help the health care system from being overwhelmed. this morning harsher restrictions are about to take effect for more americans as health officials brace for another deadly surge in coronavirus cases. >> i believe the next 6 to 12 weeks will be the darkest weeks in modern american medical history. >> reporter: a three-week stay-at-home order begins today in los angeles county. people in the county are being urged not to gather with anyone outside hetheir household, evenf it's outdoors. >> still have to go out and get the things we need, but say at home as much as we can. >> i think people aren't taking it seriously enough. i think the restrictions need to be tighter. that's the only way we'll get rid of this. >> reporter: across the country this morning nearly 100,000 people are hospitalized with the virus. in november alone more than 4 million people have been infected, more than twice the

number in october. experts warn the holiday could have been a superspreader event. >> if you're young and you gathered, you need to be tested about five to ten days later. you need to assume you're affected and not go near your grandparents without a mask. >> reporter: the tsa screening more than 8 million people over the holiday weekend. tens of millions also hit the road. dr. anthony fauci says restrictions and travel advisories will be necessary for the christmas holiday. >> what we expect unfortunately as we go for the next couple weeks into december, that we might see a surge superimposed upon the surge we're already in. when i give that message, i don't want to frighten people except to say it's not too late for us to do something about this. >> reporter: in the meantime the country's largest school system is relying on testing to get back to class. new york city's mayor's saying public el mentally schools will re-open for in-person learning next week. >> there's less concern about

the spread when it comes to younger kids. also the demands are parnents ae going through -- i feel for our parents experiencing so many challenges right now. >> reporter: with potential vaccines right around the corner preparations are under way. united airlines are practicing delivering the vaccine. hospitals in england have been told they could receive the first doses of pfizer's vaccine as early as next week. moderna is expected to follow pfizer in applying for emergency use for its vaccine. the assassination of iran's top nuclear scientist is re mid. iran is vowing to get revenge. the iranian president said iran will respond at a proper time. the killing is expected to complicate nuclear talks with iran. >> by attacking their nuclear scientist, by really escalating this effort, the iranians are going to be more compelled to get a bomb quicker. this will complicate a president biden's diplomatic efforts.

burst into flames. megan tevrizian show us how he was able to survive to tell his story. >> just wanted to say i'm okay. sort of okay. >> reporter: this morning a race car driver speaking from his hospital bed after escaping this dramatic fiery crash. one writer calling it a stunning escape that harry houdini would have struggled to match. >> it's lights out and away we go. >> reporter: during the first lap of the grand prix romain grosjean's car was sent into the barrier after clipping another car. the collision at 125 miles per hour, splitting the car in half. the vehicle instantly exploding in flames. >> that's certainly damage and a big fire there. >> reporter: grosjean spent 28 seconds trapped inside the burning car. he did not panic. he was finally able to jump through the flames in his

fire-proof suit and with the help of emergency crews he walked away from the scene with only minor burns on his hands and ankles. he didn't even break a bone. experts say he may be alive because of this safety feature called the halo which protects the driver's head during the crash. the component added only a few years ago was met with resistance from some drivers, including grosjean. this morning he's expressing gratitude for the new safety feature. >> i wasn't for the halo in the beginning, but i think it's the greatest thing we brought to formula 1. >> reporter: this is all that's left of his car after the fire. grosjean is 34. he recently announced he's leaving his team and there are rumors he'll retire from formula 1. one driver called the crash the worst in over a decade. kenneth, mona. >> glad he's okay.

in that group. what do you believe are the pros and cons? >> less than 1% of americans are in long-term care facilities. they account for 39% of coronavirus deaths. it's necessary to include elderly patients living in nursing homes as a priority. as far as health care workers, it will likely be a tiered system distributing first to those at highest risk for covid-19. >> dr. sutton, a lot of people are returning back to work after this holiday weekend and after traveling for thanksgiving. people who gathered outside their immediate households are urged to get tested for coronavirus. what do people need to know about testing timelines and the challenges we're seeing around testing right now? we've seen the lines at testing sites growing. >> this could be very confusing. if you're recently returning from travel, the cdc recommendations are you get tested three to five days after you return. the thought process is if you're
