milpitas, and we have reports of hail in other parts of the south bay as well. further north, san francisco saw some brief showers pass through this afternoon. our south beach tower cam caught a few raindrops while looking toward the bay bridge. with that, we say good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. let's get to drew tuma with a look at the weather conditions now. hi, drew. >> yeah. hi, dion. we're in store for a cold night. temperatures right now well into the 30s in a lot of cities. down to 37 in half moon bay. it's 38 in palo alto. 39 right now in fremont. napa dropped to 37 degrees. in fact, the north bay valleys will have some of the coldest temperatures overnight tonight. so it is for that fact a frost advisory will go into effect from 3:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning for mill valley up to santa rosa over to sonoma and napa. for temperatures, some areas below freezing. look at these lows, dropping to 30 in santa rosa tonight. a cold 37 in concord.

46 the overnight low in san francisco. this will be the coldest night in the city since april 7th. now, we're not only tracking the cold weather. we also have several chances for rain in the week ahead. we'll have that if the full accuweather forecast in a few minutes. >> we will be watching, drew. thanks. as temperatures drop, covid cases are on the rise. the already struggling restaurant industry now faces a new challenge. how to keep their diners warm and safe. the impact on the economy is one of the key things we're focused on as part of our efforts to build a better bay area. abc7 news reporter kris reyes talked to some restaurant managers and has this story. >> we have heaters coming on the way that will keep this whole, like, area right here. >> we also have more heat lamps on order. >> reporter: heat lamps to save the day. that's what restaurants like rise pizzeria and sixtos can tina are hoping for even as this normally busy street felt empty

on the first cool night of the season. lori thomas owns two restaurants in san francisco. she knows cool temperatures mean one thing. >> we saw 25% of the reservations we had like at 3:00 this afternoon cancel, right? you know, you can't blame anybody. it's cold. >> so these heat lamps aren't cheap. they can cost up to $1,500. it's not the perfect solution. so restaurants are begging their diners either bundle up or come on in. and if you are planning to dine indoors, i talked to a ucsf doctor for some tips. >> if you're choosing to dine indoors, you want a restaurant that's in a kind of new office building where there are a lot of air exchanges per hour. if you want to dine indoors, try to wear your mask as much as possible. reduce the duration of time. dine with your pod. if you go to the bathroom, make sure you keep your mask on. >> reporter: most restaurants in the bay area are still at limited capacity so there's plenty of social distancing.

running at full steam. >> he's going to, you know, begin transition work in earnest this week. he'll be making calls. he'll be making announcements to the american people about how he's going to make good on these campaign promises. >> president trump spent a second straight day on the golf course. sources tell aps news he is angry and defiant, vowing to challenge the election in court and has no plans to concede. however, sources say some of his family members and close advisers are fully aware that the election is indeed over. tonight, fans around world are eremembering alex trebek. the lod trebek, ever dedicated, was working up until about a week and a half ago. >> here he was battling cancer, pain, chemo, exhaustion, but you couldn't tell when the cameras rolled. he loved it, and that's why he kept driving himself to do it.

>> trebek died in his home surrounded by friends and family. more now on his extraordinary life. >> reporter: "jeopardy!" host alex trebek died early sunday at his home surrounded by family and friends following a battle with pancreatic cancer. trebek presided over the game show for 36 years. >> here is the host of "jeopardy!" alex trebek. >> reporter: mourners remembering the beloved game show host at his star on the hollywood walk of fame. tributes began pouring in almost immediately. ken jennings, who won a record 74 consecutive games on "jeopardy!" writing, alex wasn't just the best ever at what he did, he was also a lovely and deeply decent man, and i'm grateful for every minute i got to spend with him. another famous "jeopardy!" alum, james holzhauer was a contestant during trebek's cancer battle, tweeting, it was one of the great privileges of my life to spend time with this courageous

man. and albert thacker, who appeared on an episode just this past week, was moved to tears during a post-show conversation. >> i learned english because of you, and so my grandfather, who raised me -- i'm going to get tears right now. i used to sit on his lap and watch you every day. so it's a pretty special moment. >> reporter: today writing he is overwhelmed with emotion. for the man who had all the answers, trebek admitted he learned a lot about life in his final days. >> make the most of today. stop worrying about the future. just treat every day as a blessing and enjoy it to the fullest and try to be aware of when you leave this earth, that you've made a difference in the lives of other people, a positive difference. >> reporter: alex trebek was 80 years old. andrew dymburt, abc news,

washington, d.c. >> several bay area residents competed on "jeopardy!" over the years, including some this season. they told abc7 news reporter luz pena trebek was an inspiration. >> the host of "jeopardy!" alex trebek. >> reporter: today's category, tv show host for $400. >> he was part of the family when we ate dinner. >> who is the greatest game show host of all time? alex trebek. >> reporter: and as for those who made it to the "jeopardy!" stage agree on. how was it meeting alex trebek in person? >> surreal as always. so when he walks onto the stage, i'm like, he's a real person, you know. he's not just like a figure on-screen. >> reporter: bruce low was the winner of one of the last shows filmed this year. while trebek battled stage four pancreatic cancer. he recalls alex trebek putting him at ease before the show. >> bruce, eat 4,000 calories a day. is this true?

and i'm like, yeah, alex, it's true. >> reporter: i interviewed several bay area "jeopardy!" contestants and asked a question that alex trebek himself would have wanted to know. >> what's the most notable memory that you're going to take back to georgia with you regarding this tournament? >> i could kind of tell in the break alex was pulling for me. >> just as he's passing by, i said you're killing me, alex, over that. he basically said, suck it up and gave me a really firm slap on my side. >> my grandmother, who i never got to meet, "jeopardy!" was her favorite show. and so i got to have a little connection that i didn't have before. >> reporter: 37 years of memories of the man who always had the answers. in san francisco -- >> so long, everybody. >> reporter: -- luz pena, abc7 news. bay area organizations are

paying their respects by sharing memories of being clues on "jeopardy!." sj sharkie, the mascot for the san jose sharks, tweeted about once being in the nhl logos category. trebek was a hockey fan. b.a.r.t. also offered their condolence condolences. seasoned curly fries, with triple cheese and bacon or chili cheese. try my sauced and loaded fries. it's pretty delicious. the united states hit another milestone today with the pandemic. there are more than 10 million cases of covid nationwide. california is seeing its numbers rise as well, reporting more than 5,800 new cases. and queen elizabeth ii wore a mask in public for the first time. at least two members of the royal family have reportedly had the virus, prince charles and prince william. tomorrow president-elect joe biden will unveil his coronavirus task force. it's expected to be made up of 12 people and at least three co-chairs, something biden has repeatedly emphasized is how he'll rely on science when it comes to containing the pandemic. we spoke to abc7 news special correspondent dr. alok patel

watching joe biden's victory speech on saturday. >> i'm proud of the campaign we built and ran. i'm proud of the coalition we put together. >> reporter: biden's clear recognition of the trans community was huge. >> it was intentional. it was direct, and we all heard him. we are celebrating this moment for the fact that it is a historic moment. >> reporter: mahogany was recently elected to san francisco's democratic county central committee. >> first black trans woman elected in the state of california. >> reporter: the transgender community has been targeted by president trump. first a controversial military policy essentially banning trans individuals from serving. >> it's been a very confusing issue for the military, and i think i'm doing the military a great favor. >> reporter: there were also attempts to restrict access to health care and homeless shelters. >> the trump administration has systematically been dismantling the protections for transgender people and not just our basic human rights but also our very existence. >> reporter: activist aria sayid

winds were certainly an issue earlier today. they were gusting well over 30 miles per hour at times, especially close to the coast. once that rain moved out, the winds really lightened. you could see most areas the winds are registering as calm, and they will remain pretty calm for tomorrow as well. here's live doppler 7 along with satellite. the story we're tracking, you can see that line of showers that rushed through the bay area brought some lightning, some hail, a quick downpour, some gusty winds. even as we move into the sierra, brought some snow where there was a winter storm warning earlier this afternoon. it has really quieted down across california, and we are in store for a cold night across the golden state. in fact, freeze warnings and frost advisories stretch all the way from the central valley down into southern california. so many cities are going to see their temperatures drop into the 30s and 40s overnight tonight. right now we already have cities here in the bay area well into the 30s like half moon bay already down to 36 degrees. we're at 36 in san ramon.

37 in napa. a chilly 43 in hayward right now. down to 40, that current temperature in santa rosa. so under those clear skies, light winds, temperatures will just continue to plummet. in fact, we're seeing a lot of 30s on the board. fairfield dropping to 39. 35 in napa, dropping to 38 in redwood city. san jose, down to 39. 41 in oakland. 46 that overnight low in san francisco. we do have that frost advisory for the north bay valley starting at 3:00 a.m. early tomorrow morning, lasting until 9:00 a.m. for those morning temperatures, anywhere from 30 to about 37 degrees. so we'll likely find some patchy frost in areas of the north bay. good idea if you haven't, protect your plants and also bring your pets inside. they do not like the cold weather just as much as we don't like it. the 12-hour planner tomorrow showing that frosty morning first thing with temperatures in the 30s and 40s. a lot of sunshine tomorrow but temperatures still a little bit

below average. into the afternoon we'll max out in the mid-50s to lower 60s by about 4:00. so a close look at highs on your monday. this is a cool monday up there in terms of november numbers. we'll touch about 58 in san francisco after that chilly start in the north bay. santa rosa, 61. 60 in napa. we'll top out 60 in san jose. 59 in concord. the same in san mateo. about 62 the high in fairfield. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. you can see we have chilly mornings on the way not only tomorrow morning but also tuesday and wednesday morning. by thursday, what we'll find is a chance late in the day of some showers, but, dion, i think the best chance of finding rain this week will come on friday with showers likely. a slight chance early

decided to bring one of his favorite disneyland roller coasters to his home. this is a backyard version of the famous matterhorn. sean la rochelle says he started building the two-story coaster in march and finished in july. he tried to nail every little detail right down to the yeti. >> i always wanted to build a ride, and disney rides are special to me because they're themed. they tell a unique story. never really had the know-how or the time. you know, they talk about all the negatives of covid, but one of the benefits of covid is that you have all this time and you realize, you know, what can i be doing with all this time? >> i am so impressed. sean got a lot of help from his brother, and now they're actually thinking of building another ride. sean is currently going to graduate school for architecture and says this is one way to build his portfolio. with that, here's chris with a look at sports. >> coming up in sports, the 49ers off today but plenty of

the election. >> hey, william, my name is paul. i'm a volunteer with the pennsylvania democrats. >> reporter: this is grassroots on concrete, a mission district sidewalk where volunteers have taken up the ground game as they call it. democracy in action with 2020 foresight, they hope. >> my parents are immigrants from the former soviet union, so the idea of voting and the idea of being able to express what you want has always been a pretty critical thing for us in our household. >> calling voters is very stressful. >> are they nice? >> sometimes, but most often they are not. >> reporter: the man behind this call center has become an institution in the mission district, even at 31 years old. man manny put up the booth and lets democracy happen. >> if the elections are free and fair, then the institution of democracy still functions. if the election's tampered with, that's a different story. but the question is if he wins fairly, then the institution of this democratic government has

done its job. >> reporter: this journey through election week really began with a simple question. if you could write a letter to or have a conversation with democracy, what would you want to say at this moment in time? we put it out there on social media, got some interesting answers. among them, tired, anxious, hopeful, said one. i'd ask democracy to please come back, said another. and as for some of the people we've already met -- >> get your act together. >> we are in deep trouble. this is the final hour. >> reporter: indeed, literally. >> fire fauci! fire fauci! >> reporter: as they continued making calls to presidential candidates -- >> this guy doesn't answer. he talks about being a tough guy. >> reporter: and yet by then, most of us had already voted. >> are they signed and sealed correctly? >> reporter: that's james allen outside san francisco city hall. it's a temporary job and a

permanent commitment. >> vote. participate. >> reporter: here we found a uniquely san francisco scene with security tight, unless it wasn't. and we also found a sense of urgency. >> if you were to write a letter to democracy, what would be the first line of that letter? >> we are losing you. >> reporter: you make it sound like a love lost letter. >> absolutely. >> how so? >> i served this country in uniform. very proud of the democracy we have, and i can see it slipping away. >> reporter: but that is not only a one-party point of view. what is the first sentence? >> we, the people, under god. >> reporter: we've moved to marin county now where republicans make up only 14% of the registered voters. donna fief spent the day at the registrar's day working as an observer. >> what are you looking for? >> freedom, liberty. >> no, here. when you're looking, when you're observing. it says election observer. >> oh, i'm looking at the

process. they have an established process and we're looking to see if they're adhering to the process they set up. >> reporter: at the end of the day, it seems mistrust of the system does cut both ways. we finished with sarah naegle. >> dear democracy, you really need to do better right now. >> reporter: she writes a blog for the marin republican party. >> i believe democracy does work. i think at the moment, a lot of people have forgotten that we're really supposed to work together, though. it's become a winner take all scenario for a lot of people. >> you hate diversity. that's why you voted for trump. >> i think we lost a sense of belief in america right now. i think too many people, they're like people who are renovating a house and get board so they decide to tear the house down and build something new instead of accepting the fact that, you know, you just need to repaint it and do a little bit of work. >> reporter: on what the rest of the country considers to be a fridge-y leftist coast, this is

small or big. yes, it's your voice, and it should be heard. >> reporter: we will remember 2020 as the no-touchy election, when we used tongs to vote in some places, when exercising our constitutional right looked more like a scene from a science fiction movie. and yet with daily covid-19 infections reaching new highs, we turned out in record numbers. >> that we understand just how much is at stake in this election. we know that has hit people because it matters enough that folks are willing to risk their life to do it. >> reporter: and we did it in all kinds of spaces. voting and democracy is about empowerment. >> you have to fight for it. it is not given. it is a continuous exercise that's a practice. >> reporter: lily is a bolivian immigrant and now a force for latinos in technology. on this election day, she's getting out the vote on oakland streets. she's one of 32 million latinos eligible to cast ballots. is it in danger? >> right now i think we've seen the potential if we don't take care of it and if we take it for

granted. but i think if anything, democracy is more alive now than it's been before. >> reporter: hours later, novato, a watch event for marin republicans. many of them did not want to be on camera for fear of losing friends. and yet there were others who sought my camera out. when we asked who might be willing to speak, brook stepped forward. he expected a long night. >> i'm not entirely sure how this election is going to go. i don't really know what to anticipate, but regardless of the outcome, we have to respect the election. >> reporter: but it wouldn't be that easy. >> this is a fraud on the american public. this is an embarrassment to our country. we were getting ready to win this election. frankly we did win this election. we did win this election. >> reporter: it is worth noting that across the bay area, this election has generated a run on plywood. and in oakland, also a run on

a baby raccoon has the san francisco fire department to thank after it became wedged in a tree last night. neighbors called for help after hearing loud cries and screams coming from 15th and santiago avenues in the sunset district. this raccoon somehow wedged itself between branches of a large tree in the area, unable to get out. it took firefighters just a few minutes to free the animal. the raccoon is now in the hands of animal care and control. the fire department has named the raccoon freedom. they say because of what's been in the news these past few days. how fitting. and snow is piling up at tahoe ski resorts, now up to seven inches. alpine meadows, which you see here, says it has nine inches atop the mountain. squaw valley resort shared a time-lapse video of its tram on a test run. if you don't get too dizzy watching this, you can see how the snow is just covering the valley below. with that, let's get to abc7 news meteorologist drew tuma. hi, drew. >> hi, dion. yeah, we like to see that snow
