more for us in just a few moments. >> this is the fifth named storm to make landfall in louisiana this record year. rob marciano is there in new orleans with the latest. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, robin. just horrific winds coming into this city and as zetia came in with vengeance. blowing out the walls here. the winds ripping it off and nobody was inside during the storm thankfully as yet another hurricane wreaked havoc across the gulf coast. overnight, hurricane zeta tearing into the louisiana coast. >> oh, my god. the roof just blew off. >> reporter: the night sky illuminating from power flash after power flash. nearly 2 million without power across four states. authorities confirming one person tragically dying after being electrocuted. wind gusts reaching 112 miles per hour as zeta made landfall

in louisiana. we were right in it. the eyewall of hurricane zeta is ripping into this city right now. new orleans getting a direct hit from this category 2 storm. parts of louisiana completely under water. this large boat stranded in the middle of this highway. >> prepare for collision, man. >> reporter: and this barge breaking loose from its mooring. in biloxi, mississippi, one death reported there. cars bobbing in this garage from all the storm surge. the hard rock casino suffering major damage from the storm. you can see parts of the building completely gutted. >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: zeta ripping into the south leaving a trail of destruction. you can see roof after roof torn off. city officials hunkering down. one parish mayor issuing a curfew. the new orleans police department urging the public to shelter in place in time for landfall. >> this is not a drill. we do expect directly impacting the city of new orleans. there is confidence all around that aspect.

>> reporter: a direct hit indeed. the eye of hurricane zeta come right over canal street in the french quarter. the back half of this storm wasn't as bad as the front half. by the way, lake charles, evacuees from two months ago still in new orleans, hurricanes seemingly following them, now this hurricane bringing the damaging winds well north all of the way into the northeast. >> it was a fast mover. okay, rob, thank you. down the road we find ginger in mississippi with more on where the storm is headed next. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: robin, we have gusts of more than 100 miles per hour. that steeple right here at the church ripped off of the top of the building and this is just one piece of damage. along the mississippi coast. into louisiana, up to georgia, power outages all the way through north carolina. you can see it right there on the map mixing in with that

front. it's racing at nearly 40 miles per hour to the northeast. we'll continue to see those gusting winds. the tropical force winds all the way into southern virginia, the flood watches up there, too, and it's going to mix with enough cold air that by tomorrow morning you could see some snow on the back end of this, robin. >> so much happening. ginger, thank you. the latest on the race for the white house with five days left to vote, more than 75 million americans have already cast their ballots. that record number continues to climb as this year's campaign also shatters spending records. $14 billion spent overall, more than $6 billion for the presidential race alone. both trump and biden campaigning in tampa today. mary bruce is tracking it all. good morning, mary. >> reporter: george, good morning. just five days to go and a first for this campaign -- both president trump and joe biden campaigning in the same state at the same time. florida is critical. a must win for the president. it has the most electoral votes of any of the key swing states and today neither candidate is taking anything for granted.

locked in a tight race in florida, this morning, joe biden and president trump set to crisscross the critical state. >> i'm not counting on the polls. that's why i'm heading back to florida. >> we're winning big in florida. >> reporter: the president is projecting confidence but the polls show biden with a slight lead. today both candidates eyeing the critical i-4 corridor home to one in four florida voters. trump and biden set to have dueling rallies in tampa. as they try to court the state's seniors and latino voters. overnight in arizona the president touting his record. >> over the last four years i've been delivering for hispanic americans like never before. and hispanic american unemployment reached an all-time low prior to the pandemic. [ crowd chanting ] >> reporter: trump has been campaigning at a breakneck pace trying to make up lost ground in red states, holding packed rallies in areas where covid cases are spiking and still ignoring the science.

overnight, falsely claiming he's immune after his own covid diagnosis, celebrating with a fist bump. >> here's to immunity. to immunity, people. >> reporter: and he's making lofty promises. >> the safe vaccine is coming very quickly. you're going to have it momentarily. >> reporter: but experts warn a vaccine likely won't be authorized until january or later and in a newly released recording jared kushner bragging to journalist bob woodward that trump was, quote, getting the country back from the doctors, putting political strategy ahead of public health. >> but he's been saying that, don't fall into the same trap we fell into the first time. the states have to own the testing, but the president is also very smart politically with the way he did that fight with the governors to basically say, no, i own the opening because, again, the opening is going to be very popular. >> reporter: biden wednesday briefed by his coronavirus experts slamming the president's

handling of the pandemic. >> i'm not running on the false promise of being able to end this pandemic by flipping a switch but what i can promise you is this. we will start on day one doing the right things. we'll let science drive our decisions. we will deal honestly with the american people. and we'll never ever ever quit. >> reporter: and then he went off to vote. now, even with more than 75 million ballots already cast, both candidates are still scrambling to get out the vote. in the coming days, the president will be spending a lot of time in the midwest while joe biden is planning to hit three critical states that trump won in 2016, iowa, wisconsin and michigan, while his running mate, kamala harris, is heading to texas tomorrow hoping to turn that red state blue. michael. >> all putting in the final push, mary, thank you so much. and now to the battle for congress in the senate. the parties fighting for the majority, the democrats hoping to flip four seats to win back the senate. our senior national correspondent terry moran has a

just three months, making this is one of the most costly senate races in the country. and in north carolina, where senator thom tillis tested positive for coronavirus after attending the white house announcement of amy coney barrett's supreme court nomination, he's still trailing his democratic challenger cal cunningham even after he was caught in a sexting scandal. overnight in the supreme court, democrats scoring two victories there. three days after in pennsylvania, nine days in north carolina the republicans wanted to stop that. the justices said they didn't have enough time, but they could revisit those cases after the election. the bottom line is, if you want to vote by mail it may be too late. your best bet -- put it in a ballot box. just vote. >> i agree, just vote, terry. thank you so much. george will anchor our live coverage of election night with

our powerhouse political team at election headquarters in new york, d.c. and delaware on tuesday, november the 3rd, starting at 7:00 p.m. eastern. robin. okay, michael. we turn to that breaking news overseas. a deadly terror attack in france. ian pannell joins us now and has the latest. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, robin. this is a rapidly developing story. what we know so far is that at least three people have been killed and a number wounded in a terrorist stabbing attack in a church in the southern french city of nice. it happened at notre dame basilica, 9:00 local time and the suspect who is reportedly been injured is now in police custody. the authorities appear to have arrived rapidly on the scene storming the church as you'd expect. the area is now cordoned off with a heavy police presence there, armed police on the scene. president macron is also going to go down to nice and to try and assess what's going on. remember, this comes just under two weeks after that terrible beheading incident in paris, france, that this is another stark reminder of the threats

that exist in the city and a country that has a terrible history of this kind of incident. michael? >> thank you so much, ian. now we're going to turn to the latest on the coronavirus emergency. an hhs memo obtained by abc news shows 500,000 new cases in the u.s. between last wednesday and tuesday, a nearly 22% increase. our chief national correspondent matt gutman has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, the frenzy of the covid floor breeding unseen collateral damage. staff fatigue. >> they're tired. they're exhausted. >> reporter: in utah, 1 of 45 states where cases are increasing, this doctor says the caseload is becoming unsustainable. >> our biggest resource limitation is health care, care givers, and so it's the people that are taking care of the patients not the beds. >> reporter: yet, the parade of new patients is ceaseless. for icu nurse michelle marshall each patient's death feels personal. >> when i fail it's really,

really hard, you know, and i'm sure the doctors and everyone in the health community can relate to that, but it's just -- it doesn't get easy. >> reporter: the u.s. is now averaging about 70,000 cases a day. hospitalizations up in 38 states, including arkansas, where 14 lawmakers and the state's surgeon general have also been infected. as cases rise covid fatigue also appears to be hitting the northeast. 30 people apparently becoming infected in a wedding on long island, forcing hundreds into quarantine. that wedding venue now facing fines and with cases up 39% the past two weeks dr. anthony fauci warning that if guidelines aren't followed, the next few months could be worse. >> we have 225,000 deaths, the modeling tells us we're going to get 100 or more thousand as we get into the winter. that is just something that's unacceptable. >> reporter: despite the white house task force urging the use of masks, some businesses here in utah opting out of the recommendations. some people even calling it a hoax. what do you make of that? >> it's, quite frankly,

insulting to healthcare workers and to scientists and i haven't been spending the last seven, eight months of my life away from my family, away my kids because of a hoax. >> reporter: now the doctor is saying that masking up alone is not going to be enough to stop the onslaught of the virus. what they are very quietly calling for is renewed state lockdowns. you know, labs like this process 5,000 tests a day and they have had to hire new staff and covid cases ticking up so quickly that an association of hospitals here in utah actually reportedly sent the governor here a letter saying that they are planning to triage care basically giving the patients with the better chances of survival the best care if need be. george? >> the crisis is back. okay, matt, thanks very much. let's welcome back dr. ashish jha, dean of the brown university school of health. dr. jha, thanks for joining us again.

we have this powerful covid wave running smack into covid fatigue. what's your biggest concern right now? >> my biggest concern is that we're not ready for this wave that's coming in front of us and people are tired. i think there's a lot people can do to protect themselves. mask wearing, social distancing but eight months into the pandemic, george, this is not where we should be. >> it certainly is not. as we look to europe we've seen france announcing a new lockdown yesterday. germany announcing a new lockdown yesterday. the french president warning that the deaths are going to increase there. is what europe is going through now our future? >> yeah, they started rising about a month before we did, and they didn't take action seriously, and now they find themselves with no choice, and this is exactly what we want to avoid. before we go into thanksgiving and the holidays, we do not want to have to look into a lockdown, but that's where we're heading if we don't act urgently. >> so i guess that is the question right now. we heard matt say some of the

doctors on the scene are saying even wearing masks is not going to be enough, lockdown is inevitable. >> well, i don't know if it's inevitable, george. i think mask wearing is certainly a critical first step. we're not going to make any progress without that, so that has to happen. i do think we can peel back a little bit on some things. i think indoor dining, bars, those will get us into trouble and we have got to pull back. i do think we can get through this without a lockdown, but it's going to be tough. >> thanks for your insight. we are following a lot of other headlines including dodgers star justin turner under investigation now after he came back on the field to celebrate the world series win after being pulled for testing positive for covid. now let's go back to ginger in mississippi. yes, the chilly cities sponsored by mass mutual.

investigating dodgers star justin turner who joined the on-field celebration despite testing positive and being pulled from the game. kaylee hartung is at dodger stadium with more on this. good morning, kaylee. >> reporter: good morning, robin. justin turner grew up just 30 minutes from here. he dreamed of playing for his hometown dodgers and he'll have the pictures and the memories of that celebration he waited his whole life for forever, but now the question is, at what cost? >> there it is. >> reporter: the dodgers returning home to los angeles world series champions. but one player wasn't on board. third baseman justin turner now under investigation by major league baseball for risking the safety of others. turner was removed from the title-clinching game before the eighth inning after his covid-19 test came back positive. the commissioner's office says he violated coronavirus protocols when he then returned to the field for the team celebration. >> he wanted to come out and take a picture with the trophy

which, you know, can't state strongly enough how big of a role he's played in the success of this organization. i don't think there was anyone that was going to stop him. >> reporter: in a statement the league saying, while a desire to celebrate is understandable, turner's decision to leave isolation and enter the field was wrong and put everyone he came in contact with at risk. when mlb security raised the matter of being on the field with turner, he emphatically refused to comply. >> the only reason that the baseball season was able to finish is that the players and everyone around the teams did such a diligent job of following those protocols. it gives the game a bad look. >> reporter: that's turner celebrating with his teammates. at times with his mask off, kissing his wife and taking a team photo next to dodgers manager dave roberts, a cancer survivor. the major league baseball players association tells "gma" it's still gathering facts to determine events.

los angeles mayor eric garcetti pointing to this as a reminder that anyone can contract the virus. >> i think the guidance is clear that if we are positive we should stay away from people. >> reporter: justin turner says he hasn't experienced any symptoms and all of his teammates tested negative before they returned to l.a. this is an unprecedented situation, and until this investigation is complete, it's unclear if there will be any penalty for turner or the dodgers. guys? >> we'll see how the investigation plays out, kaylee, thank you. >> yes, we will. we're going to turn now to the covi surpassing the 9 million mark in cases. france responding to its highest daily death toll since april by announcing a new lockdown of the country. james longman joins us now from brussels, belgium, one of the world's worst hot spots. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, michael. belgium is one of the worst hit places on earth right now with 21% positivity rate.

there's a town about an hour from here at 41%. if the spread continues like this, 1 in 1,000 citizens here will be in the hospital with coronavirus in just two weeks and so countries across europe are clamping down with some pretty draconian measures. here in belgium, they're launching undercover health agents who will go into businesses to ensure restrictions are enforced. they'll have the same powers as police to offer fines up to a thousand dollars. in france, president macron announced a nationwide lockdown and said this wave is likely to be deadlier than the first and he has told his country that the virus is circulating in the population at a faster rate than even the most pessimistic models had predicted. schools and essential businesses remain open but citizens have been told, leave your home for any reason and you'll need to show documentation. this time, though, many are also fearing the economic and emotional consequences of further lockdowns. we've seen in naples, italy,

where massive protests have taken over. opposition mounting elsewhere too. it struck europe hard and just like the summer it may be a sign of things to come for the united states. george? >> sure looks like it. well, travel to europe may be hard, one airline says it's attempting to boost confidence. united announcing it will test all passengers on select flights from newark to london starting mid-november. our transportation correspondent gio benitez is at newark airport with the details, good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. you heard james talk about so much of europe shutting down again. united sees this as part of the solution. they're going to be using a rapid test. this is the machine right here, and they'll start using it just before the thanksgiving holiday when millions are expected to travel. this morning, a first look at new testing aimed at re-opening international travel. united airlines announcing it will test all passengers on some flights from newark to london starting in about two weeks. >> we can operationalize this type of testing to better support the need for travel and opening up these markets again. >> reporter: for the pilot

program, the airline will offer a free rapid covid test inside its united club. the test is the abbott i.d. now a molecular test that's widely used but not as sensitive as the lab run pcr test and may not pick up patients with a low amount of virus in their system. >> the abbott i.d. rapid test is great but it's not perfect. it can identify those individuals that may have high viral load but are asymptomatic but it also can lead to false negatives. >> reporter: the pilot program will launch just as cases in europe are on the rise. >> i think this type of travel program helps reassure people that we're not importing the virus or contributing to its spread. >> reporter: this on the heels of a harvard review that says the risk of covid-19 transmission aboard a plane is reduced to very low levels by onboard ventilation systems coupled with masks, cabin cleaning and distancing during boarding and deplaning but researchers are still looking at the potential risk in an

there is a surge of shoppers are looking to stock up. there is a surge in demand for those pantry items as they -- as winter and the holidays approach amid a pandemic. with much of the country seeing rising numbers of covid-19, many shoppers are bracing for another wave of the virus and snapping up certain products now. food manufacturers caught off guard by the crush of demand during the first wave upping production hoping to avoid potential shortages. general mills is adding 45 external production lines, to boost manufacturing. campbell soup is spending $40 million to up production of its goldfish crackers and chips. so experts say this time around, the shelves that are empty now might be a little different than the ones that were bare in the spring. according to one company that tracks online searches and e-commerce, right now demand for baking goods are up 3,400% from this time a year ago. searches for spices are up too. >> spices, feel good items, you know, slow cooker type of items, a lot of millenials perhaps

haven't done a lot of cooking before because they didn't have to. >> reporter: mike is saying he's seeing spikes in searches you can prepare early and keep ahead of the upcoming holidays so they don't have to go into crowded stores on the big day. >> whatever can be frozen and whatever is nonperishable you can safely keep until the holidays, we're seeing a lot of that. >> we noticed an uptick right now due to the panic buying that's occurring. >> reporter: stew leonard operates a chain of grocery stores in the northeast. >> huge spikes in tuna fish. pizza and pizza dough is a big thing, all the comfort foods. >> reporter: he says when it first hit many suppliers weren't ready for it. he says he's confident he is ready for the next months but is not taking chances, and he's already bulked up on stock just in case. >> we checked with all of our suppliers. they've assured us that all these shelves in here will be full. >> reporter: but one mistake he won't make again -- >> i have a new appreciation for toilet paper during -- we're not going to be caught flat-footed on this one again.

overnight hurricane zeta tearing into the louisiana coast. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: the night sky illuminating from power flash after power flash. nearly 2 million without power across four states. authorities confirming one person tragically dying after being electrocuted. wind gusts reaching 112 miles per hour as zeta made landfall in louisiana. we were right in it. the eye wall of hurricane zeta is ripping into this city right now. new orleans getting a direct hit from this category 2 storm. >> reporter: parts of louisiana completely under water. in biloxi, mississippi, one death reported there. cars bobbing in this garage from all the storm surge. zeta ripping into the south leaving a trail of destruction. you can see roof after roof torn off. city officials hunkering down, one parish mayor issuing a curfew. the new orleans police department earning the public to shelter in place in time for landfall.

we got landfall. we got a direct hit. the eye of the storm came directly over the french quarter. it went completely calm for a half an hour but by that time the damage was already done. this, the strongest hurricane to hit this late in the season, robin, in over 100 years as this record-breaking 2020 year continues. >> you know, rob, it's hard to believe just a week ago today you and i were in lake charles talking about all that they have gone through. that region is just getting hammered. thank you are, rob, for being there. >> it's been a tough year. >> back to ginger and biloxi, mississippi, with more on where it is headed. good morning again, ginger. >> good morning, robin. folks here want to tell you we fared well so far but not with this storm. this steeple behind me, a church right along the biloxi and gulfport line. we had gusts over 100 miles per hour that did damage like that but this storm is still doing damage. up in north carolina they've just had a gust of 82 miles per hour in cashiers, north carolina. you have some of those tropical

britney. what would you like to say to everyone who is wondering how she's doing now. >> i think that she's doing just like the rest of us. she's trying to make the best and stay positive during a very challenging time and challenging year and i think that that's kind of the theme of everyone right now so -- >> that's a good point and so much has changed for you since you took a break from hollywood. you are now the mom of two so how has it been staying at home with your two kids over the last eight months? >> well, honestly i have to say like the circumstances suck, you don't want any type of, you know, pandemic to ever happen but i will say the one thing that i've taken away from it, i was able to have this quality time with my family and with my children guilt-free, you know, i couldn't go anywhere. i couldn't work so you were home and you were fully there and i was fully in the moment with my children so i think that was the positive takeaway i tried to focus on, of course, not forgetting that, you know, this

is very serious and so many people were sick and trying to follow all the rules properly and, you know, but the main thing was really just having that time with my children without having a reason to feel guilty for doing anything else. >> yep, i can feel that. now it's hard to believe it's been 15 years since "zoey 101" premiered. wow, 15 years and now you updated that classic theme song "follow me" in "zoey 101" and it features the whole cast. how did you bring that together? >> well, it was very, very hard, especially during these times because shooting something with more than one person is very challenging during covid so me and the cast have a group message and so we -- i messaged everybody and we had one day to get it done so most everyone was able to make it. i think alexa and victoria were out of town or out of the country and paul was working but everyone else was able to be there and, you know, i told my manager this is the day, we got

to do it and made it happen and thankfully everybody worked together and got to have a mini reunion just for the "zoey" fans. >> fans have been asking for it for a long time. why was this the right time to bring the band back together? >> the fans have been wanting this reboot so, so much. and 2020 was the focus -- i was really focused on bringing that to them. with covid happening, it put everything on delay. production was the last thing from anyone's mind where you have more important things you're focusing on. during that time i figure what had is something that i can do productive during this time to give the fans something and my manager was like don't we give them the theme song. get it out before the end of the year and that way you don't end 2020 without giving fans what they want or a taste of what's to come so that's where the idea happened to get this to them. >> and you're also starring in a -- in the series "sweet magnolias," first time acts since you were a teen. how does it feel to be back in front of the camera?

incredible creations? how did you get started doing this? >> well, i'm a graphic designer turned food stylist and i just, you know, it's been such a crazy year as we know and i wanted to find a creative outlet to, you know, help me pass the days, so i -- what i did was took a photo of myself, i put it on the plate and then i made myself this mango dress and it was so satisfying that i thought, i really need to dress other people. so earlier this year i started a atlantic tok account and my first post went viral and then it just all took off from there. >> so what was that first post and what do you think the secret has been to seeing all of these creations be so popular on social media? >> well, you know, i think that food really brings people together. my first post was with a pomegranate dress and i just so

happy that people resonate with my food art and i think my hope is just, you know, if i could bring a little bit of joy to the people watching my videos during these crazy times, that would be just so wonderful to me. >> it's beautiful. i mean, it's mesmerizing to watch do you that and also making me hungry. you've heard from some celebrities and they love your creations so what is that like to hear from them? >> well, you know, i live in california and i just love watching the red carpet and celebrities in their big gowns, so it was so wonderful to hear from some of the celebrities and laura dern loved her chips and salsa dress and actually shared it on her instagram story and then celine dion messaged me to see if she could share my celine dijon dress on her tiktok account so that was super awesome. >> wow. >> ruby, we really appreciate you joining us this morning,

back here on "gma" on this thriver thursday. also thankful thursday and i'm thankful along with my production company to bring you the story of former long serving police officer and current brooklyn borough president eric adams who has dedicated his life to serving his community. his life changed when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but you know what, he turned it all around by embracing the power of food. >> one day i woke up and i couldn't see the alarm clock on my stand and realized that i was losing my sight and had a pain in my stomach that later turned out to be an user, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, but the real crisis i was facing that i was diagnosed with type 2

diabetes. i remember being at the doctor's office and told that i was in the late stages of diabetes and he shared with me, you know, you're going to be on medicine the rest of your life. you're going to lose some finger, possibly some toes because of the nerve damage and you're going to be injecting yourself with insulin and you'll lose your sight. it was very significant, an emotional time for me because, remember, i was still a public figure and it was through that comfort of embracing and leaning into the learning moment of that time that i was able to see myself through diabetes. i learned the power of food and what food does to your body and how there's a disconnect between what we eat and the chronic conditions we're living through. i learned how to use food, a plant-based diet to reverse my conditions and when i did so

three weeks later my vision came back. three months later my nerve damage went away, my diabetes went in remission. i couldn't even tell you when the user went away, it's just one day i said what happened to that pain in my stomach. i had medicine for one week and never had to take it again. it's been four years. we changed that impossibility into a possibility. >> yes, into possibility. joined by registered dietitian and nutritionist and good friend to "gma" maya feller. good to see you as always and, you know, a lot of people are -- they watch this piece and they think, okay, seems almost too good to be true. what do you say to them if they want to try something along these lines? >> so there's absolutely power at the tip of your fork and your nutrition choices can really have a positive impact on all of your health outcomes. the first thing that i would say to people is think about how you can add more plants into your day-to-day. you have to make it your own,

right? you've got to follow your own cultural food pathways and one way that i like to do it, i've always been a lover of the breakfast salad in the morning, yes, i'll have a salad just like this and put a little egg in there, customize, make it your own and i get plants in the top of my day. >> looks delicious as well. a lot of people will say, but i'm going to get hungry if i don't have the right protein, if i don't have the meat. how can you substitute vegetables for protein and still feel full and satisfied? >> yeah, so beans are a fantastic source of plant-based protein but they're also an inincredible source of soluble fiber and what it does, it helps to keep you fuller longer and delays the stomach emptying and you don't get such big blood sugar spikes so what i really say to people who are looking for plant proteins is add beans into your diet. have them at least once a day. it helps with hunger and satiety.

>> and get that fiber in there. okay. >> that's right. get that fiber in. >> and something, people, it goes beyond salt and pepper. so many different ways they can use spices to help new this regard. >> yes, yes, and you know especially with diabetes, the added salt and added sugars can really wreak havoc. i saline into the alternative spices. you see this huge bowl here, it's onion, garlic, ginger, all sitting right next to my stove and when i start any dish i add it in. in addition, i use fresh herbs and these fresh herbs just bring up the flavor and give life to any wonderful thing that i am making? >> it's wonderful for people to know the power of food that you can really change so many things about your aspects of your life simply by your diet. >> that's absolutely right. i mean the choice is theirs. they can make intentional choices around nutrition and it can change the trajectory of
