california with the coronavirus. the state reported nearly 11,000 diagnosed cases today, the highest since early august. the positivity rate continues to rise with the 14-day rate jumping to 4.4%. it was just 4% on friday. that number is a strong indicator of the transmission rate of the virus. and nearly 3,700 people are in the hospital getting treated for covid-19 and about a thousand of them are in the icu. the spike in covid cases is increasing the demand for testing here in the bay area. but some testing sites are reaching capacity. according to abc 78 news reporter cornell barnard, some neighborhood advocates are calling for more testing sitsz to handle load. >> reporter: across california the need for covid testing is in high demand. in l.a., hundreds waited for hours in their cars for a covid test, the lines grew longer into the night, in the bay area you could wait days to get an appointment. there are 19 city-run testing sites in san francisco, like

this one, here at pier 30 on the embarcadero. with the surge in covid cases, many are reaching capacity. >> the lines are getting longer and longer. >> reporter: the health committee chairman from the latino task force says demand is unbelievably high at this test site in the mission. recently 500 people are getting tested every day. >> we are here to service the latino community but not exclusive to and so we take care of the folks that show up that need that test. >> reporter: he believes the city needs more testing sites. >> we need a vast amount of low barrier testing sites throughout san francisco, easy access, same-day walkup in all the neighborhoods, where we know that there is an increase in cases. >> san francisco currently does more testing than any other city in the nation. >> deputy health director dr. navina baba says the city is doing more than 5,000 tests per day. many who are lining up are not high priority.

>> people exposed or have symptoms or essential workers. if people have other reasons to get tested they could go to your primary doctor. >> reporter: traveling for the holiday holidays. the city closed one testing site? en is oma but plans to open a new site on alameny boulevard next week. a party led to ten covid-19 cases at uc davis. ten fraternity students are quarantined and uc davis says an additional fraternity member tested positive on thursday and went to his parents home to quarantine. a party with up to 20 people, when ten other people the school believes became infected. some say students should be more responsible. >> partying in these times is kind of selfish so i don't understand why people are doing it because if we all stayed inside or quarantined and wore masks and didn't party, we could get out of this quicker.

>> uc davis has been doing a good job maintaining the case numbers. it's crazy to hear. >> nine of the infected are in designated quarantined apartments. one is staying in the fraternity house. this past week more than half the country reported a record number of hospitalizations because of covid-19. the hospitals are feeling the pinch. with president trump's administration currently not working with joe biden's transition team, the vice president-elect is taking matters into his own hands. this has one top health official concerns. >> reporter: cases are on the rise in almost every state according to the covid tracking project, 163,000 cases diagnosed in the past 24 hours. 1,321 new deaths and more than 69,000 americans currently hospitalized. the health care system feeling the strain. >> trying to find staff and get people from other units to help us out. many days you get in your car and cry.

>> washington's governor jay inslee announcing new restrictions to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. >> indoor social gatherings from people outside your home are prohibited. outdoor gatherings limited to no more than five people. restaurants and bars closed for indoor city. >> reporter: amarillo, texas, ordering mobile morgues. >> there are more patients than beds in the hospital. we expanded the morgue capacity at the hospitals with the mobile trailer and requested a second while we wait for a portable morgue unit. this is real. >> reporter: on friday, president trump predicting pfizer will soon receive emergency use authorization for its vaccine and could be available to the general population by april but the trump administration is not working with president-elect joe biden's team. dr. anthony fauci said it could be a problem. >> almost like passing a baton in a race. you don't want to stop and give it to somebody. you want to keep going. that's what transition is.

it certainly would make things more smoothly. ." >> i hope nothing interferes with operation warp speed. it is a matter of life and death for thousands of people" calling on the white house to make contact with joe biden. a black lives matter event in dublin that received online threats last week went on peacefully today. >> we can't have peace if we don't honor one another. honoring one another means we listen to one another. >> the city approved sign gashden for justice hosted outside the dublin civic center, received threats from mike grant, a local gun business owner on facebook last week. the owner posted a picture of the 17-year-old organizer denell mcmahon and called for counter protesters. the turnout ended up being larger than expected. >> it's a shocking for me to drive up right now. i knew there was going to be a lot of people there.

i couldn't imagine it. it was great to see that there are so many supporters on the movement. >> grant has since apologized after receiving backlash for his post. mcmahon says is he willing to meet and teach him more about the blm movement. in san francisco, dozens marched to call on the board of supervisors to defund police and reject a contract with the officer's association. >> hey, hey, ho, ho, these racist cops have got to go. >> that group marched from the police officer's association to city call this afternoon with organizers calling a recent contract with the association racist. "examine the examiner" says it does not reduce the size of the force, but reducing the size of the budget. business owners in walnut creek are cleaning up graffiti saturday, anti-police statements and calls for justice. organizers of last night's protest called it a no justice,

no peace demonstration. videos showed some physical confrontations between protesters and counter protesters. we have we have reached out to walnut creek police to see if any arrests were made. a family of three was rescued after their small boat capsized near alcatraz island. san francisco firefighters brought that family safely back to shore at the hyde street pier. a san francisco fire boat got to the family right in time after their small boat tipped over. family members yelled out to bystanders onshore who then called 911. everyone seemed to be in good spirits after being rescued. >> a nice sunday afternoon and then my dad is not very good with boating so he kind of tipped the boat over, it filled with water and then we got out of the boat. >> glad to see everyone's okay. everyone was wearing life vests at the time. the family's small boat was flipped back up and towed to

tributes are pouring in for the long-time owner of ricky's sports theater and grille in san leandro. sports fans dropped off bouquets and flowers and shared fondest memories of ricky ricardo. he died this weekend of complications from alzheimer's disease. ricky's was a favorite hangout for all sports fans especially for the raider nation. >> the raiders love this year for vegas and always felt comfort knowing we still got ricky's's, this is our spot and to see ricky. so it's hard. >> this is like my second home so he's treated me with nothing but open arms. he's pretty much accepted all fans from all different teams. >> so many memories. the bar is closed because of covid-19 restrictions, and it is in danger of shutting permanently. a go fund me page has been set up to raise money so it can survive. ricardo was 75 years old.

a place where people go to explore their love of music is files for bankruptcy. guitar center is filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy but plans to stay in business. it has about 300 stores nationwide and more than 200 music and arts stores. bay area locations include san jose, and san francisco, along with san mateo and emeryville. guitar center handles instrument sales, rentals, lessons and repairs. a man who broke into a pizza shop in fullerton apparently couldn't resist the temptation. police shared this surveillance video of, yes, the unidentified man who they say broke in and actually made himself a pie during the heist. he is seen weighing out and kneading the doe wearing food safety gloves. the pizza isn't all he took. the stole the cash, tablets and delivery car. the suspect has since been arrested. cannot make this stuff up. for sale, one california

home ownership in california, that is one thing. how about town ownership? for $2.75 million you can purchase nipton, the entire town. desert town is near the nevada border off interstate 15, historic railroad town with 20 people to live there full time. it made headlines in 2017 when a cannabis company bought it for $5 million and planned to turn it into a retreat. the original owners had to take it back, after the plans fell through. i don't know what we'd do with
