numbers that we hear every day. >> as you know there's still a lot of skepticism about the vaccine. i was just talking to a couple members of our crew here. the basic question is, how can we be sure it's safe when it was developed so quickly? >> you know, george, that's a great question. the speed was not at all at the sacrifice of safety. the speed was the reflection of extraordinary advances in the science of vaccine platform technology. to be able to do things technically in months that sometime ago, five, ten years ago may have taken several years. in addition, the extraordinary investment -- when i say investment, i'm talking hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars in getting the vaccine ready to be distributed as soon as it was proven to be safe and effective. so people understandably are skeptical about the speed, but we have to keep emphasizing speed means the science was extraordinary that got us here.
7:13 am
>> president-elect biden has named you his chief medical adviser. you're still serving with the current administration. how do you straddle these two worlds, and are we seeing the cooperation we need to see on production and distribution of the vaccine? >> well, we can do both because the goal is the same, george. i mean, my goal as a physician, a scientist, a public health official -- you know, we were very deeply involved and still are with the development of the vaccine, with the development of new drugs, with the policy about getting people out there like i'm speaking with you, encouraging people to abide by the public health measures. that's not going to change. i mean, the thing is going to be the same. we still have a lot of problems out there. we still have a great challenge. so i don't see any conflict at all. >> the biden team says that president-elect biden will take the vaccine in public when you give him the green light. should that happen right away? >> i believe so, george. i mean, this is a person who very soon will be the president of the united states.

7:17 am
but i think that's the process we have, yes. >> reporter: republican congressman paul mitchell has had enough, declaring he's leaving the party over his colleagues' refusal to accept biden's win calling it, quote, disgusting and demoralizing. in state capitols across the country the electoral process playing out as it should. but the president, still backed by some of his staunchest allies, is not acknowledging his loss vowing to keep challenging the election outcome. now, biden says he is starting to hear from some republican lawmakers and he told supporters last night that seven mostly senior republicans have reached out to him to say they're looking forward to working with his incoming administration. so biden seems to think the tide is changing but while privately republicans may acknowledge biden's win, many republicans are still wary to do so publicly and to break with president trump. michael? >> thank you so much for that, mary. i know you're sitting down with vice president-elect kamala harris today. >> yeah, i'll be heading out there in just a little bit.
