future, this is abc 7 news. >> good evening and thank you for joining us on this thanksgiving. i'm dion lim. we are all learning a new way to holiday this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. in san francisco, this is the 51st year that glide has served thanksgiving brunch. but it is the first year that food was prepared inside boxed up and then served outdoors. the plan was to serve more than 2,000 meals including 200 box lunches delivered to homeless encampments around the city. this is obviously a thanksgiving like none other with so much uncertainty and concern about the deepening coronavirus pandemic. but as abc 7 news reporter laura anthony shows us, this year the commitment to giving is as strong as ever. >> how many people do you have? >> five. >> three? >> what better way to spend thanksgiving than to give? >> i'm here to deliver. >> to those in need, especially this year when so many are having to go without amid a

pandemic. >> we're thankful our community is doing this for us, and, you know, with these hard times with covid, it's nice to get a hot meal. >> city leaders and dozens of volunteers gather to distribute hundreds of meals in an event that was heavily modified to accommodate this year's considerable covid concerns. the meals were ready made more than 1,000 of them by oakland chef jose ortiz at his local restaurant la parla. >> we did 75, 80, people don't realize in this city and any other city, people go hungry regardless if it's thanksgiving day or not. >> this morning, i along with my staff went and handed out 500 hot meals to our curb side and unhoused communities and seniors, as well. so we want to make sure that people who didn't have vehicles or didn't live nearby here were able to get hot food, as well. >> did you get your ppe safety

kit? >> reporter: besides the food, recipients were offered personal protective equipment, masks, gloves and sanitizer to get through a holiday soon so many will forget. >> this is an unprecedented year. so many families have been without work and this is a way of us coming out in the community to help ensure we're stronger together and can close this year with a measure of strength and that's what this day has been to even more families who have been in need. >> happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: in oakland, laura anthony, a brks krrbc 7 news. new at 6:00, police are asking for help finding the people behind multiple burglaries in albany. the break-ins happened early tuesday morning. police are asking neighbors to check security camera video for anything suspicious. the thefts come at a time when covid restrictions have dealt a serious blow to businesses.

normally on this day we devote one story to the diehard shoppers who forsake their turkeys to be the first in line on black friday. but abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman discovered how different things are this year. >> reporter: residual autumn leaves, nothing romantic about that because if that's in a shopping mall, it's an empty place. imagine black friday preceded by lonely thursday unless you're willing to spend two nights in the cold for something really special. >> i'm waiting for the xbox. >> it comes out even seven years. >> reporter: color them inpatient, same as the crowd we found in san rafael, decisions, decisions here in the land of temporary evergreens. >> are you going for a certain kind of tree? >> that kind. whatever that is. >> reporter: you can credit this to another change due to covid. this lot never opened on thanksgiving, always the day after but people started showing

up just trying to beat the crowds. you selling trees? people haven't had their turkey yet. >> that's what i'm saying. they don't care. they want their trees. >> reporter: lisa 57 years in the business but never in a pandemic. what's different we asked? >> we just do our best. we try to keep everyone apart. we have added more cashiers. we have the shields. >> reporter: but social distancing while buying a tree, that's difficult when a couple needs to get their heads together. >> one that smells good. one that will fit in our apartment. >> i'm a flexible guy. whatever she likes is usually pretty cool by me. >> doesn't look dead on the inside. >> yeah. >> reporter: jordan russell and nicole favored this tree initially but their heads got turned. >> it's never that easy. we usually look at every tree in the lot. >> reporter: exactly and memorialize for the scrapbook. these trees like family members until after the holidays when they hit the curb. >> i had a feeling that, you know, it could be a finalist for

sure. >> reporter: you make it sound like a game show. >> yeah. >> reporter: and just think, by the time they get that tree home, these xbox people will still be just sitting there. >> i have all day, all night and then i guess they open at 7:00. >> reporter: parols of christmas at thanksgiving. in san rafael, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. building a better bay area means looking out for our health threatened by the coronavirus pandemic. because of the holiday, not all counties are reporting new cases. in fact, the numbers might be a little off for the next week or so. in the bay area, we are on track to hit 150,000 total cases tomorrow. san francisco now has more than 15,000 cases. alameda county today cleared a milestone themselves, more than 500 deaths and the san francisco chronicle reports that ucsf is one of seven california hospitals that will be among the first in the world for early distribution of pfizer's

covid-19 vaccine. that is once it is approved by federal officials. also, race and social justice are pillars of building a better bay area. as more people become attuned to the issues interest in historic and current films and documentaries has grown. a streaming service aimed at libraries and universities curated a collection with some of the best. new at 6:00, abc 7 news reporter david louie shows us some examples. >> reporter: the streaming service canape is available widely at universitie universities. >> the story of the negro in america is the story of america. it is not a pretty story. >> reporter: canape is working with film makers to expand the collection as the appetite for an interest in diversity inclusion and social justice expan expands. >> this is a great opportunity from a platform perspective getting this information out, educating people, sparking the kind of conversations that

really want to be having with each other to connect in a meaningful way. >> reporter: at the burkely public library, it only takes a library card for access. the director elliott warren says its digital strategy is offer more films and documentaries. the special collection resonated with patrons. >> a number of films by people of color, by black film makers have been very, very, very much of interest to our community. issues of social justice, police accountability, of access to housing have actually resonated with berkeley residents. >> there are days when you wonder what your role is in this country and future is in it. >> reporter: the subject matter can make viewers uncomfortable. the 2018 short film "skin" was an example. his focus is on the interaction between a black man and white boy. >> they make eye contact and he smiles at him and what ensues

>> this is kizmit, the dental office therapy dog. she is 13 plus years old. she's very, very calm. very, very easy going. she has no teeth, either so she really can't get into any trouble. i'm a doctor of dental services. i own a dental practice here. kizmit was so small we didn't want to leave her at home so we began to bring her to the office and patients responded so wonderfully to her. we really began to understand the benefit of having a therapy dog here in the practice. she can provide an ice breaker for what can be a very stressful moment for a patient and we feel that's very important. >> kizmit is so cute. >> yeah. >> oh, kizmit. what's it like being a dental therapy dog? i like having a dog in my lap. >> when we adopted her, she was diagnosed with a lot of abscess

teeth, severe pdental disease s we had the rest of her teeth removed. it is ironic we'd end up with a little mascot that is toothless to show patients the ultimate bad result of not caring for your teeth. kizmit works two days a week but she seems happy to do it. believe it or not, we have patients that schedule their appointments based on whether kizmit works that day or not. everyone knows she's around and available for comfort and many, many people take advantage for that. >> kizmit is precious and i think he said tooth days a week. i love it. breezy today and what about

this is our first thanksgiving without alex trebek who passed away earlier this month but the long-time jeopardy host taped a message today. >> happy thanksgiving, ladies and gentlemen. in spite of what america and the rest of the world is experiencing right now, there are many reasons to be thankful. there are more and more people extending helpful hands to do a kindness to their neighbors and that's a good thing. keep the faith. we're going to get through all of this and we will be a better society because of it. >> he is so missed. now while this year might be turning out a lot differently

than we imagined, there is still a lot to be grateful for. we spoke to people out and about in san francisco today. >> i'm grateful for my family, my home and my little dog over there. his name is domino. my dog, he helps me feel better when i'm nervous and he also makes me feel happy when i hug him. >> i'm especially thankful for my family. >> we're thankful for our family and our friends. gia, are you thankful for daddy and mommy? >> yeah. >> yeah. >> i'm thankful for my family and everything that i have like my stuff, my toys because i couldn't have not had it. >> 2020 has been a tough year just in general i feel like for everyone, so i'm grateful that, you know, i'm still here. you know what i mean, i'm

it's still pretty breezy as you climb higher in the atmosphere. here is our live view from our explorery camera at the skyline where it's 60 and in oakland, 52 mountain view and 58 san jose, gilroy 52 and 57 at half moon bay. check out this view from the east bay hills camera looking west under clear skies all across the bay and out to the coast. these are some more temperature readings. upper 50s at santa rosa and novato and napa 60 and fairfield 57, concord 56 and our view here looking across the embarcaderem cold mornings friday through sunday with possibility of frost in some of the colder inland valleys. chance of early morning drizzle on monday but after that clear skies and dry pattern will follow. overnight clear skies and low temperatures mainly in the low to mid 30s in some of the farther north locations like

for the first time in big game history, both teams enter the game winless. cal and stanford are 0-2 with one game cancelled due to covid-19. the 123rd edition of the big game will be cal's home opener at memorial stadium. it will be different. no fans allowed. not even on tight wad hill and cal will go for the second straight win in the series. instant classic last year. i was there. chase ran in the game winner on this play as cal snapped the nine-game losing streak to stanford. even the ax ceremony will be totally different. one representative from each come mimittee will be present. no crazy shenanigans and garbers aims to keep the ax. >> we have the ax now. we're not going to let that go.

we got stanford on friday. so the atmosphere is there. we're missing it because we're not really in classes and person. >> the hardest loss i personally took was last year losing to cal because the standard set here, we just beat cal. that's what we do. it hurt me pretty good losing to them. >> turkey day for the pros. washington at dallas. al mex smith. it been a quite year for cooper. dialing it up to cooper for the 54 yard touchdown. nice dallas uniforms. dallas takes the lead. spent a quiet day but a touchdown here to logan thomas. gave washington the lead. dallas just kind of fell apart late. what an athletic play. rolls in. washington wins 4 1-16. 4-7 but lead the nfc east. it is the worst division in football but one team will make the playoffs. st.
