obviously. yeah, the first thing we thought of was was there a covid outbreak. >> reporter: leah burmas and her daughter are one of 42 customers who preordered thanksgiving dinner on its website. it's billed as a thanksgiving feast. but now those holiday orders can't be filled. >> we're visiting them. we were going to have an early thanksgiving today. but now they're getting some chinese food and other things as a backup. >> reporter: in an e-mail to thanksgiving customers i il fornaio said, "we have made the decision to temporarily close the restaurant to have all staff members tested. this was an extremely difficult decision as we hate to diss point you, especially on a holiday. but the health and safety of our guests and staff is our top priority." public health officials say this restaurant did the right thing by shutting down right away. now contact tracing can begin. >> our process is to reach out to the establishment, have a conversation with the person who was infected and determine who they might have had close

contact with in the course of their work life. >> reporter: dr. willis doesn't believe any recent outdoor diners were at risk. il fornaio says all customers who preordered thanksgiving meals will get a full refund. in court madero, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> look at the numbers. california had a record high increase in cases reported yesterday. 18,350, bringing the total to more than 1.1 million since the pandemic began. the positivity rate and indicator of the spread of the virus is also up. it's now at 5.9% over the past 14 days. that's an increase of 2% from two weeks ago. nationwide there's a new record for hospitalizations with more than 88,000 cases. in the south bay a big jump in covid cases means no more warnings for santa clara county business that's violate health orders. county leaders made the announcement today. covid-19 cases have been spiking in santa clara county with a record high 512 new cases reported yesterday. in the past the county waived fees and gave businesses a chance to make corrections.

that grace period has been suspended from thanksgiving day through sunday. >> we'll be looking at capacity limitations, making sure that stores aren't overcrowded, making sure that those social distancing protocols, that orange check mark has been posted and that the business is committed to doing the right thing. >> grocery stores must limit capacity to 15%. retail stores capital at 25%. the use of face coverings inside businesses will also be enforced. we've all heard the warnings and you've heard officials pleading not to travel thold season. still millions of people are doing it anyway. aaa says nearly 48 million people plan to go on a road trip. that's down a bit from last thanksgiving when 49 people hit the road. sky 7 shows you traffic this afternoon on interstate 680. the cdc issued a travel warning last week and since then nearly 5 million people have boarded airplanes. that's below prepandemic levels. yesterday the tsa screened about 900,000 people compared to nearly 2.5 million on the same

we're learning new details about the suspect in a deadly stabbing at a san jose church serving as a homeless shelter. police say the man has a long criminal history and was deported three times. abc 7 news reporter kris reyes tells us the mayor and police chief say this was a failure of the system. >> the suspect is fernando jesus lopez. he is homeless and has been a

frequent guest at grace and has taken shelter there in the past. >> reporter: the 32-year-old suspect is accused of stabbing five people at grace baptist church sunday night. two were killed. three remain in the hospital in critical condition. chief eddie garcia and mayor sam liccardo held a joint press conference to voice their extreme disappointment that lopez was out on the streets in the first place. >> on three prior occasions lopez had been deported and then ultimately returned to the united states. i cannot understand why a defendant with multiple prior convictions for domestic violence was released without bail on a new domestic violence arrest this june. over the strong objections of our district attorney. >> reporter: lopez's criminal history also includes disturbing the peace, providing false information to an officer, resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon. >> in this case i'm told that the county received an i.c.e. detainer request but did not notify i.c.e. of the release. >> reporter: chief garcia and
