they might be the most important packages fedex and ups have ever delivered. trucks pulled out of pfizer's factory in michigan today carrying a long-awaited coronavirus vaccine. some are calling it vaccine d-day. the first doses of pfizer's vaccine are being distributed right now, providing a light at the end of what has been a dark tunnel. >> reporter: distribution of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine has begun. the first shipments leaving pfizer's manufacturing facility in kalamazoo, michigan. >> today has been the most extraordinary experience of my career, this vaccine today gives us the promise and the light at the end of that tunnel.

>> reporter: fedex and ups handling deliveries to 636 locations. those deliveries expected to arrive monday at 145 sites. 425 on tuesday and another 66 sites on wednesday. these sites all hospitals and other major hubs with ultra cold freezer capabilities. >> monday would be a better day for the launch because it's a regular business day so you could ensure all the administration sites were fully staffed and open. >> reporter: the vaccines will be paired with kits containing syringes, alcohol swabs, a solution to dilute the vaccine, safety gear and reminder card. those deliveries cannot come soon enough for overburdened health care systems. nationwide more than 108,000 americans now being treated for the virus in the hospital, a 10% increase since december 1st. health care workers will be among the first vaccinated. >> we're going to have a priority too to the individuals

that have been caring for covid-19 on the front lines. >> reporter: in houston, preparing for their ultra cold freezers and practicing administering the vaccine. recent polls have found between 25-40% of americans are not willing to be vaccinated. >> we need to address their fears and concerns. we need to roll this out in a way that provides confidence to people but we also need to be transparent. >> reporter: health officials say it could take several months to get everyone vaccinated and urge americans to continue wearing masks and practice social distancing. here in the bay area, it is all hands on deck at local hospitals as the countdown to take delivery of the first vaccine doses gets closer. cornell, this could not come soon enough. >> here we go. it is game on for hospitals here in the bay area. the first shipments of the covid-19 vaccine could arrive within the next 24-48 hours.

health care officials have been planning for this moment for weeks, even months. many are ready for the rollout. >> we're prepared as of today to receive just in case it comes early. >> reporter: stanford health care is ready at the loading dock to take delivery of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine as early as wednesday. >> it will help us vaccinate a large portion of our front line workforce that's providing care and service every day. >> reporter: a team of 60 has been planning for the vaccine's arrival, getting ultra cold storage units ready, even running practice drills. the first doses will arrive in the bay area via fedex and ups, possibly at their freight hubs at the oakland international airport, then be shipped out to hospitals on refrigerated big rig trucks. the hospitals would not disclose

any transport fedetails for security reasons. ucsf is on standby to get their first doses. how soon? very soon. >> we hope to receive vaccine at ucsf monday, tuesday at the latest. we'll start vaccinating on wednesday. >> reporter: marin county's vaccine shipment scheduled to arrive at the emergency operations center monday, has been pushed back until wednesday. >> we've been working with the hospitals making sure we're ready for this. we want to be ready to go as soon as the vaccine arrives. those plans will be put in place this week. >> reporter: it could be months before the general public gets vaccinated. governor newsom issued this statement, we are calling on all californians to continue doing their part by following local and state guy danidance, wearin mask and staying home. >> front line health care

it is a good indicator of the transmission rate of the virus. a welcome sight today in the bay area. take a look, much-needed rain. wet was definitely the word, no matter where you happen to look on our network of cameras. more rain could be on the way as well in the coming days. let's get right to drew tuma. >> what a beautiful rainy sunday we had. we saw anywhere from about a half an inch to an inch of rain today. and we're likely going to see even more showers over the next couple of hours. live doppler 7 right now, i want to zoom in to a few locations. where we'll find some of that wet weather is in the peninsula along the east bay approaching the south bay. san mateo with some light showers. into the north bay, the showers are winding down. the rain is going to end from a north to south fashion. on the storm impact scale this evening, we'll find showers tapering. all the wet weather is out of

in the south bay former san jose police chief eddie garcia may be retired, but he's not done with law enforcement. garcia is now a finalist for the top job in dallas along with six other candidates. yesterday was garcia's last day after almost 29 years with the san jose police department, four years as chief. he tweeted, it's a wrap and thanked the city. he had a message for the men and women in the department, saying it was an honor fighting for you, stay the course. san francisco has seen a spike in car thefts this year. they're up 33%. he says in many cases the steal is just the beginning of the story. san francisco police say the thieves will commit robberies and even shootings. with more people staying at home, crooks have a wider variety of cars to choose from to blend in when they commit another crime. the new name for sir francis drake high school could be decided in a march madness style tournament. the 16th century explorer's name has already been removed from the school because of its ties to slavery. the marin independent journal reports that students and the community are planning to vote on the top eight names in a sudden death tournament. the school board would be making the final decision. it's the picture that had the bay area social media scene

denise thought she had captured an intimate moment in a stunning photo at sutro baths yesterday. it shows a man on bended knee in a traditional pose for a proposal. i spoke to denise last night and she was hoping to find the lucky couple to share the photo with them after the image was shared thousands of time online. she later learned that another photographer had staged the scene with a couple of friends. i was a little disappointed to learn this, still, this is just the perfect picture. >> totally. it is such a beautiful picture with that sunset along the coast. today, though, not the greatest day to be out and about. i think a lot of people liked hunkering down on this very rainy sunday. still tracking some showers out

there right now. i do want to press into street level especially around fremont right now. we're about to get a pretty good downpour working through the south bay. even light showers along the peninsula. much of the wet weather will be winding down over the next couple of hours. in fact, future weather, by about 9:00 later on this evening, the rain has really moved out of here. the clouds will start breaking down and that will set the stage for a pretty bright forecast tomorrow. look at rainfall totals since friday, though. a lot of cities coming close, if not exceeding an inch of rainfall over the past 48 hours. in fact, today in san francisco alone we saw nearly three quarters of an inch of rain, which is the single wettest day we have seen since last january. it has been a pretty long time since we've had an entirely rainy day like today. half an inch in san jose, close to an inch in oakland. this is all great news because

we are behind in our rainfall totals. we're also tracking snow in the sierra. a winter storm warning does continue. about 4-7 inches of additional snowfall about 4500 feet. a coastal flood advisory still i effect back here at home, this lasting until 1:00 p.m. tuesday because we're under under our king tide. high surf advisory in effect as well. our active ocean could have breakers up to 20 feet. tonight what we're tracking, fog will be developing once this rain moves out, especially in the north bay. i would expect first thing tomorrow morning areas of locally dense fog. otherwise, mid 30s to mid 40s for overnight lows.

nasa is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the hubble space telescope. they're sharing 30 images captured by hubble. you're looking at some of the close-ups hubble has shot of galaxies and star clusters back to earth. nasa believes hubble will be transmitting images for another 10-20 years as it travels farther away from earth. it is so stunning.
