it's game on as local hospitals get ready for the first doses of the covid-19 vaccine to arrive. after a rainy day today, we're tracking our next storm arriving. we'll have the details in the accuweather forecast. we are less than two weeks from christmas, and this year there's a christmas tree shortage. we'll tell you why. abc7 news starts right now. >> announcer: building a better bay area for a safe and secure future, this is abc7 news. pfizer vaccines have arrived in california. take a look. the los angeles airport tweeted this photo just in the past hour of the fedex plane that landed there. it comes as the city has seen a terrible surge in covid cases. with that, we say good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. the government is remaining tight-lipped about vaccine transport plans due to security. vaccines are also expected in

the bay area within the next couple days. we reached out to the local airports about any arrivals tonight, but got no updates. the anticipation is building in cities across the country, all badly in need of relief and hope. the nationwide distribution of the first covid-19 vaccine is under way. inside pfizer's michigan facility, workers carefully packed coolers loaded with dry ice into refrigerated carts. 2.9 million doses will be sent to 636 locations across all 50 states and u.s. territories. >> the american public can be really assured of high-quality and effective vaccine. >> reporter: the faa giving priority to the ups and fedex flights carrying this precious cargo. ups vice president captain houston mills piloting the first flight. >> knowing that this is this moment of hope and change that everybody has been longing for. >> deliveries to final destinations will begin on monday. >> it's a regular business day, so you can ensure that all the administration sites were fully

staffed and all of them were open. >> once out of its shipping container, within 90 seconds, the vaccine needs to be moved into those special freezers or put in a standard refrigerator to thaw, where it can stay for up to five days. out of the refrigerator, a vial is quickly diluted into five doses that must be injected within two hours, or it spoils. the deliveries can't come soon enough. more than 108,000 americans are currently hospitalized with covid-19. last week, the deadliest so far. nearly 100 americans lost to the virus every hour. but recent surveys show more than a third of americans do not want the vaccine. >> we need to vaccinate a significant number of people in this country, including those who are hesitant. >> here in the bay area, it is all hands on deck at local hospitals as the countdown to take delivery of the first vaccine doses gets closer. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard has been tracking it all. >> we're actually prepared as of today to receive just in case it

comes early. >> reporter: nurse lisa shilling says stanford health care is ready at the loading dock to take delivery of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine as early as wednesday. >> we expect to get 3,900 doses, which is great because it will help us vaccinate a large portion of our frontline workforce that's providing care and service every day. >> reporter: shilling says a team of 60 has been planning for the vaccine's arrival, getting ultra cold storage units ready, even running timed practice vaccine drills. >> you literally get people in a room simulating all of that and pretending you're even giving the vaccine at that time. >> reporter: the first doses will arrive in the bay area via fedex and ups, possibly at their freight hubs at the oakland international airport, then shipped out to hospitals on big rig trucks. the shipping companies wouldn't disclose any transport detail for security reasons. dr. george rutherford says ucsf is on standby to get its first doses. >> it's imminent. >> reporter: how soon? very soon says ucsf pharmacy

executive desi >> we'll start vaccinating on wednesday. >> reporter: marin county's vaccine shipment scheduled to arrive at the emergency operations center monday has been pushed back until wednesday. >> we've been working with the hospitals, planning, you know, making sure we're ready for this. we wanted to be ready to go as soon as the vaccine arrived, and those plans will be put in place this week. >> reporter: it could be months before the general public gets vaccinated. in the meantime, governor gavin newsom issued this statement. we are calling on all californians to continue doing their part by following local and state guidance, wearing a mask, and staying home. the frontline health care workers will get priority. some are being notified about scheduling an appointment to get the vaccine as soon as it arrives. both ucsf and stanford health say they believe in the vaccine but won't require their employees to get it. in the newsroom, cornell

lafayette, rescuing him from a san francisco beach. abc7 was at ft. point never the presidio where it all happened this afternoon. witnesses say the surfer was riding a six to eight-foot wave when he gained too much speed and crashed head first into a rock. a surfer at the scene, who is also an emt, rushed to perform cpr on him after another group pulled him from the water. >> it looked like he had a gash on his head as well, so he probably hit the rock and became unconscious. someone obviously was calling 911 and we were just pumping on him, just trying to get his compressions in and the airway. >> glad for that quick thinking. the san francisco fire department says that the quick action of the surfers may have changed the outcome of the rescue. >> the cpr being administered right away is really a positive thing under incredibly adverse conditions, substantial swell out there, whitewater, rocks.

our next storm arrives on wednesday and rolling into part of your thursday as well. we'll time out this next storm for you in the full accuweather forecast in just a few minutes. new at 11:00, san francisco's historic cliff house restaurant sieerving customers shutting down. the announcement was posted today on the restaurant's website. while the pandemic hasn't helped, the owner says the closure comes as a result of delays by the national park service to reach an operating contract. cliff house has been running on short term contracts since the last long-term contract expired in 2018. we reached out to the national park service for comment and haven't heard back. it will close permanently december 31st. still ahead on abc7 news at 11:00, san francisco's health order now says you can hang out with one person from outside your household. the cheeky reply from one supervisor about what this means for dating. and new tonight, the cleveland indians are reportedly changing their name.

san francisco has updates to their stay-at-home order. now you're allowed to see one other person from another household outdoors only. this means you can take a walk, hang out in a park, and even play low-contact sports all as long as you don't share equipment. san francisco supervisor matt haney pointed out something else you can do -- date. he tweeted kind of jokingly that this means dating is again allowed in san francisco, but you can only date outdoors and no double dates.

"san francisco chronicle" insider and abc7 news contributor phil matier reports san francisco has seen a spike in car thefts this year. they're up 33%, and he says in many cases, the steal is just the beginning of the story. san francisco police tell phil the thieves will commit robberies and even shootings with more people staying at home, crooks have a wider variety of cars to choose from. you can read phil matier's columns in the "san francisco chronicle" every wednesday and sunday. the new name for sir francis drake high school could be decided in a march madness-style tournament. the 16th century explorer's name has already been removed, as you can see, from san anselmo high school because of his ties to slavery. the marin independent journal reports that students and the community are planning to vote on the top eight names in a sudden-death tournament. the school board would then make the final decision. all right. new developments now.

earlier tonight it was revealed that the cleveland indians baseball team will indeed drop that nickname after more than a century. abc7 news sports anchor chris alvarez joining us with details. chris, this has been in discussion for a little while now. >> yeah, dion. there have been pushes for cleveland to change their name for quite some time. but after the washington football team dropped their nickname earlier this year, it felt like it was a matter of when, not if for cleveland. tonight espn confirms a "new york times" report that the team will officially drop the indians nickname sometime this week. cleveland has used this nickname since 1915 but in recent years the team has slowly begun de-emphasizing the name. the chief wahoo mascot has not been used on the uniform for a number of years and this season the team mostly used word cleveland across t new nickname ideas are already a hot topic. an old cleveland team called

that will set the stage for a sunny day on the way tomorrow. look at the rainfall totals since friday. a lot of cities either met or exceeded an inch of rainfall, including san francisco, fairfield, santa rosa, ukiah, half moon day, danville coming in close to 1.2 inches of rain. so finally that storm door is open, and we'll track several chances in the week ahead for more wet weather. we still have that winter storm warning in effect in the sierra. we're talking about a couple of inches of additional snowfall as that winter storm warning cotinues till 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. and our highest peaks, we could see up to 14 inches of additional snowfall, so of course tonight travel not recommended. wait until tomorrow after the storm has exited. a coastal flood advisory effect through 1:00 p.m. tuesday because of the king tides. during times of high tide, we could see some localized flooding along the coast and around the bay shoreline.

a high surf advisory is also in effect until 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. you can see wave heights are pretty high right now, anywhere from 12 to 15 feet high. and with this long period swell out of the northwest, we could see breakers as high as 20 feet underneath that high surf advisory. numbers right now under clear skies, they're cooling off pretty rapidly. in fact, san francisco down to 49 degrees already. 43 in santa rosa. 47 in san ramon. so tonight it's going to feel a lot colder than last night felt. in fact, numbers continues to fall overnight tonight. our coldest spots in the north bay will drop into the 30s. and there will likely be some patchy fog in the north bay developing after midnight tonight, so just be aware of that first thing in the morning. low to mid-40s along the bay shoreline. tomorrow it's a dramatically different day than today. we're expecting a lot of sunshine, dry conditions and temperatures very seasonable for this time of year in the mid and upper 50s. things, though, change once again on wednesday. our next storm will move into

not all things are what they seem. san francisco photographer denise cotan thought she had captured an intimate moment in a stunning photo at sutro baths yesterday. it shows a man on bended knee in the traditional pose for a proposal. now, the fact that it appeared before a breathtaking backdrop at sunset with even a heart-shaped opening in a nearby rock made it all the more captivating. i spoke to denise last night, and she was hoping to find the lucky couple to share the photo with them. after the image was shared thousands of time online, she later learned that another photographer had staged the scene with a couple of friends. once again, chris alvarez joining us with a preview of sports. >> coming up in sports, it's the women's basketball versio of big game. stanford caking taking on cal. the 49ers

>> announcer: building a better bay area for a safe and secure future, this is abc7 news. shipments of the pfizer vaccine are now en route to cities across the country. fedex and ups have been tasked with the deliveries. ups workers in michigan were loading up boxes today. now, the race for a vaccine affects all of us, and those being vaccinated will help us all build a better bay area. this week we're looking for answers about the vaccinations. when will you be able to get your shot? abc7 morning's kumasi aaron has more on the likely timeline. >> reporter: since the

coronavirus started spreading across the globe in late 2019, scientists have been looking for a vaccine. now that vaccines are proven, when will you be able to get the vaccine? it will ultimately be up to each state to determine who will get the vaccine and when. but federal guidance from the centers for disease control gives us an idea of the timeline. who goes first? well, the first doses of a vaccine were made available in december 2020. those first shots are earmarked for those who are at highest risk of infection -- health care workers and nursing home residents. because the vaccines require two separate shots 21 days apart, the second batch of vaccines delivered in january 2021 will likely go to those same people. by february, the next round of vaccinations are expected. the cdc recommends these shots be given to the next highest risk people. that includes people over the age of 65, people with medical conditions that put them at risk of death if infected, essential workers like those employed in

education, food, transportation, and law enforcement. again, because it will take two doses, it will likely take two months to vaccinate that round of people. one thing to keep in mind, if you've been infected with the coronavirus, you'll likely need to wait until the next round of vaccinations. that's because people who already had the virus likely already have some immunity. by april, the next round of vaccinations will be distributed to everyone else. over the next three months, healthy, nonessential workers younger than 65 will begin receiving the vaccine by the spring. at that rate, most americans could be vaccinated by early summer. but that doesn't mean life will immediately go back to normal or that the virus will go away. but we will be one step closer. until then, keep your distance, keep washing your hands, and keep safe. kumasi aaron, abc7 news.

>> once again, our vaccine coverage continues all week long. tomorrow an abc7 news mornings, we'll have the latest on where those vaccine shipments are. tune in at 5:00 a.m. and then tomorrow afternoon at 4:00, we dig into the progress other companies have made on covid vaccines. the vaccine comes as several california counties are seeing some troubling statistics. in san francisco yesterday, health officials reported 323 new cases. that is the highest number of new cases there so far. in los angeles, numbers today indicate more than 4,000 people are hospitalized with covid-19. in the san joaquin valley, there are zero icu beds available as of yesterday. today's numbers show icu capacity is at 1.5%. state health officials are continuing to encourage people to sign up for california notify. it's a smartphone feature that notifies you if you may have been exposed to someone with covid-19. the governor said today more than 5 million people have already signed up.

we have information on how to do it at our website, abc7news.com. well, we are on the eve of a tradition that has gone on for more than 200 years. the electoral college will come together tomorrow and electors will cast their ballot for president. now, it normally happens without much attention, but president trump has still refused to concede. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone talked to a local elector about how it could all play out. >> reporter: 538 members of the electoral college will be casting ballots within the next 24 hours. one of those electors, former california congressman who represented san mateo county, pete mccloskey. >> to be an elector is a great honor. >> reporter: but while there has been talk over what could happen, hastings law professor and former law clerk at the supreme court rory little says electors rarely ever go faithless, which would mean voting against the candidate that they have pledged to support. >> there are still these sort of
