holiday season rolls out. when we can expect the first doses of coronavirus vaccines to arrive in the bay area. san francisco modifies its stay-at-home order with new social rules. the cheeky reply from one supervisor about what this means for dating. and we all know what happens in vegas doesn't always stay in vegas. but this video of a man walking on the wing of a plane is going viral as the woman who captured it shares her story. good morning. we made it to monday. it's december 14th. >> yes. >> what happened? >> i saw a cartoon over the weekend that showed the mask and no mask on a plane and the no-mask session was the guy sitting on the wing. so that -- it just struck humor in me. that's why i was laughing. i apologize. i'm sure there's a good story behind that. should we talk about what

desk with details on this massive distribution process going on right now. >> thank you. good morning. 145 hospitals nationwide this morning are preparing to receive the first doses of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine. in total 2.9 million doses will be shipped to all 50 states this week. the initial supply will go to front line health care workers, those in long-term care facilities and staff. u.s. marshals are traveling with each shipment and the fda has given priority -- or the faa has given priority to flights carrying the vaccines. u.p.s. says they're working fast and diligently. >> this morning they will be offloading those jets and those docks, they'll be delivering with our traditional brown trucks this morning to their vaccine locations. i think there's a race out there right now. as soon as the trucks pull out from their hubs around the country, they'll try to get to those locations as fast as they can. >> the covid tracking project reports the u.s. is averaging

300 more deaths per day than at the peak in the spring. a record more 108,000 americans are currently hospitalized with covid-19. in a few weeks another 2.9 million doses will be shipped to the same location for peoples second vaccination. the vaccine comes as several california counties are seeing troubling statistics. in san francisco, on saturday health officials reported 323 new cases. that's the highest number of new cases in a single day so far. in los angeles, numbers from the weekend indicate more than 4,000 people are hospitalized with covid-19. and in the san joaquin valley the number of icu beds is dangerously low. icu capacity is at 1.5%. working to build a better bay area. this morning that means tracking the race to get the vaccine to hospitals in our area. we've learned that the first doses could be delivered later today. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at ucsf

medical center in san francisco where it's all hands on deck. amy? >> yeah. they are expecting to receive the vaccine today or tomorrow and to start vaccinating some of their front line workers on wednesday. hospital employees say they are so excited about this, calling it the beginning of the end. hospitals have done a lot of work to prepare for the vaccine. they're not just going to open their doors and receive it, they have teams dedicated to the planning of receiving and distributing it. they have run practice drills. so they are ready to administer the shots. >> our preparation is pretty detailed because the pfizer vaccine is quite complicated. it needs to be stored at very cold levels, then you distribute it. and we're even doing simulation exercises to make sure we can vaccinate as many people as quickly and safely as possible. >> hospitals will be asking staff members to declare today whether they want the vaccine.

the money will be used for testing, contact tracing and other covid related health services. san francisco has updated its stay-at-home order. now you're allowed to see one other person from another household outdoors only. this means you can take a walk, hang out in a park and even play low-contact sports as long as you don't share equipment. san francisco supervisor matt haney pointed out something else you can do, date. he tweeted kind of jokingly this means dating is again allowed in san francisco, but you can only date outdoors and no double dates. okay. um mum. hi, mike. >> that's another conversation. we'll get back to that. >> yeah. >> we'll circle back to that one? >> maybe. >> i really feel you have something powerful to say there. >> we'll let it go. >> i'll give you 15 seconds of my time, i guess we're moving

on. all right. let's take a look at what's going on temperature-wise. it is definitely cooler this morning and it's damp outside. so it finally feels like winter. look at these temperatures. we've got right around 40 degrees through the tri valley and mid to upper 40s highway 4 and northern contra costa county. 36 in santa rosa, it was 34, which was close to that black ice territory. we like to see that temperature climb up the scale. we have 45 in oakland, 48 in san francisco. 44 in hayward and mountain view. and also san jose. now, notice by 9:00, temperatures don't change much. mid to upper 40s. as we head into the -- or late morning hours, we start to get around 50 to 52 at 11:00. if you're heading outside for lunch you'll warm up to 53 to 58 by 1:00. and by 3:00, we're still around 55 to 58. if you're heading out this evening, by 7:00, temperatures already starting to dip below 50

degrees into the upper 40s. as far as your activity planner, man, what a great weekend to hopefully have planted some winter vegetation. it's pretty sloppy out there, but the ground is wet. mostly sunny if you're exercising. if you're working at home or learning, remote learning, it will be damp out in the yard. try to keep the kids on the pavement if you can when they take a break. we'll look at wednesday's rain coming up. right now i want to look at the morning commute and say hi, jobina. nice to see you. >> thank you. good morning. we have a high wind advisory issued for the benicia bridge. outside of that no other advisories to report. let's show off the san mateo bridge. smooth traffic there. we have no crashes or blocking issues to report right now. and then lastly here the bay bridge. i just have a great traffic report. i will have an update on caltrain. they are suspending services, expanding other things. that will be in my next report

around 5:30. passengers on board a flight from las vegas to portland were delayed because a man got on to the wing of the plane. yes. and there is video. so, apparently this man hopped over a perimeter fence. you can see him crawling and then at one point he was walking on the wing. i want to see if we can show you that. yeah. there he goes. so, at one point he's trying to get up the wing's end. officers eventually made their way on to the wing. they tried to apprehend him. he fell over. the passenger who captured this video described what she saw. >> he had taken off his shoes, thrown them down. he was definitely very animated in his gestures and motions. he was raising his hands up. he was down on his knees. >> the man was taken into custody and then to a medical facility. the flight took off about four hours later. coming up at 7:00 on "gma,"

the electoral college is voting today to finalize results of the presidential election. overnight state lawmakers in michigan closed their offices because of threats of violence. jobina has more on the vote. >> the 538 members of the

electoral college will cast their votes in state legislators today. in michigan the state house will be closed during that due to what officials describe as credible threats of violence. it comes as a pro-trump rally in washington, d.c. on saturday turned violent. president trump and his allies lost nearly 50 cases since election day and the supreme court refused to hear a texas lawsuit that challenged votes in four battleground states. >> there's still these hail mary theories of how this could still be swung away from biden but it seems almost impossible that would happen. >> biden is expected to reach 270 electoral votes during california's meeting today. his transition team says he will give a speech tonight. after the vote today the next big date is january 6th when congress officially counts the electoral votes. kumasi? >> thank you. soon to be first lady jill biden is responding to a controversial op-ed arguing that she should drop the title of

doctor. author joseph epstein wrote in the "wall street journal" that the use of the title doctor feels fraudulent because she's not a medical doctor. at one point even called her kiddo. many people have called this op-ed sexist and responded online including jill biden herself. she tweeted together we will build a world where the accomplishments of our daughters will be celebrated rather than diminished. hillary clinton tweeted her name is dr. jill biden. get used to it. and the second gentleman elect tweeted the story would have never been written about a man. the editor of the "wall street journal" opinion section has defended epstein's piece calling the negative response to it a political strategy. nasa is celebrating its 30th anniversary of the hubble space telescope and they're sharing 30 never before seen images captured by hubble. you're looking at close-ups that

tonight around 32 in the north bay to 35 in san francisco. so we could have some frost out there. here's a look at wednesday at midnight. you can see that storm heading more for the north bay as we head through wednesday morning. could be a truckee morning for travel. heading through thursday afternoon the storm is gone. it's out of here. it will be wednesday morning through about thursday morning. we'll have a chance of some rain possibly nearing what we had over the weekend. that's impressive from back-to-back storms considering we're in the middle of a drought. here's my accuweather 7-day forecast. because it's one storm coming in in two sections like the last one did, we have a 1 for wednesday. a 1 for thursday, and then saturday and sunday because it's trending drier we'll keep a chance of rain in there. no storm impact scale. that's your forecast for now. let's get back to kumasi. >> thank you. as part of our effort to build a better bay area, abc7 has been tracking the new way to holiday during the pandemic.

as luz pena found out, it's changed many christmas items. >> reporter: they come in all sizes and picking the perfect christmas tree is a tough jop. 1 1/2-year-old mira would agree. >> last year we did it, one of those. >> last year she was seven months old. >> for the anderson family there's one professional christmas tree picker and she's humble. >> all of us. >> she did. >> you did. we approved. >> reporter: but this year they almost didn't get to choose their favorite tree. more people staying at home means more demand for trees. christmas tree farms are reporting a tree shortage. at the guardsman tree lot in san francisco's fort mason, they are running out fast. >> normally we go through about 7,500 trees. this year we're down to about 6,000.

>> last year, two weeks from christmas, they had close to 1,000 trees in this lot. this year they have 300 christmas trees left. and as some businesses reap the benefits of more families staying at home during the holidays, others who used to thrive during this season are experiencing the opposite. >> this is what we use to make the tamales. >> reporter: every year at least two weeks before christmas, sergio gomez would sell over 5,000 tamales for family gatherings and parties. this year he's seen an 86% decrease. >> this year i have only like 20 orders. >> reporter: many counting down the days to 2021, searching for normalcy during the holidays. this family found it at union square. >> we have to get out, get a breather, get a break, get some fresh air, enjoy the holidays. >> reporter: in san francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. >> it turns out everyone is getting in the holiday spirit. scuba drivers in brazil are

hope you had a great weekend. up with with much-needed rain. it's over now. there's more coming wednesday and thursday. i'll get to that after we talk about the king tide at 10:19 in san francisco. and about 7.1 feet. the highest king tide this cycle is today. that's why we have a closal flood advisory. and also you can see parts of the san pablo bay all the way through 1:00 tomorrow. we'll have another king tide tomorrow around 11:00. fog is a little bit of an issue around santa rosa and down into the monterey bay. looking from sutro tower, a little bit of a light north to south flow of winds. some of that may slip down towards petaluma. for the most part a mostly sunny afternoon. temperatures in the mid to upper 50s where we should be for this time of year. here is kumasi. >> thank you. this morning more than a half million doses of pfizer's covid-19 have been shipped out. more will be leaving today. the first americans are expected to be vaccinated within just a

few hours. jopz jobina is at the live desk. >> thank you. surgeon general jerome adams is reassuring americans that the vaccine is safe. on "gma" this morning he said he will get the vaccine when it's available to him. new video overnight from fedex shows workers making their first delivery of the vaccine, 2.9 million doses will be shipped nationwide this week. the initial supply will go to front line health care workers, those in long-term care facilities and staff. adams stressed that in order to end the pandemic enough people need to get vaccinated. >> we're getting the people who are most likely to be impacted vaccinated first. we also recognize there's a symbolic part of someone like me getting vaccinated, giving people confidence that they can get vaccinated as well. when they tell me i can, i will. 95% effectiveness means we can put this pandemic away if we get enough people vaccinated. >> president trump says he is now delays a plan for white house staff to receive the vaccine in the coming days.

pfizer officials say that even though the delivery is under way right now, production of the actual vaccine has been nonstop. they expect to work 24/7 for at least the next year. >> thank you. the vaccine rollout is coming as california continues to set records with the number of people in the hospital with covid-19. the state topped 13,000 hospitalizations yesterday. more than 2,800 people are in the icu. both of those numbers are single day highs. the bay area's icu capacity dipped to 16.7%, even closer to the state's threshold of 15%. there were more than 30,000 newly diagnosed cases of coronavirus statewide over the weekend. we are working to build a better bay area. every local county is on stand by waiting for the first doses of the pfizer vaccine to get delived. amy hollyfield is live at ucsf in san francisco.

that delivery could come later today? >> today or tomorrow. and then hoping to start giving it to people on wednesday. ucsf is saying they're one of seven hospitals in the state that will be receiving the vaccine this week. they are thinking they will receive about 1,000 doses in this first shipment. hospital workers say they are very excited, calling this the beginning of the end. one doctor called this a miracle of modern molecular biology. they worked hard to prepare for the vaccine. they have a team that has even conducted drills to practice receiving it, storing it, and administering the vaccine. >> they get people together and go to the stores where the vaccine will be distributed, you bring it to the place where you will vaccinate people. you simulate how to put it in the refrigerator, time everything. time the people moving through the vaccination line and they have to sit for about 15 minutes after being vaccinated.

"the shot: race for the vaccine." new this morning, google employees will be working from home longer than expected. the mountain view-based company pushed back the planned return to the office to september of next year. originally it was january, then july. the ceo says that google is testing a flexible work week. employees would work at least three days a week in the office and then work from home on the other days. san francisco's historic cliff house restaurant, which has been serving customers for 157 years will be shutting down. the restaurant is so iconic that the announcement was the number two trend on google overnight. the announcement was posted on the restaurant's website. while the pandemic definitely has not helped, the owners say the closure is coming as a result of delays by the national park service to reach an operating contract. cliff house has been running on short-term contracts since the last long-term contract expired back in 2018. we reached out to the national

park service for comment. we have not heard back yet. the cliff house will be closing permanently on december 31st. only on abc7 news, a group of surfers being credited for saving another surfer' life and rescuing him from a beach. it happened sunday afternoon. the surfer was riding a 6 to 8-foot wave when he gained too much speed and crashed head first into a rock. a surfer at the scene who is also an emt rushed to perform cpr on him after another group pulled him from the water. >> it looks like he had a gash on his head as well. he probably hit the rock and became unconscious. someone was pumping on him, trying to get his compressions in, and the airway. >> the san francisco fire department says that the quick action of these surfers may have changed the outcome of the rescue. >> the cpr being administered right away is really a positive

fog out there. but not in the south bay. mainly up in the north bay. down in the south bay, lingering clouds from yesterday's rain. that's keeping us in the low to mid 40s. 45 in alum rock. los altos hills and the santa teresa neighborhood. unnorth it up north, mid to upper 30s. the thickest fog is around santa rosa and sebastopol. that will be around through the morning commute. here's a look from sutro tower, 39 degrees in san francisco. 53 to 55 at noon with mostly sunny conditions. pretty much the same temperature at 4:00. we won't warm much today. back to the mid to upper 40s with increasing high clouds at 7:00. as far as your commute, dry all day on the water. mass transit is cooler this morning. dress appropriately. we have that fog to contend with during the morning commute, otherwise it will be easy, at least weather wise during the evening. at midnight wednesday, the next storm, the bulk of this rain

welcome back. the race for a vaccine affects all of us. being vac natur vaccinated willo build a better bay area. when will you be able to get a shot? here's my report on the likely timeline. >> reporter: since the coronavirus started spreading across the globe in late 2019, scientists have been looking for a vaccine. now that vaccines are proven, when will you be able to get the vaccine? it will ultimately be up to each state to determine who will get the vaccine and when. but federal guidance from the centers for disease control gives us an idea of the timeline. who goes first?

the first doses of a vaccine were made available in december 2020. those first shots are earmarked for those who are at highest risk of infection, health care workers and nursing home residents. because the vaccines require two separate shots 21 days apart, the second batch of vaccines delivered in january of 2021 will likely go to those same people. by february, the next round of vaccinations are expected. the cdc recommends these shots be given to the next highest risk people. that includes people over the age of 65, people with medical conditions that put them at risk of death if infected, essential workers like those employed in education, food, transportation and law enforcement. again, because it will take two doses, it will likely take two months to vaccinate that round of people. one thing to keep in mind, if you have been infected with the coronavirus you'll likely need to wait until the next round of vaccinations. that's because people who

it was a rainy weekend but shoppers in pacifica still got out there for a chance to check out different christmas goodies. look at that santa. wow. the long board margarita bar put on a holiday market in eureka square. stores put out shopping booths for people to check out while they walked by. while music played, santa drove by on a motorcycle spreading a little holiday cheer. if you are sending gifts to loved ones and want to get them there in time for christmas, tomorrow is the deadline for the u.s. postal service. that's the last day to ensure delivery for christmas for retail ground shipping. that's for large packages too heavy for priority mail. shipping takes between 2 and 8 days. get on it. virtual classes have been hard for teachers and students this year. some students created a way to say thanks to their educators. during their final classes
