have visibility as low as a couple hundred feet around sfo and petaluma. it's going to be here for the entire morning commute. and as you look at the breezes, this will slide slowly south so it could fill in parts of the east bay shoreline also. but i don't think it is going to quite get over to the east bay valleys. this afternoon, a touch of haze behind, but definitely sunglass weather. above average temperatures. low to mid 60s. 61 to 65 around the bay. 58 to 66 along the coast. more on this first day of meteor logical winter coming up. here's reggie. the cdc will meet with the top health advisors to discuss a possible covid-19 vaccine. the fda could approve pfizer's vaccine as early as next week. how the cdc will decide who gets priority. >> how much good are you going to do? how many lives are you going to save? second. what is fair. what is the fair way to do it.

the third is, how can we do this openly and transparentally so there's no backroom deals. it's clear what is happening. >> dr. frieden says it includes people in nursing homes, health care workers and essential workers. although a vaccine may be approved soon, the vaccine program may face some bumps in the road. >> when you vaccinate millions of people. some people get really sick after the vaccination and you don't know whether that was the vaccine or just coincidence. so, that has to be studied carefully or you're going to get all sorts of wild rumors flying around. that's another place where you really need transparency. >> and you can watch the full interview with dr. frieden coming up at 7:00 on "gma." this morning we are getting a better idea when we'll get the covid-19 vaccine in california and how much we'll be getting. julian glover with more on when the first shipment is expected to come in. julian. >> good morning, kumasi.

reassuring news here and expected to learn more about the state's distribution plan for the first phase of vaccinations in just the next few days outlining who will get the vaccination first and who will get it following that. governor gavin newsom said in a press conference on monday, the state will receive 327,000 doses of the pfizer vaccine in just the next few weeks. now, from what we know so far, health care workers and people at assisted living facilities would be among the first to get the shot. keep in mind, the pfizer vaccine does require two doses. the company says that second dose will be available within three week of the distribution of the first dose, meaning the first round of vax napccination california could be completed by early january. >> we're going to be seeing hundreds of thousands of people in california and millions of people in the united states get vaccinated in december. it's actually breathtaking. >> by the time we get to april the normal healthy, young man or woman 30 years old who has no underlying conditions can walk

in to a cvs or walgreens and get vaccinated. >> mu derna is also on track to produce 20 million doses for the entire country. also by the end of december, monday morning the company announced that like pfizer it has applied for federal emergency authorization of their vaccine. that ucsf doctor you just heard from he stresses while 327,000 doses of the pfizer vaccine may seem small when you compare it to california's population of 39 million people, this is very's bucket. lives will surely be saved. reporting live, julian glover, abc7 news. governor newsom says if current trends continue he may reinstate the stay-at-home order for counties in the purple tier. >> it will require and we are assessing this in realtime over the next day or two to make determinations of deep purple moves.

>> california set a record yesterday with nearly 7,800 patients hospitalized for covid-19. more than 1,800 in the icu and the governor says if current trends continue, the state will run out of icu beds before christmas eve. the bay area is in slightly better shape and projected to hit our icu bed capacity in early january. this tracker will show you the number of covid cases in the bay area since the beginning of march and the yellow bar is the rolling daily average. you can see the cases spiked during the summer months and then taper off and then comes that next surge which is at the beginning of november. that's resulted in the highest daily case counts during the pandemic. well, rising cases pushed san mateo into the purple tier which means curfew. the first night just ended about an hour ago at 5:00. it will be in place until december 31st.

is it considering taking action like santa clara county which instituted a mandatory quarantine for travelers. >> that is one consideration and we're looking at what santa clara did and what l.a. has done and looking at where this virus is headed. days to weeks where we're considering a type of mandatory quarantine. >> only essential workers are allowed to be out during the curfew. we're told police will take an educational approach when it comes to enforcement. well, most bay area counties you can see are in the purple tier right now. this is our exclusive interactive tracking tool. you can head to abc7news.com to check the status of your county any time. president trump coronavirus atlas resigned. he tweeted his resignation letter yesterday. he was nearing the end of his government detail as a special government employee. dr. atlas is a former professor of medicine at stanford and no background in infectious diseases and criticized for

several comments including questioning the need for masks. new at 6:00, the covid-19 pandemic changed campus life at a lot of colleges but created a new learning opportunity for students at uc davis. 65 uc davis students are enrolled in a course that includes the hands-on experience of running a testing center. not only do they receive a grade and course credit, their professor manager believes that his class opens doors for students at a time when many opportunities are off limits. >> it's a lot harder now to say, shadow a doctor in a hospital or whatever. there's a lot more restrictions. >> it shows that not only we care about our community, but also we care about the pursuit of knowledge and furthering our understanding of these kinds of viruses. >> the students also took part in town halls via zoom to learn more about covid-19 testing from the experts. customers enraged confrontation caught on camera. video from the local restaurant where this customer went on attack. what led up to this and how the

chair janet yellen as treasury secretary. yellen made history by becoming the first woman to lead the fed. so far yellen has had a positive reaction from both democrats and republicans. but neera tanden has been criticized by republican senators because of past comments about the gop. all right. let's take a look at what's going on temperature wise and how warmly you should dress this morning on the peninsula. we've got some mid 30s around redwood city, menlo park and not quite as foggy there. you can see where the fog is else where. temperatures in the 40s and visibility down to a couple hundred feet around sfo. watch out on 380, 280 and 101. and we've also got a little bit of fog starting to work its way over towards the east bay now. you can see from hayward southward into the south bay and up in the north bay, santa rosa 31. i'll get to sue in a second she told me black ice potentially in the north bay.

let me show you the temperatures. by 9:00 off our lows and 49 to about 52 degrees and by 11:00 already 55 to 59. we'll break through to the 60s by 1:00 and our spread from 57 in half moon bay to about 65 in fairfield. and with hazy sunshine at 3:00, we'll have a few more 50s. 56 at half moon bay and san francisco 58 and everybody else around 60 to 65. if you're heading out this evening, temperatures quickly falling into the low to mid 50s. 52 to 55 by so let's get over to sue and find out what is going on in the north bay. >> we do have frozen black ice as mike mentioned. it's on 116 grass valley in santa rosa. so, extra caution there. you're looking at a live shot. this is in brentwood right off vasco road. this was a fatal accident. they have the cars as you can see up on top of the tow trucks. they let traffic through. traffic is now getting by. they lifted the sig alert and soon those tow trucks will be

happening today a series of virtual events will mark world aids day. the national aids memorial will present leadership awards to dr. fauci and to another infectious disease expert. both doctors have spent nearly 40 years on the front lines fighting aids. today's ceremonies will include an online presentation of the aids memorial quilt. abc7 news is focused on building a better bay area and that includes covering the economy and how local businesses are really doing all they can to

survive this pandemic. the owner of panchita's panchits pupuseria jumped into action when someone attacked her daughter. it all started when the customer had to wait five minutes longer than expected to get her order. >> she grabbed a jug of five-pound sanitizer and launched it at me while i was holding my son. >> vargas' mother as you can see here grabbed whatever she could including that table to defend her family. the customer eventually left. police are now investigating this incident. >> terrible. the golden state warriors will start training camp for the 2020/2021 season. players can only take part in this camp if they've had three negative covid-19 tests in the last few days. the warriors will play their first preseason game december

happening today, attorneys for bill cosby will argue to overturn the actor and comedian's sexual assault conviction. the 83-year-old cosby is currently serving a three to ten-year sentence. jurors found cosby guilty in 2018, but his defense team is challenging the trial judge's decision to allow five other accusers to testify about long ago encounters with cosby.

entire commute. after 9:00, it will start to fade away. highway 116 is what sue said. 58 at half moon bay and everybody else from 62 in san francisco to 68 in santa rosa. temperatures anywhere from 2 to 9 degrees warmer than average today. all right. let's get some news and send it back to, let's send it to reggie. most of us in the bay area are now in the purple tier which means we have a nightly curfew. we can't go inside gyms or movie theaters and dining is outdoor only. yet, it could actually get more restrictive. the governor is hinting of another lockdown. and one of the key indicators he's looking at the shrinking number of icu beds. with more on that, we goe to ab7 news reporter amy hollyfield in walnut creek. amy? >> reggie, he is saying we all need to stay home so icu beds don't fill up. here's the numbers governor newsom is tracking.

75% of california's icu beds are now occupied with the state setting records two days in a row. more than 1,800 people are in intensive care. the governor's worried that icus could be overflowing in the next couple of weeks. so, he is considering a stay-at-home order. >> it will require and we are assessing this in realtime over the next day or two to make determinations of deep purple moves in those purple tiered status that is more equivalent, more in line with the stay-at-home order that folks were familiar with in the beginning of this year. >> now, the governor typically mentions that he is thinking about something like issuing a curfew before he does it. so, it does seem likely that he will be issuing this order now that he has mentioned it. he hasn't said when he will decide or what it would look

like but the last stay-at-home order back in march stated that we should only leave our homes for central business like the grocery store or if you're an essential worker or for exercise. live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield. >> perfect segue to marin county where everyone working out at this particular gym has to watch the clock because this is the only county in the red tier which means indoor workouts are still allowed but only have 10% capacity. this gym tells us demand is high. as the clock counts down, the workouts speed up every hour all the customers have to leave so new ones can come in. we spoke with the owner of a coffee shop who is not letting customers dine in, even though the guidelines allow it. >> i would never allow a customer to even sit here. if i'm going to purchase more, would you just close your eyes one side and open the other side. no can do. i'm doing this not just because for me and you, but for our

community as a whole. >> marin county reported nearly 60 new cases sunday. the county may still be in the red tier because it tests twice as many people as the state average. covid-19 has hurt small businesses across california and now governor newsom has announced a relief program and that includes grants that will keep them going until state lawmakers can build an even bigger package. >> these are grants up to $25,000. this program will be bridged just over the next number of weeks. to what we will work on with the legislature in the next legislative session. >> tap into the reserve fund to provide the grants for organizations and extend the deadline for companies that owe less than $1 million in sales tax. the cdc has issued a warning against travel to mexico. the country recently surpassed more than 1 million cases and you are looking at a test site in mexico city. a popular tourist destination for americans who want to enjoy

vacation without restrictions. you see, unlike hawaii and the caribbean, mexico does not require tourists to present a negative covid-19 test. a san diego couple knows what it is like to travel first hand. jose and gloria ended up hospitalized with covid-19 after a trip. they went last month and their daughter said they were wary about the virus and wanted to use airfare credits that were about to expire. >> their trip postponed two or three times when all of this started and they didn't want to lose the money so they decided to go this time. >> the couple wore goggles, masks, face shields while sight seeing and eating at restaurants and still they got sick. about a week into their vacation. jose was flown back to the u.s. to be treated at a va hospital. he is on a ventilator. gloria was hospitalized in mexico for several days and she is now quarantining at an air bnb. california's vaccine vision.

munt e mountain view to 45 in san jose. head up the east bay shore and some fog is starting to sneak up to castro valley where it is 37 and most temperatures here in the mid 40s. let's take a look else where and you can see the thick fog on the peninsula and all the way up to the north bay santa rosa. 31 degrees and fog in the air. that's why you have black ice. 33 in pleasanton from one of the cooler spots and the east bay and look at blush this morning. got a new name on twitter. it's 45 degrees as you look down from sutro tower. widespread fog the only real issue for the commute and that is just for the morning. let's look at this stubborn area of low pressure and pushing the jet stream so far into canada and up near alaska. getting rain in places they should be getting snow. we saw a storm come close to us wednesday and falls apart and just brings us extra clouds thursday and cools us a little bit. another storm system looking close saturday and you cann ese

even it falls apart. let's get more on that traffic and turn it over to sue. >> good morning, everyone. take a look at our screen here. guess what we're looking at. tough to tell, right? because thick fog. that is the san mateo bridge. and mike has been warning about this and very low visibility on the span. there is a fog advisory there. so, extra caution this morning. we pop over to the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights, of course, are on. an earlier stall that turned into an accident just past the metering lights. that's been cleared and now back on to 880 in the westbound direction. so, that's a bit of a delay heading into san francisco. here's a look at some of your drive time physical yos if you' out nop westbound highway 4 is looking pretty good. little bit of slowing as you approach concord for a 20-minute drive out of antioch and towards the golden gate bridge fog southbound on 101 and s

today the cdc will vote on who will be getting the first doses once a vaccine is approved here in the u.s. in a conversation with facebook yesterday, dr. anthony fauci says we may be living in a very different world by spring. >> by the time we get to april, the normal healthy young man or woman 30 years old who has no underlining conditions can walk into a cvs or a walgreens and get vaccinated. >> moderna may also be on its way to vaccine approval. yesterday the company applied for fda authorization. we're getting a better idea of when we will get the covid-19 vaccine here in california and how much we'll be getting. abc7 news reporter julian glover with more details on this. good morning, julian. >> hi, good morning, kumasi. governor gavin newsom said in a news conference yesterday that the state of california will be receiving 327,000 doses of the pfizer vaccine in just the next few weeks at a ucsf doctor we spoke with called those

developments breathtaking. we expect to learn more details about the state's distribution plan for the first phase of vaccines in the next few days outlining who will get vaccinated first. keep in mind the pfizer vaccine delivers two doses and the second dose will be available within three weeks of the distribution of the first dose. meaning the first round of vaccinations in california could be completed by early january. >> the vaccine's implementation will happen at the speed of trust and that is part of the reason why we have built a set of committees. >> we have to start with health care workers and probably people in nursing homes. and then ultimately we will get to people over 65, people with pre-existing conditions. >> moderna is also on track, as kumasi mentioned, to produce 20 million doses for the entire country and also by the end december it applied for federal

let's look at what is going on. some people are calling me out for calling this first day of winter and it is based on our coldest three months, november, december and january. our proximity to the sun and that happens on december 21st, which is the shortest amount of daylight during the year. now, "game of thrones" they're still waiting. winter's coming. here's a look at what is going on in san jose. plenty of fog out there. unfortunately around for the morning commute. 45 here and watch out for black ice in the north bay. elevated surface s some of that fog is freezing and becoming black ice. hazy sunshine and mild this afternoon. our earliest sunshine starts today in the afternoon. extended forecast absence of rain and here's the reason why that is so alarming. look at san jose. look at oakland. only 5% of our average rain so far for the rain year and that is october and november.

starts october 1st. that is coming off an even slow start last year. but not as slow as this start and you know how bad last winter ended and this is not looking good. so, we'll keep an eye on it. but the next two weeks looking pretty dry. i had to turn the sprinkler system on yesterday. some of my plants were starting to look a little withered. 58 in half moon bay today. we have 62 to 65 around the bay. about 63 to 68 inland. tonight most of the fog will be near the coast. the usual north bay valleys and fog out in the central valley and not nearly as wide spread. drier air and a little bit of an off-shore breeze means cooler conditions tonight. mid 30s around san francisco. my accuweather seven-day forecast. marine layer and extra clouds and that's why thursday is our coolest day and still remain dry. we rebound quickly back into the 60s friday and pretty much stay there all the way through monday. two to nine degrees warmer than average just about every day in the extended forecast.
