d.c. with the details. >> reporter: good morning. despite what the polls are showing right now, both campaigns were operating as if this race is still either candidate's to win. with the race to the white house approaching the finish line -- >> it's time for donald trump to pack his bags and go home. >> reporter: president trump and joe biden laser focused on critical battleground states. >> we are going to win the state of michigan again. >> reporter: trump holding five large rallies across five states on sunday. playing defense in states he won in 2016. >> we're going to win four more years in the white house. >> reporter: in iowa, the latest des moines register poll shows he has a seven-point lead over joe biden. biden leading by the same margin in pennsylvania. a state both candidates need to win the white house. >> president trump is terrified of what will happen in pennsylvania if you have your say he doesn't stand a chance.

>> reporter: biden slamming the president's handling of the coronavirus. >> imagine where we'd be if this president just wore a mask instead of mocking it from the beginning. >> it's a choice between a deadly biden lockdown, he wants to lock down. we're never locking down. >> reporter: trump raising eyebrows with this comment. >> we should know the result of the election on november 3rd. that's the way it's been. >> reporter: while news outlets project a winner early, vote talleys have never been final on election night. in fact this year, with record mail-in ballots already cast, the final results could take a while to certify. >> it's more important that we get a count that's accurate than a count that's fast. >> reporter: in anticipation of protests on election night, federal law enforcement sources are telling abc news there's a plan today to install non-scalable fences around the white house. you're seeing video of some of them. they're going to add more

according to those sources. all around d.c. we've seen several businesses also boarding up. faith abubey, abc7 news. >> thank you. on the peninsula, san mateo county will offer early voting at 45 locations today. county election officials say they've already received more than 270,000 ballots for a nearly 60% voter return rate. anyone registered in san mateo county can vote at any of the voting centers, and they're open from 9:00 to 5:00 today. more than 579,000 voters have returned their ballots in santa clara county. officials say the numbers from the first day of early voting compared to early voting for the primary seem to show that turnout would be high. ballot sorting and processing is now under way. we would like to know how voting is going for you. you can vote by mail, drop off your ballot or in person through a form we posted on abc7news.com/election. developing news on the

covid-19 emergency. cases are rising in 48 states, the exceptions are delaware and nebraska. last year california reported more than 4,500 new cases of coronavirus. that's higher than the 14-day average which is around 4,200 cases. europe is dealing with a second lockdown. a six-month state of emergency in spain has triggered riots in the country. you can see here crowds clashing with police breaking windows, throwing fireworks, and in england prime minister boris johnson says many businesses will close starting this thursday. even though the bay area fared better than many other places around the state and country, doctors say we should be on the alert for a third wave. julian glover is live with those concerns. julian? >> good morning. yes. an infectious disease expert with stanford university says we should be concerned about a new single day record of coronavirus cases here in the country. the good news however is that the bay area and california as a

whole is faring better than the rest of the country. we spoke to dr. dean winslow. he said we're seeing a third wave right now. the first one being in march, april, may. the second in july and august following memorial day and the fourth of july. now we're in this third wave as the weather gets cooler, people retreat inside and more business begin to welcome customers indoors in california and across the country. at a time when 48 out of 50 states are hitting new records for positive cases, dr. winslow says we must keep our guard up. >> what i'm concerned about, though, is people getting together in large groups for the holidays, both thanksgiving and christmas. it requests that everyone be tested for covid-19 within 72 hours or so of showing up. >> the doctor pointed out that we have to keep in mind county health directors and political leaders have been far more cautious in the bay area than in other parts of the country.

speeding. happening today, justice amy coney barrett is set to join her supreme court colleagues to hear arguments for the first time. the first two cases barrett will hear will regard the freedom of information act and another regarding disability benefits for railroad employees. the high court is hearing cases over the phone because of the pandemic so the public won't see the new justice but they'll hear her if she has questions. she was sworn in last week delivering a win for trump that tips the supreme court to the right. a time to celebrate and remember those who have passed. and with halloween now behind us, are you ready for the holiday spirit? holiday spirit? mariah carey saysng prop 15? joe biden. biden says, "every kid deserves a quality education and every family deserves to live in a safe, healthy community. that's why i support prop. 15." vote yes. schools and communities first is responsible for the contents of this ad.

session, we had a car procession. >> we had an entire family playing music together on the back of a truck which enlivened the celebration. >> reporter: giving community members an opportunity to reflect about those who have passed. >> today i'm remembering my mother. >> reporter: and as many wait for their loved ones to visit, they believe this is part of paving the way. in san francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. happening today in the south bay, elected leaders are expected to rally outside the silicon valley organization in san jose to speak out against a racist campaign ad. it featured a group of black men in the street with text saying do you really want to sign on to this? the ad targeted a city council candidate for taking part in protests following the death of george floyd in may. the svo since removed the ad, the ceo resigned. the svo apologized for the

mailer and admitted it was racist. the warriors are looking to take a legal battle involving their former arena to the state's highest court. the oakland alameda coliseum authority says the warriors owe more than $40 million for renovations back in 1996. so far the courts have agreed. the authority says the warriors filed for a hearing with the state supreme court. the warriors are disputing the amount of the debt chronicle insider phil matier that they will pay what the courts determine they owe. you can read matier's columns every sunday and wednesday. do you wait until after thanksgiving to put out your christmas decorations, or are you mariah carey? ♪ >> it's time.

south san francisco. 84 would be a record high in napa today. a lot of low to mid 80s through the north bay valleys. along the east bay shore, the record is 81. i'm going with 80. a lot of 79 and80 degree highs. inland, 84. the record today in livermore is around 90. still mid 80s there. more low clouds and fog tonight ee except the inland east bay neighborhoods. you can see the warm air coming up from the south. look to the west of that or to the left of your screen. that's a deepening trough of low pressure that is going to take us out of the 70s and 80s and pput us into the 50s and 60s fo a high. look at that. above average temperatures today, election day. tomorrow, wednesday, thursday, and we're about 10, 15 degrees cooler friday, saturday and sunday with some slight chances of showers.

countries have started their second lockdown. number four, lawyers for the calvary chapel in san jose will be in court today. they're fighting a $300,000 fine and possible jail time for its senior pastor because they're refusing to comply with public health orders. number five. near record high temperatures today with napa having our best bet of setting one. within a degree in oakland, concord and san jose with low to mid 80s. i'm following a motorcycle crash in vallejo. injuries have been reported. not clear on lane blockages in the area, this is westbound 80 at the magazine street off-ramp. number seven, one of the top trends on twitter overnight, a british court ruling against johnny depp and his libel lawsuit against the owner of "the sun" tabloid. "the sun" called depp a wife beater in a headline. the court found the words were substantially true. lori loughlin is in prison in dublin this morning.

anthony fauci after the election. dr. fauci has become more outspoken that the president ignored his advice to contain the virus. he said he has not talked to the president in more than a month. >> fire fauci! >> don't tell anybody but let me wait a little bit until after the election. >> we'll have to get covid under control. it's almost criminal the way he handled it. >> brdonald trump was informed january 28th about the seriousness of this, informed it's five times more deadly than the flu, what did he do with that information? he sat on it. he covered it up. he suggested that it's a hoax. >> dr. fauci says the nation is in for a challenging winter if more isn't done to slow the spread of covid-19. the u.s. has passed 9 million coronavirus cases, more than 230,000 people have died. >> thank you. the biden campaign is bringing some serious star power

to the final night of campaigning. lady gaga is going to be appearing with joe biden and his wife, jill, during a stop in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. the singer joined biden in 2017 on a campaign to raise awareness about sexual assault. john legend will be at a rally in philadelphia tonight with senator kamala harris. he lent his voice to the biden campaign this year for different fund-raisers. the bay area is leading the way for california early voting. going into this weekend nearly half of voters turned in their ballots. amy hollyfield is live for us in san francisco. i'm loving how city hall is lit up. hi, amy. >> good morning. yeah, it was a busy weekend for early voting both here in san francisco's civic center plaza and around the bay area. some cool venues around the bay area turned into voting centers including levi stadium down in santa clara and then the former practice court for the warriors in oakland, and then the chase

center in san francisco. warriors coach steve kerr was on hand to encourage and applaud people for voting. >> we're trying to remind everybody not only of the importance of voting but that we're trying to make it as easy as possible to exercise your vote and it's important for everybody to have that right and to have easy access. >> here is the big number. more than 10.5 million people have already sent in their ballots in california. registrars across the bay area say they're seeing record numbers in their counties. alameda says they have not seen election numbers like this before. san francisco saying this is the highest in the city's history at this point in the election. tomorrow is the big day, of course, but it looks like opening up these extra locations for early voting this weekend really paid off. people took advantage of it and got their ballots in. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news.

abc news coverage continues at 8:35. we're back at 11:00 with the latest on what we know before you go to bed. lawyers for a san jose church, they will appear in court today. they are fighting a $300,000 fine and possible jail time for its senior pastor because they refused to comply with health orders. calvary chapel said their services were essential during the pandemic. a lawsuit was filed against the church for holding indoor gatherings for about 700 people. that's far more than the 100 people allowed. the church will continue to be fined $5,000 for each day it continues to defy the public health order. sonoma county officials will meet today to decide whether to impose thousands of dollars in fines against the organization of the hollo-wine half marathon. the county issued citations to several people in healdsburg on

saturday for violating the county's health ordinance. the race organizer told us there were no more than six people at one time spread out over five hours. coming up, the fbi now joining the investigation into this incident involving trump supporters and a biden/harris campaign trusbus. the separate incident that happened in the bay area. the milpitas woman who converted her home into a day of the dead altar. what happened next was unexpected. first we check traffic with jobina. >> thank you. i'm following a crash in vallejo right now involving a motorcycle and one other car. at least two lanes are blocked at the moment. this is westbound 80 at magazine street off-ramp there. a live look showing you the golden gate bridge. looking a bit better now. we saw a lot of fog blowing through earlier. no advisories from the chp. emeryville is getting busy. you can see some fog there on the camera. this is westbound 80.

the bay bridge toll plaza, which is moving very smoothly. let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco. hi, mike. >> hi, jobina. thank you very much. appreciate that information. let's look at what's going on with our temperatures. we have microclimates this morning. depending on your elevation, you can see in los gatos and los altos hill, some 60s. 40s for the rest of the south bay. 45 in morgan hill. a lot of 40s out there in the valleys and mid 50s around oakland and san carlos and san francisco and bodega bay. east bay hills camera, 68 degrees right now. other than the fog, it ought to be easy commuting weather-wise. it's one of those days, jacket in the morning, not in the afternoon, make sure you have the sunglasses. don't need the umbrella. tomorrow, in case you haven't voted yet, it will be a great day weather-wise with just a few high clouds and sunshine. the polls open, temperatures in

8,000 homeless people living in the city including about 2,400 living in hotels. a 150-year-old tradition in san francisco's chinatown will be different next year. there will be no live chinese new year festival and parade. san francisco chinese chamber of commerce cites safety concerns amid the pandemic. the parade is billed as the largest lunar new year parade outside of asia. next year floats will be put on display along with statues celebrating the year of the ox around san francisco. >> we'll have an appropriate event in chinatown for the local community. we don't want people to come from all over the region and all over the country and all over the world. but chinatown will celebrate itself in a healthy way. >> this year's lunar new year parade was held at the beginning of february as concerns about coronavirus were starting to rise. thousands turned out including several elected officials.

a 92-year-old san jose gift shop is back after being shut down for eight months because of the pandemic. the owners of the store never doubted this day would come. over the months the "mercury news" say they spent that time getting inventory like cat statues, japanese print bowls and origami. the owner's brother explained his sister's decision. >> she's paying attention to the county guidelines, and now feels safe enough to institute the plexiglass and hand sanitizer and social distancing and wearing a mask that we think we could be safe. >> so he says their business was able to survive because the family owns the building. it is one of the oldest in japantown. a milpitas woman converted her home into a day of the dead altar. it started as an idea to do something fun to help the stanford organization families at the border. it is dedicated to supporting refugees and tijuana.

walmart is putting firearms and ammunition back on store shelv shelves. last week the retailer pulled them from store shelves over fears of election unrest. several stores were damaged last week because of civil unrest but walmart determined those situations were geographically isolated so they'll restockock firearms and ammunition. with covid-19 many people are wondering if voting is safe on election day. >> the dean of brown university said it is safe to go out and vote in person. to stay safe, wear a mask, stay six feet from others. the doctor also offered this advice from voters.
