how are we doing out there today, mike? >> it's pretty quiet so far. thank you. hi to kumasi and sue and you. we did have 0.004 inches of rain tip the bucket in rohnert park, otherwise drizzle above 2,000 feet. on live doppler 7, it looks quiet out there as far as the fog gets up in the north bay and it's thick along 101. unlike most days, the winds will pick up as we head through the morning commute. this should push it to the south and thin it and eventually evaporate it quicker because of those winds. all right. those winds are going to usher in a bit cooler weather today under a mostly sunny sky. mid to upper 50s along the coast. 60 to 63 for the rest of us. i'll have the update on a breezy thanksgiving forecast coming up. here is kumasi with the top headline today. today is expected to be a busy day at airplanes nationwide. millions of people are traveling for thanksgiving despite a warning from the cdc. look at this.

this is flightradar24.com and it shows air traffic in the u.s. right now. a lot of people are already on the planes. anser hassan is live at sfo with what we're seeing there. good morning. >> reporter: what we're seeing here is more passengers starting to check in. look at the flight board behind me. these are the domestic and international flights departing out of sfo all day today. so definitely not the volume we're used to seeing for this time of year. if you pan over to the security checkpoint, also not too busy. according to abc news, 4 million people have already gone through u.s. airport checkpoints from last friday through sunday. that's the most passengers we've seen since the start of the pandemic back in mid-march. thanksgiving reservations were ticking upward in early october, but dropped with the surge in covid-19 cases. one passenger says his wife is traveling for business and he wanted the family to be together

for thanksgiving. >> at some point you have to step out on faith. get into the air. >> where are you heading to? >> portland, oregon. >> family, friends? >> my wife going for work. with everything going on we said we'll go with you. feel safer that way. it worked out. it's thanksgiving weekend. >> the city of san francisco listed some holiday travel guidelines on their website. they say if you must travel to know the situation in the city that you're traveling to. if it's a high-risk area you may need to take extra precautions. they're advising to get tested before you return back to the bay area. airlines are reminding all passengers to arrive at the airport two hours before your flight. reporting live, anser hassan, abc7 news. >> thank you. some travelers are looking for alternatives to flying. one option is taking the train. amtrak is running trains at

about 50% capacity. it implemented new and enhanced cleaning protocols, too, so that's everything from schedules to payments being accessed through an app so you have a contactless experience. doctors say train travel can be as safe as planes with the right protocols. >> so the upsides are that you don't have to spend time in a crowded airport. the train is probably a little less controlled. people walk up and down the train. >> if you do decide to take the train, sit next to a vent, crack the window if you can and keep your mask on at all times. now to the deadly toll the coronavirus is taking to all of us here in the u.s. more than 2,000 people died from covid-19 yesterday marking the deadliest day in more than six months. right now more than 88,000 americans are hospitalized. for the 22nd day in a row, the u.s. has reported more than 100,000 new cases. as those numbers go up, the cdc is considering shortening the

quarantine period for people who have been potentially exposed. currently they recommend two weeks but that could change as guidelines go to 7 to 10 days. a person would need a negative test before ending the quarantine. dr. anthony fauci says that he can see why the cdc might want to shorten that period. he spoke this morning on "gma." >> when you have the full extent of the quarantine time, it makes people reluctant to get tested because they don't want to say, well, i'm tested now i have to stay out of work, i may lose money. i'm not getting subsidized and i might even lose my job. >> as we head into the holiday weekend, dr. anthony fauci has this message for the american people. >> vaccines are right on the horizon. if we can just hang in there a bit longer and continue to do the simple mitigation things that we are talking about all the time, the masks, the distancing, the avoiding crowds, particularly indoor. if we do those things we'll get through it. that's my final plea before the

tornado sirens blared in downtown dallas ahead of a severe storm. this morning we're looking at some of the danmage. you're looking at a damaged apartment building in arlington, texas a couple miles from the nfl and mlb parks. that's scary. the national weather service issued the tornado warning that expired at midnight. no word yet on whether an actual tornado landed there. it's a funnel cloud until it reaches the ground then it becomes a tornado. that looks like impressive damage. the national weather service looks for the pattern of the debris. if it's lying in a rotational pattern, it's a tornado. if it's a straight line pattern, they know it was damaging straight line winds. back here, we have winds gusting up behind the cold front and some pretty dangerous waves. already at 6:00 today, the surf advisory began. don't turn your back on the water if you like to head there

if you're planning on getting a test here at sfo, they're all sold out until december 1st. muni says one of its operators has died from coronavirus. muni did not release the person's name but said they had been on long-term leave. the head of muni added the person had not come into contact with anyone in months. since the pandemic started nearly 100 employees have tested positive. the number of people in the hospital because of covid-19 surged in california by more than 80% in the last two weeks. and that is the word from the state health secretary. he says pressure on hospitals will continue with some intensive care units nearing capacity. 45 california counties are in the most restrictive purple tier. he's encouraging everyone who is planning on having a large get-together to scale it back. >> i think this is an important one to consider. call that audible and make a decision to do something a little different and decide not

to gather with as big a group as before and consider doing it with just your household. >> he gave some pointers for changing plans saying be direct, honest and offer alternatives and don't feel pressured. new details on the covid-19 vaccine. rite-aid says it will offer it to customers at no cost. rite-aid partners with the cdc as an official provider. in an email to customers last night, the company said you could make an appointment for the first shot and it looks like this will be a two-shot series, rite-aid will send you a reminder for the second shot. the federal government is planning to distribute nearly 6.5 million doses of pfizer's vaccine within 24 hours of its approval. that could happen as soon as december 10th. so only about two weeks from now. u sa u.p.s. u.p.s. says they will partner with sterling cold to

get freezers for vaccines. and san francisco has purchased some ultra cold freede erfreeze for storage. we're hearing from the first person in the u.s. to participate in a covid-19 vaccine trial. abc7 news reporter liz pina spoke with jennifer haller. >> my arm was sore the next day. i had two doses of the vaccine, four weeks apart and each time my arm was pretty sore the next day. >> she participated in moderna's vaccine trial and received the injection march 16th. moderna says common side effects are fatigue, chills, headache and muscle pain. an infectious disease specialist at ucsf says these are normal vaccine symptoms. >> 25% to 50% of people may feel mild side effects after the first dose. >> pfizer and moderna say their vaccines are more than 90% effective. more than 70,000 people

team first broke in october. an unemployment scam involving serial killers, rainipists rai t murders. up to 1 million intended to help californians who lost their jobs due to covid-19 has now been stolen. so from march to august, 35,000 claims have been filed in the name of state prison inmates. scott peterson is one of the names used in this scam. it includes 133 inmates currently on death row. the state didn't catch this because of a lack of cross examining systems. >> we need to look at why we're not cross referencing. if there's a statute that prevents cross referencing, clearly that has to be changed. >> nine district attorneys across the state signed the letter to governor newsom requesting help on what they say is an urgent matter.
