covid-19. this morning the names are out for biden's new task force calling on top doctors in the bay area to tackle the crisis. and the next big step, finding a covid-19 vaccine. one top company saying its version should be ready for review by the end of the month. good morning. it is monday, november 9th. hi, my friends. first of all, we are waking up to cold weather this morning. >> yes. >> it's not just me. it really is cold. >> it is. it really is cold. it's a nice change. it will be around for the better part of the week. maybe not frosty every morning like we're seeing up in the north bay where the national weather service issued a frost advisory, meaning to protect the pets and plants through 9:00. we have freezing cold temperatures in other areas, too. so the next time one of those is issued, maybe we'll try to protect other people also.

here's a look at your surface winds. they are calming down a bit. they're fast enough out there. we have some windchills. we're talking about feels like 31 in santa rosa and also in san ramon right now, feels like 32 in san jose. also in half moon bay, 32 in concord. so you definitely want to dress for that. all right. this afternoon a mix of high clouds and a lot of sunshine. temperatures around 58 to 61, except along the coast where we'll have mid to upper 50s. >> thank you. let's look at in video from overnight. this is new video in of flames from a huge fire at the georgia-pacific packaging warehouse in san leandro. you can see how big those flames are. with winds expected to get strocke stronger, firefighters are worried that winds could spark other fires. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is joining us live from san leandro with what it looks like now.

>> the big issue now is the smoke. we pulled into san leandro and wondered what on earth is going on. i think this is something people will notice today. there's not a building on fire here. there are boxes burning here. this is at the georgia-pacific building in san leandro. firefighters got the call around 10:45 last night. they say it was windy at the time and they were worried that the wind would push this fire to the building or carry embers away and start other fires. it's calm now. they got it under control. this is the georgia-pacific company on alvarado street in san leandro. firefighters say the vegetable boxes that the company manufacturers caught fire. several pallets of them. those are waxy on the inside, large and thick. so they're expected to burn all day. no injuries have been reported. no structural damage, no vehicles caught fire, just these

boxes, but so much smoke coming out of here. they don't know what started this fire. they do think that they are going to be out here all day.th while. live in san leandro, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. this morning president trump'ses leg legal team is heao court to allege voter fraud in the election. that is not preventing joe biden from getting to work. overnight joe biden announced a coronavirus task force. three doctors from ucsf are on that task force including dr. david kessler. he's been named one of three co-chairs. kessler served as fda commissioner from 1990 to 1997. two other ucsf doctors, robert rodriguez and eric goosby are on the board. >> we can trust a science driven

coronavirus task force to not spread mixed or rumors about unvalidated studies or unfound cures or treatments that might get peoples hope up for no reason. then that leads to bad outcomes. >> joe biden says he will rely on science when it comes to containing the virus. this morning the biden team is responding to a big announcement before pfizer's covid vaccine. data released overnight shows that the vaccine could be 90% effective in fighting the virus. >> pfizer says it is on track to file an emergency use application with u.s. regulators this month. they are encouraged by the study and found the vaccine effective in covid-19 without prior evidence of infection. officials have repeatedly said it's unlikely any vaccine will arrive before the end of the year. initial supplies will be limited.

joe biden released a statement reading in part that america is still losing over 1,000 people a day from covid-19 and that number is rising and will continue to get worse unless we make progress on masking and other immediate actions. that's the reality for now and for the next few months. today's announcement promises tto change that next year. pfizer's vaccine is one of ten possible candidates in late-stage testing around the world. moderna also hopes to file an application with the fda this month. >> thanks. today governor newsom set to give another update on the state's response to covid-19 as the number of cases continues to rise across the state. last week the governor skipped the update because of the election. he will speak at noon today and you can watch his update on abc7 and streaming on our news apps and abc7news.com. as temperatures drop covid cases are on the rise.

now to the loss felt around the country. we continue seeing alex trebek on "jeopardy" through christmas day. over the weekend he died of pancreatic cancer. the show's executive producer says trebek was working until about a week and a half ago. he served as the show's host for 36 years. for the man who had all the answers, trebek admitted he learned a lot about life in his final days. >> try to be aware of when you leave this earth, that you've made a difference in the lives of other people, a positive difference. >> i learned english because of you, and so my grandfather, who raised me -- i'm going to get tears right now -- i used to sit on his lap and watch you every day, so it's a pretty special moment for me now. >> alex trebek was 80 years old. ahead, it is being declared as a huge break through in the fight against hiv/aids. what researchers have just announced this morning and how it will change lives for

oh, my goodness. take a look at that. you got fall foliage color and then snow, not many more beautiful sights than this. yosemite blanketed yesterday with the fresh snow. the first snowfall of the season is always so exciting. look at those folks. so jealous they were there. we have freezing cold temperatures in places like redwood city and menlo park right now. our usual cool spots on the peninsula, everybody else in the upper 30s to low 40s until you get to san bruno and daly city.

expert on infectious diseases during the obama administration he was the founding director of the largest federally funded hiv/aids program and dr. robert rodriguez is professor of emergency medicine at ucsf where he works on the front line in the emergency department and the icu of two major trauma centers. former democratic presidential hopeful andrew yang tweeted over the weekend that he is moving to georgia to support democrats trying to win two u.s. senate runoffs in january. yang currently lives in new york. the 45-year-old ent ra nreprene says the best way to help joe biden is to secure a democrat a majority in the senate. kamala harris leaves open a senate seat for us and governor newsom is set to replace

some wonder if he'll go with another bay area leader. julian glover is live with this political chess game. hi, julian. >> yeah. there is quite the power vacuum that's been created in california now that the vice president-elect kamala harris is leaving the senate and heading to the white house. now governor governor newsom has a tough job of selecting a replacement now. names of prominent politicians, local names, well known in the bay area to statewide elected officials are being floated. a recent poll surveying california voters suggested bay area congresswoman barbara lee and congressman ro khanna were favorites. both are familiar faces in the bay area and they would be a strong alley for newsom in the senate. others are suggesting he might suggest a rising star in california like robert garcia who would make the first openly gay latino senator from the state or freshman rep katie porter known for grilling ceos in congress. according to a political article, bay area mayors libby schaaf and london breed of san francisco are also in the mix. >> the main thing you should look for politically is someone

who has been with you in the past and someone you think is going to be with you in the future. in other words, an ally and a voice in washington that you can go to when you need help. and help in your re-election down the line as well. >> something else to consider, newsom may appoint someone who currently has statewide office like secretary of state alex padilla or attorney general javier basera because that were allow him to name the next senator and statewide coveted office holder. the lobbying has already started with a flurry of calls and texts to the governor. newsom recently joking that people have been offering to pick up groceries for him, maybe even go grocery shopping for him. whoever it is will hold that senate seat until 2022. reporting live this morning, julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you. it's time for millions of californians to start thinking about getting medical insurance for 2021, there is that case

before the supreme court that could alter government assisted programs like cover california. >> open enrollment is kicking off for covered california. individuals and families can shine up to be covered for health insurance next year. some state health officials think there will be a surge in applications this year because so many people are unemployed due to the pandemic. applicants may receive from the state and federal government to cover some and possibly all of their premiums. this comes while the u.s. supreme court gets ready to hear a case tomorrow that could end programs like covered california that exist under the affordable care act. that case challenges the constitutionality of the law. a decision should come by june. the california attorney general will hold a press conference this morning reconfirming his commitment to keep the affordable care act intact.

mother nature helping our ski resorts by providing snow so they don't have to make as much. the snow is piling up at tahoe ski resorts like this one. alpine meadows says they have nine inches at the top of the mountain. squaw valley resort showed a time lapse video of its tram on a test run. they're so stoked up there. you can see how the snow is covering the valley below. congratulations to those folks. we need a good ski season if we can get out there and do it.

here's the look from the east bay, you can see it's 43 up there. we're in the 30s this morning. barely mid 50s at noon. mid 50s at 4:00. back into the 40s at 7:00. we're not the only ones freezing cold. about half the state under a freeze warning or a frost advisory. look at the afternoon temperatures, 50s until you get to southern california in the 60s. 30s and 40s, we just had record highs a few days ago of 70 in the mountains and 100 in palm springs. more snow for friday, saturday, sunday in the sierra. love to see that. >> thank you. developing news, firefighters have been busy overnight fighting a large fire that broke out in the east bay. we want to show you this new video. this is what firefighters have been up against. the fire is the at georgia-pacific building in san leandro. that's where we find amy hollyfield live with what we're learning this morning. amy? >> look how much smoke we're

dealing with out here. eight hours after this fire started they're still putting water on it. still an active scene here. people in san leandro and oakland expect to see smoke today. there's a lot of it. this looks worse than it eo of firefighters saw when they arrived last night. a huge fire happening at the georgia-pacific company on alvarado street in san leandro. the building was not on fire, it was boxes the company manufacturers. several pallets of them. those are waxy on the inside, large and thick. so they're expected to burn all day. they were very concerned about the wind happening at the time. they were worried that the wind was going to carry some embers and start other fires. it's calm now and they have gotten it under control. it's just a lot of smoke still. no injuries have been reported. no structures were damaged. no vehicles were burned. they don't know the cause of this fire.

pre-market trading this morning after pfizer released positive data about that covid-19 vaccine. world markets also up overnight. just like the start of the pandemic kroger says they're limiting customers to two items per trip for certain products to make sure everyone has access to what they need. in the bay area kroger owns stores like food for less and foodsco. the british army is adding fighting machines to its ranks. the head of the uk's armed forces says a quarter of its soldiers could be robots in the 2030s. he said machines could serve near the front lines during conflicts. the british army has only 73,000 trained soldiers of its expected 82,000. the robots could fill those holes or even expand the military and they won't have to depend on humans.

bit of wind out there. it's not as windey as it was earlier. below average temperatures the entire seven-day forecast. and a healthy storm is looking likely thursday into friday. keep our fingers crossed what we had yesterday was a couple hundredths, even though it was impressive with the hail and the lightning and the thunder. with the frost advisory, keep everything protected through 9:00. the national weather service says they will likely issue another one. will they include the east bay valleys, the south bay, parts of the peninsula experiencing freezing temperatures now? it's something we'll have to see. if you have frost this morning, expect to have frost the next couple of mornings. >> temperatures this afternoon, 58 to 72 degrees. mid to upper 50s along the coast. temperatures tonight, 29 in santa rosa. that sticks out. as does the 46 in san francisco. obviously you don't have to worry about frost here. here's my accuweather 7-day forecast, we're pretty much in the mid to upper 50s at the
