what happened earlier? >> reporter: j.r., a devastating scene here in san jose. we're learning more details as the time goes by. we know several people were stabbed. at least two people have passed away from stab wounds. san jose police confirmed no church services were being conducted at the time of the stabbing, but we do know several homeless individuals were brought into the church to get them out of the cold. now, no confirmation yet of any arrest. this is homicide number 40 and 41 of 2020. san jose police are still investigating. we still do not know what took place inside this church facility that led to that stabbing. live here in san jose, luz pena, abc7 news. >> thank you so much, luz. we sent this push alert on our abc7 news app when news of the stabbing first broke tonight. we will be continuing to update that story on there and on our website and of course here live.

if you want alerts like this in the future, the app is free to download in the app store. turning now to the coronavirus pandemic, governor newsom revealed in just the past hour that he and his family will quarantine for 14 days after a possible exposure to covid-19. in a series of tweets, newsom said three of his children had been exposed to a chp officer who had tested positive for the virus. he says he and his wife did not have direct interaction with the officer. newsom also said his entire family tested negative today. still the governor says to be consistent with local guidance, they will quarantine for 14 days. the news comes days after one of newsom's children began quarantining due to a possible exposure at a private school. a look at the numbers now. according to state data, there were more than 14,000 new cases of coronavirus on saturday. that makes it one of three

record-breaking days this week. the state's average daily number of coronavirus cases has tripled since october. the head of the u.s. effort to produce a coronavirus vaccine says the first immunizations could happen on december 11th. pfizer recently announced that the vaccine appears 95% effective. now, your health is one of the main things we're focused on here at abc7 with an aim to build a better bay area amid this pandemic. four days after thanksgiving -- or before thanksgiving, that is, hundreds waited in line in san francisco's mission district to get tested at a pop-up test site before heading to san jose tonight. abc7 news reporter luz pena spoke to the lead organizers who are also trying to collect data about this virus. >> today we had a little bit north of 500 people that came out and got tested. we had lines as long as three blocks wrapped around the corner. >> reporter: in line, many essential workers like gonzalo

moran. >> nobody knows who's infected. >> reporter: moran is a painter. he's gotten tested five times. his job requires it. >> they're asking you for proof? >> they don't ask me. they ask the company. they want to be sure people who work in those places, they are okay. >> reporter: city data shows that 50% of covid-19 cases in san francisco are among latinos even though this group only makes up 15% of the population. leading this covid-19 testing campaign are ucsf researchers. >> low barrier means you can walk up. it's close by. you don't need an apartment. >> reporter: this doctor noticed that eight months after their first test site, latinos are less hesitant to tested now. >> we were out hire in april. it was all extremely new and there were many more unknowns. i think now one of the things that i think has gotten around and people know more frequently is you can be asymptomatic and

have covid. >> reporter: during this three-day campaign, they're also asking new questions. >> if you're an seessential worker, what kind of essential work are you doing? can we notice patterns? if we have that information, it allows us to find solutions to slow the spread of covid-19 in a community that's been hardest hit. >> reporter: the ruesults take 5 minutes, an enticing response time when covid-19 test sites are being flooded with those who want to use a test as permission to see family. the latino task force has this message. >> we've had people that show up that maybe want to get tested because they want to go to a hawaiian vacation with their significant other, and that's not why we're here. we are at these locations because these are individuals that are living many people to one home, working essential jobs. >> reporter: in san francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. now, despite cdc and state warnings not to travel, sfo has been busy this weekend ahead of thanksgiving. this is a live look now at the

airport. i was there earlier tonight and talked with some travelers from really all over the country, some not so worried. others taking all the precautions they can. terminals at san francisco international airport are packed with people as we are now just days away from thanksgiving. some taking all the precautions they can, and that includes this woman in a bodysuit. >> it's a little bit more busy than i expected or hoped it would be, but i had to travel for work, so i just suited up. >> reporter: this traveler didn't want to be identified but says she got her suit on amazon for $5. >> i have a baby, and i spend a lot of time with my parents who are 85 and 75, and it's just not worth it. >> reporter: while not all of those we spoke with took a covid test, around half did, including this family heading to hawaii, who spoke of the challenges out there just to get a test, something hawaii officials are requiring for those traveling

there. >> need a doctor that then gets you covid test appointment. you have to do it 72 hours in advance of leaving on your flight. >> reporter: the cdc has recommended that people don't travel, but according to tsa, that did not stop more than a million people who made their way through u.s. airports last friday. and many we spoke with sunday say they are being cautious. >> we're comfortable traveling smaller distances. >> i had some concerns about it, but on the plane it wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be. >> the planes are a little crowded, which is kind of concerning, but other than that, it's fine. >> reporter: the woman wearing the body suit says her flight went well. she doesn't plan to take a covid test but does plan to quarantine. >> i feel really good. in here i brought a bunch of wipes, so i'm just going to wipe down my bags, and i don't feel like i really took that much of a risk honestly. >> she told me some people were looking at her, but she didn't care. for some perspective on that 1

million passengers that were screened friday by the tsa, that is the second highest total since october 18th, but it's also down more than 1.5 million passengers from a year ago. sfo officers told me tonight that friday and saturday night crowds look comparable to what we saw before the pandemic. now, tonight is the second night of a new effort to try to slow the spread in california. purple tier counties, all nonessential work, travel, and gatherings are banned between 10:00 and 5th rks 5:00 in the m. cornell barnard has a look at how the first night went. >> reporter: day one of california's overnight curfew and many bay area police departments are giving the all-clear. >> as of last night and this morning, we've not had any issues. we appreciate everybody following as best they can. we know this is difficult, especially during the holiday

season. >> reporter: police say most nonessential businesses were closed by 10:00 p.m., and many nonessential workers were likely off the streets. six bay area purple tier counties where covid rates are spiking are under a mandatory curfew between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. through december 21st. santa clara county wants the public to call this covid hotline to report any curfew violators. south bay police agencies are tweeting the same number. >> we haven't received any complaints here at the covid-19 center emergency preparations center regarding the curfew. >> reporter: that could change as we head into the holiday season. santa clara county still with one of the highest covid rates in the state. >> if we continue to see this increase at this rate, hospitals are going to reach their maximum capacity within three weeks. >> reporter: in neighboring san mateo county, the numbers are better. it remains in red tier with no curfew. but that's where some people are getting confused. this is the spot where san mateo

welcome back. in the east bay, firefighters are still waiting to enter the berkeley apartment building where they contained a six-alarm fire. crews were on-scene putting out hot spots that had been flaring up this morning. the fire broke out at the building, which is under construction, just before 6:00 saturday night. the berkeley fire department says the fire is still active. nobody was inside. neighboring apartment buildings were evacuated. the fire chief says it could be a while before they get inside. >> we had difficulty reaching the scene of the fire. it's burning near the center of the building. we're not sure of the stability, so we can't send anybody inside. we have been here since 6:00 last night, and we anticipate it

could be as much as another 24 hours. >> city building inspectors are checking for damage in nearby buildings. at least one three-story apartment building has suffered water damage. well, the co-creator of the als ice bucket challenge died sunday following his seven-year battle with the disease. pat quinn was 37 and lived in yonkers, new york. quinn and pete frates created the viral video campaign, one of the first truly viral social media sensations. it raised more than $220 million for als research and awareness around the globe. the als association posted its gratitude to quinn for his work and the fight against the disease. well, russian river brewing is holding off on bay area tradition because of covid-19. plienny the younger 2021 was supposed to be available in february, but the brewery says that it won't be safe to gather. they also say that neither the

santa rosa or windsor pub have been allowed to reopen for indoor dining. pliny the younger 2020 will be able in limited release bottles for purchase online sometime in late january. for the first time, a uc santa cruz graduate has been selected as a rhodes scholar, and she plans to use it to one day build a better bay area. she and 31 other americans were chosen virtually this year because of the pandemic, but that didn't lessen her enthusiasm. >> when they announced it, my name, i felt like i almost dreamed it. like it was a really dream come true. and then, you know, after we talked a little bit, i turned off my computer. i opened my door fast, screaming to my parents saying, you know, i'm a rhodes scholar. i won. >> she's very excited, and she should be. she says she'll study economics and the environment with her oxford scholarship. she's already thinking about how she'll use the knowledge to help

worked very hard with the companies and, you know, the thousands of people that have been involved to make these vaccines available. >> reporter: zohreen shah, abc news, los angeles. western states and cities are also cracking down. this was the line at a test site yesterday in los angeles. today health officials announced that all dining other than takeout, drive-through, and delivery will end on wednesday night for at least three weeks. it comes after the city's five-day average of new cases topped 4,000. nevada tonight also announced new restrictions. capacity is being reduced for businesses, including restaurants and casinos, and private gatherings are being limited to no more than ten people from two households. a surge in the state has broken cases, death, and infection rate records this month. well, president-elect joe biden's team is pressing on, but they warn that stonewalling from the trump administration could put american lives at risk.

biden is set to announce his first cabinet picks on tuesday. it's expected he'll name antony blinken as his nominee for secretary of state. he's been one of biden's closest advisers for decades. but biden's team says there's only so much they can do without an official transition. >> the president-elect, the vice president-elect are not getting the kind of intelligence briefings they're entitled to. our transition isn't getting access to agency officials to help develop our plans, and there's a lot of focus on that vaccine rollout plan that's going to be critical in the early days of a biden presidency. we have no access to that. and we're not getting background checks. >> meantime, president trump's legal cases continue to be thrown out of court for lack of evidence. so far, his campaign and the president's allies have lost in court at least 30 times. well, some of california's biggest women donors are urging governor newsom to select a woman of color to fill the seat

of vice president-elect kamala harris. according to vox news, the democratic woman will release a public letter tomorrow saying newsom should not replace harris with a white woman. the letter will appear as a full-page ad in the "l.a. times" and "san francisco chronicle." congresswoman karen bass and barbara lee are believed to be competitors for the position. well, california college of the arts faculty held a protest today to demand a fair contract and better management. organizers picketed this afternoon at the corner of college and broadway next to the cca campus in oakland. they claim that management is anti-union and has laid off union leaders, cut faculty wages, and walked out of bargaining sessions. now the union says the administration is planning to reopen class this spring without faculty input.

something out of a horrible thing like this pandemic. >> today's meal was an italian spin on the holidays, and the class was packed. well, black friday is just days away. can you believe it? with covid cases surging, many shoppers and stores have plans in place very different from years past. abc news reporter rebecca jarvis explains. >> reporter: the decorations and lights are out, but the shoppers are planning to stay in this year. adobe predicts online shopping will top $189 billion, up 33% from last year as 60% of shoppers say they plan to do at least some of their holiday shopping from home this year, and 41% say they won't be hitting the stores come black friday. what are retailers doing in response? well, they are offering a number of new services. target says its curbside pickup service is up more than 700% as shoppers take advantage of that new option.

ahead. live doppler along with satellite, we have a cold front moving through northern california as we speak. any moisture is really just staying well north of the region. we're just getting increased cloud cover tonight as it moves through. early in the morning tomorrow, between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m., there's a chance of a little coastal drizzle but no significant rainfall with this front. we'll talk about mainly clear skies in the north bay. mostly cloudy skies in the south bay. mid-30s to mid-40s for our overnight lows. monday is a mostly sunny day. it's dry again. numbers in the upper 50s to mid-60s, pretty close to average for this time of year. 59 in the city. 62 in oakland. 62 in san jose. we'll take a peek at that thanksgiving day forecast. it's dry from start to finish. sunny skies ending in temperatures not budging too far further. typical average to the low to mid-60s. the accuweather seven-day forecast, mostly sunny over the next several days. total sunshine tuesday.

welcome back. well, here's some holiday tradition for you. two turkeys have been selected to be pardoned at the white house for thanksgiving. >> when they strut like they're doing right now, they're being sexy. they're showing off. they're thinking there's got to be a hen here someplace. >> there's the gobble, gobble right there. one of these birds will be named the official thanksgiving turkey on tuesday, and the other will be an alternate. they are raised at the woll cot turkey farm in iowa by ron and suedy kardel. they'll make the long journey to washington, d.c. where the birds will get the royal treatment.
