tonight. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. good evening. more than 18,000 californians have been diagnosed with coronavirus. imagine the entire town of maraga getting sick. it's the second record in five days. on saturday the record was 15,442 new cases. for perspective, over the past seven days, we've averaged fewer than 14,000 new cases. over the past two weeks, the average is roughly 11,000. here is another way to understand what's happening in this graph you can see our summer spike right there in the middle and on the right, the current surge, which eclipses anything we've experienced so far. >> in many ways, the timing couldn't be worse. today is expected to be one of the busiest days of thanksgiving travel despite numerous and repeated warnings from health agencies against traveling or gathering. let's take a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, san francisco international airport and 101 in san jose. sky 7 was over 680 in the east

abc 7 news reached out to sfo and oakland international airport and neither has signs because there are no county requirements. starting today, at california's busiest airport, that's lax, travelers need to sign a form acknowledging the state's travel advisory. people must fill it out online if they're arriving from another state or country by train or plane at lax, california will shut down outdoor dining for the next three weeks. indoor dining was banned. restaurants and bars can only offer takeout and delivery. >> it's just been devastating now that we have to close the outside, it's -- we have to tell 11 of our em plployees go home. >> los angeles county shut down overnight tv production. los angeles county has the most coronavirus cases of any county in the state and is the state's

dozens of people that ordered prethanksgiving meals were caught off guard. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard says health officials are doing the best they can at contact tracing. >> reporter: cleaning crews were disinfecting the interior of the italian restaurant after a staff member tested positive for covid according to management officials. >> i made a reservation for outdoor dining and i thought this place would be okay and it's closed. >> reporter: customers found the doors locked and this note out front explaining why. >> we were disappointed, obviously, and yeah, the first thing we thought of is there a covid outbreak? >> reporter: they are one of 42 customers that preordered thanksgiving dinner. on the website, it's built as a thanksgiving feast but now those holiday orders can't be filled. >> we're visiting them. we were going to have an early thanksgiving with this but now they're getting some chinese food and other things for us as

he's one of tens of thousands of californians struggling to get unemployment. claims were successfully paid out under the names of tens of thousands of prison inmates across the state since march. how exactly? >> the information is being shared to people on the outside. so it's not just the inmates that are involved, it people on up outside because people have to receive the money. >> reporter: san francisco district attorney is one of the lead investigators. she explains most inmates are asking partners outside the prison to file an unemployment claim with their social security number. >> make a phone call to, say, their friends or family and say can you file a claim on my behalf? we know that's happening because of jail communications. they often times can use the jail phones to make the claims. they can use contraband phones, meaning illegal phones. >> reporter: from there the edd debit cards are sent to an address criminals stake out to access the money. in a few rare cases, the money is sent directly to the prisons. from march to august 35,000

claims have been filed in the names of california state prison inmates including the names of 133 inmates on death row like scott peterson. >> is there any evidence to suggest scott peterson is involved in this? >> clearly, the claims were filed under individual's names. >> reporter: but as she pointed out, just because peterson's name is listed, doesn't prove he's directly involved. >> because john doe's name is on the list does not mean john doe did it himself. it could be he was involved or someone else took his identity and did it on his behalf. >> reporter: governor newsom said they will launch a task force to support investigations by local district attorneys. >> the governor's response is i'm going to set up a task force. just now? another task force? another strike team?team?team? i mean, mr. governor, get your head out of the french laundry and do your job. >> reporter: jim patterson sits

city, bra. we're learning details about the suspect in a deadly stab inome san jose. it happened sunday night at grace baptist church. the suspect has a long criminal history and deported three times. abc 7 news reporter kris reyes says this was a failure of the system. >> reporter: the suspect is fernando lopez. he's homeless and has been a frequent guest at grace and taken shelter there in the past. >> reporter: the 32-year-old suspect is accused of stabbing five people at grace baptist church sunday night. two were killed and three remain in the hospital in critical condition. chief eddie garcia and the mayor held a joint press conference to voice extreme disappointment that lopez was out on the streets in the first place. >> on three prior occasions, lopez had been deported and then ultimately returned to the united states. i cannot understand why a defendant with multiple prior

two bay area college students are partnering with a downtown san jose coffee shop to feed people in need. libby gonzalez and lauren opened this community refrigerator on north second street. it's the first community fridge in san jose. the idea is simple, anyone can drop off food to donate and anyone can grab food when they need it. >> when we first started, a i lot of people are like are you sure it's free? what is it? what's going on? it takes a bit to get the idea. there is people who come and take regularly and people who come and give regularly. >> the organizers are accepting cash donations and produce, canned food and other staples. you can find out how to help on their instagram account, san jose community fridge. there are a lot of people needing help this holiday season. some for the first time because of the impact of the pandemic. you can give where you live and make a difference this season. go to abc7news.com and you'll

usual. by the typeime i get home, everybody is mad at me for making them wait. growing up it was watching the games with my mom, my sister, my dad was never there until later. we were mad at him when he got home. it was always watching the football games and mashed potatoes, turkeys, gravy, green bean casserole all together. >> sounds good. outside of the mad people. 49ers had to get creative with the holiday charity initiative this year. usually players, they personally serve thanksgiving dinner but because of the pandemic, players like jimmy garoppolo donated money instead. the 49ers partnered with second harvest food bank, clover and safe way to give dinners to 700 families in need. each included an autographed card signed by the players that donated the meal. nice touch by the 49ers there helping out. soccer legend diego has died. the star one of the greatest players in history.
