san francisco general hospital just hours away from giving away the first doses in the bay area. governor newsom promising safe and fair distribution of the vaccine. his plan to make sure that happens. and we are taking you inside san francisco's historic cliffhouse restaurant. a final look inside as it prepares to close its doors. good morning, everybody. it is tuesday, december 14th. >> we will get to that. obviously, another big day on the vaccine front. we'll start with meteorologist mike nicco. good morning, mike. >> good morning, kumasi, jobina, everybody. santa rosa one mile visibility and you can see from our sutro camera everybody else pretty clear this morning and slightly cooler than this time yesterday. by about three or four degrees. you may notice that when you step outside. winds are calm drifting to the south so that fog will mainly stay around santa rosa and the

usual spots. high clouds will increase and not as much sunshine as yesterday and upper 50s around the bay to even a 60 possible in the south bay, east bay and north bay. we'll give you an updated timetable on tomorrow's rain coming up. back to you for news. this morning a new milestone in the pandemic. the bay area has passed 200,000 covid-19 cases. the surge is coming as the roll out of the vaccine gets under way in california. now, the state is planning to distribute 300,000 doses of pfiz pfizer's vaccine in the coming days. so far 33,000 doses have been delivered to four locations around the state. they include san francisco general hospital, st. joseph hospital in eureka and the naval medical center in san diego and kaiser medical center. governor newsom as health care workers were vaccinated yesterday. a nurse had this message of encouragement for the public.

>> i also want people to know that the vaccine is safe and when it's made widely available, i encourage everyone to take it so we can get rid of this pandemic and get back to normal life. >> the governor says in addition to the pfizer vaccine, california also anticipates getting 672,000 doses of mmu moderna's vaccine once it's authorized by the fda. that could happen later this week. the first round of vaccinations will start right here in the bay area. health care workers at san francisco general hospital will be getting the first doses and that's one of the four locations in california that received the vaccine. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield live outside the hospital on vaccine watch. part of our effort to build a better bay area. and, amy, i know you have more on the timeline. >> hi, kumasi. yeah, they'll start giving the shots today. they've got 2,000 doses and san francisco general will start today. this is one of four locations in california to receive the vaccine.

they got it yesterday. people who have volunteered to go first will receive it today. and they will have the mayor and the health director here for the big event. front line providers will start getting it tomorrow. employees will have a choice. they don't have to get the vaccine. but doctors hope they will take it. >> and i do honestly believe and really want to emphasize that the risks of the vaccine are lower than the risk of this virus. all the information we have so far. >> these are doses from pfizer. the moderna vaccine is expected to start arriving next week. so, a lot of shipments expected for the bay area. doctors say it is important to remember this comes as we're seeing a surge in cases. icu bed capacity in the bay area has gone down from 26% to 17% in under a week. they emphasize that people still need to do their part while we

wait for these vaccines to reach everyone and to take effect everyone still needs to be vigilant. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. in the north bay, marin county forced to delay its vaccination plan. expected to receive its first doses yesterday and now they won't arrive until tomorrow. immunizations won't begin until thursday. matt willis tells abc7 news that marin was at the top of the list to get the vaccine because of its ultracold storage availability. >> 48 hours over the long term doesn't make a big difference and it might give the teams a little bit longer to really be even more prepared. >> marin county is expecting to receive more than 2,000 doses of the pfizer vaccine in this first round and then another 2,000 next week. governor newsom is promising safe and equitable distribution calling it vaccinate all 58 referring to all the counties in california. jobina fortson at the live desk

with more on what local leaders think is the best way to accomplish that goal. jobina? >> launched a newly branded campaign with fairness and equity at the heart of it. serve communities hardest hit by covid-19 say they've learned a lot from setting up covid-19 testing sites. we asked those leaders about their ideas on how to deliver on the governor's promise. >> consider people who are forced to go out every day for different circumstances to be some of the first people in line to receive the vaccination. >> we have to make sure, same thing, that we figure out where is the density of folks that we're trying to serve. and we have to be able to set up shop right then and there. >> some ideas being tossed around include flexible vaccination hours serving workers in fields and door knocking. hard to reach families as they hope the governor will listen to their advice and understand what

is happening in these hard hp hit communities. reggie? >> thank you. all this week in-depth coverage with our team of reporters and medical experts. if you have questions, please, send them. we'll try to answer them. head to nbc7news.com/vaccine. we're hearing from the new york nurse that was the first to receive the covid-19 vaccine here in the united states. sandra lindsay talked about the historic moment on "gma" this morning. she was injected yesterday. linday lives in queens, one of the hardest hit counties in the whole country. she wants to instill trust in the vaccine. >> i think it was incredibly important for me to lead by example like i do every day. and to send the message to people might be on the fence that they should trust the science. they should trust the science and listen to the experts. >> we will hear more from

lindsay later this morning but take a look at this. the vaccinations are already under way today. this is at the university of pittsburgh medical center where health care workers lined up to get the shot. remember, if a region hits 15%, it striggers a stay-at-home order and right now the bay area i, i u capacity is almost there. 17.8%. most of our counties have started the stay-at-home order before the hospitals reached the 15. northern california is in the best shape. 29% capacity and things are really dire in san joaquin valley. you see that. zero percent. they have run out of icu beds for the second time in just three days. santa clara county is reducing the quarantine time for people who have traveled or been exposed to coronavirus but not showing any symptoms. it was two weeks but now it's going to be ten days. this aligns with the same guidelines put out yesterday by the california department of public health. new developments in oakland

where in-person classes will not be resuming as soon as expected. the oakland unified school district said that it will push back the start date which was set for january 25th. that's because of this recent surge in covid-19 cases we've been seeing. the district hasn't given a new date, but said that it is planning to reopen schools in phases when alameda county is in the orange reopening tier. even with a blanket of high clouds covering us, temperatures a couple degrees cooler this morning. hi, again. let's take a look at what is going on in our neighborhoods in san francisco. 46 in the sunset to 49 and in park prusidio and other neighborhoods fog around novado and temperatures there running around 40. 39 in american canyon and walnut creek and 38 in palo alto and pleasanton and santa clara some of our cooler spots at 37 degrees. dress warmly this morning. at least there is no ice to scrape. that's later in the forecast.

high clouds a main stay as will 50s whether it's 55 across the board at noon or 53 to 57 at 4:00. and back around 47 to 50 where it will be dry this evening, but not tomorrow evening. here's a look at san jose. mostly cloudy and 41. a nice day if you're at home working or learning. it's going to be dry. king tides around 11:04. some flooding is possible and we have some dangerous surf to deal with at our beaches through tomorrow. so, tomorrow we'll have areas of light rain before the real deal or the main event i'll say comes in during the evening eband overnight hours with light to moderate rain. future radar and you can see a few showers across northern sonoma, mendocino, lake counties. tomorrow during the morning, the rest of us may be a shower or two, but there you go. by the evening hours, especially up to midnight. tons of yellow and orange out there. moderate rain. notice by about 7:00 thursday morning, it's gone. so, it's a fast moving system.

president-elect joe biden is heading to georgia today to campaign for democrats in that state's senate runoff race and that will determine who controls the senate. and this comes as the electoral college voted to formalize biden's win yesterday but not everyone is accepting those results. jobina is at the live desk now with how republicans are responding. >> thank you, kumasi. the electorate confirms biden's wins but president trump and many of his allies are still refusing to accept that he lost. a group of house republicans plan to challenge the results when congress meets on january 6th to count the electoral

college's votes. it is a long shot and any objections are unlikely to work. >> the integrity of our elections remains in tact and now it's time to turn the page as we've done throughout our history to unite and to heal. >> the court sent a clear signal to president trump that they would be no part of an unprecedented part on our democracy. >> senior republicans have now acknowledged biden's victory. paul mitchell says he's leaving the party and becoming an independent because of the party's ongoing denial. vice president mike pence will oversee that final count in a few weeks and likely have to declare publicly that trump lost the election. back to you. >> thanks, jobina. attorney general bill barr is in the last days. he was leaving with a tweet yesterday. the move came after tensions

flared. barr contradicted the president saying there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud. barr's last day will be december 23rd. the deputy attorney general jeff rosen will become acting attorney general. all i can say is look at this video. two kangaroos captured on video fighting on a golf course in australia. what was going on, we don't know. but you can see both of them balancing on there. they're punching, they're kicking each other and apparently the other kangaroo is just watching. the woman who took this video said it looked like a turf battle. we do know that female kangaroos can become aggressive if they feel like their joeys are being threatened and male kangaroos often fight for status. what? >> look, to me this is just kangaroos being kangaroos and

we have dangerous surf and the potential for flooding along the coast and into the san francisco bay and the san pablo bay due to king tides and also due to the storm that is coming and bring dangerous surf that will get even higher and more thunderous as we head through tomorrow. so don't turn your back on the water. enjoy it from afar and listening to the thundering waves from a distance that is safe. let's look at what is going on. sutro tower high clouds and mixing with our stars and it will mix with our sunshine after the 7:1 today. seasonal temperatures. we'll have patchy fog and drizzle and best chance along the coast and up in the north bay tonight and then we'll get our better chance of moderate rain tomorrow night through thursday morning. weekend, partly cloudy, dry and little bit warmer than average. today we're pretty close with upper 50s to around 60 degrees and tonight you can see the thickest cloud cover across the north bay and even see some green and mendocino possible

during the overnight hours. temperatures in the upper 30s to mid 40s. here's a look at satellite and radar. you can see some of the high clouds out there. that's because we have a cold front passing to our north. it will not bring us any rain but it will as far south as possibly eureka and that's dpoeg to open the door for our next storm. here's a look at how much rain to expect. remember during the day it is going to be light. once the sun sets it will move from north to south and lose a lot of moisture up in the north bay where we could have a third to nearly three-quarters of an inch of rain and the rest of us a third of an inch of rain and down in the south bay up to 0.2. the rain will be gone easily by thursday afternoon. and you can see temperatures starting to push into the low to mid 60s this weekend. even out to the coast and that's going to be about three to eight degrees warmer than average. that's your forecast for now. >> thank you. new details from the state on youth sports and adult

recreation sports during the pandemic. the department of public health says competition will not be allowed in california until at least january 25th. competitions have been associated with multiple outbreaks. the date will be reassessed by january 4th based on disease transmission trends. new developments this morning about san francisco's iconic cliff house restaurant. the long-time proprietors blame the national park service for not choosing a long-term operator when their contract expired. abc7 news was there when the general manager you see there started packing up. >> somebody didn't get their job done in a timely manner and get the lease out when it should have been. i'm angry about how it's been handled and very sad that it ends like this. >> well national park service said in a statement, quote, we, too, are disappointed by the

rosa. three quarter mile visibility. there's been reports around novato of some fog and watch out on 101. fog along the coast, not too bad. at least in half moon bay the visibility is seven miles and the fog is pretty much going to stay in those areas. all right this afternoon even with high clouds dimming oursontiourson ti sunshine just a little bit. 56 at half moon bay and the rest of us around 57 to 59 around the bay and about 57 to 60 inland. we'll give you a timetable for tomorrow's rain coming up next. here's kumasi. >> thank you, mike. breaking news this morning, data released by the fda shows the moderna's vaccine is highly protective and prevents severe cases of covid-19. jobina is at the live desk with more on how soon this could be authorized. jobi jobina. >> this new data will ensure the fda grants emergency authorization by this friday. a panel of experts will meet

thursday to hear from moderna and fda scientists before recommending authorization. that means americans could have access to a second vaccine as soon as next week. the fda says some side effects like fever, headache and fatigue, but it is not dangerous. about 6 million doses could be distributed across the country by next week. reggie. >> thanks, jobina. health care workers across california ready to roll up their sleeves today to receive the covid-19 vaccine. the first doses distribted and already we're learning 400,000 more are coming to our state next week. the rollout is under way in the bay area. san francisco general hospital will start vaccinating workers this morning. it was one of four facilities statewide to receive the first batch of doses yesterday. contra costa and san mateo counties all expected to receive their shipments today. their first doses will also go to health care workers and those

working in long-term care facilities. tracking the roll out as part of our vaccine watch here at abc7 news as we work to build a better bay area, a few hours away from the first doses given out at san francisco general and amy hollyfield is live there this morning. amy, do we have any idea how many people actually get the shot today? >> i don't know about today, reggie. san francisco general received 2,000 doses. hard to imagine they administered that many today. but they're going to start this morning and start with people who volunteered to go first. and they're going to make a big deal about it. this morning they'll have the mayor here and the director of the health department. and then on wednesday they'll start really giving it out to those front line workers. those first line providers who want it. doctors say they are thankful for this life-saving vaccine. they are trying to spread the word, though, that people should feel good about taking it. employees do have a choice. they don't have to get the vaccine, but doctors really hope that they will.

>> i understand concerned about the vaccine particularly given the isis the most rapidly a vaccine has been developed really in history and it is a new type of vaccine, a new approach to vaccines. i understand some trepidation about this. but all of the science, all of the data would suggest that the risk of the vaccines are far, far less than the risk of this disease. >> doctors are saying this is something to celebrate, but no reason to get complacent. pointing out this comes as we're seeing a surge in cases. in san francisco, there are 148 people hospitalized with covid-19. 37 of them in the icu. so, they emphasize that people still need to do their part while we wait for these vaccines to reach everyone and take effect and we all still need to be vigilant. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you, amy. in the south bay the vaccine is set to arrive later today in

santa clara county and that's the bay area county hardest hit by covid. about 13% of the icu beds are available right now in santa clara county and it expects to receive more than 17,000 doses of the pfizer vaccine. about 3,900 of those will go to stanford health care which plans to start vaccinating its workers on saturday. >> i trust the science says the vaccine is safe and sign me up, i'm ready for it. i'm ready for this to end. a lot of suffering for many people. >> county fl ay officials say t expect to receive 39,000 doses of the moderna vaccine once the fda approves it. in the east bay, we're hearing from seniors in nursing homes. besides front line health care workers they're among the first to get the vaccine. >> i'm anxious to have it. and whenever they bring it, i'll take it. >> that is 89-year-old gardner she lives at byron park, a

senior community that includes both assisted and independent living. >> we are excited relief is on the way. distributed with our annual flu clinics. we partnered with cvs and make sure everything is set up in advance. >> pleasant choice in aging and adult health care serve a different senior population. many of them live alone. they're working on a massive public media campaign to make sure those who need it the most have access to the vaccine as soon as it is available. teachers could move to the front of the line for the covid-19 vaccine. county supervisors say advance resolution urging the state for employees. failed to provide enough resources to allow schools to reopen. >> it is time for governor newsom to prioritize public education in a real substantial way for the first time during

coast. speaking of grinch, you can't go near the surf today or tomorrow whether it's coastal tides that are swelling to larger than average or just this next storm bringing in nearly 25-foot breakers. so, you could see the spray there coming up from the surface. just going to continue to get more dangerous as we head through today and tomorrow. in fact, let me show you all the advisories out there. coastal flood advisory for king tide and specifically today at 11:04 in san francisco and another king tide tomorrow and it's low enough that right now the national weather service is stopping our coastal flood advisory with today's king tide cycle. let's move on and talk about the beach hazard statement. dangerous sneaker waves out ahead of our storm and once our storm gets here tomorrow, it's going to produce a high surf advisory with breakers up to 25 feet in favored areas. i can see the surfers getting excited about that.
