but let's all just take a deep breath and just do what we need to do on this tuesday, november 3rd. but, first, we check in with meteorologist mike nicco. >> oops. >> you know what to do today. >> there we go. >> yes. that is so cute. >> reggie has his mask and jobina has her shirt and i have my sticker from voting. kumasi? >> i'm going to go get mine, friend. >> good. we knew you did. let's take a look at what's going on. visibility is getting dangerously low across parts of the north bay especially around santa rosa but good news for places like petaluma. the onshore breeze will push some of the fog off to along 37 and head over towards vallejo and napa and sure enough we'll see an uptick in the fog and also some of the low clouds trying to slip down the east bay shoreline and into the south bay.

so, we'll call that partly cloudy right now. temperatures today still a few 80s in our east bay valleys and most of us in the 70s and coast in the san francisco in the 50s. five to ten degrees cooler than yesterday. still too warm for this time of year. kumasi. >> i'll take it from there, thanks, mike. happening now the polls are officially open and voting is under way in most of the continental u.s. >> i'll take it from here. let's take a live look right now at voters. they are lining up as you can see. this is in anderson county, south carolina. another very crucial state. voters in swing states will likely be deciding this election and because many of these states are several time zones ahead of us, we'll start to see the election results this afternoon. so, here's a look at some of the big ones that we will be tracking. the following times are pacific times. polls in georgia and parts of florida close at 4:00 p.m. our time and the florida panhandle and parts of michigan and pennsylvania it will be 5:00 p.m. when the polls close.

michigan, arizona and wisconsin will close at 6:00 and polls in iowa will close at 7:00 and, again, these references are all pacific time. okay, now my turn i think. this morning the average of national poll show that joe biden is leading with eight points but we all need to remember that is not how elections are won in this country, they are won using the electoral college. that means tonight it all comes down to a few states. jobina at the live desk with more on where both candidates are going to be as those results come in. >> the biden campaign in delaware and president trump plans to have 400 people at the white house. both candidates are confident about their chances at the ballot box. in their closing message, joe biden and his running mate senator kamala harris as new cases increase in nearly all 50 states. >> we're going to beat this virus. we're going to get it under control and the first step, the first step to beating this virus is beating donald trump. >> they hate it when i say we're

rounding the corner. it's going to end anyway. but the vaccine will make it go a lot quicker. >> a new internal memo obtained by "washington post" white house task force coordinator dr. deborah birx says we're entering, quote, the most deadly phase of the pandemic. as polls open across the country this morning, we have already seen america hit 73% of the total voting turnout in the 2016 election. reggie? >> jobina, thank you. we are going all in on this election to make sure that you have complete coverage of the races that matter to you. abc7 news anchor dion lim on the east coast and tonight she'll join joe biden and kamala harris in delaware. you can watch for her reports on air this afternoon and online. and as jobina mentioned, coming into election day it's clear that americans want their voices heard. nearly 100 million of us have already voted across the u.s. and california is leading the nation in return ballots with more than 12 million. so, here in the bay area voters

have cast more than 2.6 million votes. here's the breakdown of the nine bay area counties. santa clara had the most with more than 603,000 votes cast and alameda is close behind with more than 575,000 ballots. with all the uncertainty with how tonight might turn out some businesses in the bay area are preparing for the possibility of protests. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield live in walnut creek the latest city to start boarding up businesses. amy? >> kumasi feels like the big winners in all of this are the sales people who sell pliwood. this is broadway plaza and neiman marcus. although you can't tell. it's completely covered. you can't recognize it. here is a look at a drive through the area. not all businesses have chosen to take this precaution but many have. police have said they don't have any information about planned protests or unrest. they have no threats.

but they understand why businesses would want to prepare just in case these windows are expensive to replace. one store even got creative with it and at least made it something nice to look at. look at this picture of venture goods in lafayette. the owners covered their store with boards that tom painted. he painted them in his backyard to resemble the hills of lafayette. they arive coing up as a precaution. they do want everyone to know they are still open. closing early today as a safety precaution. businesses are doing this all across the country. rodeo drive in beverly hills is shutting down today and tomorrow. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield. >> thank you, amy. we will be watching as the polls begin to close tonight. abc news kicks off coverage at 4:00 this afternoon. a special edition of abc7 news airs at 8:00 with a check on all the bay area races and we will

all right. welcome back. 6:09. let's head up to the north bay where we have a mixture of 40s and 50s and the thickest fog around is up in the north bay and be there for the entire morning commute. mid 40s to 50s everywhere and jacket weather as you would expect. as your activity planner shows not quite as warm this afternoon. no records but still a great time to be outside ask take some breaks if you're working from home or remote learning or get the yard work finished before it gets way too windy this weekend. worst air quality around fresno. for us yellow and green, so that's moderate to good. and the bay area air quality management district says it will stay that way through thursday and then with that changing of

how can we keep giving billions in tax breaks to rich corporations when our communities need that money? prop 15 closes corporate loopholes and invests in our schools, health care, and public safety. help us do our jobs. vote yes on 15. new this morning an extraordinary rescue in turkey. several days after a 7.0 earthquake. look at this. this rescue crew pulled a young girl alive from the rubble. wow. she had been trapped beneath a collapsed building for more than three days. more than 100 people have died after that earthquake. it was on friday and nearly 8,000 crew members are out on rescue and recovery efforts just like this one. oh, goodness. thank goodness she's okay. developing news of several terror attacks in vienna

austria. five people have died including a suspect and more than a dozen other people are hurt. this video you can see people running from shooting and stabbing attacks at six locations near the center of the city. the first shooting happened outside a synagogue. police eventually killed one attacker. they believe he had ties to isis but they don't think he acted alone. officials said they since searched 15 homes and arrested several people. more than half of california voters have already cast their ballots in california but now a judge says the governor went too far when he ordered that ballots should be sent to every voter in the state. this doesn't actually change anything today for this election because the legislature ended up approving the governor's pandemic-related voting procedures. still,he sutter county superior court judge said governor newsom has to stop issuing directives that would change existing state laws. the governor's legal team has

ten days to challenge that decision. here in the bay area, marin county is thinking of quarantining residents if they travel out of the region over the holidays. the county's public health officer is worried about people traveling to other parts of the country with higher coronavirus tranmission rates and then coming back here to the bay area and spreading it. there could be a 14-day quarantine when these travelers come back. want to emphasize an official order has not been issued but also want to let you know that marin is thinking about it. we are tracking the latest with covid-19, especially as we get close to the holiday. right now on our website, you can find a risk calculator. it lays out the safest and most dangerous things to do this holiday season. check it out now, abc7news.com. facebook and twitter say they will be fighting election misinformation by flagging posts that claim victory too soon. the companies have spent billions of dollars to make sure that their platforms are not

misused. here's an example of what the flagged content would look like. experts worry that people won't go to the polls if the race has already been called. >> if someone calls a race which has actually not been counted and the final roulesults come o it will leave the conspiracy tha and that brings it into question. >> experts recommend you stay off social media instead read and watch trusted news sites, tv papers a pa and papers. a san francisco church is helping evea family who lost everything in the fire. many families lost their priceless memorabilia. so, the church is offering free photo shoots to the wildfire survivors. >> some of the photo albums that they lost in the fires we thought that's not something that they can replace. so, the small thing that we can do to give back is at least try to provide a glimpse of hope.

fast winds around 20 to 40 miles per hour. unfortunately our chances of showers from the storms bringing us the cooler weather looking less likely and the fire season is going to continue. 73 in sunnyvale and san jose 78 to 84 in gilroy. those are your south bay temperatures. 72 to 76 on the peninsula. narrow along the peninsula coast. 62 to 64 there. and then you can see in downtown and south san francisco up to 10 degrees cooler today. 68 and 72. north bay we have 69 in sausalito and then we jump into the mid 70s to mid 80s to cloverdale 83. along the east bay shore richmond 70 and oakland, san leandro and newark 73 and fremont at 75 and inland 78 san ramon. tonight we're back in the 40s and 50s, once again, with the same cloud pattern as this morning. here's a look at friday and you can see it's just raining cats and dogs up in oregon and washington and some mountain snow and then this thing goes inside. yes, it hits the sierra and

inside slider and miss us by a couple hundred miles and scattered showers at best and saturday is just going to be blustery and dry with scattered snow showers in the sierra and then another chance of snow sunday with just some isolated showers for the rest of us. while up to a foot of snow may fall in the sierra, we'll be lucky if we get a couple 0.01 of rain out of that. record highs thursday and then 10 to 20 degrees cooler friday with 50s and 60s all the way through monday. have a good one. get out there and vote. >> thanks, mike. here's a live look at scranton, pennsylvania, on this election day. you see the back of joe biden. just was kind of curious what she was saying but couldn't really hear it. this is one of his final campaign events today. he is visiting with union members and traveling with some of his grandchildren this morning. now, here's a look at the very first in-person election day votes. voters in teeny tiny dixville notch. i believe they have about 12 residents. this is in new hampshire. they casted their votes at midnight eastern time and only five are eligible to vote and all went to joe biden and zero for president trump and one of them who voted said he is a life-long republican and decided that this time to go biden.

coverage this morning but, first, we want to check in with mike. >> all right, thank you, kumasi. reggie, jobina. hi, everybody. thank you for joining us on this election tuesday. north bay and the usual areas that came in through the valleys and heading over towards santa rosa and the wind is blowing onshore so that could help dissipate it a little bit. you could see around petaluma where we had thicker fog it moved over to napa ask kind of dissipated also. we're looking at cloud cover filling with the onshore breeze and that is going to mean temperatures five to ten degrees cooler today but still well warmer than average with some 80s inour inland east bay neighborhood and most in the 70s until you get to san francisco and the coast where we'll have 68 in san francisco and low to mid 60s along the coast. so pretty quiet weather for your voting pleasure today. let's get some news. reggie? >> that sounds good, mike, thank you. a long and bitter campaign

season comes to an end today. a record number of people have already returned their ballots and the candidates are making their final pleas to voters. with a narrow path to victory ahead for him, president trump's focus is on the electoral system falsely claiming that the election could be stolen from him. he is furious. the supreme court ruled that pennsylvania ballots postmarked by november 3rd can be accepted for up to three days after the election. >> i think it's a very, very dangerous decision. >> i don't care how much donald trump tries. there's nothing, nothing he's going to do to stop the people in this nation from voting. >> officials say tallying all the ballots could take days in some states. president trump has one top plan today at his election office in virginia. joe biden is going to close things out where it all started for him in his hometown of scranton, pennsylvania. voting polls are already open in much of the u.s. jobina fortson at the live desk with all the action this morning.

jobina? >> cast their ballots right now. polls open within the last few hours and take a live look showing you voting under way in boston. definitely a lot of people we see there. more so than the live pictures we've seen across the country. turnout this year is much higher than in year's past. nearly 99 million americans turned in their ballots before election day this year. you'll have to keep watching abc7 as election results start pouring in. we'll close them around 4:00 pacific time. reggie? >> if you are eligible to vote whether you registered or not, you can still cast a ballot today at your polling place. when you do so, you'll join the majority of voters here in the bay area who have already worn their i voted stickers. julian glover is live at levi stadium where people can continue to vote this morning. julian. >> hi, good morning, reggie. yeah, voters here in the bay area all across california clearly energized and we can tell by the early voter turnout

already. we expect folks to come out here and vote on election day at one of the voter centers where we're live at levi stadium. so many voters here in california and again the bay area have already cast their vote by mail. want to run you down some of the numbers here starting with nationally. nearly 100 million people have voted in california and more than 12 million ballots have been cast and in the bay area 2.6 million votes have already been secured. in many cases, those votes have been counted, as well, breaking early voting records. take santa clara county, for example, where 661,000 votes by mail have already been received by snail mail or picked up from the dropoff boxes and counted already. that's just 63,000 votes short from the total votes cast in the county and the 2016 presidential election with a full day of voting to go on election day and with many ways to do it. >> you can still cast a ballot by mail. you can still use one of our

drop boxes. you can still fill out your ballot at home and drive by the office where you don't have to leave your car. there is a drive-through vote center there. there are a lot of options where there wouldn't be any in-person contact. >> people here have been, for the most part, just really excited to vote. which it makes it exciting for us to work. >> the poll workers are excited and many of the voters i spoke to personally yesterday were excited, as well. they told me they were eager to vote in the heated presidential race but also drawn out by ballot initiatives like prop 22. now, keep in mind if you do come out to a vote center here in santa clara county or anywhere else in the bay area today and if that line looks a little long, might be a bit deceiving. keep in mine because of covid-19 restrictions fewer people are being led inside indoor vote centers and people will be spaced out and socially distanced in line.

that line might be appearing to be longer than it actually is. but i have to tell you we were out here for a couple hours outside levi stadium yesterday. there was no line. not much of a crowd. if you have that ballot already filled out you could drop it off. if you wanted to do so in person, you can do so very easily. come on out and vote. it is just that easy. reporting live outside of levi stadium, julian glover, abc7 news. >> you can maybe meet julian glover which is another plus. thanks, julian. in the east bay a big push today to bring in people who don't usually vote in alameda county. officials say they have broken early voting records but an outdoor site set up on poplar street to get more people involved in this process. >> food trucks and local artists just to make the experience more fun and not as arduous and potentially boring as it can be. >> in alameda county you can vote in person or drop off your ballot or do something that they say is will call voting which will have your ballot ready when you get there.

it lifts. east bay neighborhood where we're in the mid 40s. that is about a degree or two warmer than yesterday. we were in the low 40s and down highway 4 little milder low to mid 50s there. let's look at other areas and you can see thick fog around santa rosa and most of us in the upper 40s to mid 50s this morning. pretty close to average. san jose where you can see the cloud cover definitely spreading into the south bay right now and that's the real issue with the roads or any type of commute this morning. maybe a little breezier over the bay water but nothing we can't handle and don't forget we go from jacket weather this morning to not this afternoon. the worst air quality is going to stay well south into the central valley. the southern san joaquin valley you can see fresno right there have unhealthy air. for us with an onshore breeze today it shouldn't be quite as hazy as it was yesterday but if the haze is out there more moisture than it was smoke like we had yesterday. green and moderate and yellow right now and that's the way

all right. welcome back. oh, what a beautiful picture from mt. tam this morning. you can see a few high clouds off in the distance and a little bit of that is actually some smoke from the creek and that will stay away from us today. those clouds will linger a little bit longer and temperatures cooler about five to ten degrees cooler today. election tuesday break down and the polls open shortly in about 18 minutes and 40s and 50s. so, have a coat there and have a coat this evening. once the sun sets we'll drop into the 50s and 60s. in between you'll need a coat at the coast 50s and the rest of us in the 60s and 70s, pretty comfortable out there. still across the state with a record high of 67 possible in tahoe and look at the flip of the switch. dramatic here. we start friday, saturday, sunday maybe more than a foot of snow across the sierra.

that means less of a chance of wet weather for us. and i'll take a look at that coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. here's kumasi. less than 15 minutes to go before the polls open here on the west coast. this morning, growing concern about what might happen tonight after voting ends. businesses across the country are already preparing. boards going up yesterday in los angeles, new york city, denver, just in case protests or vandalism were to break out. the same thing is happening here. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield live in walnut creek with how police say they're preparing. amy. >> it looks like hurricane prep here in walnut creek, kumasi. look behind me. this is the neiman marcus here in broadway plaza. you can't tell. it's so covered up. you can't even recognize it. and a lot of the stores look like this. we took a drive through the area and we've got some video to show you where we can see all the businesses that have boarded up. not all of them have chosen to

take this precaution but many have. police don't have any threats but they do understand why businesses would want to prepare just in case. these windows are expensive to replace. one store even added some style to their plywood. look at this picture of venture goods in lafayette. the owners covered their store with boards that tom painted to resemble the hills of lafefayet. they're doing this as a precaution. they want everyone to know they're still open and that's the case out here at broadway plaza. you can see this sign on top of the boards at the pottery barn saying we are open for business. this neiman marcus also open today but has announced it will go ahead and close early at 5:00 today just in case. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news.

this morning getting a look at the path to victory for president trump and joe biden. jobina joining us from the live desk with how those battleground states are shaping up. jobina. >> thank you, reggie. wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania are all key states to look out for as results start coming in later today. if joe biden wins those three states, it will be tough for the president to win the re-election. tom explains why we may not know results until tomorrow. >> it all has to do with the way some of this stuff is processed. in georgia, north carolina, florida, they started processing votes already even before election day. in georgia, 15 days prior. it also started earlier in north carolina. by processing we essentially mean getting the ballots ready to be counted. early in the night we think we'll have information for florida and arizona and michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania where the election decided maybe that is a different story, george. we may not get results until tomorrow. >> in pennsylvania according to

biden holds a five-point edge. kumasi? now to your morning money report. stocking up on cleaning surprise giving and that means a big boost for oakland-based clorox. it now says it has seen the fastest growth in two decades with sales up 27% from a year ago. the clorox brand leads the way but its glad trash bags company shares jumped 3% monday and now up some 40% this year. meantime, the overall stock market is looking towards a higher opening this election day with overnight futures trading up. it will build on monday's gains. the s&p, the nasdaq and dow all jumped. the dow closing up more than 1.5%. bouncing back after its worst week since the start of the pandemic. let's take a live look right now at the new york stock exchange as trading gets under way. right now we are up significantly about 424 points. students who have the option

of returning to the classroom for in-person learning in san jose at the beginning of the year. the school district says it alerted parents they will be able to make the choice, but it's contingent on santa clara county remaining in the orange or yellow tier. san jose unified is the largest public school district in the south bay and more than 28,000 students. several big city mayors including san jose are pushing governor newsom to reopen larger theme parks. the mayor signed a letter encouraging parks like disn disneyland to reopen if a county is in the orange tier. currently a county would have to be in the yellow tier to get there. theme parks across the country have reopened effectively. how close is your county to reaching the next color tier? you can find out with our reopening tracker at abc7news.com. all right. 6:47. let's check in with mike. >> all right, thank you, kumasi. reggie, hi, everybody. thanks for joining us this morning. let's open the window from our

exploratorium window. you can see the broken deck of clouds over water and more stout over land. we're starting off with increasing clouds and that means slower sunshine and slightly milder temperatures today. no more records like we had in oakland and napa yesterday. seasonably cool tonight and clouds will return to the same neighborhood as we still have a slight onshore wind. and then it will get warm thursday before the hammer hits us hard with blustery, cool conditions this weekend. and shower chances unfortunately looking less likely. fire season going to continue. mid to upper 70s through most of the south bay. los gatos, morgan hill and gilroy the warmer spots. 72 in millbrae and everybody else in the mid 70s on the peninsula. 62 to 64 along the peninsula coast. now you head over to the bay side and you've got downtown and south san francisco around 68 to 72. we've got sausalito at 69 and then you jump into the mid and upper 70s through most of the

north bay and even some 80s from calistoga northward. east bay shore, we have 70 in richmond and 72 in berkeley and everybody else in the mid 70s. and a lot of low 80s in the east bay valleys except for san ramon at 78 degrees. tonight you can see pretty much the same temperatures and same cloud cover as this morning. let's jump ahead to friday and watch very impressive shield of rain and snow but most of the energy slides inside towards the sierra so some much-needed snow there while we're left with scraps of showers. it's going to be just blustery mainly saturday and then sunday we get some left overs also from the storm as it mainly hits the sierra, once again. up to a foot of snow possible there. while we will receive drum roll please a couple 0.01 of an inch of rain. quite a let down, isn't it? at least it is 10 cooler and stay rather cool and brisk all the way through the weekend. reggie and kumasi.
