presidency. president trump doesn't speak tonight but through tweets -- >> on the dates one other big headline out of the trump administration, the president's chief of staff tested positive for covid-19. he was just at campaign headquarters tuesday. here is a look at where the electoral college stands right now. 270 votes are needed to win. biden has 253. trump has 214. six states have yet to make a final call. vote counting is still underway. matt boone has the latest. >> reporter: all eyes were on wilmington, delaware as joe biden took the stage, still confident in his chances. >> we are going to win the race with a clear majority and the nation behind us. >> reporter: it was not his call to make. >> the tallies are not just numbers but represent votes and voters. men and women who exercised their fundamental right to have their voice heard. >> reporter: before biden hit

the stage donald trump tweeted this warning. joe biden should not wrongfully claim the office of president. i can make that claim also. legal proceedings are just now beginning. if biden manages to hang on to pennsylvania and the 20 electoral votes there he crosses the line to 270 and it's over. he could also take nevada and arizona. that would take him over the line as well. for president trump to win he must clinch pennsylvania and three other remaining states. >> some including the president spewing basis claims for fraud, what we have seen in philadelphia is democracy pure and simple. >> reporter: in pennsylvania biden was behind in the vote count until early this morning. in georgia state officials are disputing claims by trump that their ballot counting operations are biased. >> the election apparatus in georgia is run by democrats.

>> reporter: that is not true. >> the secretary is a republican. i'm a republican. the job of the elections director in this office is to count every legal vote. >> reporter: the big question is when will we know? in georgia officials say the race is going to a recount. in nevada we won't know new numbers until tomorrow. counting continues in arizona though new numbers won't drop until tomorrow as well and in pennsylvania, they are sorting through provisional ballots and they have been coming in more steadily, but for now we still have to wait. ama. >> all right matt, thank you so much. right on the heels of election night at least six people with ties to the president, including chief of staff have tested positive for covid-19. mark meadows was in close proximity to the first family and several trump campaign officials in the past few days. this is him at trump headquarters. that night he attended the white house election party.

it is not clear when he first tested positive. jonathan carl spoke about meadows during a special report earlier tonight. >> we have seen him on capitol hill not wearing a mask and every once in a while he will throw a mask on. but he is someone that seems to take a degree of pride in not wearing masks. >> the trump campaign battleground states director has tested positive along with four white house staffers and the white house hasn't responded to a request for comment. >> a few locations where gop support is strong. solano county has the largest group in the bay area. >> reporter: solano county is diverse, stretching from the bay deep into the central valley. >> we have 260,000 registered

voters, 60,000 are registered as republican. >> solano county is a republican stronghold because there is such a strong military presence with the air force base. >> reporter: approximately 30% of those voted by mail and 55% of those that went to the polls voted for president trump. >> i didn't realize that there were that many trump supporters here. >> reporter: at this grocery store parking lot it is not difficult to walk up to people and strike up a conversation and find trump supporters who are willing to talk. some even mentioned they have gotten backlash on social media for their views. >> i would never thought in a million years i would get the commentary on me just having a different opinion and me not being liberal. >> i supported trump. a lot of people say that is racist even though he mentioned he would donate $500 billion

towards black communities. >> they bad mouth president trump, he is our president. >> reporter: going into the weekend, there could be more visible reaction. >> i am getting calls from organizers in napa, solano, southern california. >> however the election ends up, i am not going to be protesting or be upset or yelling at people that supported biden. at the end of the day everybody wants the country to be better. if joe biden wins his vp, kamala harris, will be vacating her senate seat. she represented california since 2017. the governor picks the replacement and they already have names in mind. >> reporter: former vice president joe biden and kamala harris have not won the 270 electoral votes, but in california talks for filling the senate seat have begun. >> the race is already on to

replace kamala harris. >> reporter: under california law governor gavin newsom will have the power to choose senator harris' replacement. abc 7 news contributor says that he is considering multiple factors and the san francisco mayor london breed is one of the names that was mentioned. >> someone that has been with you in the past and someone you think will be with you in the future. >> in a poll published by the university of southern california, if the governor were to make history with his choice, which option should he consider? 14% said the first latino center in california. in this case, the options are -- >> secretary of state or the attorney general. >> reporter: over 1,200 registered voters participated in the poll and 29% said they wanted someone with experience

sandhya patel as a look at the forecast. >> ama, the storm that is coming through right now kicked up those waves. let's take a look at live doppler 7. it has been live heading into the santa cruz mountain. street level, we will get you in there. you will notice some moderate pockets of showers. santa cruz mountains it came down pretty good and then it eased up. the forecast showing you scattered showers coming through the bay area going into the morning. how much is falling, not a lot. .07. it is a level 1 on the storm impact scale. spotty showers, slight chance of thunder. breezy to gusty out there and the surf advisory until midnight. right now you will see the wave heights up to 18 feet arena. 22 feet earlier tonight. 15 feet in half moon bay.

or call during business hours. in the east bay tonight police and protesters clashed in brentwood after a resident hanged an effigy from his roof using a noose. the mannequin has been taken down, but it hasn't stopped demonstrations. >> reporter: protesters were met with heavy police present outside the home of eric harvey, the brentwood resident who hung an effigy from his roof reading sleepy joe, cheater and then friday, this scene. tense moments that turned physical between officers and protesters. about 100 people showed up for a march meant to bring attention to describe as blatant racism but the homeowner said he was

upset about what happened wednesday night. earlier sky 7 was overhead as the group first gathered. opening up the floor to those with any criticism of the city's officers and protesters continued to harvey's home. >> whoever he or she or whatever prop they are using, being hung is not okay because it brings a lot of trauma to the people of color. >> reporter: anticipating crowds abc 7 news captured brentwood businesses boarding up their store front. >> we are not here to riot. we are not here to break anything. we are here to bring awareness. brentwood is a city that hasn't protested enough. >> reporter: brentwood police say a crime was not committed, but the department forwarded the case to the secret service. about the heavy police service, with any protest they pre-plan

and they add additional staffing. one protester was arrested for battery on an officer adding others threw objects as the officers and that nobody was seriously injured. tonight we are tracking another surge of coronavirus cases. california reported more than 6,500 cases today, marking the state's largest single day increase since august. the johns hopkins university covid tracker shows nearly 122,000 cases in the united states, a record for new cases in a single day. worldwide the number of cases is at more than 49 million now. europe has been hit particularly hard with italy ordering a new lock down and france reporting a record number of cases. >> with cases on the rise, do we need a lock down in the u.s. like those in italy, france, the u.k. the answer may be in what we are doing right here in the bay area. >> if you are doing okay like we are doing in san francisco and the bay area, you can open up.

will only get colder. in the sierra we have been tracking snow. winter weather advisory above 5,000 feet where several inches of snow is expected. it becomes a winter storm warning above 4,000 feet. the snow level will be running until 4:00 p.m. sunday. up to a foot expected for the highest peaks. i would hold off if i were you. spotty showers. rough surf in the bay area. breezy to gusty conditions. early tomorrow morning, a couple of isolated showers showing up at 4:00 a.m. and it could switch over to snow flurries. and then pretty much all of saturday you are going to see a lot of fun. it will be a brisk day. sunday, the next wave comes through. could see a couple of showers in the morning between 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. and that system winds

good evening. you have to look long and hard to find any positives this season for the 49ers. jimmy garoppolo won't need surgery on his ankle. he limped off of the field on sunday, aggravating that troublesome ankle. latest diagnosis, jimmy g needs 4-6 weeks of rest and will be reevaluated with no surgery. possible he can make a return late in the season for a niners possible playoff push. you want to talk about day late and a dollar short. the 49ers had to hold out three players because of a positive test by bourne. looks like that was false positive. they were not allowed to play in the loss to green bay. would they have made a big difference, who knows. maybe, maybe not. we will never know. one day after cal had their game
