taking place near san francisco's alamo square. sky 7 is hovered over the scene minutes after a construction crew ruptured a 12-inch gas main. you're looking live what is happening. fire crews are standing by. you have a bunch of workers, p grg and e gathering. you're about to hear from a man who was evacuated from his home. >> there were police vehicles, a little commotion and then they came and rang the doorbell and asked everyone to evacuate immediately, there was a gas leak and that's as far as we know. >> sky 7 shows how close this is happening to san francisco's famed painted ladies, a string of victorian homes on side of alamo square. good afternoon. thanks for joining us.

i'm larry beil. >> i'm christian see. >> we're in a difficult situation and we got to keep pushing. >> the push to get people to wear masks and stay safe into the holiday season. this as california hits an unfortunate milestone in the fight against the pandemic. the state marked 1 million cases today according to data compiled by several news organizations. that includes people who have recovered, texas became the first state to hit a million cases yesterday. more than 18,000 californians are died. in the bay area, there are more than 130,700 cases. alameda county is causing further reopenings as it anticipating moving to the red tier. daily new cases for 100,000 people are up to 4.9% from the county's low of 3.4. there is also a steady increase in hospitalization. officials say if current trends continue, the county may be put back into the most restrictive tier and that is purple. spiking numbers have counties in

the bay area hitting pause in their reopenings. the question is this going to be enough as we head into the busiest holiday months of the year. kris reyes talked to two doctors on the front lines and are issuing a warning, get complacent and we could lose the gains we've made in the course of the last nine months. >> as the virus becomes more prevalent in the community, the chances that person sitting next to you at a dinner table or next to you in a store is infected is higher than it was a month ago. we got to be super careful. >> reporter: new stats could show thanksgiving could see the most air travel since the pandemic was declared. united added 1400 new flights and christmas and new years's celebrations, dropping temperatures driving people indoors as numbers spike in the bay area and all over the country. it's a formula public health officials are extremely worried about especially considering everyone's favorite holiday

activity. >> sit for many hours together with masks off because they're eating. that's a combination of all the things that are about as worrisome as you can imagine. >> you kind of get behind the eight ball and you get to the point of no return and it's once you start increasing, you increase exponentially. >> reporter: in the bay area doctors are on the lookout of spikes because of halloween and elections. the worries people are getting complacent as the virus remains as contagious. >> the problem is the virus doesn't care. it's the same virus as it was all along. >> reporter: the other warning from the doctors we talked to is this so-called third wave could be worse and last longer than the previous two, which lasted about two months. one reason is that the holidays could bring more people into the bay area traveling from covid-19 hot spots. >> the thing that keeps me up at night is over running our hospitals with patients and not having enough staff to take care

of them, enough icu beds. >> reporter: the doctor must remain vigilant and remember nine months into the pandemic, we have a long way to go and a lot more to lose. >> the good news about vaccines means that if we hunker down for another six or eight months, we may be in a much, much better place next year. >> reporter: kris reyes, for abc 7 news. some of you are counting on covid tests before thanksgiving and we warned you that could be challenging. in san francisco, city testing sites at the embarcadero are fully booked. if you need a test today, we know a place you can get one with little to no line. amy hollyfield was in fremont today where testing comes with a little fun. >> reporter: lab workers are set up and ready to go at the bart station. the only thing they need is more patients. this is the third day of the free covid test site and hope as many people as possible will take advantage of it. >> the last two days that we have done here, we've tested around 140 and 160 patients.

i'm hoping to hit that number again today. >> reporter: bay area community health arranged the clinics when alameda county moved into orange figuring as businesses reopen, cases would likely go up and testing would be crucial. >> the important piece i want to say after the mask is the testing because a lot of asymptomatic cases of young people, they don't feel symptoms and can be positive and spread the disease across. >> reporter: once eve notable difference is how covid test sites changed. this has a d.j. creating a fun environment. quite a contrast to when the pandemic started and sites were quiet and tense. patients who have been tested more than once noticed the change. >> it was very tense. i was really afraid. everybody was like so serious and today coming here, hearing the music and people extremely friendly was -- it put me at ease, yes. >> we have definitely been enjoying the music out here. the chief medical officer told me that is bedesign. they wanted to create an

environment where people felt relaxed and comfortable, not scared. a amy hollyfield. staffers with the santa clara county office of education staged a rally. they have a rush to reopen schools. members of the service employees international union called on the officials to implement three things before any decision is made to reopen. first, ensure appropriate staffing for in person and distance learning classrooms. second, allow workers to telecommute when their job duties allow them to do so and provide comprehensive health and safety training for all workers. >> it's hard to ask for help when you don't know what you don't know. i thought i'd asked all the necessary questions until i went to work the first day and realized i didn't know how i was supposed to disinfectant the toys in beach and water, how long are they supposed to be there? >> the union members were flanked by mock body bags to dramatize their desire to be safe. we've reached out to the santa

clara county office of education but have yet to hear back. a new study compares state and federal responses to the pandemic and concludes an early nationwide mask mandate would have been the number one saver of lives. the study by economics and statistics was done by santa clara university professor and others. they found had a federal mask mandate gone into effect in mid march, mid april between 90,000 and 180,000 deaths could have been prevented. in san francisco today, dozens of homeless residents were provided with free masks. the salvation army teamed up with mask manufacturer halo life. for every mask sold, they donate another to organizations that serve the homeless. you can see where your county stands with the reopening tracker now on abc7news.com. to the south bay, sky 7 flew above santa clara after a sink hole opened up and damaged at least two cars right near levi

early evening, it will be on the south bay, the east bay, the peninsula and still raining in some parts of the north bay. rainfall estimates indicate that it will be a wide range of rainfall totals anywhere from just a few hundredths of an inch in some places like redwood city to a quarter of an inch or more. good news is there will be sunshine this weekend and i'll have the seven-day forecast coming up later, larry and kristen. >> see you in a few minutes. a group of people that saw an older woman getting robbed did not just speak up, they jumped right into action. abc 7 dion lim brings us the story of some china town good samaritans working together with sfpd to make an arrest. >> when you see someone especially like an older woman like yelling for help. >> you kind of just -- >> help. >> react. >> reporter: during a routine trip to china town to buy groceries, lily and tom house knew they had to spring into action when they witnessed a

young man snatch a cell phone right out of an hand. >> we saw a man running with something in his hand and i said should we go after him? she said heck yeah. >> reporter: they chased him and when tom, a 25-year service member jumped out and gave chase on foot. >> i turned and said hey, give me the phone back. he turned and looked and his eyes got really big and he turned and threw the phone at me. >> reporter: also witnessing the incident, a u.s. army veteran and rob low, founders of the united peace corps. a neighborhood watch group formed at the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak. they stood by to console the victim and then jumped in themselves. >> we chased him down all the way to murphy ally and the police officers and robert and i teamed up together and we chased the thief down. >> reporter: thanks to community team work, sfpd arrested a suspect across from the china

incentiveize homeless residents. >> to be able to provide a pathway for homeless residents, our neighbors to be part of the slution, to be able to help us clean the community and beautify our city in a way that makes us all collectively proud. >> those who pick up trash get $4 per bag up to $20 per day. city officials say there are restrictions on what can be purchased with the cash cards. all right. now to a big find near scotts valley this morning. would you believe big foot? well, maybe not the real big foot. this guy was spotted in the road way near glen canyon and green hills road. these photos were posted on the scotts valley police department facebook page. according to officers, big foot was a little banged up. a it appears he doesn't move around that much so he can't get away, but he'll be returned to his home at the big foot

jose sharks are raising concerns about a slate of massive development projects right near the sap center, the shark tank they say can impact their viability and success in the downtown area. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen spoke with the sharks' president about the team's concerns. >> as more details surrounding google's downtown west development are beginning eme e emerge, the san jose sharks are asking the public to weigh in about the future of the massive project adjacent to the sap center. >> the arena might be infeasible at some point in the future. it might be impossible to host a concert or hockey game and if that were to come true, then we would be forced to leave. >> reporter: jonathan beggar, president of sharks sports and entertainment is raising concerns about street network access, parking challenges and construction impacts related to san jose's station area plan, which is set to transform 250 acres over the next two to three decades. but as the city starts to layout

its plans, some say more must be done to ensure that projects are staggered to avoid congestion. groups such as the san jose downtown association say they're excited for the future but also be keeping a watchful eye on the process. >> there is going to be a lot more people, customers, traffic. we want them to be able to circulate and move between all the businesses. we want it to work. >> reporter: local reconfigured as officials focus on transit oriented development with housing, commercial and open space. progress can be painful but say if done properly, the sharks could have a lot to gain. >> we have to change. we have to be a forward looking 21st century city. >> reporter: the mayor says he's confident the city and teal will be able to work out any differences in the long run. >> the ability for us to bring thousands of sharks' fans in the form of bart riders, form of local workers and new residents right to their front door is something that any professional

we have rather uniform temperature readings in most locations. 62 right now at oakland and mountain view and san jose, 59 gilroy and 54 half moon bay and looking toward the golden gate, alcatraz. 61 up north, that vmid vamid vmd and concord and 62 livermore and look down into the bay from tam, rain alivrrives and spread rain to other parts of the bay area. sunnier, drier and milder. the approaching storm ranks one on the abc 7 storm impact scale. light to moderate showers for most areas. we'll see up to a quarter of an inch and it will certainly be a wet evening commute. be careful on the roadways there. there is a forecast animation by late morning where it will spread across much of the north bay and by midday into early afternoon, rain through the golden gate across san francisco to the east bay, parts of the

peninsula and then down to the south bay and the remainder of the east bay peninsula in the early evening hours. once again, it will probably likely be a wet commute tomorrow evening. tonight, overnight low temperatures will be mainly low to mid 40s except in the inland chilly valleys where lows will drop into the upper 30s. tomorrow's highs not so high at all. only mid to upper 50s in the forth b north bay and low 60s in other locations. looking ahead a bit, rainfall totals as i said will vary from a few hundredths of an inch, san mateo, redwood city to a quarter of an inch in hayward, oakland, san francisco and perhaps over a quarter of an inch in wetter locations in the north bay. and king tides are coming higher than normal. high tides in the area and saturday phenomenon can sometimes cause flooding in low
