaurants are trying to figure out how they can have people dine outside in cold weather areas. restaurants are thinking ahead.

some owners in colorado are building enclosed patios, putting in heat lamps because snow has already arrived. >> you don't really want to be snowed on when you're ordering a lovely entry dish. we talked to many other restaurants around the city, they're doing things like building enclosures and outdoor spaces, or indoor/outdoor combinations. >> back here at home so far san francisco has not issued updated guidelines for dining out during winter. restaurants can now operate indoors at 25% capacity. i think this is important because i was -- i was sitting outside eating throughout the whole weekend, and i was still chilly and i'm like it's going to get colder. they had lamps and blankets, too. i felt good. >> the heat lamps are everywhere. they're expensive for the restaurants to run, but that's what they have to do to keep in business. coming up next at 6:30, we're back to bring you our full team coverage on the bay area

30 in hayward. 37 in san francisco. the 46 in napa. 29 in santa rosa. 26 in sonoma. 22 in san jose. so, we are definitely dealing with some dangerous winds there. some damaging winds. a lot of debris on the roads this morning if you're driving, be aware of that. a lot of cross breezes across our bridges where the winds are faster because there's nothing to slow them down over that open water. there's just no friction. right now we're 34 in st. helena. 55 in diablo. those are down from the 60 and 70-mile-per-hour gusts we had earlier this morning or late last night. 11:00 this morning, lower elevations, the red flag warning has not changed. that's when it will stop for you. higher elevations through 5:00 tomorrow afternoon. the fastest winds are all the way through 11:00. i think a burst between 8:00 and 10:00 wouldn't be surprising once the sun comes up and

overturns the atmosphere and the higher winds work their way down towards us. there's the possibility of downed stree down ed trees and power outages. >> thank you, mike. breaking news in the east bay we want to tell you about, crews are on the scene of a wildfire along eastbound 580 in castro valley. this is about a half mile west of eden canyon. the alameda county fire department says it came within 50 feet of reaching a home before crews were able to get it under control. thankfully no one got hurt. firefighters have been busy responding to calls of wires and trees down throughout alameda county because of the strong winds in the area. high winds across northern california have forced pg&e to shut off power to hundreds of thousands of customers. >> this event is by far the largest we have experienced this year, the most extreme weather. >> we are just entering this significant and dangerous risk period. >> we're doing everything that we can at pg&e to reduce the

risk of wildfires. >> so that means turning off the power. pg&e says nearly 107,000 customers in the bay area are without power this morning and that is to prevent wildfires from igniting. pg&e posted a public safety power shutoff map on their website and it shows you where the outages are right now. the oakland unified school district says the public safety power shutoff is affecting six of its schools, and those are grass valley elementary, howard elementary, montclair elementary, thornhill elementary, king estates. they can do their work offline and report it back to the teachers once they get the chance. our team coverage continues with a look at the power outages in the north bay. they were the first to have power cut as early as yesterday afternoon. lauren martinez is live in sn m sonoma county with what's going on there. >> good morning. we were in mill valley earlier, i can tell you the winds are

stronger up here than they were in marin county. now, last night we were in glen allen where that community was in the dark. they lost power yesterday. restaurant owners at tips roadside just north in kenwood were pretty angry for what happened in mid afternoon. >> at 3:00, boom, power went out an hour before it was supposed to. it was disappointing. we needed that time to get everything on ice. >> i don't know if they saw wind coming early and that's why they chose to shut down early, but it was just frustrating. >> about 1,400 customers in sonoma county lost power early due to high winds, which is likely what caused that early outage for that restaurant. now sonoma county has the highest number of customers impacted by these shutoffs at 24,000 customers. reporting live from sonoma, lauren martinez, abc7 news.

pg&e has set up more than 100 daytime community resource centers across the state during these power outages. they will open at 8:00 this morning. this is the center in moraga. all the centers have bathrooms, hand washing stations, medical equipment, wifi, you can charge your phone and laptop and you can also pick up bottled water and snacks. some centers also offer electric vehicle charging. we want to get another check of that weather with mike nicco. the all-important wind speeds right now. mike, you say that just a little later on this morning we could be in more trouble. >> yeah. when the sun comes up it heats the ground. when it heats the ground, that air rises, and it's supplanted by the cooler wind above us. that cooler wind above us has faster winds in it. faster speeds. so that's why i think there will be a burst between 8:00, 9:00,

maybe 8:00 to 10:00. in alum rock, those winds are running around 45-mile-per-hour to 50-mile-per-hour right now. temperatures running from 46 in los altos to about 59 in san jose right now. 48 in lafayette. one of those areas sheltered from the winds. the rest of us are in the 50s and 60s. as far as the bay bridge toll plaza, you can see it's pretty clear, but there's a crosswind of about 30, 35 miles per hour when you get on the bridge. watch out for that. it's breezy and choppy out on the water. here is the humidity right now, up in the hills, down to 12% in tam taialpais tamalpais. danville, 5%. novato and santa rosa, 8% and 9%. super dry. look at these dew points, they're below zero in parts of the north bay. that's what the temperature would have to cool down for the air to become saturated. that's even drier than most deserts. here's the humidity forecast. even when the winds calm down at

11:00, it will be dry through the evening, overnight hours tomorrow. look at tomorrow evening, that's when the marine layer comes back and the fire threat will be over. we'll talk more about that coming up. reggie? >> actually, that is me. this is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights were turned on at about 5:38 this morning. you can see it's a pretty mild backup there on the 880 overcrossing, that's crowded. as mike mentioned, high wind advisory on all of the bridges with the exception of the richmond-san rafael bridge. that's probably windy there, too. the chp has not listed that as a high wind advisory. some of those higher trucks and vehicles are really having to hold on to stay on the road without swerving. we have a couple of problem spots. northbound 280, a car down an embankment, an am blens bulance route this morning. we'll check back on an accident

birchwood court late last night. contra costa county firefighters responded to similar calls in the last few hours reporting fallen trees or downed power lines. that's why we had the wind advisory in effect. there's nothing to do about that, you can get rid of the debris, but if the trees are going to go, they're going to go. you can see we have 25 to 43-mile-per-hour winds on sutro tower. for our planner today, most of us are in the 50s this morning. we'll be looking at how homogenized the air will be in the afternoon. 65 to 63 degrees. back down into the 60 to 65 degree range heading into the evening hours. with the breezes still blowing a bit, it will feel cooler than that. our fire index, we go from low, green, to very high in the extreme. i want to make sure you know that. you can see where everywhere. extreme in the santa cruz mountains, east bay hills,
