restrictions and leaving business owners and now sports teams to figure out the next steps. >> very proud of our guys that i couldn't give them the answers and they could put it to the side. >> with that, we say good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. all of these new restrictions are made with health in mind, something we're focused on as we work to build a better bay area. more than 15,600 covid cases were reported today in california. that is the second highest count ever. numbers later this week will be a better reflection of the holiday's impact. results in many counties are lagging because of the long weekend. now, the number of people hospitalized is more than 7,400. that's more than triple when compared to a month ago on october 29th. public health experts fear that holiday gatherings and travel could worsen the covid surge. data shows hundreds of thousands of people traveled despite warnings not to.

abc7 news reporter matt boone spoke to travelers today about whether they plan to quarantine. >> reporter: there's what public health experts want and then there's the reality. people trying to see family during thanksgiving, doing whatever they can to feel like they're traveling safely. >> there was only one person behind me. >> reporter: eric shows off photos from his flight to sfo from south korea earlier this week. >> because it was so empty, i felt more comfortable to take the mask off and eat something. >> reporter: he says he's flying back to korea tonight, a country with much stricter rules. >> i'm going to be quarantined for 14 days automatically, but i need two negative tests to be able to get out. but if i have a positive test at all, then i'm put in isolation, and it will be through christmas and new year's. >> reporter: starting tomorrow, santa clara is the only bay area county to enact a mandatory quarantine for travelers coming from 150 miles away or more. california issued a travel advisory more than two weeks ago recommending anyone coming into the state self-quarantine for

two weeks, but so far officials are relying on travelers to self-police. >> got back yesterday, and airports were busy. it doesn't seem like it outside, but inside it's busy. >> reporter: dave lall works for an airline at sfo and came back after visiting family in new jersey. he says he was supposed to work today, but is playing the quarantine by ear. >> took the day off today because i did feel a little under the weather. >> reporter: meantime, he just got back from ethiopia. >> i was expecting a lot of people traveling, but i found like a few passengers on the plane. >> reporter: he says he took a test before he left but wasn't planning on quarantining. >> i didn't feel any of the symptoms. >> reporter: still the pandemic and travel advisories have significantly curbed holiday travel. yesterday about 960,000 people passed through tsa gates. that's down from 2.6 million the saturday after thanksgiving last year. in millbrae, matt boone, abc7

news. >> santa clara county announced the new quarantine restriction yesterday along with some new rules for businesses due to a fear of rising hospitalizations. professional, collegiate and youth sports are suspended until at least december 21st. this has created quite the dilemma for the 49ers, who spoke about their next steps after playing in l.a. chris alvarez joining us now with more details. >> dion, that news was both surprising and disappointing for 49ers head coach child the ban of sports in santa clara county over the next three weeks leaves the 49ers looking for a place to practice and play. right now no official decision has been made on that location. coach shanahan said safety is the top concern while finding an adequate place to practice. they also need a stadium to actually play the games. the 49ers have two scheduled,

out tonight. the san jose sharks are getting ready to start training camp and in the college ranks, there's stanford, santa clara, and san jose state. stanford has canceled the women's basketball game tomorrow. san jose state's athletic director met with county health officials today. she says they'll decide on team practices and when is where games will be played in conjunction with the school's administration and the mountain west athletic conference. san francisco and san mateo counties also have new restrictions in place. both counties moved to the purple tier today. along with restrictions, the move means a 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. curfew for nonessential activities. that goes into effect tomorrow night. in the bay area, only marin county remains in the less restrictive red tier. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard has more on how business owners are adjusting. >> you teach us by them to love the things of heaven and hold fast to what endures through christ our lord. >> reporter: san francisco catholic archbishop salvatore

in the south bay, san jose police are investigating a stabbing tonight that left one person badly injured. it happened at capital avenue near mckee road near a target store just before 8:00. a motive for the attack or if any arrests have been made have not been released. a man who died after being shot early saturday in dublin has been identified as an up and coming bay area rapper. 26-year-old alexander mark antonio jr. went by the nickname lil yase. the san francisco resident was dropped off at a pleasanton hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. he later died at eden medical center. dublin police services say they located a crime scene near the dublin pleasanton b.a.r.t. station. no arrests have been made. the university of california has extended its application deadline after its admissions website went down today. the filing period for fall 2021

bay camera looking along the bay bridge. it's 37 degrees right now in santa rosa. novato 39. napa 40. fairfield 38. 46 in concord. 42 in livermore. here's a nice view of a portion of the skyline of san francisco, part of the embarcadero center is visible there in this view from the exploratorium camera. it will be mostly clear and chilly overnight. dry, mild pattern continues in our daytime weather for the next seven days, and it will be breezy to gusty in the hills this week. we have rough surf right now. it's going to get probably a bit rougher. a beach hazard statement will be in effect from 10:00 a.m. tomorrow to 10:00 a.m. tuesday. wave heights are increasing and as that occurs, there's the risk of rip currents and sneaker waves. so on we go to a look at our future radar forecast animation overnight. notice clouds offshore passing along the coastline but not really pushing up against the coast or inland. we'll see a wave of high clouds swing by, but basically skies

will be clear overnight and they'll certainly be mainly sunny tomorrow. overnight low temperatures will drop into the low to mid 30s in some of the north bay valleys. upper 30s in the south bay. highs will range from mid-50s at the coast to low 60s around the bay shoreline to mid and upper 60s inland. as we look at our future radar going into this week coming up, you can see that there will be some weather disturbances moving into the pacific northwest but they're not going to hit the bay area. some of the northernmost parts of california could get a sprinkle or two out of these passing systems. going through the week, it looks like it's going to remain dry. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. mainly sunny days ahead and of course dry conditions and relatively mild, especially from midweek from wednesday on into the weekend. we can expect upper 60s in our inland areas, close to 70

the tree twins are back on the streets of san francisco just in time for the holiday season. our abc7 news crew team ran into the duo on the embarcadero tonight. the tree twins, as they're called, say they've been dressing up for the past five holiday seasons just for fun and to spread joy. this year's costumes are all new. the pair will be out and about until christmas eve and encourage people who run into them to snap a photo and tag them on social media. chris, you had a good joke about this. >> i don't know if i had a joke. i just was saying that they kind of look similar to the stanford fr tree. the stanford tree was not present at the big game the other day.

the thief cut a lock at the zoo's avery at 4:30 this morning. police say the suspect stuffed the birds into a duffel bag before escaping. zookeepers are urging the thief to return the birds as soon as possible because both are older and need specialized care. hawaiian officials want to woo workers to the islands with the promise that it is the best place to work from home. the group mores and chakas is aiming bring more high skilled white collar work to the state. hawaii's tourism-based economy has been decimated by the pandemic. the first round of applicants was approved today and will get round-trip airfare to honolulu. in exchange, workers must commit to being good stewards of the hawaiian islands and contribute to a local nonprofit. i could totally see spencer christian working from a beautiful island although our weather is kind of, you know, warmer, island-ish. >> it is in the daytime. of course nighttime has been kind of chilly-ish, but i'll take the daytime weather for
