behind the line of scrimmage. defensive tackle, combining with brooks on the stop. third down. clock moving, take a time-out. not letting the buckeyes shoot on the clock. kirk, it's halloween night here. we're in the state of pennsylvania, which brings back wonderful memories for our entire crew, exempt for you, when we were in philadelphia. notre dame. come on back in here, kirk. some friends of mine. eastern state penitentiary. that's a female goblin there. she came in hot. >> kirk: came in hot. i can't believe, that thing,
8:03 pm
every year. they play that back. >> chris: they will, naturally. come on, people need a chance to chuckle here. >> kirk: i know, that's fine. it's all good. >> chris: we got denied the whiteout. >> kirk: i did like a left kick. >> chris: we had to play the sound, fully understand for the squeal. third and 9. sermon in the game. hammered off the edge came brandon smith. and justin fields slow to get up. >> kirk: this sophomore with a bright future. known for his ability to blitz. they bring pressure out here and they're able to get home. they just overload that side, brought one more than the offensive line could handle and justin fields for the first time, really, all night gets hit and hit hard on third down. >> chris: not only does it end the possession but knocks it
8:04 pm
back out of field goal range. would be a 57-yarder and then try that again. has not kicked since early on. got to dominic dimaccio, the back-up walk on kicker but now drew crispin in the game to punt. that's an important sack there to keep hope alive for the penn state team. >> kirk: i just continue to be impressed with penn state's fight. they've been down the whole game, still down 13 in the fourth quarter. brent dials up the blitz on third down. this defense, even though they've given up big plays and given up a lot of points to the offense, still playing with some energy here. like brent prime. his consistency. he was a ga. a little bit about the game. coached in a lot of different places, been here a long time. he still talks about how much he said, a bud foster guy at heart. still goes back to any time a
8:05 pm
defensive coordinator says i'm a bud foster guy at heart, talks about their aggressiveness as a defensive coordinator and attacking an offense. >> chris: i'm a bud foster fan, always was. wish him the best in retirement. force to go a long way to cut into a 13 point lead. usually very good at executing this kind of punt. kicks it high with back spin. races down there. and yet, let it get away. just brag on how good they execute. they tried at the one, got away from them as a touchback. >> kirk: thought, i got this handled. and he's about to get the ball and it bounces off his knee. >> chris: robinson, he was like, this is my call.
8:06 pm
i'm right here. let me put it down at the one. crispin says, i get a chance to punt. this offense so good, they don't call on me very often. you could see the back spin on that. the ball is going to bounce back. 18 yard, 19 yard difference because penn state at the 20 to begin this drive. again, out to austin city as the pac-12 under way in the cardinal looking for a bounceback here. shuk, the new ducks quarterback, looking at him. 4:30 on the west coast. penn state, 3:49 to work with. and clifford, flushed and chased, trying to make something happen. flips it late. and it's intercepted. kicked off by hooker. ho hook's got blockers and knocked down inside the 10 and that should about do it. first turnover of the night. clifford tried to press on the run and went right to hooker.
8:07 pm
>> kirk: he tried to get it to freiermuth, hooker who's had a big night tonight makes the play, comes up with the interception to seal the victory for ohio state. but clifford who's just feeling some, you know, late in the game, i've got to make a play. steps up and then starts to look for his guy, freiermuth and it's just a reckless decision to throw that football, even though he trusts freiermuth to be able to make a play, that's a throw and hope kind of play which he cannot do, especially after he talked about the mistakes last week in bloomington with the two interceptions. >> chris: they tried all night to get the ball to freiermuth. he's been well covered. targeted six times, three catches for 46. and fields and the buckeye offense. chance to add to this league. teague hammers forward. clifford said he was devastated by getting knocked out of the game last year in the loss back in his home state. well under 100% mobility-wise
8:08 pm
when he came in, very frustrating. hoped for a big redemption performance tonight. got off to a very slow start. two completions in the first half, pretty good second half until that right there. >> kirk: in his defense, you're down 13. clock is running down, under 4 minutes. you're trying to make something happen and he just took a chance. i wouldn't throw that underneath the category, talked about it being a reckless decision. it was, but i think it's because the point in the game that we are where he felt he tried to just try to make a play. >> chris: brooks, knocking down teague and penn state going to drop to 0-2. great expectations into the season. talking about penn state being a potential playoff contender. run the table. all the goals live. a test to the culture and test
8:09 pm
of will and spirit to this group. >> kirk: been a long time since you said 0-2. i know it's unusual. unusual circumstances but ten years. >> chris: so fields, you know that without trevor lawrence, the positive covid test, he cannot play next week in that showdown game in south bend because he's got to have the cardiac protocol. go through various tests to make sure your heart is okay when you come through the covid process, so saying he will not play. you knew the door would you describe open for fields based on last week to go have another performance like this and perhaps become front-runner for the heisman. >> kirk: he was on the back burner because of everybody else but exploded on the scene in the
8:10 pm
first few weeks, doing everything expected of him and maybe more and i think ohio state is a team. often the heisman trophy is really about the team. i think ohio state sent a message to the country after the week against nebraska, week two, i think they looked different tonight. they just had a different intensity about them and i think they took a very good step in the right direction. >> chris: the quarterbacks of all three top teams, average teams that are expected to go undefeated. certainly, contenders and so would lawrence be if he could get back on the field. but missing a couple of games in a short season will not help his cause. and teague plowing forward. again, players in different conferences have the different covid protocols to go by in the big 10, that's 21 day when you take for a positive test. it's a different situation in the acc where lawrence plays but have to go through the battery of heart test which is obviously the proper thing to do medically. even though you come through, have negative tests and have no symptoms.
8:11 pm
they have to check it out and there's just not quite enough time for it to happen and lawrence to get ready for the game, so they have to be without him in south bend and certainly hope he returns and finish out the season without further issues. >> kirk: goes to south bend next week after getting at least a start under his belt today against an upstart boston college team. boy, jeff, former ohio state defensive coordinator now head coach of bc doing a great job of getting his team ready to play. i thought that had as much to do with bc in the way they played as much as trevor lawrence not being in the lineup. bc came with intentions today and played great. >> chris: it was bc for the ohio state team, took on clemson in the semifinal a year ago. that's a very positive sign for bc. it's a moral victory, i hate to use that phrase but it gets mighty clemson, eagles showing a strong pulse. >> kirk: think about where they've been in recent years and just watching them with jeff.
8:12 pm
we talk about culture and changing and attitude and the belief. all you have to do is turn boston college on and watch them play right now and it just feels different, you know, when you see them. >> chris: what's your take now on clemson? college gameday going to be there. on the road with the fighting irish. >> kirk: i think getting him some reps today was pivotal. i think the game and the speed of the game, you would think on the road of south bend, it will go up and the intensity will go up and i think clemson, the last two weeks, maybe a bit of a wake-up call, cannot wait to talk about the game and notre dame in the running game and enough balance to be able to attack the tigers defense. tyler davis, they didn't play too on the offense. >> chris: dimaccio, a pretty
8:13 pm
good night. left early, this one slides just outside the upright and so a couple of, not a perfect performance but halloween in happy valley, looks pretty frightening for the rest of this conference. 526 total yards, again, just like the opening win against nebraska, pretty good balance. 2:08 on the ground. 3:18 through the air, four more touchdown passes. olave catching a pair of them. rutgers, tight end has a couple. garrett wilson, 11 catches tonight. 111 yards. clifford has to throw this one deep into the bench. togiai applying pressure. impressive on both offensive and defensive lines. they've owned the trenches, wouldn't you say? >> kirk: that's been the
8:14 pm
difference in the game from the outset what they were able to do. i think the officials were talking about the potential there of that being intentional grounding. >> chris: my friend, we hope for nothing more than the return to normalcy in 2021. that covid-19 could be gone. for many people and many reasons, reconvene here, the season of 2021. it could be back to whiteout. >> kirk: something was missing tonight. 110,0 110,000. >> chris: absolutely. >> kirk: ohio state defensive line, been a question on how good they could be. four sacks tonight. when they didn't get sacks, they did a good job of pressuring. i think they took a big step as a group, rotating a lot of different bodies. not just physical at the point of attack with the run but when they've had to try to come after clifford. they haven't always had the
8:15 pm
blitz, which is what they want to see. they want to see the front four get in there. >> chris: in defeat, jahan dotson been for penn state. 7 for 133 and three touchdowns tonight for the future receiver in this score. >> kirk: he'll continue to be featured in this offense as the offense grows with first year offensive coordinator. it's nice to see what he's able to do. more of a guy that came in the spot, handler now, move him outside to the x and like you say tonight, he's going to have nights like this, and more opportunities like this. >> chris: clifford will be slammed down. jonathon cooper, generational talent like chase young, of course, has moved on to the nfl. these guys, a lot less heralded but looking very hungry tonight.
8:16 pm
flag down as clifford scrambles and he will go down, getting chase. >> kirk: ohio state, they tried to run on the player. 12th man for the field for the buckeyes. >> chris: rutgers, maryland, indiana, illinois, michigan state, and michigan. those are the opponents in the remaining regular season games for ohio state. >> kir anything can happen. no foregone conclusions. almost saw shocker today. clemson, but ohio state shows up and plays their game. >> kirk: which, again, heavily favored in every game they play. the only thing you would think when you miss those opponents would be, they get ahead of themselves, do they almost start to hear how good they are and show up flat one game. i just don't, the personality of this team and the coaching they have, i mean, it's possible but i would be shocked if that
8:17 pm
happened. >> chris: the last trip to maryland, remember, they fell behind. they had to rally. they won in overtime. that missed 2 point conversion pass by maryland, the checks to win it there. they barely survive that as a big favorite. >> kirk: you could go back to 15. maybe urban meyer's best team they ever had, the quarterback at michigan state and who would have thought connor cook was out and come into columbus. elliott and the team they had, ended upbeati beating ohio stat. things happened but i don't see this team losing. really good. >> chris: that will be the final play of this game. as ohio state, with an electric start, yards in the opening play. down to a 14-0 lead. penn state battled hard, scored 19 points in the second half but it's the buckeyes by 13 and a tenth consecutive win on the road against ranked teams equaling the all-time college
8:18 pm
football record of the frank leyhe led notre dame teams of the 1940s. ten straight wins over road teams and justin fields, well, he had the six incompletions tonight. that's it. four more touchdown passes. impressive from start to finish by ohio state. 38-25 is the final. bill burnell produced this telecast. thanks to our entire crew here. mark, mike black, darren brown. for maria taylor and kirk herbstreit, i'm chris fowler. we'll see you at stanford/oregon next saturday, except for the west coast, stay tuned for your local news. good night. happy valley.
