abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has a look at how some are casting balance lotses where the warriors once called home. >> my son got me up this morning and said it's time to vote and i said oh my goodness, well, let's go. >> reporter: rosa vaughn made a trip to the oakland arena saturday to vote. the former home of the warriors has been transformed into a voting. >> we the people have the voice and if we have the voice, we need to speak. >> reporter: alameda county registrar of voters says you can still vote here if you don't feel comfortable going inside. >> we want our voters to know they have curbside voting, we can bring their ballot out to them and they can vote in their car in this parking lot or they can drive through if they have their ballot already that we mailed to them. >> reporter: josie mooney just voted in her halloween costume. >> i lost my absentee ballot, i think i threw it out with a bunch of newspapers. i've never not voted so i wanted

to come early. >> reporter: cars were lined up dropping off ballots at the alameda county courthouse. 20-year-old kitani franklin is voting for the first time. >> it's my civic duty, excited to participate for the first time. >> reporter: early voting is outdoors on the courthouse steps, a record number of people already voted. >> we are at about 520,000 votes as of this morning received so far, which is 54% of our registered voters. >> here in marin county, 19 locations open for in-person voting. 60% of the county has already voted by mail. volunteers are helping out at this voting center, at the novato library. >> feels like this year is the most important time i've ever voted and i've voted in every election since i was eligible. >> reporter: the bay area making sure their vote and voice is heard. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> in san francisco, a ballot -- >> trying to make it as easy as

possible to exercise your vote and it's important for everybody to have that right and to have easy access. >> that was warriors head coach steve kerr, he was there at the chase center to greet fans casting their ballots. there is a drop-off location there, and that drop-off location will be open through election day. a warriors facility in oakland and the arena of the santa cruz warriors are also being used as polling sites and drop-off locations. in the south bay, nearly 100 voting stations opened in santa clara county. abc 7 news stopped by one at levi's stadium in santa clara. the stadium was chosing as a way to make it exciting and easy to fans to vote. centers will be open 9:00 to 5:00 until election day when hours will expand from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the north bay marin transit are offering freo encourage voter turnout and

fares waived for riders. this will cost the agency about $25,000 based on current ridership levels, 60% of normal because of the pandemic. it will consider offering similar promotions for future elections. and we'd like to know how voting is going for you. you can share your experience voting by mail, dropping off your ballot or voting in person at abc7news.com/election. we've also, we're also interested in knowing if you have any concerns this year about the process of voting. let's get to the pandemic now. covid-19 cases are on an upswing. in california and in more than 40 other states across the country, the u.s. has set a new global record for the number of cases reported in a single day. nearly 99,000 cases were reported friday, surpassing a previous record set by india in september. california reported more than 5,000 new cases and that is well above the state's daily average

of nearly 4,200. experts say this is only the start of this wave of infections. i know after months of rushing to get homeless people in san francisco off the streets and into hotels because of the pandemic, they will start to be moved out. starting tomorrow, more than 500 homeless people are going to be relocated but there's no clear plan on where they're going to go. case managers will work with individuals to figure out their best option. this first phase of relocation is set to finish by the year's end. an estimated 2,400 homeless people are currently housed in hotels throughout the city. in the east bay, parents are planning a rally today to reopen contra costa public schools. it will take place outside the county's office of education in pleasant hill. the rally is an extension of the reopen california schools movement started as a facebook group and grown to 10,000 members. the group is calling on contra costa county to resume in-person classes. they say distance learning isn't working and schools have had

threw a big outdoor party for locals who saved them from closure. they raised $65,000 from community members to cover vital expenses during the closure, back open for business with capacity limited to 25% and as a gesture to thank the community for their generosity, the bowling alley held a socially distanced outdoor party. pretty nice to see. if you take a walk around downtown livermore this time of year you'll probably notice a number of trees covered in sweaters. it's the effort by a group of fiber artists hoping to bring joy and art into the town. melissa pixcar has the story. >> they call it the tree sweater forest to beautify livermore. when i'm putting them up, people are like they're back? this is great. some people are like why are you putting a sweater on the tree? they don't get cold. >> it is created to the art

appreciation and an opportunity to share back some joy with our community. >> the tree sweaters coming up, fall is coming. because of what's going on, at least this got to go up this year so it helps people realize everything is going to be okay. >> after the sweaters are taken down, we make sure it goes to local animal shelters where pups and kittens waiting for homes will have something cushy to lay on, something comfortable while they wait for their new family. >> right now is a really good time for this. people are happy when they see the trees go up. it's supposed to represent the love we have for our arts. when we're recognized it makes us want to do it again next year. which we will. no whoas what we'll come one next year. >> that's what all of these tree sweaters help us do in our community.

>> that's beautiful. i love that. downtown livermore two sweater forest will be up until november 15th before the sweaters are donated to a local animal shelt shelter. >> you ma i have seen it last night if you looked up, you would have seen this rare blue moon. the phenomenon happens whenever there are two full moons in the same month, hence the saying once in a blue moon. this was the first blue moon of halloween since 1944. and here is a look from over the bay bridge, how beautiful is that? in case you're wondering the term blue moon has nothing to do with color. the moon can sometimes appear blue because of dust or smoke particles in the earth's atmosphere. and plenty of people got their own photos and video of this, i hope you can see, here you can see people gathering there in the city in alamo square to film the moon's rising, in the distance, you can see the top of city hall lit up orange for halloween and there is the moon right there above it.

so beautiful, frances, did you stay up past your bedtime to get a glimpse? >> i did, liz. i stayed up way past my bedtime even though we got the extra hour of sleep. today the man rises at 6:10 and sun sets at 5:10 so you'll be able to see almost a full moon at 9.2%. let's take to you live doppler 7. mostly clear skies with a shallow marine layer. there is some fog though in half moon bay reduced visibility down to a half a mile. in santa rosa, temperatures are cooling down. we could get close enough to the dew point, the air is saturated and we could see more fog develop there. also a live shot from sutro hanging out downtown san francisco and the bay bridge it's gorgeous out there right now and mild in san francisco, where it's currently 57 dealings. oakland is at 52. mountain view at 45 and san jose

at 50 degrees and this time a live camera shot in san rafael, so in santa rosa, that's where temperatures are cool, 43 degrees. we've got mid-40s as well through novato, napa, fairfield, concord up to 48 degrees right now. and check out the golden gate bridge, what you'll notice is the flag is kind of blowing in the offshore direction. when we have the offshore land breeze things will warm up. temperatures well above average. sunrise at 6:35, sunset at 5:10, that's a big change. of course we set our clocks back an hour and a chance of rain by the end of the week. so we're tracking that for you, and it's looking like it will cool down temperatures but we'll see how the chance of rain plays out. notice the forecast animation with the clouds clearing so plenty of sunshine, even tonight, to some clouds off the coast. highs today will be really comfortable, especially even at the beaches, upper 60s to near 70. 68 in half moon bay, santa cruz

different because of the pandemic and here at abc 7 we are exploring the new way to holiday. 7 on your side's michael finney has a look at a radically changed black friday. >> reporter: remember black friday lines on thanksgiving day? >> the crowd was terrible but i came in, the parking was also terrible. >> reporter: squeezing through the store doors and the mad dash through the aisles. then loading up on great deals. that was then. and this is now. pandemic now. this year will be a little more mellow than in the past, starting the day before black friday. >> the biggest difference is that major retailers are not opening on thanksgiving this year. >> reporter: few know more about black friday than christian mcgrath, editor of blackfriday.com. she says there will be as many deals online as in stores so there is less of a reason to go

out. carla martin with deloitte consulting, listen to what she has to say. >> i think this year in our survey we're seeing that cyber money is going to surpass black friday. black friday is an event. right? >> reporter: right, an event that may have less appeal during a pandemic. >> with covid doing that six feet apart, the way they have to throttle you in and out of the store, it kind of is a wet blanket on the whole event. >> reporter: so a lot of this year's retailing efforts will swing away from events and towards online sales. either way, gift card expert shelly hunter says shoppers are ready for a good time and shopping. >> people are just ready for the holidays so they're out there looking for deals now and stores are responding. >> reporter: with deals that not with much information so far about what to expect from black friday. an exception is walmart, the retail giant is releasing information and walmart is all in but in a much different way.

alma dates tells us how covid is affecting ice rinks. >> reporter: outdoor ice skating rinks have become a bay area holiday tradition. by the first week of november union square would look like a winter wonderland. this year these traditions are put on ice. >> during the winter i lot of people look forward to ice skating. this might be the first year they won't have the traditions. >> reporter: connor spence decided not to open. >> if somebody got sick or my staff i'd feel horrid. >> reporter: none of the usual outdoor ice skating rinks in the bay area are opening this year, that includes the rinks at embarcadero and union square in san francisco, san mateo, napa, marin and walnut creek. safety is one reason. money is the other. it cost norcal ice $200,000 to operate the rink. >> in years past i'd cycle

through 500 to 600 skaters on a busy day. cut that down by 25%, 30%, there's no way to afford the equipment and staffing required to operate a rink. >> reporter: the cancellations have been devastating to emery likens. >> normally we'd be doing maintenance getting ready for the season. >> reporter: he owns special ice which helps operate more than a dozen seasonal ice rinks in california. >> this whole tent is our ice rental skates. >> reporter: normally he'd have a team of employees working full time testing the equipment and loading them up on trailers. hundreds of seasonal employees would be ready to staff the ice rinks. instead, his storage yard is quiet this year. the zambonis are collecting dust. >> when i have to make phone calls to 150 people that have worked for us and say we don't have anything for you this year, those are tough phone calls to have. >> reporter: the money he got

welcome back. oakland's annual community thanksgiving dinner will look different because of the pandem pandemic. thousands of low income families and homeless people have been served a holiday feast at one location. this is video of last year's event at the oakland marriott. this year, that's where meals will be cooked and then they're going to be distributed to food pantries. several thousand will also be delivered directly to people who are homebound. oakland's day of banks will be held two days before the official holiday. a big day for the 49ers on this nfl sunday. flying north to seattle for the first time since this heartstopping victory last year and the seahawks are the ones on top of the division this time around. next, hear why this game is only just the first test in seeing if the niners can make it back to the playoffs. but first, before we get to that, let's get a check of the

temperatures right now range from 40s to 50s. san francisco is 57. san jose is 50 degrees but mountain view and half moon bay are in the mid-40s right now and this is a view from our roof looking at a flaccid flag because winds sore calm right now. we will have an offshore flow develop and that brings us the warmer conditions. in santa rosa, it's 43. lots of mid-40s through novato, napa, fairfield and even livermore. this live shot in walnut creek shows some clear skies, a few little thin clouds out there, and the sunrise will be setting much later today at 6:35. this morning, sun sets much earlier at 5:10 this evening. warm and sunny days, above average the next couple of days and mild throughout the week but then a chance of rain comes in as temperatures drop by the end of the week. i'll show you that with the accuweather seven-day forecast. notice the clouds push off the coast and will be mostly under clear skies, even tonight, and

into tomorrow, highs today will be well above average. at the beaches, upper 60s to near 70. san francisco 75, and near 80 degrees around the bay in many spots like richmond 79, san mateo 78. oakland and palo alto at 80 degrees. san jose 83. so plenty of sunshine for everybody, but if you are heading to the beaches, be careful. there could be some huge breakers today, up to 12 feet in some favored areas, so this brings us a risk of rip currents and also some sneaker waves especially for the west-northwest facing beaches, currently wave heights are at five feet, and the beach hazards through tomorrow until 5:00. overnight lows will be mainly in the 50s around the bay, san francisco 54. san jose 53, but then in the north bay and some areas will be dropping into the 40s like santa rosa and ukiah at 43 degrees. here is a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast, so enjoy that extra hour of
