race for the white house. four days until the final vote, focusing on the battle ground states. both trump and biden going to three states each and tomorrow biden and president obama will campaign for the first time. mary bruce starts us off. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. we have officially entered the last-minute scramble. both candidates are cramming in as many events as possible and colliding in critical battleground states and they're eyeing the same turf. both holding events in minnesota and wisconsin. >> if florida goes blue, it's over. >> we are going to win florida. we are going to win four more years in the white house. >> reporter: the candidates thursday with dueling florida rallies. the state is a must win for the president. he's held five rallies there this month, more than any other state. but with just four days to go polls show joe biden with a slight edge over donald trump in his adopted home state. trump trying to sell his record, even as the state's economy is taking a hit from the pandemic. >> under my leadership, the florida tourism industry and hospitality industry will come roaring back very soon. it's ready to happen. we're making the turn.

>> reporter: he's touting a new report showing the economy grew at a record 33% annual pace during the third quarter. but economists say it's not enough to make up for the massive losses during the first half of the year. many americans still feeling the pain. over 750,000 filed new unemployment claims just last week. even with covid cases spiking in the u.s. hitting a new dire record, more than 88,000 new cases in a single day, trump is still insisting it's not a big deal using his own recovery as an example. >> you're going to get better. if i can get better, anybody can get better and i got better fast. >> reporter: but biden is accusing the president of giving up on the pandemic. >> 16,000 people in florida have been lost and millions of people are out of work, on the edge. they can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. >> reporter: promising he can tackle the virus and bring the country back. >> i'm not going to shut down the country, but i'm going to shut down the virus.

president trump's superspreader events and he's spreading more virus around the country and here in florida today. >> reporter: the candidates' spouses are also on the road, jill biden in michigan thursday and for the first time this year first lady melania trump joining her husband on the trail. >> hello, florida. it is wonderful to be here in our home state. >> reporter: now joe biden tomorrow is teaming up with his not so secret weapon, former president obama. the two of them holding their first joint in person rally. the president's final sprint includes three stops in pennsylvania tomorrow. then an all out blitz. he's planning a dozen events. >> we've seen nose 82 million americans have already voted absentee ballots and early vote. for those still holding an absentee ballot, it's getting pretty late. >> reporter: we're now in crunch time. across the country more than 90 million absentee ballots were requested. so far about 56 million have been returned. if you're still holding on to

that in many states it may be too late to mail them. you will want to find a drop-in location or vote in person. either way, george, it's time to get out and vote. >> mary bruce, thanks very much. cecelia? more than 82 million people have already cast their ballots so far smashing the record for early voting but millions of votes are still at stake and in these final days both campaigns are making a play for key groups that could shift the election. our chief national affairs correspondent tom llamas is joining us with more now, a record number of latinos eligible to vote this year. >> reporter: that's right, cecilia. we spoke to political experts across several battleground states and told us for joe biden to win he has to pick off some swing voters that went with president trump four years ago, but also grow those coalitions that always help democrats win. this morning, as many polls tighten across the country, the battle for the white house will come down to who can turn out key voting blocs. in florida, the biggest battleground state hispanics

make up more than 2 million registered voters. nearly 20% of the electorate in that state. the president and joe biden there to make their closing arguments. >> we're going on to win a record share of the hispanic-american vote. >> the latino community is the most diverse in the country. the better the community does the better the country does. >> reporter: new polling suggesting hispanic voters could break for either candidate. one poll has biden up 50% to 34%. another released that same day shows the president on top, 52 to 46%. another key voting group that could determine this election, women. >> suburban women, will you please like me? >> reporter: in 2016 the majority of women voted democrat. but according to pew research, the president narrowly won with white women. now some polling suggesting he could have trouble doing that again. this new national poll shows biden taking the lead and nationally the gender gap is

wide. in fact, some experts say, quote, this election has the potential for the largest gender gap since women were given the right to vote. that gap on full display in households across america. like the daroccos in massachusetts. they've got his and hers campaign signs in the yard and while they disagree about politics -- >> i go upstairs. i say, i can't -- i really can't. >> it's a compromise. >> reporter: they're on the same page about the priorities. >> what's more important than politics is our relationship. >> a scene playing out in households around the country. tom, we've been talking about this. both making a big push for the latino vote in the final days and interesting thing we're seeing, they're not just focused on the states where there are big latino populations but looking at pennsylvania where they think the latino vote could make or break the campaign for either candidate. >> reporter: cecelia, that's right. we know the traditional states like texas, nevada, arizona and

are all going in the wrong direction and much concern right now is that there seems to be no peak in sight. this morning an unsettling new record for the united states, 88,500 new coronavirus cases in one day. the highest since the beginning of the pandemic. ohio governor dewine says there's no place to hide from the virus as cases surpass 3,000 for the first time. >> the virus is raging throughout the state of ohio. >> reporter: in wisconsin, the latest numbers grim. nearly 5,000 new cases reported thursday. the positivity rate here, a jaw-dropping 36.9%. hospitals in the state on track to run out of icu beds in as little as two weeks. one in five reporting a critical staffing shortage. >> i couldn't breathe. i couldn't breathe without the oxygen. low 60s or 70s and had to have the machine on constantly.

>> reporter: carmen battled covid-19 in july, suffering through 45 days on a ventilator, both of her lungs failing. a turn for the better. nine days ago the 52-year-old received a double lung transplant saving her life. >> it's about being responsible, being educated and understanding the power of this virus. >> reporter: in all right now, 25 states setting new records for cases in the last two weeks. so concerning el paso county in texas enacting immediately a two-week shutdown of nonessential businesses. texas attorney general ken paxton tweeting that the judge has no authority to shut down businesses adding, my office is quickly exploring all legal actions. >> when you've got the flu season coming at you, you've got, you know, festivities coming up like halloween and thanksgiving, this is a perfect storm. >> reporter: and with halloween coming up this weekend, real fear the number of people infected across the country could surge even more if changes

aren't made. grappling with one of the largest outbreaks in the country the indoor event in south dakota is expected to go on without masks in attendance. the mayor vowing zero tolerances for violations this halloween. >> trick-or-treat outdoor, small groups, masks on, great. big parties, gatherings, that's not great. if we find out about them, we'll have to break them up. >> reporter: and to give you an idea of how serious the situation is here in wisconsin, hospitalizations rate this week jumped 16% compared to last week. george? >> okay, alex, thanks very much. let's bring in the mayor of milwaukee, tom barrett. mayor barrett, thank you for joining us. the statewide numbers are staggering. 36.9% positivity rate. what are you facing in milwaukee right now? >> well, we've seen a sharp increase in our numbers here in the city of milwaukee. we've had things under control but in the last five, six weeks we've seen about a fivefold increase in the number of cases.

we have enough hospital beds now but the alternative care facility we enacted earlier this year. that is starting to receive patients from around the state. but the hospital bed issue and i would say the worker issue is a real issue. there's a lot of fatigue with the health care workers who have been working around the clock to take care of these patients. >> what went wrong the last five, six weeks? >> i think we've got a terribly poisonous political atmosphere here. the governor has done a really noteworthy job in trying to enact restrictions. the republican leadership in the legislature and the republican supreme court have thwarted him time and time again. just yesterday the governor asked the supreme court to take up the case that challenges his ability to put restrictions on restaurants and other places. right now it's a house divided in wisconsin. that's very unfortunate. >> you're putting restrictions in milwaukee on large gatherings, on indoor dining. is it time to ban indoor designing like they have in chicago? >> we are not taking anything

off the table. again, we've seen increases in the last several weeks here. we want to make sure we're helping the workers in those restaurants. i am concerned. i look at these numbers on a daily basis, sometimes three or four types a day to see what we could be doing. nothing is off the table right now because the numbers are growing at an unabated level and it's not acceptable. >> what does this all mean for election day? >> well, we've seen probably half of our voters already vote. that's a good thing and put in a lot of safeguards for our voters. we've got 15 early voting sites or 14 sites so people can vote in a safe way. we've got 170 locations. we had only five in the springtime because we had lost so many workers but we've put millions of dollars into giving people different alternatives to vote. so we think that's going to be very, very safe, unlike april where it wasn't safe. it's going to be safe on november 3rd and up to november 3rd. >> anything more you need from the federal government right now? >> well, we absolutely need them

to continue funding because neither we nor other communities in this state or this nation will be able to do the testing or tracing after the c.a.r.e.s. act money runs out this. this is not something that we can afford. even the states can't afford it. congress has to come back and has to allocate money for us for testing, has to allocate money for tracing because we've got thousands of tests that are occurring every single day and you saw what the positivity numbers are. it's in the 30s in this state. we have to make sure people know when they're sick so they can stay away from other people. it's imperative that congress acts. >> you all are ground zero right now. mayor, thanks for joining us this morning. michael? we turn to the destruction that's left in the wake of deadly hurricane zeta. over 1 million still without power and ginger has the latest. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the remnants of zeta out in the ocean but, boy, did it do damage and killed at least six people and the video that you're seeing

here is from atlanta, georgia, a few of those deaths came from georgia. it was just racing through the southeast and the mid-atlantic. in north carolina, western north carolina, you had flooding rains so it wasn't just wind. but, boy, when it got all the way up to new york city the wind did gust up to 40 miles per hour and that's where we saw that crane. now it's supposed to do that. they let it go with the wind so it doesn't hurt anything but it did start to take down a couple of things. so that's called weather vaning but do we have our own deal, the rain left over with the other system and the snow on the back side. this is going to be interesting as we get into pre-halloween here. snow could reach all the way down to just north of new york city and if it's really bursting around 9:00, 9:30 this morning we could see a little snowflake mix in. it will move out. by this afternoon it clears out. tomorrow, clear and very cold. one of the scariest maps i've seen in a long time feeling subfreezing.

her dead is now suing taylor's boyfriend, kenneth walker, claiming he suffered severe trauma and emotional distress. steve osunsami has the latest. good morning to you, steve. >> reporter: good morning, to you, michael. just putting this into a little context, this lawsuit is coming from one of the officers in this case who many feel should have been charged with murder, but us not. for the victim who was killed and her many supporters, this is entirely upsetting. he is the face of law enforcement in this divisive case out of kentucky. when they say her name breonna taylor who even the police now agree should never have been killed in her home, jonathan mattingly was the officer leading the charge outside her door. this morning the 47-year-old is suing the victim's boyfriend who fired shots through the door thinking that the police were thieves. the police officer who was seriously wounded is now suing taylor's boyfriend, kenneth walker, accusing him of battery, assault and intentional emotional distress. it was in the middle of the night on march 13th and the officers say they loudly

announced themselves before trying to break into the apartment with a no-knock warrant but walker who is a legal gun owner told investigators that he and taylor asked who was at the door several times and heard no answer. and that he only fired a shot when he saw the door break open. in this countersuit mattingly says that he nearly died and needed five hours of surgery and that walker acted recklessly in firing his pistol in the direction of the police officers who were serving a search warrant and that his conduct was outrageous, intolerable, and offends all accepted standards of decency and morality. >> you were called racist. are you racist? >> no, not at all. but i mean i was a victim in this as well. my family has been a victim in this. they have had to go in hiding and have had death threats. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview with abc news and the "louisville courier-journal" last week he says he believes walker deserves some of the

blame for his girlfriend's death. >> the impossible situation that kenneth walker put her in in that hallway with this narrow hallway, shooting from it, him diving out, i'm assuming she was trying to follow him in the room. i don't know that for sure, but that's what makes sense. he put her in an impossible situation. >> do you feel kenneth walker is responsible for her death? >> i think there's a few people responsible. i think he is. >> reporter: walker filed his lawsuit against police in september, criminal charges against him were dropped with prejudice which means he could still be charged again. >> the charges brought against me were meant to silence me and cover up breonna's murder. for her and those i love, i can no longer remain silent. >> reporter: walker's attorneys say they're shocked and this is the latest in a cycle of police aggression, deflection of responsibility and obstruction of the facts. the counterclaim just bringing it full circle. if kenny can be sued for defending himself, make no mistake, all lawful gun owners' rights are at risk and that should scare everyone.

♪ welcome back to "gma." halloween eve here and this year it's all about the kids. our celebration with them coming up. >> now we're going to go to our "gma" cover story. as we get ready to turn our clocks back, erielle reshef joins us with why there's a push to end the time change and how it impacts our health. good morning, erielle. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, michael. i think all of us could use a little extra sleep about -- right about now, but some sleep experts say given the challenges of the pandemic, it's time to scrap that time change altogether. it's almost time again to turn back the clocks. but the end of daylyle saving time made more complicated this year with many parents working from home. >> can you come make me lunch? >> reporter: millions of kids virtual learning? >> in the amp and early evening, just to have that extra light is

really important for everybody. >> reporter: the singer family of new york says the time change is one more major disruption. >> my daughter is affected because she goes to school in the dark and she comes home in the dark just like a lot of people are going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark. >> reporter: the american academy of sleep medicine says shifting to and from daylight saving time has been associated with sleep disruption, mood disturbances and even increased risk of fatal crashes. this at a time when sleep issues, anxiety and depression are already on the rise during the pandemic. now the academy recommending scrapping the seasonal time change altogether. >> standard time is actually most in sync with our internal circumstance kadian rhythms. why it's so important, lights give us cues and tell our body when to do certain things. >> reporter: some states like arizona and hawaii have kept the clocks the same year round. citing the benefits of

consistency and as the pandemic persists florida senators marco rubio and rick scott proposing a bill to do the same nationwide through november 2021. the singers say in the meantime, they plan to make the best of it trying to see the daylight at the end of the tunnel. >> i just try to keep it status quo and as long as parents don't make an issue about it, the kids won't feel it as much. >> reporter: and experts say try to ease yourself and your kids into this time change so over the next couple of nights move bedtime by about 15 minutes later, you should be in better shape by sunday. >> all right, thank you so much for that. dr. jen ashton joining us now and, doc, i look at it on the surface, i'm excited about the extra hour of sleep. sounds great but there can be real health consequences to this hour change. >> yeah, there can, michael. by the way, which was a resident and intern i wasn't too excited about having to work ang extra hour so it goes both ways, but

there have been studies. there are reports in the medical literature. recent study by the nih found 150,000 americans have negative consequences to daylight saving time, anything from heart attack, stroke, accidents, change in their mood, remember, this is an association. it's all about that crossover between biology and social life and how it affects our circadian rhythms. >> how can people prepare themselves for the time change when it does come? >> well, i think like erielle said, you know, you do it gradually. ideally maybe the next time you start a month in advance, not just a couple of days, but then there are other things like getting more exposure to morning light which is really, really important. eating lightly, you know, heavy meals at any time of the day can kind of make those circumstance kadian rhythms more unbalanced. minimizing our use of screen

won't quit -- that is how hospital staff at the upmc children's hospital of pittsburgh describes 13-year-old kyree beachem. >> kyree. look at you. how are you doing? >> reporter: kyree is one of the most incredible little girls i've ever met. she is the patient that even if the nurses aren't assigned to her, they will go and visit with her because they love her so much. >> reporter: and to kyree the hospital is like family. >> i like the people there. i've pretty much known them since i was a baby. >> reporter: kyree was born with a rare intestinal disease and spent much of her life in and out of the hospital. >> one of the main problems for kyree was whenever she would try to eat or want to eat she would have significant abdominal pain, significant belly pain. >> yeah, i was pretty sick. i couldn't do a lot of stuff. i couldn't eat. i couldn't drink. i couldn't ride a bike. i couldn't do the stuff that normal kids did. >> reporter: because of the difficulty eating she'd get most

of her nutrition through an iv. hidden away in that flowery pink backpack. she'd be hooked up for 22 hours a day. still, her body was shutting down. >> every trip back and forth to the hospital was scary, because we knew that we were losing her. ♪ i need a miracle >> reporter: in 2015, she received a life-saving four-organ transplant, a new liver, pancreas and small and large intestines. >> if she hadn't have gotten the transplant she wouldn't be here at 13 years old smiling and still giving a lot of sass. ♪ i feel like superman >> reporter: but her battle continues, and she's still requires occasionally hospitalization but often does it in style. determined to put smiles on the faces of staff and patients. >> if people are crying or sad or they're not feeling good, i try to smile to make them feel

♪ i put a spell on you i'm loving the halloween music this morning. welcome back. time for bitemare on elm street. getting you ready for halloween with some seriously spooky treats. joe salz and the director and editorial director of "delish" and "house beautiful". they're showing us how to make treats. welcome, guys. we'll dive right in. >> hi. hi, guys. how are you doing? >> good to see you. the kids, i can see, are all dressed up as s'mores. i love the costumes. >> yep. >> as they dig into some sweets there. >> we got the s'mores going on. say hi. >> i love it. you guys look great. >> i'm dressed as a campfire, if you don't get it. you guys are having a party today. we're excited to be here. >> you'll show us how to make jack-o'-lantern bowls. tell us how you get them into the perfectly round shape for a party. >> this is super, super fun. so actually what we're starting with is balloons and we washed them with a little water and dish soap then we'll take them and dip them into melted white

chocolate. we have some white chocolate here and what we'll do is put a little bit of orange food coloring into the white chocolate. and it melted very, very slowly. it's important to melt it slowly. >> why is it important to melt the chocolate slowly? >> well, honestly, white chocolate burns super easily, so you only want to do it 15-second intervals at most, then check it and make sure it's getting nice and melted so anything more than that you're going to burn it. so you want to take your balloon. this is the best part, super satisfying. you'll dip the balloon in the white chocolate and make sure it goes up the sides. then look at that -- you get this amazing bowl shape then you just take it with the white chocolate and put it in the freezer. it just needs to harden for an hour and becomes this super, super fun bowl shape. let me show you how cute this is. we end up with this hardened white chocolate on the outside with the balloon still in the

center. then what we have here is we have melted chocolate in a piping bag and then what we're going to do is just pipe the melted chocolate right onto the face and make this adorable little jack-o'-lantern face. what i love about this is all the kids get involved and they're having so much fun with it. what i also love is taking some eyeballs and sticking them right on. you just have fun with this and do a lot of cool and interesting things. and wait until you see my favorite part, which is when you have the hardened face you put it -- isn't it so cute. >> they're so perfect. >> it just takes ten minutes after you made the face. and then best part is you pop the balloon and this is the part that my kids love. >> the kids love it. we love it. unfortunately we got to go. happy halloween to you guys.
