gatherings, like my mom said. but it's still knot nice. it's still warm, an it's still family. >> in san francisco, kate larsen, abc7 news news. in the south bay, san jose's downtown is lit up this evening. it is a smaller display than usual. but the message of hope is bigger than ever. abc7 news reporter kris reyes talked to the people behind the showcase about why they were determined to give the community some holiday cheer. >> awesome, cool. >> reporter: up close it almost feels like any other holiday. zoom out and you'll notice the difference. on any other year, this plaza would be bustling with people. vendors, the skating rink would be open. not this year. >> we're having a holiday like no other. >> reporter: but the san jose downtown association was determined to give the community something. so they rallied up some sponsors, built glowing arches, lit up the streets and put up this 26-foot modern christmas tree as a centerpiece. >> there is no way we're going to leave the heart of the city dark, especially during this time when everyone needs to be

uplifted. >> reporter: the luzano family couldn't be more grateful. coming to the park is a family tradition, just one more thing canceled by covid-19. >> it feels like there is still a sense of joy. there is still a reason to remember how this time of year is very celebratory. >> reporter: so there is actually a reason why the san jose downtown association chose a less traditional tree, a message they wanted to send to the community. >> things are different this year. so this is kind of a different tree than normal. certainly it's not a traditional tree. and that's kind of what we were going for. something a little more fun and ecolle eclectic. >> i like going under it. and just skating through it. >> reporter: does it make you feel like christmas is here? >> yeah. >> reporter: light the holiday nights runs until january 3, free of charge at plaza de cesar chavez. kris reyes for abc7 news. >> it creative. another tradition, christmas in the park opens tomorrow. it's also been reimagined due to the pandemic.

for the first time in 41 years, the event will be held at history park. and to avoid crowds, it will be a drive-through experience. at night, tens of thousands of pixels will be on display, along with a choreographed light show set to music that you'll be able to play through you're vehicle radio. and nearly 300 christmas trees will be decorated by community groups. reservations are now available online for a small entry fee to help cover costs. anymore. -person black friday shopping is still hours away, but some people are already waiting in line. today many major retail stores stayed closed for the thanksgiving holiday. most black friday deals started earlier in the week or have been moved online because of covid restrictions. but many repetailers still plano open early tomorrow morning. one man in san jose has been in line outside of a gape stop since yesterday at 8:00 p.m. >> we're out here waiting for the ps5. it's the next generation console. it comes out every seven years. it's a huge deal for us.

it was freezing last night. i think it was 35 degrees. i had this. i had a bunch of jackets on, my blanket, and it was still freezing. >> they are die-hard. large retailers like macy's, walmart and best buy plan to open with restrictions as early as 5:00 a.m. now between black friday and cyber monday is another shopping holiday. maybe more important than ever this year. small business saturday. a new american express poll shows that 75% of customers plan to shop local for the holidays to support small businesses through the pandemic. experts suggest this saturday plan ahead if you're going to a store because of social distancing, you may have to wait to get in. shop owners add also check out their websites and if you don't shop on saturday, don't wait too much longer. suppliers are struggling as well. so you may want to get your order in early. amazon is giving its front line workers a $300 holiday bonus, but it comes as the company faces threats of a black

will be among the first in the world for early distribution of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine. once it is approved by federal officials. now despite warnings not to travel, more than six million people passed through airport tsa checkpoints before thanksgiving. with nose travel statistics, doctors are urging americans to remain cautious and not gather in large groups. the cdc predicts if current trends continue, up to 321,000 americans could die of covid-19 by december 19th. abc news reporter romina puga has a look at where the numbers stand now. >> reporter: the holiday week has been sobering for many families as nearly 90,000 americans are currently hospitalized with the virus, separated from their loved ones. kate thompson, an icu nurse in ohio, spent her holiday in the hospital, hooked up to machines to help her breathe. >> i just feel it's important for people to realize that it's -- it's more than what a lot of people are making it out to be.

>> reporter: hospitalizations are on the rise in 47 states. inside mercy oklahoma hospital, doctors say they're used to seeing one death a week. now they're handling as many as four per day. >> it's an overwhelming experience. it's an overwhelming problem. it's an overwhelming disease. >> reporter: and over the holiday, a record number of families looking for help to avoid going hungry in the struggling economy. >> i have nothing at home. seriously, nothing. >> so this is a huge help today. >> it sure is. >> reporter: feeding america projects more than 50 million people will face food insecurity this year. 15 million more than last year. and hundreds of thousand apply for unemployment with congress on thanksgiving recess, c.a.r.e.s. act benefits are set to run out at the end of the year. in los angeles, romina puga, abc news. bay area residents are not exempt from economic concerns. and in the east bay, the commitment to giving back was as strong as ever. oakland leaders and dozens of

volunteers gathered to distribute hundreds of meals. the event was heavily modified to accommodate this year's covid restrictions. more than a thousand meals were made by oakland chef jose ortiz at his oakland restaurant la perla. >> i think we did about 75, 80, people don't realize in this city and any other city, people go hungry, whether it's thanksgiving day or not thanksgiving day. >> it is a problem all year. recipients were also offered personal protective equipment like mask, gloves, and sanitizer to help them get safely through the holidays. in san francisco, this is the 51st year that glide has served thanksgiving brunch, but it is the first year that food was prepared inside, boxed up, and then served outdoors. that plan was to serve more than 2,000 meals, including 200 boxed lunches delivered to homeless encampments around the city. and as you can see, all of that sunshine looking seasonal but wind different.

spencer christian joins us live at home with a little more on our forecast. hi, spencer. >> okay, hey, dion. it was a windy day for at least part of the day. the winds have calmed down now at the surface. but up in the higher elevations and the hills and mountains, it's still quite gusty. take a look at this. we have gusts up to 29 miles per hour atlas peak. 39 at mount saint helena. breezy above 3,000 feet but calm at the surface. nice view from the exploratorium camera, looking back at part of the city skyline. it is currently 53 degrees in san francisco. oakland 54. down to 40 at mountain view. 46 san jose. some locations are not reporting the usual hourly report. probably because of wind affecting the technology. that's just my guess. 41 degrees right i know at half moon bay. and looking westward from the east bay hills camera under clear skies, 57 at santa rosa. novato down to 41. 47 at napa. fairfield not reporting. 57 at concord.

47 at livermore. and the view from the rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero will also allow us to see the forecast features. cold mornings lie ahead tomorrow through sunday with possible frost in some of our inland valleys. a chance of drizzle early monday. otherwise we're looking at a dry and mild pattern all the way through the next seven days. look for clear skies holding on overnight. and in the absence of clouds, temperatures are going to drop into the chilly range. low lowes in the low 30s in some north bay locations. mid- to upper 30s in most inland valleys including the east bay and south bay. look for lows in the low to mid-40s and low 40s on the coast. tomorrow sunny skies again, with high temperatures in the south bay. mainly in the mid-60s. 64 santa clara and san jose. low to mid-60s on the peninsula. up to about 64 at san mateo and redwood city. we'll see mainly upper 50s on the coast at half moon bay,
