building a better bay area for a safe and secure future, this is abc7 news. >> some criticism and some support for california's new curfew. but are people in the bay area following the new rule? with that we say good evening and thank you so much for joining us, everybody. i'm dion lim. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard is live in palo alto now with the check on how the first night of curfew went. corn y el? >> reporter: police agencies from santa rosa, alameda county reporting to me that they had no major issues with the curfew overnight. and we're here on university avenue where a lot of restaurants will be serving for a few more hours before curfew begins. of course not every county is part of the curfew. but many feel like they should be to avoid confusion. day one of california's overnight curfew and many bay area police departments are

giving the all clear. >> as of last night and this morning we have not had any issues, and we appreciate everybody following as best they can. we know this is difficult especially during the holiday seasons. >> reporter: police say most nonessential businesses were closed by 10:00 p.m., and many nonessential workers were likely off the streets. six bay area purple-tiered counties where covid rates are spiking are under a mandatory curfew between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. through december 21st. santa clara county wants the public to report this hotline to report any curfew violators. >> we haven't received any complaints here at the covid-19 center. >> reporter: that could change as we head into the holiday season. santa clara county still with one of the highest covid rates in the state. 400 new cases per day. >> if we continue to see this increase at this rate, hospitals

are going to reach their maximum capacity within three weeks. >> reporter: in neighboring san mateo county, it remains in red tier with no curfew. but that's where some people are getting confused this is the spot where san mateo ends and santa clara county begins. so, in other words, curfew, no curfew. i think it's kind of stupid. i think if one has the other one should too. >> there's a lot of movement between the two counties so it might make sense for both counties to have the curfew. >> covid fatigue, it's real. >> reporter: san mateo county supervisor says even though san mateo, san francisco and marin countys are not part of the curfew yet, everyone should do their part, avoid large gatherings and stay at home if possible. >> at the end of it this virus knows no boundaries and knows no county lines. >> reporter: now the if you live in a curfew county, you can still walk your dog, go to the grocery store, or get

takeout during curfew hours. just avoid those large gatherings. we're live in palo alto tonight, cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> quite a difference just crossing the street. cornell, many thanks to you. now some people only defied the curfew in southern california. these protesters gathered in huntington beach past 10:00 p.m. the orange county sheriff's office as well as other southern california law enforcement said they would not enforce the curfew but were aware and planning for last night's unlawful assembly. no word on any citations. more new developments to tell you about in the covid-19 pandemic. latest numbers from california show more than 14,000 new cases of coronavirus on saturday. one of three record-breaking days this week. the state's average daily number of coronavirus cases has tripled since october, and the head of the u.s. effort to produce a coronavirus vaccine says the first immunizations could happen on december 11th. pfizer recently announced that

the vaccine appears to be 95% effective. and we have seen long lines at covid testing sites today in san francisco. abc7 news anchor reggie aqui tweeted this video of a sight at the 24th street people are first advised to check with their health insurance. the demand for testing has soared across the nation. in the u.s. more than 256,000 people have died from covid-19. abc7 news reporter has a look at how the states are handling an explosion in cases. >> reporter: the united states moving past a grim milestone this weekend. more than 12 million confirmed coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. nearly 9,500 american lives lost in the past week, a jump of almost 20% from the previous week. deaths are now climbing in 35

states in puerto rico. and hospitalizations are rising in every state. >> i would 100% be lying if i said i wasn't nervous to go to work next week. >> reporter: a county judge in el paso now asking the governor for permission to reimpose the curfew. the city's main morgue and mobile units filling up. 15 members of one family in arlington, texas, diagnosed with the virus after a small birthday party. >> we took every single precaution with the exception of gathering. you are not immune. your family's not immune. but staying at home you can prevent the spread of covid-19. >> reporter: officials now focused on the holiday season. >> there are more family gatherings. 37 days between today and january 2nd of significantly increased social activity. >> reporter: the cdc has urged

americans to avoid travel and to celebrate with just with those in your own household. >> when you're eating and drinking you have to take your mask off. we know now that those are the kinds of situations that are leading to outbreaks. >> reporter: pfizer filed for emergency use authorization for its vaccine. moderna expected to file by the end of the month. but there is concern many americans may not be willing to be vaccinated. >> i think it's very unfortunate. because this has been exacerbated by the political context under which we have worked very hard with the companies and with the thousands of people that have been involved to make these vaccines available. >> the weekend before thanksgiving is traditionally one of the busiest for travel. but covid-19 has had a clear impact at the airports. more than 1 million passengers were screened on friday by the tsa. that is the second highest total since march 17th. but this next number puts it all

the co-creator of the als ice bucket challenge died sunday following his seven-year battle with the neurodegenerative disease. pat quinn was 37 and years in yonkers, new york. quinn and pete created the viral video campaign, one of the first truly viral media sensations. the als association posted its gratitude to quinn for his work in the fight against the disease. california college of the arts faculty held a protest today to demand a fair contract and better management.

organizers picketed this afternoon next to the cca campus in oakland. they claim that management is anti-union and has laid off union leaders, cut faculty wages and walked out of bargaining sessions. now the union says the administration is planning to reopen class this spring without faculty input. >> our president and our provost will not come to the table to talk to us directly. so we feel that we're not even talking to the decisionmakers. and yet decisions about our livelihood and our lives are being made for us. >> the college administration tells abc7 news they respect both unnors and are committed to negotiating with health and safety as a top priority. starting tomorrow, you can apply for a job without getting out of your car. the united states postal service will be accepting applications at drive-through sites on monday and tuesday. locations are on evans avenue in san francisco and mcdowell boulevard in petaluma.

spin on the holidays, and the class was packed. tossing it over to drew now. i haven't seen you here at the station in, what, i think like six months. >> yeah, i'm up top here at the kgo broadcast center. we've n we've got partly cloudy skies. we are in store for a chilly night. we do have a little bit of action on the screen, especially close to ukiah. so we'll zoom on in up 101 near willett. there is some light rain associated with oi front. don't get excited, as this front slides south overnight, it's really going to lose most of its moisture. so unfortunately we're not looking at beneficial rain, just some spotty drizzle, especially long the coast line. numbers are dropping. 53 in the city. 57 in oakland. 54 in san jose. 58 that current temperature in clovedale. you can see that front pretty well defined moving into

northern california. again, it's not going to bring beneficial rain. it's really just some coastal drizzle. future weather as we go hour by hour, 8:00 tonight, there you can see around cloverdale or ukiah likely an isolated sprinkle. and then the front just falls apart. we have a lot of clouds, but little to no moisture except early in the morning on monday. you look along the peninsula and into the south bay, there is that chance again of some isolated drizzle. but that's about it in terms of any wet weather. so, overnight tonight we'll see a mix of stars and clouds out there. that chance of isolated drizzle. otherwise numbers in the mid-30s to mid-40s over the next 12 hours. now, tomorrow, it's very similar in terms of our temperatures. we'll find increasing sunshine as those clouds get out of here. upper 50s to mid-60s. so pretty close to average for this time of the year. what is not close to average, rainfall. look at this, next seven days,

again, the storm track is staying well to our north. so it looks like much of california including the bay area will remain dry over the next seven days. so we'll fast-forward into thanksgiving. thanksgiving day forecast, a lot of nine. again the warmest time frame if you're thinking about possibly having your meal outside between noon and about 3:00 p.m., otherwise jackets are certainly needed as those temperatures really cool off quickly. here's the accuweather forecast seven-day forecast. sun and clouds tomorrow. and then it's total sunshine on tuesday. just some minor variations in our afternoon temperatures, dion, looking nice for thanksgiving. and as we fast forward into the weekend, next weekend some chilly mornings and mild afternoons. but again the pattern is dry the next seven days. >> all right, nice to see you back

now, abc7 sports with chris alvarez. >> the san jose earthquakes are back in the postseason for the first time since 2017. and there is no margin for error. it's a single elimination, winner advances, loser goes home, quakes visiting sporting ks this afternoon. chris said earlier this week he'd like to play another year. 34th minute we're tied at salinas' first goal. sporting ks ties it up 91st minute. john luka, boccio, puts it in the net giving some of those fans a reason to celebrate.

finally now, there are plans to build a massive freeway overpass just for wildlife in southern california. and if the video out of utah is any indication, we are going to be in for a real treat. animals have been taking advantage of the critter bridge over the past couple of years. surveillance video has captured all kinds of wildlife big and small. we've got bobcats, coyotes, dear, mountain lions, moose, bears. they have all used it. officials hope to break ground on the california bridge next year. it is a cool sight to see. well, with that, that's all we have for right now for abc7 news at 5:00 i'm dion lim.
