is growing every day. chris ryes talked with two doctors on the front lines of the battle who are worried about losing ground. >> as the virus becomes more prevalent in the community, the chances that person sitting next to you at a dinner table or next to you in a store is infected is higher than it was, let's say, a month ago. we've got to be super careful. >> new stats show thanksgiving could see the most air travel since the pandemic was declared. united airlines just added 1400 new flights. add to that christmas and new year's celebrations on horizon, dropping temperatures driving people indoors as numbers spike in the bay area and all over the country. it's a formula public health officials are extremely worried about especially considering everyone's favorite holiday activity. >> sit for many hours together with masks off because they're eating. that's a combination of all the things that are about as worrisome as you can imagine. you kind of get behind the eighth ball and you get to the

point of no return and it's once you start increasing y y increase exponentially. >> they are looking for spikes because of halloween and elections. the worries people are getting complacent as the virus remains as contagious. >> the problem is the virus doesn't care, and it's the same virus as it was all along. >> reporter: the other warning from the doctors we talked to is the so-called third wave could be worse and last longer than the previous two, which lasted about two months. one reason is that the holidays could bring more people into the bay area traveling from covid-19 hot spots. >> the thing that keeps me up at night is over running a hospital with patients and not having enough staff to take care of them, enough icu beds. >> reporter: doctors say you must remain vigilant and remember nine months into the pandemic, we have a long way to go and a lot more to lose. >> the good news about vaccines

means if we hunker down for six or eight months, we may be in a better place next year. >> of course, coronavirus doesn't care who you are or where you live. we're all at risk, but the risk level varies. so let's take a look at the situation where you live. we'll start in the south bay. santa cruz county just moved backwards from the orange to the red tier this week currently santa clara county is in the orange tier. staffers with the santa clara county office of education staged a rally this morning to protest what they say is a rush to reopen schools. members of the services employees international union want more safety measures. a spokesperson provided a statement in response to an abc 7 news inquiry saying health and safety remain the top priorities. fewer than 10% of students have gone back to in person class. along the peninsula, san mateo is in the orange tier. san francisco is the only bay area county in the yellow tier with the fewest restrictions, however, san francisco is going

to shut down indoor dining after tomorrow night because case counts are rising. also, indoor gym use will be more limited. fewer people will be allowed in movie theaters and any high schools looking to reopen will have to wait. in the east bay, contra costa county moved from orange to red this week and alameda might do the same next week. alameda county announced today any future reopenings are on hold. case rates are rising so rapidly officials aren't ruling out the possibility of proactive are things where gs that we people are actually taking off their mask indoors and that's going to be by in large things where people are eating. and so, you know, certainly, indoor dining is a possibility. >> the north bay is home to our only county in the bay area in the purple, worst tier. that's sonoma county. napa is orange but may go to red. and there is a lot of frustration in sonoma county because it can't improve the

standing even though test numbers actually have been improving. and now the county thinks it knows why. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman explains it could lead to a testing recount. >> another day, another covid testing site in sonoma county. they're still in the purple tier here highly restricted and residents are still concerned. >> i don't have any fever, and i'm hoping it's going to be negative. >> i want to see if i'm okay because there are too many people dead. >> reporter: the county will test another 200 people at this popup site today part of an effort to improve status with the health department. it may be stuck to the purple tier due to the countinger r er >> there was a company doing a significant amount of tests here in sonoma county were not getting counted in sacramento. >> we're talking about 20,000 tests in all.

they include 2500 a month through no fault of the kascasi the results never made it into the health department's database. their recounting two weeks of the last testing and resubmitting. >> we weren't getting the benefit we thought we should have for actions we were taking. >> reporter: in sonoma county, covid-19 has taken a terrible economic toll. it cost 20,000 jobs and more than a billion and a half dollars in lost income. >> normally, we would have the patio full and probably about half of the inside. >> reporter: at the sky lounge in sonoma county 5ir7, steve is fortunate to be working. 48 of his co-workers lost their jobs here due to covid. it is california's only commercial restaurant in an airport that cannot have inside dining. jim who owns the place is ham strung by that purple tier. >> right now day to day and weather related. we're hanging on by threads.

whoa. >> isn't that crazy? u.s. stocks finished lower but you wouldn't know it from the characters ringing the bell celebrating sony's playstation 5. the tumble comes from the federal reserve chair that says there is a long road to economic recovery but a fun scene there on the stock market. the dow was down 317. the nasdaq down 76. and the s&p 500 down 35. challenging day on wall street. an additional 709,000 americans filed for unemployment claims last week. that's according to newly released data. difficult time on main street, as well. it's the lowest number since march but still very high by historic standards.

kennedy. in san francisco a construction crew hit a gas main and sparked this fire. the flames did not spread to any buildings. this afternoon's mishap injured at least one person and triggered evacuations for nearby homes. pg&e crews have been working to seal off the leaking 12-inch main so people can return to their homes. >> like major cities across the country, oakland seen an uptick in crime in the past six months especially when it comes to homicides. the crime surge comes amid a reimaging of the police force. laura anthony spoke with the chief and those witnessing the fallout of the violence firsthand. >> every funeral home got youngsters in it. >> reporter: todd has been a coach and funeral director for decades. he's seen a crisis, especially among young people within a pandemic. >> ain't nothing for them to do, it's easy to get misled into getting involved into something you don't need to be in, right now is killing.

threatening issues. >> reporter: while the commission continues its work here to reimagine the department, a new poll shows among oakland residents their trust in their police force decreased but they don't necessarily want fewer of them on the street. >> i say keep the police where they are and community leaders that know these kids. >> reporter: in oakland, laura a group of people that saw an older woman getting robbed jumped into action. a story of china down good samaritans working together with san francisco police to make an arrest. >> when you see someone especially like an older woman like yelling for help. >> you kind of just react. >> help. >> during a routine trip to china town to buy groceries, lily and her partner tom house knew they hod to spring into action when a young man snatched a cell phone from an elderly

woman's hands. >> we see a gentleman running by with something in his hand. i asked lily should we go after the guy? he said hell yeah. we took off of him. >> reporter: they chased the man in her car down stockton and a couple blocks later when tom, a 25-year service member jumped out and gave chase on foot. >> i turned and i said hey, give me the phone back. i could tell it was a phone. he turned and looked and his eyes got big and he turned and through the phone at me. >> reporter: also witnessing the incident founders of the peace corps. they stood by to console the victim and jumped in themselves. >> we chased him down to turk murphy ally and we teamed up together and chased the thief down. >> reporter: thanks to community team work, sfpd arrested a suspect across from the china town police station. this image taken by one of the good samaritans. police tell me they are

now and trailing edge of it will swing through the bay area and bring us our anticipated much anticipated rain. let's move along and take a look at the next image here and let me get my computer to cooperate. here is a live view from the abc 7 explorery camera. currently 53 here in the city, 57 oakland. we got 51 degrees out mountain view and san jose 57 and 51 gilroy and 50 half moon bay. from emeryville, this say lovely view. 52 degrees in santa rosa and napa 48. chilly. 50 thnavodo and looking across e embarcadero from the rooftop camera, we have dry conditions at the moment and these are forecast features. rain will arrive in the north bay late tomorrow morning. then the rain will be spreading to all areas of the bay area by the afternoon and evening. and we can expect sunny and warm this weekend. the approaching storm ranks one

on the abc 7 storm impact scale. light intensity but there could be some brief periods of downpours. wet evening commute tomorrow and breezy to gusty at times. here is the forecast animation. notice by 10:00 tomorrow morning, wet weather will be spreading across the north bay then by early to mid afternoon, look for wet weather pushing south of the golden gate across san francisco to the east bay down into the peninsula and by late afternoon into early evening, it will be pretty wet across the entire region so once again, we'll probably have some wet and slippery roadways for the evening commute and there will be snow in the sierra, winter weather advisory will be in effect from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. tomorrow. we expect three to six inches of snow above 6,000 feet and up to 9 inches over the peaks. travel may be difficult if you think of going out that way. even if you're not thinking of going that way, travel will be difficult back in the bay area, rainfall totals will range from a few hundredths of an inch up

to about .3 or more in others. moving back to tonight's conditions before the rain arrives, look for low temperatures mainly in the upper 30s and the inland valleys so it will be chilly especially in the north bay. closer to the bay into the coast, it won't be quite so chilly with lows in the low to mid 40s. highs tomorrow upper 50s on the coast. up to about 60, 61 degrees right around the bay shoreline. inland areas the fornorth bay c and chilly with highs in the 50s and other inland areas will see low to mid 60s tomorrow and we expect king tides saturday through tuesday. when we have higher than normal high tides we often have localized flooding in low lying areas like the park and ride area in mill valley so baear tht in mind. here is the seven-day forecast. the weekend, we can expect mainly sunny skies saturday and sunday and a nice warmup begins

a santa rosa mother says the school lunches being sent home are simply not safe to eat and it's a story for the i-team. >> reporter melanie woodro spoke with the school district and it's apologizing. >> reporter: rotten apples and molding carrots. >> i'm afraid. >> reporter: this is what jessica picked up from the santa rosa unified school district lunch program. >> that puts us in a difficult position as a family because we're struggling and it's a difficult year. we cannot easily replace the items. >> reporter: she and her husband are out of work due to covid-19. 7-year-old asher and 4-year-old elionna qualified. she is also mom to 2 month old aurora. she worked in the food and beverage industry. >> food safety is so important. we would never allow for this in a restaurant i would work in and

it's heartbreaking to consider that someone would allow for this for our children. >> reporter: ed burke is the school's child nutrition services director. >> we find this is aun ever is and we have to do better. we want to extend our apologies. >> reporter: when she contacted the school district, they immediately began an inspection. they discovered pats of produce coming up with use by date were enter mingled by use by. >> given the food in the photo someone can see it and say this is not okay and set it aside. >> reporter: that however, did not happen. burke says they are providing additional training to staff and doing additional spot checks. >> we feel coonfident we can prevent this from happening again. >> reporter: in the past she's thrown out prepackaged items that look to be freezen, thawed and refrozen. >> after it happened so many times in a row, it became clear

>> fauci believes vaccines will start to be distributed in december and become widely available in the spring and early summer. he once again stressed the importance of wearing a mask, distancing and continuing to do activities outdoors even as we head into winter. a new study compares various state and federal responses to the pandemic and concludes an early nationwide mask mandate would have been the number one saver of lives. the study by economics and statistics experts was done by a santa clara university professor and others. they found had a federal mask mandate went into effect in mid march and mid april, between 90,000 and 180 dea,000 deaths c have been prevented. >> that time period of march and april is providing scientific evidence that could solve a completely different health problem, air pollution. one of the proposed solutions is electric cars. it's the environmental trade off we make every day. the bay area's popular commuter

corridors are also air pollution allies but a study is pointing out the power of a clean solution. >> yes, so we've been thinking about this as a model for the electric car. >> reporter: he and his team spent a decade building a network of co 2 sensors scattered they can measure carbon dioxide and other pollutants and that a historic opportunity as the bay area began the covid-19 shelter in place. >> we saw this incredible change that occurred the amount of co 2 released to the atmosphere in the bay area was 25% lower in that period than just before the lockdown six weeks before. >> reporter: he says the purple peaks represent the daily spikes during the six-week run up while the green areas show the drop during the shelter in place but he believes the rubber really meets the road in another set of images. they show what the drop looked

crashes. untrash east bay is a volunteer group. we meet once a week. we have 350 members. 20 to 25 people show up at any one of our cleanups. so our mission is to clean wild land areas and to build community and ultimately, to stop the flow of new trash from flowing into the environment. in recent years, i think all of us noticed how bad the trash is getting, and at some point, i just decided something had to be done. since the beginning of the year, we removed 1250 bags of trash, appliances and mattresses and so on. this is aquatic park. we have six projects now and this is the second major one. the first was grizzly peak where we took out 450 bags of trash over those eight months and put in place a whole series of different interventions that reduce the amount of new trash coming into that environment dramatically. this is how we care for these

for that. >> so here we are, it's thursday night and the cal football team does not know if they are playing arizona state on saturday. it's two days away. cal's opener was called off because of one positive covid test and the entire defensive line was put into quarantine. the game with asu they may move it to sunday but the sun devils cancelled their practice today believed to be covid related. who knows what is going on there at all. we know stanford is playing colorado on saturday. they're still not sure if quarterback davis mills will be allowed to play. he was held out of the opener after a positive covid test. they have been monitoring four covid related tests this week and waiting for the county to tell them who will be allowed to actually play. >> we don't have any positive tests so we're, you know, we're continuing on but waiting on the county to make a decision and communicate with us.
