>> the risk of the vaccines are lower than the risk of this virus from everything we have. >> we have more san franciscans suffering today from covid-19 than we ever had before. >> i encourage everyone to take it so that we can get rid of this pandemic and get back to normal. making news right now at 6:00, the bay area waking up to two major milestones this morning. one bringing hope and the other proving how far we have to go in fighting coronavirus. the region now surpassing 200,000 cases but the very first vaccination shots are set to be administered in just a few hours. >> that gives us hope. good morning on this tuesday, december 15th. we will get to the big vaccine news. first, we check in with meteorologist mike nicco. hi, mike. >> hey, reggie, kumasi, jobina. hi, everybody on this tuesday i'm watching fog up in the north bay as you would expeth. as you look from sutro tower everything is clear underneath the canopy of high clouds as a

cold front passes to the north. not do anything for us today. very light winds and most of that fog will stay right where it is lthrough the morning commute. high clouds, sunshine and about 56 to 60. temperatures pretty close to average today. i'll give you an hour-by-hour look at tomorrow's rain coming up. let's get back to kumasi and reggie. >> thank you, mike. today is a big day for the bay area. the very first covid-19 vaccine shots are going to be administered in just a few hours. >> we saw history made in other parts of the country yesterday and now it's our turn. governor newsom was at kaiser los angeles medical center as the first front line medical workers in the state got vaccinated. the very first icu nurse helen cordoba. the first shipment arrive monday along with hospitals in san diego, eureka and as you can see right there, san francisco general hospital. >> this morning that is where we find abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield live at the hospital

as part of our vaccine watch coverage. good morning, amy. >> hi, good morning, kumasi. doctors are using this day to celebrate this vaccine but also as a day to get across some very key points at they really want to emphasize. zuckerberg general hospital here in san francisco received 2,000 doses of the vaccine and they will give them today to those who volunteer to go first and the mayor and the health director will be here to commemorate the big event. but doctors are really emphasizing that this doesn't get complacent and we're in the middle of a surge of cases pointing out in san francisco there are currently 14 a148 peo hospitalize would covid-19 and 37 of those are in the intensive care. >> it has never been more important to be very careful. but this really is exciting news and i think it's as big a step forward as we have seen in the pandemic, quite honestly. >> the other key point they are

trying to make today is that the vaccine is safe. calling the risk of the vaccine lower than the risk of the virus. so they really want to emphasize that point to people who are concerned. hospital employees are not required to take it just strongly encouraged. this first round is from pfizer. they expect a shipment of the moderna vaccine to start arriving next week. but those first doses will be administered here today. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield. >> thank you, amy. new this morning we're hearing from the new york nurse who was the first to receive the covid-19 vaccine in the united states. the icu nurse from long island jewish medical center was injected yesterday. li i lindsay lives in queens one of the hardest hit counties. >> it was important for me to

lead by example like i do every day and to send a message to people that might be on the fence that they should trust the science. they should trust the science and listen to the experts. >> we will hear more from lindsay later this morning and look at this, vaccinations already under way. university of pittsburgh medical center where they lined up to get the shot. in the north bay marin county was forced to delay its vaccination plan. it was expected to receive the first doses yesterday and now they won't arrive until tomorrow. immunizations won't begin until thursday. matt willis told abc7 news marin was at the top of the list to get the vaccine because of its ultracold storage availability. >> 48 hours over the long term doesn't make a big difference and it might give the teams a little bit longer to really be even more prepared. >> marin county expecting to receive 2,000 doses of the pfizer vaccine in this first

round and another 2,000 next week. governor newsom is promising safe and equitable distribution of the vaccine. he launched a new campaign calling vaccinate all 58. that's referring to all the counties here in california. jobina fortson at the live desk tracking that and what local leaders think is the best way to accomplish the goal. >> thank you, reggie. governor newsom launched the newly branded campaign with fairness and equity at the heart of it. santa clara county leaders who serve communities hardest hit from covid-19 learned a lot from setting up testing sites. we asked those leaders about their ideas on how to deliver on the governor's promise. >> consider people who are forced to go out every day for different circumstances to be some of the first people in line to receive the vaccination. >> we have to make sure, same thing, that we figure out where is the density of folks that we're trying to serve. and we have to be able to set up shop right then and there.

now. richmond san rafael bridge. happening today contra costa county will vote on a proposal to raise fines for people who violate covid-19 restrictions. approved an ordinance to fine people and businesses that defy health orders like not wearing a mask or staying open despite the orders. fines start at $100 for people and $250 for businesses. the board will consider raising those during a meeting later this morning. to the south bay santa clara county reducing its recommended quarantine time for people who have traveled or exposed to coronavirus but not showing any symptoms. it was two weeks and now it will be ten days. this aligns with california's state health guidelines that were put out yesterday. another tech billionaire sayisay and where they are choosing to live instead. the fda isn't authorizing just covid-19 vaccines right

new developments in oakland where in-person classes will not resume as soon as expected. it will be pushing back a start date which was set for january 25th. that is because of the recent surge in covid-19 cases. the district hasn't given a new date, but says its plan is to reopen schools in phases when alameda county is in the orange reopening tier. developing news this morning lawmakers unveiled a $908 billion coronavirus relief bill package. the first offers a $300 bonus to unemployment benefits and extends moratoriums on evictions

and does not include stimulus checks. give funds to state and local governments and provides liability insurance for businesses. congress has until the end of the week to pass those bills. president-elect joe biden is heading to georgia today to campaign for democrats. and that state's senate runoff race that will determine who controls the senate. this comes as the electoral college comes to formalize biden's win yesterday jobina is at the live desk. >> giving him 306 electoral votes but president trump and many of his allies are still refusing to accept that he lost a group of house republicans plan to challenge the results when congress meets on january 6th to count the electoral college votes. experts say it is a long shot and any objections are unlikely to work. >> the integrity of our elections remains in tact. and now it's time to turn the page as we've done throughout our history.

has approved genetically modified pigs that promise to be safely eaten by people with certain allergies. this is the first time in history that a genetically modified animal has been approved for both food and biomedical purposes. so they're called gal safe pigs and they can help people who have alpha gout allergy which could be triggered by tick bites. the pig could produce organs for transplant and tissues like skin grafts. now, if we go in the store, will there be on the bacon will it s s say? >> i hope it's labeled. right. you would think after going through all that trouble. >> let's look at the positive. what if you really like bacon

trivalley and low to mid 40s in northern contra costa county and the warm spots mid to upper 40s around oakland, san carlos, pacifica and san francisco and else where low to mid 40s. this afternoon, 57 to 60 are spread around the bay and inland and 56 along the coast. tonight, upper 30s to mid 40s with the upper 30s being in our inland valleys. all right, here's a look at what's happening. high pressure sinking to the south with this clockwise flow a cold front that will bring rain to crescent city and eureka and notice this next storm looks nothing like the one over the weekend which was a moderate atmospheric river. this one is just a cold front with a collection of the greatest amounts of water right along the cold front and that's why we're going to have a small window of about 12 hours of rain wednesday night through thursday morning and why the rainfall amounts will be so light from a tenth of an inch in the south bay to a third of the inch around the bay to three quarters

happening tomorrow an abc news exclusive with vp elect kamala harris. harris first solo interview since the election and you can watch it tomorrow morning at 7:00 right here on abc7. first developments about oracle. first announced the company was moving headquarters to texas and now billionaire founder larry ellison says he's also moving but his address hawaii. according to our media partner, "mercury news" ellison will use the power of zoom to work from the island of lanai. the former ceo is still the chairman and chief technology officer of oracle. he spent $300 million in 2012 to buy almost all of lanai. ellison is not the only big executive to move out of california and bay area elon musk moved to texas. i haven't been to lanai and i'm hawaiian. >> you can't go because he bought it. >> i guess not.

new developments about san francisco's iconic cliff house restaurant. the longtime proprietors blaming the park service for not choosing a long-term operator when their contract expired. abc news was there as the general manager started to pack up some of the items. the family operating it first took over the franchise in 1977. >> someone didn't get their job done in a timely manner and get the lease out when it should have been. i'm angry at how it should have been handled and very sad it ends like this. >> the national park service said in a statement, quote, we, too, are disappointed by the temporary disruption of services. we do not have any further information to provide at this time. it's not clear what is going to become of the iconic building. >> that is a shame. >> can we go back to lanai. i'm sorry. >> oh, yeah. go back to it. >> he bought up most of the island. you can still go. >> you can still go.

for covid-19. sharon osbourne tweeted she was hospitalized briefly but did not say what her symptoms were. the 68-year-old co-host of "the talk" is in isolation and her husband ozzy osbourne tested negative. another host said she also tested positive and the show "the talk" is currently on hiatus. officials in australia said they trained a dog to sniff out covid positive people. the rest of the four-legged friend will complete their training by 2021. the dogs could be stationed at international airports where test results are not immediately available. canine experts believe the dogs are not sensing the virus itself, but instead biological messages of an immune response. next at 6:30, we get you right back out live to san francisco general hospital as we await the very first vaccinations in the bay area in just a few hours. and the push to prioritize.

temperatures this afternoon and spot on with where we should be. mid to upper 50s with a 60 in morgan hill and san jose and fairfield along with santa rosa the warm spots. more on that rain coming up. back to you for the news. health care workers are rolling up their sleeves across the state. the first of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine dose is being distributed and we're learning 400,000 more doses will be headed to our state next week. here's what we know for today's shipment schedule in the bay area. santa clara, contra costa and san mateo will receive their first shipments and alameda should receive theirs as soon as today. san francisco general hospital will actually start vaccinations just a few hours from now. tracking the roll out is part of our vaccine watch week here at abc7 and abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is at sf general awaiting the first shots to be given here in the bay area. hi, amy. >> hi, there. yeah, they got their doses

yesterday. 2,000 of them here at zuckerberg general hospital and they do plan to start administering them this morning. people who have volunteered to go first will be the first ones to receive it today and they will have the mayor here and the health director will be here for the big event. front line providers will start getting it tomorrow. doctors say they are thankful for this life-saving vaccine but also trying to spread the word to people that they should feel good about taking it. they want people to feel confident that it is safe. employees do have a choice. they will not be forced to get the vaccine. it is up to them. the doctors really hope that they will take it. >> i understand concerns about the vaccine particularly given this is the most rapidly a vaccine has been developed really in history and it is a new type of vaccine this mrna vaccine that is a new approach to vaccines and i understand

some trepidation about this. but all the science and data show the risks of the vaccine are far, fare less than the risk of this disease. t. >> another big message that doctors are pushing today is that this vaccine is no reason to get complacent. pointing out that this is coming as we are seeing a surge in cases. in san francisco, there are 148 people hospitalized with covid-19. 37 are in the icu. they emphasize that people will still need to do their part while we wait for these vaccines to reach everyone and take effect and we all still need to be vigilant. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you, amy. well, today governor newsom is expected to give us another update on the state's response to the pandemic. you can watch that at 10:00 this morning. it's going to be streaming on abc7news.com as well as our free app. in the south bay, the vaccine is set to arrive later today in santa clara county and that is the bay area county that

is hit hardest by covid. 13% of the icu beds are available in santa clara county right now and it expects to receive more than 17,000 doses of the pfizer vaccine. about 3,900 of those will go to stanford health care which plans to start vaccinating workers on saturday. >> i trust the science says that the vaccine is safe and and sign me up, i'm ready for it. i'm ready for this to end. a lot of suffering for many people. >> county fl ay officials say t expect to receive 39,000 doses of the moderna vaccine once the fda approves it. we are hearing from seniors in nursing homes besides front line health care workers they're going to be among the first to get the vaccine. >> i'm anxious to have it and whenever they bring it, i'll take it. >> that's 89-year-old gardner. she lives at walnut creek's byron park.

a senior community that includes assisted and independent living. pleasant hill's choice in aging and mt. diablow center serve a different senior population. many of them live alone. officials say they're working on a massive media campaign to make sure those that need it have access to the vaccine as soon as it is available. now, let's talk about teachers. they could be moving to the front of the line when it comes to the covid-19 vaccine. a committee of san francisco supervisors has advanced a resolution urging the state to prioritize school employees. supervisor hillary roanen say state officials have failed to provide enough resources to allow schools to reopen. >> it is time for governor newsom to prioritize public education in a real substantial way for the first time during this public health crisis. >> city officials say that it's still unclear where teachers

will fall on the state's ranking of the essential workers for vaccinations but that is expected to be decided in the coming weeks. the new york nurse who was the first american to receive the covid-19 vaccine says she's feeling great. jobina fortson at the live desk with more on how she's easing people's worries. >> very impressive here. sandra lindsay was on "gma" talking about the historic moments across the nation. the icu nurse from long island jewish medical center volunteered to get the injection. she is one of 2.9 million front line workers and nursing home residents, excuse me, receiving the pfizer vaccine. lindsay lives in queens, one of the hardest hit counties in the entire country. she was asked how she eases the fears of those who are skeptical. >> so, continue to share my experience, share what inspired me to take the vaccine. to share what i have seen on the front lines.

what my team and i have been through for the past since march. the vaccine is safe. what is not safe is contracting covid-19. >> lindsay says she has no fever and is experiencing no side effects, in fact, she said on a scale of one to ten, her pain is at a one. we're happy to hear that, kumasi. >> thank you, jobina. this morning we're also hearing from dr. anthony fauci. he says seeing the moments of the first health care workers getting vaccinated is bittersweet. >> we're really now starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel that is ultimately going to get us through this. we know we're going to be able to put this behind us but in the meantime, we still have a struggle ahead of us. so, we've got to get people vaccinated as quickly and as expeditiously as we possibly can. >> dr. fauci says that he believes getting the u.s. to herd immunity will require at least 75% of the population to be vaccinated. you can see his entire interview

but not tomorrow evening. here's a look at your commute mostly cloudy but dry. san jose 87 looking north towards the airport. pretty good light breezes and mass transit and watch out for the patchy fog up in the north bay and thankfully the visibility at our reporting stations hasn't been dangerously low most of the morning. hang around, though, through the entire morning commute. wednesday through thursday morning, we'll have some areas of light rain before the main event arrives tomorrow night with moderate rain likely for most of us, but a very small window. you could see tonight through tomorrow morning there's some showers off the north bay coast and those will rotate into northern sonoma county and mendocino while the rest of us a mixture of sun and clouds. clouds on the increase and notice not until 10:00 when we have yellows, oranges and reds. moderate to downpour along that cold front and notice how quickly this moves. by 5:00, most of that steady, heavy rain for sure is gone.

new this morning, san jose firefighters are trying to get a house fire under control. it started just before 4:00 this morning near goodyear street. the red cross is helping four people and one tog who are displaced and crews are trying to find two other dogs and a cat. residents told firefighters there was an electrical fire where there christmas tree was. one firefighter had to be taken to the hospital with minor injuries and one resident treated for smoke inhalation on the scene. today san francisco supervisors vomeeting to vote o an ordance to evict homeless residents out of hotels. currently the city has more than 2,000 experiencing homelessness

under way to give higher priority for california's 800,000 farm workers. a uc berkeley study found farm workers tested positive at a rate that is three times higher than the overall state population. the assembly agriculture committee and state lawmakers have made an appeal to governor newsom. they are asking that the group gets the same priority as teachers, police officers and firefighters. >> you look at the way farm workers live and intergenerational housing and critically overcrowded housing and this impacts their families. it threatens these communities. >> even if priority is given, farm workers told uc researchers only half of them would actually get vaccinated. the other half are worried about side effects or they don't trust the government. covid-19 vaccinations are now under way across the u.s. in fact, you saw the first one happen right here on abc7 yerld morning. today the bay area joins the vaccination effort and that's

you'll need the sunglasses. partly cloudy with the high clouds and seasonal temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. hazardous surf and king tides through at least tomorrow and our next storm will bring us a good soaking but a quick soaking tomorrow night. that's why it's a one on the storm impact scale. as far as temperatures right now it's 40 in redwood city and 42 in menlo park and mid to upper 40s for the rest of the peninsula and low to mid 40s in the south bay, most of the east bay shore, san francisco 48, the warm spot. mid 30s to low 40s in the east bay inland neighborhood. upper 30s to mid 40s with that fog up in the north bay. so, here's a look at your temperatures at 56 in half moon bay will be the cool spot. 60 in morgan hill. san jose, concord, fairfield and also santa rosa. tonight, mid to upper 30s in our inland valleys. low to mid 40s. a little more cloud cover, especially up in the north bay. and along the coast and a few sprinkles possible and drizzle in the higher elevations especially in the north bay. i want to go back and show you
