the suspect in a deadly stabbing spree still has not been found. many questions remain this morning, who in the church was targeted and why. julian glover is live there right now putting together the clues. people that show up, that maybe want to get tested because they want to go on a hawaiian vacation with their significant other, that's not why we're here. there's a testing crunch in san francisco with high demand for the holidays. a pop-up site perhaps overtaken by some people and ignoring those who need it the most. as of this morning a third drugmaker promising a highly effective vaccine. good morning. it is monday, november 23rd. before we get to those stories we want to check in with mike for a look at our forecast. good morning, mike. >> good morning. hi, everybody. welcome to monday. it's a little foggy out there. you can see up in the north bay, parts of the east bay, down into the south bay, a bit of fog there. this is the way it looks from san jose, you can see the low

clouds and kind of the fuzziness there created this morning. so far most of us are dealing with okay visibility except around santa rosa. this will drift us to the south for the morning commute. eventually a dry cold front will wipe it away and bring us a mostly sunny afternoon. temperatures, 57 at half moon bay. san francisco and also up around lake port at 59. the rest of us, 60 to 66 degrees, close to average if not just a bit warmer. expect a lot of this through the seven-day forecast. that's coming up. here is kumasi. thank you. this morning we're expecting an update from san jose police after two people were killed in a stabbing attack. it happened at grace baptist church in san jose and nobody has been arrested. julian glover is live there with the details. j julian? good morning. still working to get an update from san jose police this morning as to what led up to this stabbing.

as you said two people killed, an unknown number of others injured. you can see still police actively working over my shoulder this morning. they pushed us back about a block from the actual crime scene at the church. let's give you what we know so far. it happened shortly after 8:00 p.m. last night. san jose police confirming that no church services were happening at the time. the church is located near san jose, a block away from the student services center. it's unclear if the school was placed on lockdown given the proximity to the crime scene. according to police, the grace baptist church often took in homeless people off the streets to get them out of the cold. it's unclear if the two people killed were homeless. >> i've seen people apparently people congregating there from time to time, around meal time, i assumed they were given them food. i've gone to a few community

meetings regarding managing the situation so it doesn't pose a threat to the community. >> so far this morning very few details as to what led up to this deadly stabbing or how many other people might have been stabbed in this act. the person who did this is still out there this morning. san jose police as far as we're told are actively looking for that person. we are working to find out when we will get an update from san jose police. as soon as we hear back more we'll let you know more on air and online. for now reporting live in san jose, julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you. this morning there is more hope for a vaccine for coronavirus. astrazeneca is announcing overnight its vaccine is up to 90% effective. jobina is at the live desk with the just released data. >> astrazeneca has been working with oxford university to develop a covid-19 vaccine. the latest trial results show that the vaccine is up to 90%

effective and that's encouraging news here. so vaccine trial participants were split into two groups. one group was given a half dose of the vaccine followed by a full dose one month later. that was 90% effective. the other group was given two full doses of the vaccine about a month apart. this was 62% effective. the average of both groups returned a 70% efficacy rate. a recent gallup poll found 42% of americans are not willing to be vaccinated. dr. jerome adams was on "gma" this morning asking people to trust approved vaccines. >> we have not cut any safety corners. most reassuring thing i can say to you, america, when they tell me that i can get the vaccine, i will get it because i know that's the best way to protect myself and to protect my family and my community. >> the surgeon general answered more viewer questions on "gma." you can watch that at 7:00 after abc7 mornings. reggie? >> thank you. governor newsom and his family are in quarantine for two weeks after a possible exposure to covid-19.

the governor tweeted last night three of his children were exposed to a chp officer who tested positive. he said he and his wife did not interact with the officer. newsom said his family tested negative yesterday. the revelation comes days after one of newsom's children started quarantining after possible exposure at school. a look at the latest numbers now, according to state data, there were more than 14,000 new cases just on saturday. that makes it one of three record breaking days over the week. the state's average daily number of coronavirus cases has tripled since october. when you look at the country's numbers, they show that one american is dying from this virus nearly every minute. happening today, there's a push to keep front line workers safe during the holidays. several california retail workers are expected to speak on behalf of their union. the news conference will start at 11:00 this morning. united food and commercial workers is calling for increased safety measures, stricter mask enforcement and for hazard pay.

the union represents 140,000 workers in california. as cases skyrocket here across the country and in the state, more and more people are trying to get tested and it's becoming frustrated. this weekend hundreds waited in san francisco in the mission district at this pop-up testing site. >> we had a little more than 500 people get tested. >> i actually took that video. i saw it firsthand. researchers teamed up with the latino testing researchers to set up this site. researchers are tracking patterns in hopes of finding solutions to slow the spread. the task force shared this pointed message. >> you have people that show up that maybe want to get tested because they want to go on a hawaiian vacation with their significant other. that's not why we're here. we're at these locations because

all right. we have a cold front moving through our neighborhoods. it's kicking up some clouds, even some mist out there. i've seen some drizzle in our higher elevations. be aware of that. it's definitely moist. you can see a bit of fog. look how uniform those temperatures are. 48 to 49 across the south bay. elsewhere we're mainly in the upper 40s to low 50s until you get to the north bay where the drier air moved in. 39 in napa, allowed some fog to develop around sebastopol and santa rosa. that's around all during the morning commute. here's your activity planner. other than a bit of mist this morning, a drier and sunny afternoon with temperatures average to a little bit above average. heading through 9:00, most of us around 50 to 53 degrees. at 11:00, 55 to 59. by 1:00, look at that, 58 to 64. that's pretty comfortable for this time of year. if there are some kids in school this week, about 3:00 letting out, 57 to 75.

developing news as we get closer to an approved covid-19 vaccine. state officials are working out the logistics of vaccine distribution. jobina is at the live desk with their biggest challenge. according to the southern california news group, the next big challenge is figuring out how to keep the covid-19 vaccines cold. so pfizer, moderna and astrazeneca need their vaccines to be kept at a certain temperature. they all vary. most of the specialized freezers cost between 7,000 and $15,000 each. freezer manufacturers say they're doing their best to keep

up with the surge in orders while dealing with significant backlogs. state and county officials have been working on the logistics of vaccine distributions since april. kumasi? >> all right. thank you. in the east bay, firefighters are still waiting to enter this berkeley apartment building where they contained a six alarm fire. crews were on the scene putting out hot spots that were flaring up yesterday morning. the fire broke out just before 6:00 saturday night. the building was under construction. nobody was inside. neighbors apartment buildings had to be evacuated. the fire chief says it could be a while before people get back in. >> we had difficulty reaching the scene of the fire. it's burning near the center of the building. we're not sure of the stability, we can't send anybody inside. we've been here since 6:00 last night. it could be as much as another 24 hours. city building inspectors are checking for damage in nearby buildings. at least one three-story apartment building had water damage. new video shows a skydiver

making a grand exit from a hot air balloon over southern california. >> whoo! >> this gives me anxiety looking at it. his name is josh newman, he swung from that balloon before freefalling to the ground. he has a parachute. it did deploy. he's fine. you didn't see it in the video. newman is an experienced skydiver from l.a. so please this should go without saying, so please don't do this. >> okay. new this morning, we're hearing from the florida man who saved the life of his 3-month-old puppy from the jaws of an ail datealligator. it was all caught on camera. the little dog is okay. but look at this video. the owner jumped into the water and pried the gator's jaws open. richard wilbanks spoke to "good morning america" about how all of this went down.

>> that's not really florida. >> you can see all the countries. >> i thought you would go to wild kingdom or. >> disney's animal kingdom, mike. >> thank you. animal kingdom. let's go down to san jose where it's a little fuzzy this morning. they get a little mist out of that cloud deck moving through as the cold front continues to push north to south across our neighborhoods. about 49 degrees there. the sun will increase as the drier air rolls in. it will bring us average to above average highs today. less fog tonight with the drier air, that brings us colder conditions and a bit of frost possible in the usual deepest inland valleys. it will be coolest this week in the morning but also warmest in the afternoons. another dry cold front will roll through. here's the reason why we're having the pattern we're having all week. there's that area of high pressure, remember back to our drought years? it just stayed there the entire winter. right now it will stay there for the most part this week.

flying ahead of thanksgiving. if you add all the traffic at sfo and our airports across the country you will find that 3 million of us boarded flights over just this weekend. amy hollyfield is live at the airport hearing from passengers this morning. >> it's busy here this morning. as we talk to passengers we're learning that it was just a calculated risk for everyone. look behind me. you can see the people here. they all kind of did that calculation in their head for themselves and decided the trip was worth it. we did see one woman wearing some kind of a protective suit for her flight. she had on goggles, gloves and a mask and this white suit. she's the most covered up we have seen. a lot of travelers have on gloves and goggles, an indication that they are worried but still going. one man said he thought twice about it but he said everyone has the week off, seems to be traveling so he decided to go, too. when he got here he did realize he does feel a bit nervous.

>> so, right now i'm feeling kind of nervous because you don't know whether people are really getting covid. there's a lot of people traveling. just try to do my best to protect myself. >> i think if you take the necessary precautions, i think the airlines have been doing a good job making sure they refilter the air, try to stay socially distant. getting tested before and after my flights to make sure i didn't contract anything along the way. and i feel like my parents are not in the at a risk age group. >> we just got the numbers from over the weekend. more than 3 million people in the united states went through security this weekend. that is down from a normal thanksgiving weekend. friday was down 1.5 million passengers from the usual. definitely the most traveling we've seen during the pandemic. so health officials have been begging people to stay home this holiday. it seems like some are agreeing

to do that, others, however, are going for it. reporting live at sfo, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. as cases skyrocket across the u.s., there's new hope this morning about a vaccine. jobina has a new report from astrazeneca. >> astrazeneca announcing overnight it's preparing to submit paperwork for emergency authorization for its covid-19 vaccine for countries around the world. the drugmaker is working with oxford university to develop the vaccine. trial results show the vaccine is up to 90% effective when people are given a half dose then a full dose a month later. the fda said it will review pfizer's request for vaccine authorization on november 10th. they hope it could prevent what happened to one family in texas. alexa said 15 family members got sick after some of them went to an indoor birthday party.

>> we all want to return to a sense of normalcy. i plea that my family's story can act as a learning lesson for all of us. we took precautions. i think that the story is how much do you love your family and are willing to protect them? >> she says her family wore masks and washed their hands, but it wasn't enough. cities and states are implementing new restrictions to flatten the curve. starting wednesday night, indoor and outdoor dining will be banned in l.a. county. masks will be required in public spaces like casinos. most bay area counties have a curfew because of rising cases. you can see all the purple tier counties. all nonessential work and gatherings are banned between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. sfrae san francisco is exempt from that county because it's in the red tier but is in danger of falling to the purple tier soon. abc7 news spoke with neighbors living near the border between

san mateo and santa clara counties and they say this curfew is meaningless when people can cross the border. >> i think it's kind of stupid. if one has it, i think the other one should too. >> there's a lot of movement between the two counties, and so it might make sense for both counties to have the curfew. santa clara county and local law enforcement are encouraging the public to call a covid hotline to report curfew violatorers. you can see where your county stands any time. our team is posting updates on this exclusive county tracker as new guidelines come in. check it out at abc7news.com or on our abc7 news app. happening today, a coalition of latinex elected officials will rally support from governor newsom. the group is calling on them to appoint a latinex person to the california senate seat that will be vacated by kamala harris. today's rally is set for 11:00 a.m. at san jose's mexican heritage plaza. dozens of leaders and community

members will get together for similar rallies across the state. this also comes as some of california's biggest female donors are urging governor newsom to select a woman to fill senator harris's seat. according to vox news, the democratic women will release a public letter today saying newsom should not replace harris and her senate seat with a white woman. the letter will appear as a full-page ad in the "l.a. times" and in the "san francisco chronicle." congresswoman karen bass and barbara lee are believed to be in consideration for this position. one of this year's rhodes scholars is a south bay native. we'll hear how she plans to use the honor to build a better bay area. and you are taking a live look at the big board at the new york stock exchange. right now we're up about 200 points. another update on how the markets are doing next. but first a check on your weather and meteorologist mike nicco. hey, mike. >> hi, guys. i'm taking a look at the current conditions out there right now.

and what we're seeing are temperatures that are just a bit milder in some areas, up to 17 degrees warmer in places like livermore. let's drive down into some neighborhoods. we'll go into the east bay. we have 48 in places like castro valley. 49 in fremont. 47 in san leandro. everyone else around 50 to 55 degrees under a mostly cloudy and even fog and mist in the air this morning. so watch out. maybe some slick spots around hayward. you can see that fog elsewhere. temperatures outside of the north bay in the upper 40s to low 50s. where we clear it out, mid to upper 30s in places like santa rosa and napa. when we clear it out, that's when the fog moved in after the high clouds and the low clouds in stoan jose moved out. they'll take all during the commute to get out of here. expect those foggy and misty areas. let's talk about what will happen this week. we'll start today, notice the storm track well to the north as we head through tuesday and wednesday. in fact, wednesday another dry

are fighting life threatening stab wounds this happened at the grace baptist church near san jose state. julian glover is live at the scene. what do we know about the suspect? >> right now the latest word from san jose police is that the suspect is still out there this morning. we're still waiting to get an official update. a few details have been released like what led up to the stabbing and if it happened inside of the church or just on the church property at grace baptist church. here's some more details of what we know so far. it happened shortly after 8:00 p.m. last night or before 8:00 p.m. san jose police confirming no church services were happening at the time. the church is located near san jose state university. just about a block away from the student services center. that's where police have us pushed back this morning. it's unclear if the school was ever placed on lockdown given the proximity to the crime scene. according to police, the grace baptist church often took in homeless people off the streets
