americans not to travel, airports in many cities were crowded this weekend. some reporting the highest travel volume since the pandemic began. oxford's coronavirus is about 70% effective. that's less than the vaccines from pfizer and moderna. they could be available sooner. >> the race for the vaccine comes with more than 84,000 americans in the hospital with the virus. >> the crisis is nationwide. >> reporter: this morning some california restaurants already crippled by covid are being dealt another blow. starting at 10:00 p.m. wednesday all dining in los angeles will shut down again. only take-out, drive-through and delivery will be allowed. >> i have to say i'm all for it. i think we have to knock this thing down. the vaccine is coming, but i think that in the meantime we have to just -- the numbers are sky rocketing. we have to do something. >> reporter: across the country sunday more than 100,000 new coronavirus cases were reported.

for a 20th consecutive day. >> our case rate is at a wildfire level. >> reporter: in nevada the governor issuing a statewide pause, tightening mask requirements and reducing capacity limits in public places. >> let me explain this quickly, whether you believe in the science of covid or not, the reality is this, it's simple. covid is filling up our hospital beds and that threatens all nevadans. >> the governor of georgia now urging people to wear a mask. >> as the weather turns cold, we have seen georgia's case numbers increase. we continue to ask the people of georgia to do a few simple things to limit the spread, wear a mask, practice social distancing. >> reporter: in the last week 10,000 americans have died from the virus. the equivalent of one person dying every minute. the kansas city fire department mourning the loss of two of its members, 45-year-old paramedic

underlying health conditions. here's a sign of how hard the pandemic is hitting families and some incredible generosity. thousands of people in atlanta lined up to receive free food donated by tyler perry. the line was five miles long. 12 million unemployed americans will lose their benefits at the end of the year unless congress takes action. now to breaking news from washington. we learned who president-elect joe biden plans to nominate for secretary of state. it comes as more republicans call on president trump to concede. two big votes are expected today on certifying election results. abc's elizabeth schulze has the latest. >> reporter: there's a potential dead lock in michigan as the state moving to finalize its election results today. that's not stopping joe biden from picking key members of his cabinet. michigan's canvassing board made up of two republicans and two democrats is preparing to vote

to certify the presidential election results or delay the process to allow an audit. one republican member is expected to vote to delay the certification. if there's a tie, the issue could end up in court. >> if there were a 2-2 split, it would then go to the michigan supreme court to determine what their response would be, what their order would be. if they didn't have an order it would be certified, we would have a constitutional crisis in michigan. that's never occurred before. >> reporter: michigan's secretary of state saying we have no reason to doubt the canvass will carry out their duty to certify. also today some counties in pennsylvania are set to certify their election results. it comes after a state judge dismissed a trump lawsuit ruling the campaign's allegations are stitched together like frankenstein's monster. a growing number of republicans are calling on president trump to accept the election. >> if you have the evidence, present it. quite frankly the conduct of the

president's legal team has been a national embarrassment. >> reporter: lisa murkowski saying a pressure campaign on state legislators is unprecedented and inconsistent with our democratic process. the calls come as the trump campaign is cutting ties with sidney powell after she made baseless claims about the election. >> president trump won by a landslide. we'll prove it. >> reporter: president trump tweeted last week that powell was part of a team of, quote, wonderful lawyers and representatives. this is how giuliani introduced powell on tuesday. >> we're represented president trump and the trump campaign. when i finish, sidney powell and then jenna ellis will follow me. >> reporter: in a new statement the campaign said powell is practicing law on her own, added she's not a member of the trump legal team. president-elect joe biden is expected to nominate antony blinken for secretary of state.

he's been a close adviser to biden for decades scene here in the situation room the night osama bin laden was killed. as biden makes his cabinet picks, his chief of staff is frustrated over lack of coordination by the trump administration. >> our transition isn't getting access to agency officials to develop plans. there's a lot of focus on the vaccine roll out plan and we have no access to that. >> reporter: we're learning more about trump's possible plans for the future. "the washington post" said he could announce his run for the white house in 2024 by the end of this year. mona? >> elizabeth, thank you. a 15-year-old is under arrest for the mass shooting at a mall outside milwaukee. police say friday's violence stemmed from a dispute between two groups. the suspect initially escaped by leaving with the mall crowd after the shooting. eight people were wounded. police say all of them are expected to recover. time for a look at your monday morning weather.

back now with frightening moments at this motorcycle race in portugal. the racer falls off his bike and slides on the asphalt as sparks fly from his bike. once he comes to a stop, he has to scramble out of the way, crawling and running to avoid the bikes. he is okay. new york city has seen a rise in violent attacks on the subway. two people were shoved onto the tracks in separate incidents in the last week. this man pulled himself to safety and walked away unharmed. last week a woman was pushed in front of a train by a mentally ill man. she survived with only a few stitches. >> i woke up later in the hospital. i was very confused. my head was like that. >> subway officials say the city must do more to ensure people

mentally ill get services they need. we turn to the florida man speaking out after saving his dog from an alligator. megan tevrizian has the story behind this dramatic rescue. >> reporter: dramatic video of a dog owner saving his pet from an alligator. >> he just came out from under the water like a missile. >> reporter: richard wilbankswis was walking along the pond when a five-foot gator grabbed gunner. >> i saw the alligator and reacted. >> reporter: richard who was 50 feet away chased after his puppy, catching ahold of the gator and prying his jaws open, allowing gunner to break free an run away. >> it all happened so fast. it was just reaction.

>> reporter: the heroic feat captured on surveillance video by the florida wildlife federation. >> it's not necessarily common, but it's not unheard of for pets to be put in a situation where they may be harmed by a predator or wildlife. >> reporter: gunner was taken to the hospital with a single puncture wound. richard had a few cuts on his hand and is okay. richard's wife saying the bond between gunner and richard is rock solid. >> could it have been more bonding? i don't know because when rick is around the dog does not give me the time of day. >> you know, i'm so attached to him. he's just wonderful. >> reporter: the florida wildlife federation says it released the video because it's a teachable moment, showing how quickly pets can get into danger. they recommend keeping dogs on leashes and making sure you're aware of your surroundings at

a fight even broke out where a man lost his pants. we're getting the first look at the suspect after a deadly shooting in nebraska. police say he killed two workers at a sonic restaurant near omaha. officers responded to the scene. a minute later they got a call about the shooting. the suspect surrendered a short time later. >> when they told him to put his arms behind his back he complied and was handcuffed. we didn't find any weapons on him at that moment. we're thankful for that. >> three days before the shooting the suspect was arrested at the same sonic for fraud. police have not released a motive for the killings. black friday sales already under way as stores try to spread out traffic during the pandemic. best buy is now offering laptops for $110. that's a 52% discount. kohl's is selling a ninja blender for $80 off. macy's has an air fryer for $19.
