you can see some people in there starting to check out. they were lining up yesterday afternoon and earlier this morning, macy's in new york's herald square opening its doors letting shoppers in for an early morning rush. more on those big bargains coming up. >> it will be a black friday like no other. that's for sure. we begin with the latest on the coronavirus emergency. cases edging closer to 13 million and more than 263,000 have died. right now covid surging across the country. a record 90,000 people hospitalized with the virus and reports growing of hospitals and frontline workers being pushed to the limit. abc's victor oquendo is at a testing center in miami beach. victor, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, whit. testing sites like this one are set to re-open after being closed for the holiday. with so many people ignoring the warnings and gathering on thanksgiving, there is some serious concern that in the coming days and weeks there could be even more pressure on our already strained hospitals. this morning, hospitals sounding the alarm as icus reach record highs for the 16th day in a row. more than 90,000 americans in hospitals across the nation almost double the number hospitalized at the beginning of the month. mercy hospital in oklahoma giving us an inside look.

packed hallways and exhausted doctors and nurses. >> back in april we just had one hallway on the floor with covid patients. now we have four hallways worth of patients with covid. >> reporter: outside the physical strain of long hours, doctors struggling to cope with the mental toll. >> because we're seeing death every day. we're seeing people dying and in the past we had one patient dying a week, two patients dying a week. now we have four or five dying every day. >> reporter: similar tales across the nation. one texas county reporting for the fourth time this month they have no available icu beds with the focus currently on treating covid patients. those with other illnesses being sent to nearby houston with cases and hospitalizations on the rise and the imminent surge from holiday travel on the horizon a new staggering projection from the cdc. the u.s. death toll could top 321,000 over the next three weeks.

health care workers with a sober reminder. >> i can tell you there's a lot of people suffering and it's not just about dying. those numbers are the people that are dead. there are countless more that will have lifelong disabilities from this, not just physical, mental but also financial. >> reporter: icu nurse kate thompson who spent her thanksgiving in the hospital, though not caring for covid patients, as she is one herself. >> i've been that caregiver trying to give comfort and now i'm that patient where i'm now isolated. did i think i'd be dependent on oxygen, short of breath every time i get up to go to the bathroom? no, it's been a fight. it's really been a fight. >> reporter: state and local officials across the country have the tough task of working on a plan to distribute a vaccine once one is available. the way one doctor put it, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but it's still a very long tunnel. eva? >> that is so true. victor oquendo for us this morning. now to holiday travel.

despite urgent warnings from the cdc more than 6 million passengers flew and tens of millions hit the road. gio benitez is at new york's laguardia airport with the latest. good morning to you, gio. >> reporter: hey, eva, good morning. yeah, many were surprised by the number of travelers we saw this week, even with that cdc warning, but now this weekend we're going to see more travelers, those passengers that traveled this week, well, they're going to have to return home. for weeks public health officials warned not to travel. but more than 6 million people still flew. tens of millions more on the roads. and while wednesday saw the most people screened at tsa checkpoints since the start of the pandemic, more than a million, air travel is still down dramatically, about 60% compared to last year. airlines burning through $180 million a day. >> certainly those who have decided to travel are going instead of maybe on a beach vacation, they're going home to their hometowns. >> reporter: train travel, a

mere fraction of 2019. amtrak says business is only up 25% of what it was before the pandemic. and travel trends are certainly different. sunday expect another busy travel day as people return home. more than a million expected at airports alone. but the record-breaking traveler numbers in this pandemic also bring fears that the virus will spread even more. dr. anthony fauci had warned here on "gma" that transmission related to thanksgiving travel and gatherings could be felt by the time we get ready for christmas. >> what we don't want to see is yet another surge, superimposed upon the surge you just described which will realize three, 3 1/2 weeks from now if we don't do these public health things. >> reporter: and even more people are already making plans to travel next year. in fact, we're told right after that vaccine news hit, those -- there was a huge surge in future airline bookings, eva. >> and, gio, what major airline

is now announcing a way to start re-opening international travel? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. talking about travel to europe without a quarantine and delta is launching these new testing protocols. passengers would have to take four different covid tests throughout their journey, but they would be able to quarantine -- skip that quarantine in italy. those flights start december 19th from atlanta to rome. eva? >> gio benitez for us. over to janai. well, the nfl is experiencing a covid surge of its own. four more players and one staff member testing positive now threatening the team's game on sunday which was already pushed back from last night because of the outbreak. abc's alex presha is at the raven's m&t bank stadium in baltimore with the very latest. alex, good morning. >> reporter: janai, good morning to you. this is a mess. those four players that tested positive include one of the nfl's biggest stars, the reigning mvp and star quarterback lamar jackson.

sources telling espn's adam she she shefter now the ravens had at least 12 -- 12 players test positive for the virus this week. the team issued a statement on wednesday saying that a staff member has been disciplined for conduct -- for conduct following the recent covid-19 cases that have affected players and staff at the ravens. but this postponement of their game against their division rival, the pittsburgh steelers, adds to more than a dozen times that the nfl has had to either delay or move a game because of the coronavirus this season. >> and, alex, that ravens game against the steelers now scheduled for sunday. what are the chances that will actually be played? >> reporter: janai, it's really hard to tell right now because the nfl hasn't commented, but if you take your cues from raven head coach john harbaugh he's confirmed to espn he told players that they can't even come into the training facility until monday at the earliest. and, yes, this game was supposed

to be played in pittsburgh, but that might give you an inkling as to where this is headed, janai. >> may be a longer wait for the game. alex, thank you so much. eva, over to you. now to the latest on the transition to the new administration. president-elect biden getting ready to announce more members of his team and president trump taking questions from the press for the first time since the election. still refusing to concede. rachel scott in washington with the very latest. good morning to you, rachel. >> reporter: eva, good morning. the president lost this election by more than 6 million votes. three weeks later not admitting defeat but seemed to acknowledge he's on his way out. overnight president trump doing something he hasn't done in the more than three weeks since election day. take questions from reporters. finally committing to leaving the white house if the electoral college votes for joe biden. >> so if the electoral college does elect president-elect joe biden, are you not going to leave this building? >> just so -- certainly i will. certainly i will, and you know that. >> reporter: but still refusing to concede. >> it's going to be a very hard thing to concede because we know

there was massive fraud. >> reporter: the reality, there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, and joe biden cemented his victory with 306 electoral votes. asked whether he'd attend the inauguration -- >> i don't want to say that yet. i mean i know the answer. i'll be honest, i know the answer, but i just don't want to say it yet. >> reporter: after speaking to troops, the president briefly touching on the pandemic and a virus that killed more than 250,000 americans. trying to take credit for the speed of a coronavirus vaccine. >> the vaccines -- and, by the way, don't let joe biden take credit for the vaccines. >> reporter: but he blocked the transition of power for weeks preventing joe biden's team from having contact with the coronavirus task force and "operation warp speed." the president-elect spending his thanksgiving with family speaking with frontline workers and in a video acknowledging the hardship during the pandemic. >> history has shown and all of you have shown that there's nothing we can't do if we do it together. >> reporter: and president-elect joe biden is plowing forward with the transition. he's expected to receive his

first presidential brief on monday, and then announce members of his economic team next week. whit? >> rachel, thanks so much. we'll shift gears and talk about the big changes for black friday. with retailers trying to keep crowds down in stores, they are getting aggressive and creative online. becky worley is in our super saver command center. good morning to you. all right, what are the door busters like online versus in the stores today? >> well, it's a really different black friday like you said. many stores usually open on thanksgiving. they were closed this year because of covid. so if you are in-person shopping today, in a mall or in a store expect it to be crowded, and in the why bother department, i'm not seeing a ton of specific deals available in store that aren't available online. for example, bass pro shops has binoculars for $149, usually costing $249, so 100 bucks off. lowe's has a buy one get one

deal on tools. so can you mix and match getting two for the price of one and a standing desk from fully.com, one of those motorized ones that go up and down, $475, usually $559. that's $84 off an item that's been hard to get ahold of all year, whit. >> so you can stay in your pajamas while you get the deals. that's good to know. let's go big. what with the deals on the high dollar items this year? >> yeah, the biggest discounts come on big ticket items so if you're in the market for like a new washer or dryer, home depot has 40% off select appliances, we have seen a dryer for $698. normally it's $899. that's $201 off, an opportunity for savings. >> okay, what about the retail behemoth, amazon? >> yeah, they are very competitive and you should always price check there. but one thing to consider, a lot of amazon's own electronics, see, their biggest discounts are

good morning. i'm reggie aqui from abc7 news modernizations. investigators think that this apartment fire in fremont may have started in a kitchen on thanksgiving. 17 people now displaced. the flames broke out just after 7:00 last night if an apartment building on franciscan court. the fire destroyed the unit and also damaged eight more. the red cross is helping a majority of the displaced families. between black friday today and cyber monday, another shopping holiday, maybe more important than ever this year, small business saturday. a new american express poll shows that three out of four people plan to shop local for the holidays to support small businesses through the pandemic. experts suggest you plan ahead if you're going to a store because of social distancing, you may have to wait to get in.

happy black friday to you. i want to get right to it. i found this interesting. your company's ecommerce sales nearly doubled in the third quarter and in-store sales were also up significantly. all of this happening in a pandemic when so many businesses are struggling right now. what are the trends? what are people buying that's driving all of this? >> yeah, that is exactly what we're seeing. so first i mean i will tell you the first thing we saw immediately as soon as the pandemic hit was the focus on fitness and personal wellness. you know, as the pandemic hit, people wanted to stay fit. they want to stay healthy and strong. so we immediately saw a surge in fitness equipment. so think about the fact that people were at home and they were uncertain if they could go back to their gyms and so what they did is brought the gym to their home and so we saw an immediate surge in treadmills, bikes, weight sets, kettlebells and they said i'm going to bring

the gym back to me. so that has been certainly a trend. the second thing i'd say is running has been a huge surge for us. so running footwear has been a huge win. we have seen increased sales from brooks and hoka and asix. people want to run outside. it is an individual activity. it's healthy. it keeps you in shape and it's obviously safe. we see that as a huge win for us and it continues to trend in the marketplace. >> i think a lot of us at the desk bought the at home equipment. i bought weights from china in kilograms so i have no idea i'm actually lifting so hopefully we'll get new gear into the stores today. i know, i'm doing the math in my head. >> that's exactly right. >> so today is black friday, though, and we usually see massive lines, people waiting outside to bust through the doors. how has the pandemic changed in-store shopping this year? >> yeah, so a couple things. the first thing is we closed on

thanksgiving. that was a huge change for us. you know, we have been open on thanksgiving for years and years. we made the decision that this was the year that we were going to close. we felt it was important for our teammates to be at home with their families and spend that time enjoying the holiday. so that was the first thing we did. the second thing we did is that we extended the selling season so typically you would see black friday deals really be concentrated on one day, maybe two. we said ten days. let's do ten days of great deals. let's not crowd our stores. let's give people some space and some time to shop. that started earlier this month. it will continue until the end of this month. but we feel really good about that decision and it's really making people feel comfortable to come in our stores and shop. >> carrie, forgive me. i'm so sorry. we just have time for one more question. i want to get this in. people want to know what kinds

of deals they can expect at dick's today. some people online and some in the stores. what are the big deals out there today? >> okay, the biggest deals, let's talk about golf equipment and fitness equipment. those are huge deals. so like i said get outside, bring your gym into your house. i'd also say that we're really focused on amazing athletic apparel. as people are working at home, you know, they want to feel good and be comfortable but also want to look good. so we've got some of our biggest brands, nike and adidas, on sale during this time. so come in, check us out. i'm most excited -- i'm a mom. i've got two busy kids at home. i'm going to be checking out our own vertical brand dsg and before i leave i will be stocked up on dsg apparel for my kids and my active family. >> carrie guffey, thank you for your time. we truly appreciate it. we have to leave it there. >> thanks, happy holidays.

we want to get to the latest on two crashes. a boeing 737 max planes killing everyone aboard. now nearly two years later after being out of service, next month that jetliner is set to return to the skies and "20/20" has conducted a year-long investigation into the 737 max jets and those two horrific crashes. bob woodruff has the story. >> reporter: boeing 737 max once the fastest selling jet liner in boeing history now cleared again for takeoff. >> to that breaking news overnight from indonesia. >> reporter: october 29th, 2018, a lion air flight departing from jakarta plummeted into the java sea 13 minutes after takeoff. 189 souls aye paboard perished. four months later 157 people were killed when an ethiopian airlines flight six minutes after takeoff. both crashes blamed in part on

flight control software called mcas. the fleet grounded worldwide prompting a congressional investigation and criminal investigation by the department of justice. >> the pilots have no idea why this plane is going down against their will. so they tried to fight it back. >> yes. and this battle goes back and forth a couple dozen times. >> it was mcas, the computer against the pilot? >> yes. the way mcas was designed it was given the control authority to do it as many times as necessary. in other words, it was given the power to try to kill them, essentially, until it finally succeeded. >> reporter: since then, boeing told abc news they have made a series of meaningful changes to strengthen our company's safety practices and culture. as well as updating the flight control system, mcas now relies on two sensors and will only activate a single time and pilots will be required to complete flight simulator training. >> i do think the 737 is a safe

airplane. i have no issue about that, but this mcas thing was bad. i think that trust is going to be hard to get back at this point. >> reporter: families of those who died in the crashes are outraged. >> what really shocks me is their greed. how they have the audacity to do what they're doing. i don't know how they can still, you know, sleep at night. >> i would never enter the max. i would advise anybody not to enter that max. >> reporter: this couple lost their daughter in the ethiopian air crash and want to hold boeing accountable. >> this is her room. i can't believe that this is remained untouched for more than a year. i look for her all the time. i call her. sometimes i'm in the house by myself and just shout samya, where are you, samya? but boeing took her. >> reporter: for "good morning america," i'm bob woodruff, abc

"gma investigates" teaming up with engineers at florida atlantic university to find out where particles escape on loose fitting masks and why those who don't cover their nose, half maskers, are not protecting

anyone including themselves. first up, the popular blue surgical mask using a mannequin that can simulate a cough or sneeze by releasing liquid particles researchers loosely placing it on the mannequin's face. >> we noticed there were droplets escaping primarily from the gap along the top edge of the mask. >> reporter: now look after pushing that metal strip down around the nose to seal that gap, fewer particles escaping there but an increase in particles leaking from the sides of the mask by the cheeks. but overall a significant reduction. >> any metallic wires or strips that are present, you should always try to press it down. >> reporter: watch what happens when a mask does not cover the nose, what's called half masking. >> we see droplets escaping from everywhere. >> when you're half masking, you're keeping your nose exposed which makes it easier for the virus particles to enter. >> reporter: see the difference

back now with holiday cheer from our parent company, disney, at the magic kingdom in orlando. the park is decked out for christmas and chef kevin downing is there to share great thanksgiving leftover recipes that everyone in the family will love. so get the kids, we're going to disney world. good morning to you, kevin. >> good morning, and welcome to the walt disney world resort. >> so the disney parks are really getting into the holiday spirit. disney does christmas so well. decking the theme parks in such a big way. tell us what's going on down there. >> well, like you said, the theme parks are decked out in all of their holiday finest and our chefs are busy at work creating some delicious holiday treats. and today starts the first day of the taste of epcot's international festival of the holidays where we're featuring 18 holiday kitchens with tasty treats from across the country and around the world.

>> and speaking of tasty treats, kevin, my mouth is watering. that's why it took a beat to get to this. we'll talk about your special dish called leftover stuffing waffles. holy cow so it's got everything, the cranberry sauce, the stuffing, turkey, mashed potatoes. tell us all about this delicious meal. >> so just like everyone else, we have a giant holiday feast at epcot and we have leftovers as well. so our dish is designed to use those leftovers in a fun way that's unique and the whole family can join in and prepare. >> love that and i understand as we're chowing down here, you also have some variations on the stuffing waffle. tell us about that. >> yeah, so this is all about family and your traditions so we can do this dish in a number of different ways. if you're vegetarian, you can put the mashed potatoes in your waffle maker, macaroni and cheese, make a grilled cheese and stack it with turkey and your holiday fixings, green beans, cranberry sauce, whatever

you like. we'll get started and start with our waffle. so right now i have some leftover stuffing and we're going to make our waffle mix by adding just a little bit of heavy cream and a couple eggs. and then i'm just going to give this a good stir and try to get it incorporated really well. this will be the base for our waffles. luckily i prepared some earlier this morning so we're going to move right to our waffle maker which has been preheating and prepared with a little olive oil and cooking spray. so i'll take my waffle mix and fill my waffle maker and this waffle batter is a little bit thicker so you'll want to just go ahead and kind of push it down into the crevices of your waffle maker. and then we're going to go ahead and close our waffle maker and let it do its work. it's going to take about three to five minutes depending on your waffle maker and how you like waffles. if you like them extra crispy, leave them in a little bit
