have ever delivered. trucks pulled out of pfizer's factory in michigan carrying a long awaited coronavirus vaccine. thank you for joining us. we begin our coverage with abc news reporter. >> distribution of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine has begun. the first shipments leaving pfizer's manufacturing facility in kalamazoo, michigan. >> today has been the most extraordinary experience of my career. this vaccine today gives us the promise and the light at the end of. tunnel. >> reporter: zpex ups handling the deliveries to 636 locations. those deliveries expected to arrive monday at 145 sites. 425 on tuesday and another 66 sites on wednesday. these sites all hospitals and other major hubs with ultra cold capabilities. >> monday would be a better first day for the launch because it is a regular business day so you can ensure all the

administration sites are staffed and opened. >> reporter: they will contain syringes, alcohol swabs, a solution the dilute the vaccine and vaccine reminder cards. these deliveries cannot come soon enough for overburdened health care systems. nationwide more than 108,000 americans now being treated for pthe virus in the hospital. a 10% increase since december 1st. health care workers will be among the first people vaccinated. >> so we'll have a priority two to the individuals that have been caring for covid on the front line. >> reporter: in houston, they've been preparing and practicing administering the vaccine. recent polls have found between 25 and 40% of americans are not willing to be vaccinated. >> we need to address their fears and concerns. we need to roll this out in a way that provides confidence to people. but we also need to be trans parent. >> reporter: health officials say it could take several noes

get everyone vaccinated and urge americans to continue wearing masks and practice social distancing. abc news, los angeles. >> here in the bay area, it is all hands on deck in the local hospitals as the countdown to get the first doses proexs. cornell, a plan is in place. >> yes, here we go. it is game on for hospitals in the bay area. the first shipments of the covid-19 vaccine could arrive here in the next 24 to 48 hours. health care officials have been planning for this moment for weeks. many are ready for the rollout. >> we're actually prepared as of today to receive just in case it comes early. >> reporter: she said stanford health care is early at the loading dock to take delivery of the covid vaccine as early as wednesday. we expect to get tlin00 doses which is great. it will help us vaccinate a large portion of our front line work force as providing care and

service every day. >> reporter: she said the team of 60 has been planning for the vaccine's arrival. getting ultra cold storage units ready, even running timed practice vaccine drills. >> so you literally get people in room simulating all of that and pretend go you're giving the vaccine at that time. >> reporter: the first will arrive via fedex and ups. possibly at the freight hubs. then shipped out to hospitals on refrigerated big rig trucks. the shipping companies would not disclose any transport details for security reasons. >> i'll be getting a vaccine as soon as they'll give me one. >> reporter: he said ucsf is on stand by to get its first doses. >> it's imminent. >> reporter: how soon? very soon says the pharmacy executive. >> we hope to receive vaccine at ucsf monday, tuesday at the latest, and we'll start vaccinate go on wednesday. >> reporter: marin county's vaccine shipment scheduled to arrive at the emergency operations center monday has

a special edition of 2020, the shot, race for the vaccine. it will cover the safety, access and timing of the vaccine. california continues to set records with the number of people hospitalized due to covid-19. the state topped 13,000 today. more than 2,800 are in the icu. both are single day highs. the bay area's icu capacity dipped to 16.7%. and the state's threshold is 15%. there were more than 30,000 newly diagnosed cases of coronavirus. a welcome sight in the bay area. some much needed rain. wet was the word no matter where you looked on our network of cameras. more rain could be on the way. let's get a check now with drew tuma. >> yes, what a rainy sunday we had. a half inch to close to an inch of rain out there.

live doppler 7, we do have clearing skies in the north bay but still some wet weather in the south bay. we'll zoom into street level. you can see, 80 from sunnyvale, santa clara approaching san jose. the storm impact scale will keep it around the next couple hours but showers are ending from north to south. so additional rainfall will be very minimal. but once our skies clear out, a dense fog developing. we're starting with fog. storm a dry day but already tracking another storm on the way. we'll have the details when we'll get our next bout of rain in the forecast. >> all right. thanks. king tides, the highest tides of the year, splashed on the sidewalk along the embarcadero. a naturalist with the el horn preserve explains what happens when sea level is driven by forces high in the sky. >> from roughly november to

especially contentious because president trump has repeatedly tried to sway states whether he lost to get their electors to vote for him. in 32 states and the district of columbia, laws require electors to vote for the popular vote winner. abc7 spoke with 93-year-old pete mccloskey who is now a biden elector. he told us that georgia and pennsylvania could pose a threat to biden's win. >> they're not required by law, pennsylvania or georgia, to vote in any way. so we're hoping that the electors in pennsylvania and georgia, 36 votes, will vote for biden. >> tomorrow's vote takes place at 2:00 p.m. local time. california's vote could secure president-elect joe biden's presidency. eddie garcia's days of

in the south bay, the former san jose police chief eddie garcia may be retired but he's not done with law enforcement. he is now a finalist for the top job in dallas along with six other candidates. yesterday was garcia's last day after almost 29 years with the san jose police department. four years as chief. he tweeted, it is a wrap and thanked the city. he had a men for the men and women in the department saying it was an honor. say the course. san francisco contributor phil matier said the san francisco has seen a spark in car thefts. they're up 33% and he said in many cases, the steal is just the beginning of the story. san francisco police tell phil the thieves will commit robberies and even shootings with more people at home, a variety of cars to steal from to blend in when they commit another crime. you can read the comments in the

chronicle every wednesday and sunday. a new name for sir francis drake high school could happen in a tournament. the name has been removed as you can see because of the ties to slavery. the marin independent journal reports that students and community are planning to vote on the top eight names in a sudden death tournament. the school board then could make the final decision. it is the picture had bay area social media buzzing over the weekend. it looks like a proposal at san francisco sutro baths but we've learned it's not quite what it looks like. and get ready for rain. coming up in sports, sap jose state is sporting the best record of any football game in the bay. we have more good news ahead with the playoff hopes by

hot buttered rum and hot coffee and hot chocolate available. not all things are what they seem. san francisco photographer denise thought she had captured an intimate moment in a stunning photo at sutro baths yesterday. it shows a man on bended knee in the traditional pose of a proposal. the fact that it appeared before a breath taking back drop with a heart shape opening in the rock on the right made it all that more captivating. i spoke to denise last night. she was hoping to find the lucky couple and share it with them. she later learned that another photographer had staged the scene with a couple of friends. no matter what happened, it is a gorgeous picture. and good thing she got that in yesterday as opposed to today. >> right. today was a total washout.

the showers are coming to an end over the next couple hours. live doppler 7 showing you a couple things. first the clouds are breaking down. we are turning to clear skies in some parts. there are some light showers. the showers are only a few hours away from exiting the entire region. you see by about 9:00, later this evening, the rain is out of here. the clouds are breaking down and we will find mainly clear skies overnight with some fog developing. but rainfall since friday has been wonderful. many cities exceeding an inch of rainfall including danville, san francisco, half moon bay, santa rosa, ukiah, clear lake, and we are tracking more rain on the way this week so we'll just add on to our rainfall numbers. tracking snow in the sierra. the winter storm warning in effect until 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. an additional four to seven inches is expected.

we could see 14 inches of additional snow. back here at home, not only the wet weather but a coastal flood advisory continue tlus 1:00 p.m. tuesday. king tides are during over the next few days and they are the highest high tides we've seen. so likely during times of high tide, we will see localized flooding. not possible but a high surf advisory at the coastline until 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. wave heights, 10 to 15 feet high. we could see breakers exceeding 20 feet. the ocean is pretty angry right now. the numbers are pretty december-like. a lot of 50s on the board and this is where we should be this time of year. overnight we have the showers early on. as the skies clear out, we'll have dense zpog that will be in the north bay.

we'll fractitrack that over the few hours. tomorrow morning starts out with areas of fog. tomorrow afternoon, it's a different day compared to today. we're talking about a lot of sunshine. dry conditions in the mid to upper 50s. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. we'll have the morning clouds to sun. we're clouding back up on tuesday and that's in advance of the next storm system. the rain will arrive first in the north bay, wednesday evening. and the showers will sink south overnight to thursday then another chance of rain next weekend. with a 5-7 record there is no room for error. san francisco needs to win out and get some help to have any shot at the playoffs. tomorrow with a game against washington, technically, a 49ers home game.
