>> reporter: pre-pandemic was a library. now she leads a team of contact tracers in the city who's work load has increased to nine or ten calls a day. some of which cause hours of counseling. >> talked to a mother of a newborn who was a positive case. she was having a hard time figuring out how to isolate and take care of her newborn baby. we got emotional on the call. >> it was halloween day and i was chatting with people. i was like oh my gosh, you feel a surge is going to happen. >> it's clear that christina was right. christina, another library turned contact tracer, calls people who tested positive for covid and investigates who they may have infected. >> during that infectious period that people are maybe like, oh, i went to a party and there were like ten people and then i went to a bar. >> when you do talk to someone who's positive, are they always forthcoming about people they've been in contact with? >> i want to say yes, but not

violators a grace period. tonight millions of americans are on the move despite dire warnings from health experts. even before families gather around the table for thanksgiving, the rate of new covid cases is skyrocketing. >> reporter: ahead of thanksgiving as the number of coronavirus cases surges across the country, a final plea from health officials to stay home and keep holiday celebrations small. >> you let your guard down, you obviously have to take a mask off if you're eating or drinking. try to avoid that as much as possible. a sacrifice now could save lives. >> the covid tracking project reporting 90,000 americans are now hospitalized with covid-19, setting a record for a 16th straight day. chicago 911 dispatcher lupe lopez is one of the more than 261,000 americans to die so far from covid-19. his widow, maria, now on a ventilator fighting for her life. >> my mom's going to be in the icu for a while.

we're going to be planning a funeral for my pops. >> her son urging others to take the virus seriously and take precautions to avoid heartbreak like his. >> there's going to be more thanksgiving. there's going to be more holidays, more celebrations, more birthdays in the future. don't make this the last one. >> still millions are traveling for the holiday. >> i was negative before flying. i wasn't going to fly if i was positive. i'm going to test when you get home to keep everyone safe. >> health officials warn testing can create a false sense of security. and they're worried about a rise in cases just in time for christmas. >> given we have massively uncontrolled outbreaks already and health systems on the brink of collapse, this addition of cases is not something we can sustain. we are in a humanitarian crisis right now. >> and with those concerns additional measures are in place

coast to coast. there are check points at bridges warning travellers about quarantine rules there. and here in los angeles county there is a ban at all dining at restaurants including outdoors that just went into effect tonight. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> president-elect joe biden delivered a thanksgiving mess sang today trying to rally the country. >> i know the country's grown weary of the fight. we need to remember we're at war with the virus, not with one another, not with each other. >> on monday the president-elect and vice president-elect kamala harris are expected to receive their first high level intelligence briefing. new details in the race to create a covid-19 vaccine. a leader in that effort is admitting to a testing mistake. astrazeneca and oxford university have acknowledged a manufacturing error. some viles didn't have the right concentration of vaccine. the group of vol fears unexpectedly got a lower dose and seem to be better protected than volunteers who got two full

which often served as a they say he had been deported three times before and had a criminal record. >> i cannot understand why a defendant with multiple prior convictions for domestic violence was released without bail on a new domestic violence arrest this june. >> lopez remains in police custody. in the north bay, miller creek school district has suspended in person classes through the end of the year. marin county health officials are not recommending school closures, but the district does say it's being proactive because of a spike in the county's covid cases. students in the district's four schools will return to remote learning. covid concerns are forcing closure of parking lots other near the end of golden gate bridge. the lots will be closed from thursday to sunday. in the east bay, there is a new way that you could support
