building a better bay area for a safe and secure future, this is abc7 news. >> now here is the host of "jeopardy!." >> legendary "jeopardy!" host alex trebek has passed away after a very open and public battle with stage four pancreatic cancer. he was 80 years old. good evening and thank you so much for joining us. i'm dion lim. alex trebek died at his home this morning surrounded by family and friends. he revealed in march of last year that he had been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer but continued to host "jeopardy!." abc news reporter. >> reporter: "jeopardy!" host alex trebek died at his home s friends. trebek presided over the answers and questions game show for 36 years. >> here is the host of

"jeopardy!'s" alex trebek. >> reporter: mourners remembering the beloved game show host at his star on the hollywood walk of fame. tributes began pouring in almost immediately. ken jennings who won a record 74 consecutive games on "jeopardy!" writing alex wasn't just the best ever at what he did. he was also a lovely and deeply decent man and i'm grateful for every minute i got to spend with him. also tweeting it was a great privilege to spend time with this man. and albert who appeard on an episode just this past week was moved to tears during a post-show conversation. >> i learned english because of you. and so my grandfather who raised me, i'm going to get tears right now, i used to sit on his lap and watch you every day. this is a pretty special moment for me. >> reporter: today writing he was overwhelmed with emotion. for the man who had all the

answers, trebek admitted he learned a lot about life in his full-ti final days. >> make the most of today. stop worrying about the future. just treat every day as a blessing. and enjoy it to the fullest. and try to be aware of when yo leave this earth that you've made a difference in the lives of other people. a positive difference. >> rt walex trebek was 80 years. >> such poignant words. abc7 news reporter luz pena has been speaking with several bay area contestants who say trebek inspired them. luz, so many fond memories here. >> so many stories. alex trebek revealed in march of 2019 that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. but he continued to host the show and bring smiles and laughter to many in the last year of his life.

trebek hosted over 8,000 of "jeopardy!." that's a record. that's the most of any tv game show. trebek had just turned 80 years old in july. and irng in the news of his passing shocked many this mornings and contestants of the show who said they grew up watching him. meeting him in person was better than they had envisioned. >> and i could actually kind of tell in the break that alex was kind of pulling for me. [ laughter ] he had liked my -- you know, the little story you do in the interview. and he enjoyed that. and he also liked my job at the time i was an irs agent. >> was he the person that you envisioned after watching him on tv for so long? >> no. i really didn't expect him to have as much of a sense of humor as he had. >> he celebrated 36 years with "jeopardy!." sony pictures has not announced

the american people about how he's going to make good on these campaign promises. >> president trump spent a second straight day on the golf course. he is angry and defiant vowing to challenge the election in court and has no plans to concede. however, sources say some of his family members and close advisers are fully aware that the election is indeed over. joe biden thanked a lot of people for their support during his victory speech last night. among them the transgender community. bay area activists certainly took notice. they said after years of being targeted by the trump administration, it is a new day. >> it was definitely a relief. >> reporter: transgender activist was watching president-elect joe biden victory speech on saturday. >> i'm proud of the campaign we built and ran. i'm proud of the coalition we put together, gay, transagenda, straight, latino, white.

a wreath was laid in the water to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. the memorial has been held every year at the trust since 2007. the first in conjunction with the service at pearl harbor. this is the first weekend of recreational crab season. people braved the blustery wind and chilly temperatures at the pacific pier this morning to lay down some crab pots. the season runs through july 30th of next year. the limit is ten crabs with the minimum size of 5 3/4 inches. i. coming up next, we are starting to see some signs of winter in the sierra. what it looks like after the latest snowfall, and how much exactly is on the ground. and i'm meteorologist drew tuma. get ready for the coldest night so far this season for a lot of

take a look at this. the snow is definitely piling up at tahoe ski resorts. it's now up to 7 inches. alpine meadows, which is what you see here, says it has 9 inches at the top of the mountain. squaw valley resort showed a time lapse video. and if you don't get too dizzy watching this, you can see how the snow is covering the valley below. and how about this. we even saw some hail today. abc7 news viewer john nguyen sent this in from milpitas. we have also gotten reports of hail in other parts of the south bay as well. kind of crazy to think that we went from 70 degrees even hotter just a week ago to now icy rain.

>> yeah. it's actually kind of nice to finally see some stormy weather return. despite the fact that the rain where you live probably didn't last all that long today, we had showers. we had hail. even a couple of lightning strikes as an energy moved through the bay area. let's show you live doppler 7 what's happening right now. all of that rain has pushed well to the south. in fact any showers associated with that front have really weakened. and they're approaching monterey at this hour. we are drying out, and the wet weather is done tonight. here's the bigger picture. live doppler 7 along with satellite over the past 6 hours. you can see that line of storms that started to the north and really dove south pretty quickly throughout the afternoon. you have the warm sunshine interacting with the cold air. and it instigated those storms to pop up. the snow is winding down in the sierra as well. but still some areas saw up to a foot of fresh powder in the

sierra. so some good news there. it is certainly chilly today. in san francisco we only reached a high of about 54 degrees, which is well below average. we're down to 50 in behind that front that moved through, the winds thankfully are weakening. those winds were gusting well over 25, 30 miles per hour throughout the day. and we do anticipate that those winds will just continue to weaken. so over the next 12 hours you can see by tomorrow morning we are talking about calm conditions. so tomorrow not nearly as windy as we were today. tonight though with weakening winds, clear skies, this is one of the coldest nights so far for a lot of us. and you can see why. it will drop to about 35 in livermore tonight, 38 in fremont.

39 in redwood city. a cold 42 in san mateo. 46 the city. even colder in the north bay dropping below freezing in santa rosa, 30 degrees. 35 that overnight low in napa. we do have a frost advisory in effect for the north bay valleys, essentially from mill valley to novato to santa rosa to napa. so you want to protect those plants and please bring in your pets. highs tomorrow, upper 50s to lower 60s. pretty close to where we were today. winds relaxed tomorrow and it's kind of a carbon-copy forecast the next couple of days. cold mornings, mild afternoons. and then it turns unsettled thursday, friday, and saturday. right now i think the best chance of finding wet weather will be on friday. it's a one on the storm impact. but that's something we'll be tracking as we get closer to the end of the week. >> all right, drew, thanks. getting to sports now with a preview of sunday football. hey, chris.
