oakland will be one of the lively ones. >> social media fights misinformation on election day. what you need to know if a candidate claims victory too soon. if you're voting in favor of mild weather, i've got it. returning to in-person instruction. san jose plans to bring back students in person. tonight, we are just hours away from the polls opening across the nation and the bay area. the candidates crisscrossing the united states. >> voters in new hampshire cast their votes at midnight eastern time, five votes for joe biden and zero for president trump. >> nationally, nearly 100

million people have already voted. californians lead the nation in returned ballots with more than 12 million. here in the bay area, voters have cast more than 2.6 million votes. >> here's a look at the break town of the nine bay area counties. santa clara has the most with 603,000 votes cast, alameda is close behind. we'll start with ginbert. >> reporter: down in the polls but boosted by confidence, president trump is blitzing battleground states in the embers of a fiery reelection bid. >> this does not look like a second-place finish. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: on the eve of the election, trump swinging through north carolina, michigan, wisconsin and the electoral crown jewel of pennsylvania, all states he won in 2016.

former vice president joe biden holds a slim but steady lead in pennsylvania polls, his campaign blanketing the state in a sprint to the finish line. >> we're going to win pennsylvania and show the world what america stands for. >> we're all here, and this is biden country, isn't? >> reporter: biden is also hoping to hold the blue wall democratic states that collapsed in 2016 where polling shows his ticket is ahead. for trump, the battle to win florida presents a possible path to victory for a second term. >> they're very worried, the democrats, about florida. they're very concerned. >> reporter: and, as early and mail-in voting shatter records, trump is doubling done that the election is being stolen from him. >> especially when you fwhee goes on in philadelphia and has been going on for years. so governor, please open up your

state and don't cheat. >> reporter: the latest 538 forecast has the president with a 10% chance of beating biden. biden is turning to suburban voters to make inroads in his efforts to secure the nation's highest office. >> tomorrow, tomorrow we have an opportunity to put an end to a presidency that's divided this nation. >> reporter: some 100 million americans have already cast their ballots, and in some crucial battleground states, the ones that could ultimately decide this election, it could take days to certify electoral votes. but in other states like florida and arizona we could get results much sooner, perhaps by election night. thanks, andrew. in the east bay, officials in alameda county say they have already broken records with the number of people who have turned in their ballots early, j.r. stone reports from oakland, where there's a big push to get non-voters to the polls.

>> reporter: carts full of early ballots coming in by the thousands in alameda county. >> i just voted! >> reporter: and the number of people who have voted here is breaking records. >> we have never seen this early return ever. >> reporter: alameda county registrar says in 2018 70% 70 0 the returns came by mail. that number is now at 80%. while everyone has been positive, it's not to say there haven't been issues. >> we usually vote by mail, but we didn't get our ballots this year. i know a lot of other people who didn't get their blolallots thi year. >> reporter: but they had no issues coming and voting in person. here on popular street in west oakland, all is quiet now, but it will be a different story tuesday, a sort of outdoor

that claim victory too soon. kate larsen spoke to cyber security and tech experts about what you need to look out for on social media on election day. >> misinformation is lies. >> reporter: cyber security experts say twitter and facebook have spent millions to combat misinformation to make sure unlike the 2016 presidential election the platforms are not misused. >> we don't want to have any kind of bias in any information unless it is solid and clear and came from multiple sources. >> reporter: because of the pandemic, americans are casting more mail-in ballots. facebook and twitter created new labels in the event a candidate or party claims premature victory. you may come across content flagged, a blue label says official sources call this

election differently. others are in black and say votes are still being counted or too early to call. >> reporter: people won't go to the polls if they think a race has already been called. >> if someone calls a race that has not been counted and the final results come out, it leaves open conspiracy theorists and brings the whole election process into question and undermines our democracy. >> reporter: she recommends staying off social media on election day and reading and watching trusted news sites, papers. >> needless to say, we going all in on this election to make sure you have complete coverage of the races that matter to you. and we sent dion lim to the east coast. >> reporter: good evening from a very chilly city of brotherly love. we're in pennsylvania, because this battleground state has been so crucial for both candidates.

developing news, a san francisco firefighter is in critical can condition tonight after being knocked out while responding to a fire. a muni bus drove through the scene on spear street. it caused a hose line to strike the firefighter who fell to the ground and hit his head. he was knocked unconscious and rushed to san francisco general hospital.

last month, jason cortez was killed during a training accident. a blast water from a valve that was inadvertently opened knocked him over a third floor railing. the man had been with the san francisco department since 2007. the focus on education in the return to classrooms during the pandemic is a major part of building a better bay area. in the south bay, san jose unified announced it will start the new year with in-person instruction, but it's not a guarantee. >> reporter: a big step for san jose unified school district, giving students the option to get back inside the classroom beginning january 5th. kelly walker felt safe back in august. her students stayed distant. >> coming in contact with fewer people, when, you know, not everyone is there. >> reporter: that will change if santa clara county can remain in the less-restrictive tiers.

liccardo are pushing governor newsom to reopen larger theme parks. the mayors signed a letter encouraging the governor to allow parks like disneyland to reopen if they're in the orange tier. currently, a county the theme park is in would have to be in the yellow tier. they point out that theme parks across the country have reopened effectively. you can find our reopening tracker on abc 7 news.com. now election day tomorrow should be great weather before things really change. >> yes, let's get to meteorologist sandhya patel with the latest. >> yeah, the weather looks fantastic. you have no excuse tomorrow for voting, obviously, to head to the polls. take a look at the sun rise at 6:37. temperatures are going to start off on the cool side in the 40s. so you will need to bundle up. sunshine and fog.

and low 60s to low 80s but certainly a little cooler than today. at 8:00 p.m. you will notice temperatures 50s to 60s. it will be dry even though we need the rain, favorable weather for voting. take a live look at the great weather for election day, much cooler and windy for the end of the week. if you have a workweek or showers through sunday. not looking definitive, but i'm just putting it out there. temperatures anywhere from the 40s to low 60s. and here's a look at numbers first thing in the morning. they're going to fall. low 40s to low 50s. we have cooler nights, which means you will need to grab a sweater or jacket. visibility will be low around the coast. tomorrow afternoon, 70 in san francisco, 62 in half moon bay all the way to the low 80s.

78 san jose. 77 in napa. today's high temperatures anywhere from 6 to 16 degrees above average. that's going to change. up to 20 degrees cooler by the time we head into friday. mid-50s to mid-60s is it. and the winds kick up. you're looking at 50s and 60s. so it's going to feel like a big shift in our weather in the bay area. two cold systems coming down, that's what's going to drop our temperatures and keck up tick u winds. it could bring us a stray shower or two. snow level will be beginning around 6,000 feet, dropping to 3,000 on saturday. and they will be getting powder in the sierra. sunday's our best chance for seeing wet weather around here. these are long-range models. as we get closer, we'll pin point it for you.
