sky. good evening and thank you so much for joining us. i'm dion lim. that building is located right in the heart of downtown berkeley on university avenue. we have new details, tonight, about the challenge firefighters faced and the scramble to get those nearby to safety. matt boone joins us live where fire crews are still hard at work. matt. >> good evening, dion. yeah. as you can see, behind me, firefighters still blasting water onto the seven-story apartment building under construction. this is at university, right in the heart of berkeley and it's been burning for hours, likely causing significant damage to this building. just after 6:00, flames erupted. >> watched it literally go up. >> reporter: he saw from his apartment, across the street. >> what's going on? check the window and all you see it flame up. >> reporter: his comfort did not last long, as firefighters came door to door.

he managed to take his dog, apollo, but forgot his mask. firefighters say no other structures were burned. though, the apartment building to the west will definitely have water damage. residents there could be displaced. >> i know how much power is in one of these hoses. >> reporter: with several blocks closed off and smoke seen billowing throughout the city, the fire drew many onlookers. >> i admire the firemen, the policemen, just absolutely. i admire them and i'm here to watch them in action. >> reporter: the seven-story building was under construction. firefighters say the foreman was onsite, earlier today, but left at 5:00. no one was inside. the scaffolding and the height of the building created challenges. >> it may not be certain enough to enter, especially if the fire has been going for a while. especially, just trying to get through that netting. and we're assuming there's no sprinkler systems, you know, active in there.

>> reporter: and the red cross is out here on scene. unclear, yet, how many people were evacuated or possibly displaced by this fire. as for the cause of this fire, firefighters say all of that is still under investigation. they're going to bring out some drones to see if they can get some aerial shots to, also, see where the fire is still burning inside. reporting live, abc 7 news, m boone. >> when that fire first broke out. we were also streaming a live camera of the fire. if you would like alerts like this in the future, just download the app store -- the free app in your app store. well, turning now to the coronavirus pandemic. a concerning record set, today, in our nation. we now stand at 12 million covid-19 cases, today. that is according to johns hopkins data. now, to give some perspective on

how quickly the case rate is rising, there were 1 million new cases reported in the u.s. in just six days. it took 96 days for our nation to log its first million cases. in california, the percentage of positive tests over a 14-day period is 5.4%. last weekend, that number was 4.2%. the state recorded more than 15,400 new cases, from yesterday. that appears to be the highest number of daily cases reported by any state, to date. a new, controversial effort to help slow the spread in california began just about an hour ago. all nonessential work, travel, and gatherings, are banned between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. it applies to all 41 counties in the purple tier, you see here, where the virus is widespread. that includes the counties of sonoma, napa, solano, contra costa, santa clara, and santa cruz. but some police and sheriff's

departments have said they will not, in order to prioritize responding to crime. officials say the curfew is to protect people's health as cases surge but it will certainly have an impact on already-struggling businesses. health and economy are two things we are focused on as we continue to build a better bay area. abc news reporter, luz pena, has a look, now, at the final hours of nightlife tonight in alameda county. >> reporter: as the 10:00 p.m. curfew loomed, this clock served as a reminder. >> i don't see how that can keep happening. you know, like a rolling blackout. it's going to keep -- it's going to happen and stop. happen and stop. >> reporter: a sentiment several alameda residents shared. jonathan jonathan gibbs made it just in time. >> one, i wanted to get here early so i can could get my dinner. but also, so i could watch and see what happens. >> the town started shutting

the start of the work week, measured by the number of flight searches on the app. >> we are in the busier part of the thanksgiving-travel week. however, compared to pre-pandemic, our -- our loads remain down about 75% from what we would normally be seeing, at this time. >> the airport is taking a number of precautions to protect passengers against the coronavirus, including plexiglass screens, baggage wipes, and hand-sanitizer dispensers. despite the pandemic, this was the scene at chicago o'hare international airport, yesterday. illinois officials have imposed tighter restrictions on businesses and officials across the country have been urging people to limit their family-holiday gatherings or postpone them, altogether. in phoenix, a large crowd of passengers wait the to board their flights. most appeared to be wearing masks. so how much do you know about covid-19 safety during the

holidays? we have a covid-19 risk calculator explaining the safest and most dangerous things to do this holiday season. you can find it at abc 7 news dot com. over in the south bay, a drive-through food-distribution event helped hundreds of families put food on the table tonight. expected to serve 1,200 people during today's event in san jose. they say they are now serving more people than ever, before. >> the food supplies are coming in -- coming in pretty good. the problem is is that we need more of them than we ever have, before. we are serving about 500,000 people every month. that's double what we were prior to the pandemic. so, that just means we need more. >> second harvest says many of the people who came to today's giveaway are seeking help for the very first time. they have run out of savings or lost their jobs due to the pandemic. california's prison system is beginning to offer virtual visits for inmates. in-person visits have been cancelled statewide during the

abc 7's commitment to help build a better bay area includes exploring issues of race and social justice. today, people rallied in the east bay in support of a family accused by their neighbor of, quote, acting black. >> love, not hate! >> a member of the jones family led the rally along discovery bay boulevard which is very close to where the family lives. surveillance and cell phone video from monday shows the neighbor at their door with a poodle in one hand, and a stun gun in the other. the neighbor was upset over the jones's 2-year-old pitbull, dice, saying she didn't want to see him outside.

>> you're a black person in a neighborhood and you're acting like one. why don't you act like a white person in a white neighborhood? >> the jones family say they want this to be a lesson that this cannot be tolerated. all, because of a text that was sent to the wrong person. this year, reporter brianna whitney explains. the celebration, though, is bittersweet. >> dear, heavenly father, thank you for bringing everyone here together safely. >> reporter: their tradition lives in the hearts of so many around the world. thanksgiving just wouldn't be the same without wanda and jamal. >> i didn't want to miss thanksgiving with jamal. >> reporter: it was five years ago that grandma wanda thought she was texting her real grandson, but accidentally texted teenager, jamal, instead.

out of curtsy, sourtesy, she in jamal over for thanksgiving dinner. the two have celebrated with their families together, ever since. the pandemic has taken so much. and took the one, whose smile, hugs, and warmth, made jamal and his girlfriend makayla feel right at home. wanda's husband, lonni, passed away in march. wanda, there with him in his final moments. >> it was five minutes later and he passed away. so -- sorry. >> it's okay. i know it's hard. >> she knew her first thanksgiving without him would be hard. but jamal and makayla would make sure she wouldn't be lonely, this holiday. they decided to have an early, my think knowing even though lonni isn't here, his spirit is. jamal knows he would hear this. >> i would just like to say hi.

that's a recipe for us to get pretty clilhilly overnight. 36 in napa. 39. cold in the south bay to tomorrow. 45 the low in san francisco. so the 12-hour day planner, tomorrow. again, we will have some high clouds moving in, again. but it's a mostly cloudy day. it's a dry pattern, again, with temperatures topping upper 50s to mid-60s. so, a closer look at your highs on your sunday. it's a little bit cooler, tomorrow, than we were today. hit about 60 degrees in the city tomorrow. 66, though, in concord, after that chilly start first thing in the morning. 63 in san jose. 64 in santa rosa. and high of 57 for half-moon bay. over the next seven days, we look for any rainfall across the state of california. and it looks like the storm track over the next several days

is going to stay pretty far to the north and i am talking on the border of oregon and washington. so, high pressure really going to be in control for the week ahead. as you can see, across the entire golden state, we're going to remain pretty dry. with any rainfall, likely, only on the border of california and oregon. so, what that means for your thanksgiving holiday as we fast forward into thursday. the 12-hour day planner, we'll likely start out with temperatures in the 40s. once it gets sunny out there, temperatures will respond pretty nicely. so we will get up to the upper 50s, mid-60s. but if you are trying to have your meal outside, the warmest part of the day on thanksgiving is between noon and, say, 3:00 p.m. so you have about a three-hour window with those temperatures. by 7:00 p.m., we're already in the 40s in some spots. planning the next seven days for you, tomorrow, it's a chilly morning with a lot of cities starting out in the 30s. it's a dry pattern for much of

costa, and santa cruz. implemented in 41 counties. those 41 counties make up 94% of california's population. the news comes, just as many businesses, especially restaurants, began reopening. many police departments in the bay area say they won't be patrolling for curfew violators or actively stopping cars. north bay residents we talked to had mixed opinions. >> don't believe that you are more susceptible to covid between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. >> i think that's when people tend to drink more is at night. they let their guards down more. >> state officials say, during curfew hours you can still go to the grocery or drugstore, walk your dog, or get takeout from a restaurant. but, large gatherings, those should be avoided. the united states reached another, grim milestone today. 12 million confirmed coronavirus cases since the virus began. that is according to data by

johns hopkins university. 178,000 people tested positive for the virus, yesterday. 1,500 lost their lives. and 83,000 people are in the hospital. now, people are lining up to get tested before thanksgiving, to be able to spend it with loved ones. but the cdc is urging everyone to avoid travel for the holiday, and to celebrate with their immediate household, only. >> we definitely do not want to see thanksgiving, family get-togethers, be christmas-family funerals. >> johnson & johnson has begun the final stage of its trials for a vaccine. and the fda says a committee will meet on december 10th to discuss the pfizer vaccine, which says its shot is 95% effective. the food and drug administration is giving the green light to regeneron's antibody cocktail for some patients who test positive for covid-19. the fda says it is okay to give

to high-risk patients with mild or moderate symptoms. president trump received the therapy when he was battling covid-19. the cocktail contains two antibodies produced in a lab. regeneron says it will have doses for 80,000 pashttients th month. in the south bay, santa clara county is expanding testing because of the increase in covid-19 cases there. the fairgrounds will be expanded to accommodate 3,000 points a day, starting next week. expansion won't stop there. the goal is to make room for 5,000 appointments a day by mid-december. that facility will also be testing for the flu, while testing for covid-19 and anybody can get a flu shot. >> we also continue to have a -- our flu shot clinic and where people can come in and get a free flu shot, regardless of their immigration status. regardless of medical insurance. they can definitely come here

and get a flu shot. >> the facility accepts drive-through, bike, walk-up, and scheduled appointments. clinics will be closed for thanksgiving, next week. wel, not only are we in a pandemic in the middle of flu season. it's, also, shopping season. so, if you need to go out and need to use the atm, how do you stay safe? 7 on your side's michael finney introduces us to a device that claims to clean atm keypads. >> reporter: atms have been around for more than 50 years. you've probably used one. but with the coronavirus pandemic, should you be concerned? >> it's kind of just like all of our experiences right now. going to the grocery store. you're touching carts. i know there's some paranoia about people going into elevators. so, atm, you know, similar thing. people don't want to touch things that other people have touched. >> reporter: with some bay-area bank branches temporarily closed, customers could choose to conduct their reaction at the atm.

so, can they trust touching those keypads? jim is an atm manufacturer, which moved its headquarters to texas. it created v scan, an that sanitizes keypads. >> instilling confidence. in making sure that person at the atm knows that it's sanitized. >> sales executive for gen mega, he says v scan can kill up to 90% of bacteria and viruses using uvc light. he shows us how it works. first, insert your card. enter your p.i.n. and conduct your transaction. then, v scan disinfects the keypad, in a single pass. director of chemical engineering at the university of southern california. >> uvc kills bacteria in viruses by disrupting the fundamental

rna and dna, which then inhibits the bacteria and viruses from replicating. >> in a previous interview with abc 7, professor armani told us uvc light differs from ult ultraviolet a and b by using radiation instead of thermal treatment. but all can harm human skin. she said uv-c has been used used disinfectant to clean air and water supplies. so is it safe for you to be around uv-c light? >> we went to great lengths to figure out what could we do to uv-c to make sure it's safe? >> reporter: to keep consumers safe from exposure to the radiation, he also says the device will stop scanning when it senses something blocking its path. the food and drug administration

told 7 on your side in an e-mail, manufacturers are responsible for producing products that do not emit hazardous and unnecessary radiation. dunn says the manufacturer is following fda guidelines and is awaiting approval. professor armani thinks v scan can be effective but its efficiency should be monitored, over time. >> the challenge with this is that over time, any light bulb will begin to degrade. but if the uv-c system becomes less effective, suddenly, your virus particles are still living. >> research is still being done to see if uv-c can eradicate ere covid-19. many customers allowed to use an app at the atm and that cuts down even more on the touching. michael finney, 7 on your side. >> still ahead. abc 7 news at

like a tumultuous 2020 but you got a chance to play some soccer this year. >> yeah, it's been a crazy year. orlando is a special memory where we played in a tournament unlike any other we've ever played in. so it's definitely a year we'll remember. >> what do you miss about a regular soccer season you didn't have this year? >> i think the first one is fans. is much different. don't really get the full experience of seeing the city. the hardest part. we miss them. we see them on social media and we hear them in their cars, but it's not the same. >> first opponent in the play offs. how are you going to beat kansas city? >> we were kind of going each one as like a final. and, you know, i think that's one of the benefits of our team. >> it feels great to get that play off spot for our fan base and i just like everyone to know
