the first american outside a trial setting will get the covid-19 vaccine. in kalamazoo, michigan, sunday pfizer employees celebrated as the first doses were packed up. enough for 250,000 americans. workers gathered outside the facility, some before 5:00 a.m. to witness history. %-p doses today. but several hospitals tell abc news they're still uncertain about the timing of the vaccine's delivery due to security reasons. u.s. marshals are traveling with each shipment, and the faa is giving priority to the u.p.s. and fedex flights carrying the precious cargo. >> it's a regular business day so you can ensure that all the administration sites were fully staffed and all of them were open. >> health care workers, seniors and first responders will be the first to get the shot. member of "operation warp speed" expected 100 million americans will be vaccinated by the end of march, and a few months after that they expect enough people to be inoculated to halt transmission of the virus.

>> we need to have immunized about 75% or 80% of the u.s. population before herd immunity can really be established. we hope to reach that point between the month of may and the month of june. it is, however, critical that most of the american people decide and accept to take the vaccine. we are very concerned by the hesitancy that we see, the level of hesitancy that we see, but we hope that now that all the data is out and available to be discussed in detail, that people will keep their mind open to listen to the data and hopefully agree that this is a very effective and safe vaccine and therefore take it. >> reporter: the vaccine cannot come soon enough. more than 108,000 americans are currently in the hospital with covid, a record high. >> i'm tired, exhausted, emotionally drained. you know, this stuff really takes a lot out of me, but it's

just the right thing to do, and i'll be back soon. >> reporter: six states are reporting more than 10,000 cases per day including new york where people in new york city flocked to restaurants for a final meal sunday before today's ban on indoor dining takes effect. >> all the restrictions and rules and everything has really been horrible. i just have to wait, you know follow the rules like everybody else. and, you know, hopefully this is over soon. >> reporter: in california more than 500,000 cases reported in l.a. county. cases doubling since thanksgiving. health officials saying should this be followed by another surge related to the winter holiday, the number of patients in the icu could become catastrophic. europe facing its own surge. germany now imposing a strict lockdown through the holidays with stores, schools and day cares closing. as for what's next a hearing is scheduled thursday for moderna's vaccine which does not need the ultra cold storage that pfizer's vaccine requires. >> it looks as if white house officials will not be among the

first in the country to get the covid vaccine after all. sources initially said aides working closely with president trump and other senior government officials could be vaccinated this week. the plan drew complaints that white house workers were unfairly cutting the line. overnight the president tweeted people working in the white house should receive the vaccine somewhat later in the program unless specifically necessary. i have asked that this adjustment be made. he added, i am not scheduled to take the vaccine but look forward to doing so at the appropriate time. u.s. officials believe russia is behind a massive cyberattack targeting the u.s. treasury and commerce departments. sources say it may be one of the biggest and most sophisticated hacks in years, and it may have been launched in the spring. the fbi and homeland security trying to determine if other agencies were affected. "the new york times" reports email systems were breached. >> it is possible they are looking for information regarding our knowledge of covid-19 vaccines. that's been something that's

been thrown out. it's anybody's guess right now but one thing is that it's a widespread attack. it's most likely larger than what we currently understand. >> the company that provides the software for the government agency calls the attack highly sophisticated and says it is working with law enforcement. now to the other big story this morning. the electoral college is voting today to finalize results of the presidential election, and overnight we learned that state lawmakers in michigan have closed their offices today because of credible threats of violence. abc's elizabeth schulze is in washington with the latest on today's vote. elizabeth, good morning. >> good morning, kenneth. well, electors across the country will vote today confirming which candidate for president won in their states but the vote in michigan is being overshadowed by threats. this morning, new security concerns as the electoral college takes a major step in making president-elect joe biden's victory official. the 538 members of the electoral

college will cast their vote in state legislators today reflecting the popular votes in their states but in michigan the statehouse will be closed during that vote due to what officials describe as credible threats of violence. the capitol in lancing has been the scene of protests by trump supporters for months, but the most recent, quote, refuse to obey rally over the weekend. [ crowd chanting ] >> reporter: in washington, d.c. saturday thousands rallied in support of the president's efforts to overturn the elections. the demonstrations turning violent. at least four people were stabbed, more than 30 arrested. in the meantime, biden is expected to reach 270 electoral votes during california's meeting today. his transition team saying he'll give a speech tonight on the strength and resilience of our democracy. president trump and his allies have lost nearly 50 cases since election day and the supreme

court refused to hear a texas case that challenged votes in four battleground states. >> the reason the supreme court is not taking this is not because of a lack of courage, it's for the same reason that every court has thrown it out. it is a lack of evidence. >> reporter: now after the vote today the next big date is january 6th. that's when congress officially counts the electoral votes and when some of president trump's allies could try to raise objections, kenneth. >> elizabeth schulze there in washington, thank you. overseas a search is under way for hundreds of boys apparently kidnapped from their school in nigeria. the teens went missing after their school was attacked by bandits. hundreds more escaped when police exchanged fire with the gunmen. a similar attack happened in 2014 that resulted in the kidnapping of hundreds of girls. some are still missing. tributes are pouring in for writer john le carre ray who died from pneumonia. he drew on his experience working in british intelligence. his books include "the spy who came in from the cold" and "tinker tailor soldier spy." stephen king called him a

this 48-year-old hotel overlooking washington, d.c. is now history. crews imploded the holiday inn in rosalynn, virginia. a new residential complex will be built on that spot. new york city police are investigating the life of a man who opened fire outside of a cathedral after a christmas concert before he was fatally shot. [ gunfire ] >> what's happening? >> i don't know. there's a shooter. >> the gunfire erupted outside of the cathedral of st. john the divine. police returned fire as hundreds of people ran for cover.

witnesses say the gunman was yelling, kill me. he was fatally wounded by 1 of the 15 shots fired by the police who later found a bag full of suspicious items. >> also recovered is a bag that we believe belonged to the defendant. inside this bag was a full can of gasoline, rope, wire, multiple knives, a bible and tape. >> reporter: police say the gunman had a criminal history but motive remains unclear. we turn now to that scare on the tarmac at the las vegas airport. a man climbing onto the wing of a plane just before takeoff. pilots forced to take action and passengers recording all of it. here's abc's megan tevrizian. >> reporter: this morning, this man is behind bars after somehow getting onto the wing of a plane at mccarran airport in las vegas. >> here comes the fire trucks. >> reporter: just before takeoff, cell phone video shot by passengers inside the alaska airlines flight

shows a man waving his arms sitting, even crawling all on the plane's wing. authorities say alejandro carlson jumped the airport's fence and got onto the tarmac where he hoisted himself onto the wing as the flight was about to take off never entering the plane itself. >> first of all, it's not easy to get up on a wing by just jumping. i don't think you can do it. secondly, what somebody's doing up there especially on an airplane getting ready to take off is really puzzling. >> reporter: the pilot saw a man running to the aircraft and immediately called air traffic control. >> we have our motors shut down and apparently this individual is on the wing. is law enforcement on their way? >> reporter: after about 45 minutes officers used emergency exits to get onto the wing and approach carlson who was walking toward the tip of the wing. then after throwing off his shoes, he tried to climb the wing's edge beforing slide off and falling to the ground. >> there he goes. that's what needed to happen, honestly.

he wasn't coming down, and he was going to jump. >> reporter: officers immedia immediately arrested carlson who was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and booked him for trespassing and for a disregard for public safety. as for an explanation, authorities say mental illness or impairment is suspected. kenneth, deidre. coming up, the debate over whether jill biden should drop the doctor from her title. first the family kicked off a plane because of what their 2-year-old was refusing to do.

that struggle to get a 2-year-old to wear a mask ended with the family getting kicked off their flight. the plane was set to take off from denver to new jersey but returned to the gate when the toddler refused to comply with united airlines' mask mandate. a college basketball star was in critical but stable condition overnight after collapsing during a game. this video is hard to watch. florida gator keyontae johnson came out of a huddle and collapsed face first. no word on what caused his medical emergency. but over the summer like many of his teammates johnson tested positive for coronavirus. more now on the covid vaccine being delivered today. earlier i spoke to dr. yvonne maldonado about how the vaccine is being rolled out and what's next. now that the vaccine delivery has begun, what do you see as the biggest challenges when it comes to beginning these vaccinations? >> i think the biggest challenge has to do with operationalizing

a global effort and a national effort in a very rapid period of time, and fortunately the warp speed pfizer combination is a very organized one, so that part will go reasonably well, but i do think that communicating and tracking the vaccine as it goes out will be a little bit challenging for local hospitals and jurisdictions as this goes on. >> what do you feel about what we know and what we don't know, essentially how it can protect people and then from the information we have right now its limitations? >> it's quite effective, but it is effective so far as we know at preventing disease. what we don't know is, a, how long this immunity will last, and, b, whether it will protect against infection not just symptoms. >> as far as the category of people who are meant to receive it before others, so health care workers, nursing home residents,

staff, of course, of the nursing homes as well first in line, after that point it seems as if states decide where it goes after that. what is your take on the decision-making process? what do you expect to see? >> obviously the big push right now is what we call phase 1a, which is health care workers and long-term care facility residents and staff. now, beyond that, the next stage of phase 1b is essential workers of other types that are not health care workers, and then the next stage would be people over 65 and individuals with underlying conditions. there will be heavy federal guidance, but every state will be making their own decisions about allocation. i suspect most of them will be following the general guidelines that the cdc has put out. >> our thanks to dr. maldonado. another native american sports team name is on the way
