this is abc 7 news. we were disappointed obviously, and yeah, the first thing we thought of was was there a covid outbreak. >> a scramble in the north bay. a restaurant is forceed to cancel all of its thanksgiving orders after an employee tested positive for covid-19. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thank you for joining us'll il fornaio in corte madera is temporarily closed. dozen people who preordered thanksgiving meals caught completely off guard. as abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard explains health officials are now busy doing contact tracing. >> reporter: cleaning crews were disinfecting the interior of il forna. o in court madero after a staff member tested positive for covid according to management officials. >> i made a reservation for outdoor dining. i thought this place would be okay. it's closed. >> reporter: customers found the doors locked and this note out front explaining why. >> we were disappointed

obviously. yeah, the first thing we thought of was was there a covid outbreak. >> reporter: leah burmas and her daughter are one of 42 customers who preordered thanksgiving dinner on its website. it's billed as a thanksgiving feast. but now those holiday orders can't be filled. >> we're visiting them. we were going to have an early thanksgiving today. but now they're getting some chinese food and other things as a backup. >> reporter: in an e-mail to thanksgiving customers i il fornaio said, "we have made the decision to temporarily close the restaurant to have all staff members tested. this was an extremely difficult decision as we hate to diss point you, especially on a holiday. but the health and safety of our guests and staff is our top priority." public health officials say this restaurant did the right thing by shutting down right away. now contact tracing can begin. >> our process is to reach out to the establishment, have a conversation with the person who was infected and determine who they might have had close

contact with in the course of their work life. >> reporter: dr. willis doesn't believe any recent outdoor diners were at risk. il fornaio says all customers who preordered thanksgiving meals will get a full refund. in court madero, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> look at the numbers. california had a record high increase in cases reported yesterday. 18,350, bringing the total to more than 1.1 million since the pandemic began. the positivity rate and indicator of the spread of the virus is also up. it's now at 5.9% over the past 14 days. that's an increase of 2% from two weeks ago. nationwide there's a new record for hospitalizations with more than 88,000 cases. in the south bay a big jump in covid cases means no more warnings for santa clara county business that's violate health orders. county leaders made the announcement today. covid-19 cases have been spiking in santa clara county with a record high 512 new cases reported yesterday. in the past the county waived fees and gave businesses a chance to make corrections.

that grace period has been suspended from thanksgiving day through sunday. >> we'll be looking at capacity limitations, making sure that stores aren't overcrowded, making sure that those social distancing protocols, that orange check mark has been posted and that the business is committed to doing the right thing. >> grocery stores must limit capacity to 15%. retail stores capital at 25%. the use of face coverings inside businesses will also be enforced. we've all heard the warnings and you've heard officials pleading not to travel thold season. still millions of people are doing it anyway. aaa says nearly 48 million people plan to go on a road trip. that's down a bit from last thanksgiving when 49 people hit the road. sky 7 shows you traffic this afternoon on interstate 680. the cdc issued a travel warning last week and since then nearly 5 million people have boarded airplanes. that's below prepandemic levels. yesterday the tsa screened about 900,000 people compared to nearly 2.5 million on the same

day last year. many passengers say by following safety measures they hope to stay healthy and safe. >> you can't go through life living in fear. we just can't. so we've got to continue on living and going and stepping out. >> we didn't travel for the longest time. and you know, eventually we feel like we just kind of have to get out. >> people traveling to california are advised by the state to quarantine for two weeks. in the north bay the community of fairfax is reeling tonight in response to a video posted on social media. it shows the confrontation between a fairfax resident and a visitor who wandered through town yesterday putting up stickers of swastikas. abc 7 news reporter wayne friedman spoke with noah moen today, who many are calling a social justice hero. >> reporter: in fairfax marin county it's very clear that they wear progressive politics on their proverbial sleeves. everywhere. which makes this visit from an out of towner yesterday all the more brazen to locals. >> let me see your stickers.

19-year-old from livermore. though they detained him, they would not release his name. they've already sent charges to the marin county district attorney's office. hate crimes, vandalism. is that video evidence? >> it is. it will be included. >> reporter: fairfax police say they want to send the message that they will not tolerate such behavior here. that is a seconded motion to the 21-year-old with a motion as fast as the two fists he didn't use. >> it's just right and wrong. i'm not a hero. i'm just doing what's right zblip want to see you get on that bus and get the [ bleep ] out of my city, bro. >> reporter: in fairfax wayne friedman, abc 7 news. in the east bay crews are expected to be out until tomorrow morning in walnut creek repairing a pipeline that was leaking gasoline this morning. this is along the broadway extension, which is now closed. the pipe has been shut down. police say there is no danger to the public, nothing to worry about. crews seem to have made progress digging this afternoon. but neighbors tell us crews may need to cut down a tree to get better access.

we're learning new details about the suspect in a deadly stabbing at a san jose church serving as a homeless shelter. police say the man has a long criminal history and was deported three times. abc 7 news reporter kris reyes tells us the mayor and police chief say this was a failure of the system. >> the suspect is fernando jesus lopez. he is homeless and has been a

frequent guest at grace and has taken shelter there in the past. >> reporter: the 32-year-old suspect is accused of stabbing five people at grace baptist church sunday night. two were killed. three remain in the hospital in critical condition. chief eddie garcia and mayor sam liccardo held a joint press conference to voice their extreme disappointment that lopez was out on the streets in the first place. >> on three prior occasions lopez had been deported and then ultimately returned to the united states. i cannot understand why a defendant with multiple prior convictions for domestic violence was released without bail on a new domestic violence arrest this june. over the strong objections of our district attorney. >> reporter: lopez's criminal history also includes disturbing the peace, providing false information to an officer, resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon. >> in this case i'm told that the county received an i.c.e. detainer request but did not notify i.c.e. of the release. >> reporter: chief garcia and

liccardo say they're speaking out to highlight systemic failures both in the criminal justice system and on providing individuals with safe and secure shelter. >> multiple system failures led to this moment. >> and i want to make this abundantly clear. the actions of this suspect in no way reflect that of our diverse, beautiful immigrant community that we have in san jose. >> reporter: police believe lopez was on drugs, but they're still awaiting toxicology results. police don't believe that the crime was bias motivated. four of the victims were community members experiencing homelessness. one was a city employee. lopez remains in police custody. in san jose kris reyes for abc 7 news. president-elect joe biden delivered a somber prethanksgiving message to americans this morning. >> i know the country's grown grown weary of the fight. we need to remember, we're at war with the virus, not with one another, unwith each other. this is the moment where we need

to steel our spines, redouble our efforts, and recommit ourselves to the fight. >> speaking from wilmington, delaware the president-elect pledged to tap the powers of the federal government to change the course of the disease once he's in office. he says he is hoping the news of the vaccine will convince americans to wear masks and take other precautions. two local sisters may be advising the biden-harris team during the administration's first 100 days. michelle and ashley montrosa's brother shawn was killed by vallejo police in june as we've reported many times. as abc 7 news i-team reporter melanie woodrow explains, the sisters had the opportunity to they're their story with policy advisers. >> reporter: sisters michelle and ashley monterosa have been on a crusade for nearly six months. >> we need to have accountability for police violence. >> reporter: on june 2nd a vallejo police officer shot and killed their brother smaun. the officer fired from the back seat of an unmarket vehicle, hitting and killing monte sf rosa who was outside a

walgreen's where there had been a looting. vallejo police say he was crouched down in a half kneeling position moving his hands toward his waist area revealing what appeared to be the butt of a handgun. it turned out to be a hammer. earlier this week the grassroots law project invited the sisters to be on a call with the biden-harris transition team to discuss criminal justice policy proposals with the new administration. >> i was a little bit taken aback. one of the members of his transition team was like you know, these are great policies, these are great changes but they sound very localized. >> this is not a local issue. this is going on countrywide. police brutality and police violence is happening in every state. >> reporter: also on the call san francisco district attorney chasea boudin who that same day announced manslaughter and weapons charges against a former san francisco police officer for allegedly shooting and killing an unarmed man in 2017. boudin said it was the first prosecution against a law enforcement officer in san francisco's history. the sisters say solano county district attorney krishna abrams

57 in livermore. as you take a look at the live doppler 7, everything is going up and over into the pacific northwest. we are in the clear as we head toward tomorrow. the winds are strongest at the higher elevations right now. 26 out of the northwest on mount tam. and they're going to get stronger as we head toward midnight. you will notice around 30 miles an hour at the lower elevations even fairfield as we go into tomorrow morning. still gusty. although the winds will subside right around the time you may be sitting down outside with your families or friends to eat lunch. and as we go into tomorrow night the winds pick up again and will get gusty, gusting to 33 miles an hour in calistoga, 30 in fairfield at 11:00. a lovely view from our santa cruz camera right now in case you're heading to the beach tomorrow just be careful. surf's up right now. 16-footers around point arena. high surf advisory until noon tomorrow. could see the swells as high as 24 feet. first thing tomorrow morning near freezing to below freezing in the north bay. places like ukiah, lakeport.

sfrit-based twitter is going to let you ask for those little blue checkmarks once again. twitter says it will start reviewing applications in 2021 under newly released guidelines. the blue check means twitter has verified a user's identity. twitter is also updating its rules on when identification badges will be revoked, like if a verified user changes their name or bio to mislead people of their true identity. in the east bacon cord is making it easier for shoppers to support local businesses this holiday season. the city and the local chamber of commerce launched a gift card program today. cards can be purchased and redeemed at three dozen concord businesses. and the list is still growing. this is the year to help support local businesses, which are struggling because of the pandemic. >> a lot of people try to figure out how to actually shop local but to buy those giefts that make it work it's not always easy. the other thing is not everybody has the abilities to do gift cards.

holidays, what kind of expectations they have, their limits, their boundaries, and what they need to feel safe. >> reporter: cleveland clinic psychologist dr. susan albers says a lot of her patients have expressed feelings of guilt about skipping family parties this year. she says there's nothing wrong with wanting to protect your personal health. the same goes for those hosting a family gathering. don't be afraid to set boundaries for guests. if you prefer they wear a mask, just politely let them know it's for everybody's safety. >> we create a lot of scenarios in our minds about how the holidays are going to play out. and sometimes we create the worst case scenarios. remind yourself that they are possible but not probable. and focus on the positive things that the holidays can bring to you. >> reporter: dr. albers says the upsaid of everything going on is that this year you can forgo some of your usual spints like traveling or cook a big holiday dinner. instead she suggests you focus on your own health, your own
