per hour, some of us nonexistent. that's one of the biggest differences, plus the air is significantly drier, that's why it is cooler this morning and will be colder this weekend. 58 at half moon bay. 61 to 68 the afternoon temperatures. investigators think this apartment fire in fremont may have started in a kitchen on thanksgiving. it's displaced 17 people. those flap flames broke out ju after 7:00 last night on an apartment building near fernal sreet. the fire damaged the unit it started in and damaged eight more. today is black friday, it will be like nothing we have seen before. a lot of people are turning to the internet for deals instead of in-tern shperson shopping bu everybody. liz kreutz is at the best buy in dublin.

what's going on out there? >> good morning, kumasi and reggie. i think we're all wondering what is black friday going to look like this year. the doors just opened here at this best buy in dublin. they just put a pause on some folks going inside as you can see. they're trying to make sure people have space to social distance, spread out, you know, we're not seeing the huge, huge long lines we're used to seeing, but it's a decent turnout for the middle of a pandemic. folks here are wearing their masks. they're letting more folks in now as they slowly make their way inside. none of those huge giant mad rushes that we're used to seeing. but i did speak to one of the first people in line this morning about why they decided to get up. what their morning has been like. take a listen. >> you know, surprisingly it's really empty. because of the pandemic, i thought black friday would be nice. it's pretty nice.

we went to gamestop and came here after. >> you have been making the rounds. >> trying to get that ps5. >> all right. so those guys said that they wanted a ps5. couldn't find it at a gamestop they swung by, so they decided to give up and come to best buy where they hope to get a good deal on a tv. it's a pretty line long. for black friday, we're seeing a decent turnout. but it's nothing crazy. i was talking to the security guard here who worked several black fridays, he said it's pretty subdued. if you're thinking about coming out and going shopping and were worried about whether to feel safe or not, that's the end of the line. it's pretty subdued. at the same time best buy is offering the same deals online as they are in store. you can always shop online. that was it. you watched the line go by. back to you.

track to reach 150,000 cases very soon. the "san francisco chronicle" reports that ucsf is one of seven california hospitals that will be among the first in the world for early distribution of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine once it's approved by federal officials. and despite warnings not to travel, more than 6 million people passed through airport tsa checkpoints around the country before thanksgiving. the cdc says the nation's death toll could top 321,000 in the next three weeks. abc7 news reporter mona kosar abdi gives us a look at how hospitals are coping. >> reporter: this morning hospitals sounding the alarm as icus reach record highs for the 17th day in a row. >> it's an overwhelming experience. it's an overwhelming problem. it's an overwhelming disease. >> reporter: nearly 90,000 americans in hospitals across the nation, almost double the number hospitalized at the begins of the month. mercy hospital in oklahoma

giving us a look. packed hallways and exhausted doctors and nurses. >> in april we had one hallway on the floor that had covid patients. now we have four hallways worth of patients with covid. >> reporter: one texas county reporting for the fourth time this month that they have no available icu beds. the staff there prioritizing covid patients. those non-pandemic related illnesses are now being sent to other areas. cities now scrambling to get ahead of the next wave of cases, which are expected to spike in the wake of thanksgiving. officials in the st. louis area are imposing new mask mandates. the move comes amid an unsuccessful campaign by health officials in the area to get governor mike parson to require masks statewide. mona kosar abdi, abc news, new york. you can keep track of the coronavirus impact any time on our website. we have a tool to figure out the latest guidelines in each county

it's available on abc7news.com and on the abc7 news app. let's talk about what's going on weather-wise. when you step out most of us are cooler this morning. the east bay hills and into places like livermore and concord in the valleys, up a degree to two to three degrees compared to yesterday. 20 degrees in novato. let's go down to the south bay, we have 32 in morgan hill and san teresa. frosty conditions there. getting close in places like alum rock and mountain view and campbell at 35. wouldn't be surprised if some localized frost is developing there. 38 officially in san jose. look at that, 39 in newark. alameda, 52. 50 in san francisco. but then you got 38 in lafayette. the frosty conditions getting close in novato at 33. we have our microclimates working this morning. here's a look from sutro tower. it's not bouncing much at all compared to yesterday.

warnings, thankfully we didn't because of the limited amount of rain we did receive so far. 40s and 50s in the they're making snow at night in tahoe because mother nature is not providing any. this morning thousands of people in southern california are waking up without power. so cal edison shut off electricity to 8,000 customers to reduce the risk of fires start ed by fires equipment. wind gusts could reach 75 miles per hour there today. now that thanksgiving is behind us, a lot of families are looking forward to christmas and some are already shopping for that perfect tree. the abc7 news was at the nonzini tree lot, it is usually closed on thanksgiving but the owner decided to open it up and allow people to beat the crowds. the owner added protocols to make sure all customers are safe while browsing. >> we do our best.

wife debra recently adopted her from muttville senior dog rescue in san francisco. dr. garrett started bringing her into work because she's so small and he didn't want to leave her home. patients love her. and some book their appointments based on whether kisme it will be there. >> it's ironic we could end up with a mascot who is toothless who could show our patients the ultimate bad result of not caring for your teeth. >> what is it like being a dental therapy dog? >> i like having a dog in my lap. >> kismet does not have formal therapy dog training but she also doesn't have any teeth. she currently works two days a week. semi-retired. i like her. >> look at her little sweater. >> me, too. >> she also seems to have really taken to her new owner. i love that. muttville is a great place if you haven't been. >> that's so cute. >> i know mike likes it.

north much longer now that one high pressure turned into two, which has turned into three. so just about the entire country is dry except for right along the gulf coast and up into the great lakes. eventually that will push off to the east coast. those areas will be dry. it's not just us, it's almost the entire lower 48. here's a look at our high temperatures today with calmer conditions. 58. that's the cool spot in half moon bay. santa cruz at 64 along with san jose, oakland, san mateo. i can keep going on. san rafael. 63 in livermore and concord. richmond about 63. tonight low 30s to mid 30s in the deepest valleys. 40s will be the uncommon temperature tonight as for oakland, san mateo, san francisco, half moon bay and santa cruz are some of the few communities that will stay in the 40s. expect a repeat performance on sunday. chance of high clouds monday. tuesday, wednesday, thursday

here. we're told they're limping capacity inside but they're not close to hitting that at this point. i want to show you the line from earlier. this was live at 5:00 a.m. there was a decent amount of people in line. maybe 75 people or so who waited in the cold to get in and get those good deals. a lot of people told us they were coming for a good deal on a tv. here's what one guy told us. he was second in line. >> we woke up, went to gamestop, there's two people in front already there ready to get the ps5. we were wishing to get there earlier. so we went around a lot of places, and we just came here, decided, all right, let's just stay here, get a tv at the best buy. >> now, reggie, i know you asked me this earlier about the play station because a lot of people want that ps5. best buy does not sell it in the

cocoa. they look cold. >> that does not look fun. i want to tell you there are some troubling signs for economic recovery even as we see online retail sales surging for black friday as well as for cybermonday. elizabeth schulze has more on how the pandemic is affecting families across the country. >> reporter: good morning. millions of americans are in desperate need this holiday season as the pandemic continues to put unprecedented strain on the u.s. economy. the economic toll of the virus is mounting. the latest report from the labor department showing 778,000 americans filed new unemployment claims last week with more than 20 million people now collecting some form of jobless benefits. an estimated 50 million people are facing food insecurity, up

washington. bay area residents are not exempt from the economic concerns, but in the east bay the commitment to give back this year was as long as ever. oakland city leaders and volunteers gathered to distribute hundreds of meals yesterday. the event was heavily modified to accommodate covid restrictions. oakland chef jose ortiz made more than 1,000 meals at his local restaurant. >> i think we did 75, 80 turkeys. people don't realize in this city people go hungry regardless if it's thanksgiving or not thanksgiving day. >> organizers handed out things like masks, gloves, sanitizer to help people get through the holidays safely. in san francisco, this is the 51st year that glide served thanksgiving brunch. but it was the first year that the food was prepared inside boxed up and served outdoors. organizers plan to serve 2,000 meals including 200 boxed lunches delivered to homeless

encampments around the city. san francisco's police chief, sheriff and fire chief joined lawmakers in giving back to seniors. the self help for the elderly thanksgiving luncheon held in chinatown's portsmouth's square is usually sit-down but instead that changed. meals were delivered to more than 1,000 seniors across the city. >> it's an honor for us in the fire department to serve every community in this city. >> this has been a very, very hard year for so many of us. and i know that we're going to get through it and be together. it's a different thanksgiving but we'll bet this pandemic. >> personal protective equipment was also directed with those miles. you can make a difference. give where you live right now. head to abc7news.com, you'll find a donation link on the home page.

two holidays displays in the south bay. first let's check in with mike for our forecast. >> thank you. hi, everybody. we'll check with some local temperatures. liz, she's out in dublin. it's 35 degrees right now at that best buy. you can see why those folks were bundled up. temperatures are in the mid to upper 30s throughut the tri valley. we have 40s heading up towards concord and pleasant hill and 43 in lafayette and mid to upper 40s out highway 4 in northern contra costa county. 38 right now in san jose. look at that, 35 in mountain view. 34 in novato. a 45 in oakland, 50 in san francisco. also in pacifica some of the mildest temperatures. we have breezes in the highest elevations, most of us are dealing with calm conditions this morning. if you're traveling through 24 or the sub sunol grade, it may

be breezy this morning but nothing like yesterday. for those of you that have to commute, we've got cold weather this morning. calm conditions and mild temperatures during the afternoon hours. want to look at the drought monitor. last week's rain, really didn't help out too much, did it? we haven't changed at all as you look around. extreme across the north bay, severe for most of us. dry in the south bay. the state is getting drier across the southern part of the state. that's where the drought has expanded as you can see. we're starting to get abnormally dry almost everywhere in southern california. that's why they're dealing with red flag warnings today while we're not as dangerous. it's time for traffic. guess who is in town in the studio? >> i'm here. >> sue, appreciate it. >> it's good to be here. it's light out there as you

might imagine for this friday morning. we'll look at san rafael, the traffic on 101 headed southbound across the golden gate bridge, about an 18-minute drive from novato to the bridge. bridge is clear. you have three lanes in both directions, very light traffic up and over the waldo grade. green sensors around for our early morning commuters out of tracy. no delays at all on westbound 580 until you get into the dublin/pleasanton area where we had a car overturned. it looks like they may have cleared that out of the lanes, over to the right-hand shoulder but the emergency crews were blocking the two right lanes, westbound 580 at hacienda. it looks clear and it is green out there and green with our sensors means at the limit.
