afternoon. >> looking at the snowfall map, four to eight inches in philadelphia, 8 to 14 in new york city. about a foot in boston. but more than two feet of snow from the poconos through parts of new jersey and new york into southern new england. >> and the plows can barely keep up. this morning, a powerful storm packing blizzard conditions. hammering the northeast. snow piling up as much as three inches per hour in some areas. >> it sucks when all the snow is hitting your face. you know it stings a little. >> reporter: now the storm turning deadly overnight. in central pennsylvania a pileup involving up to 60 vehicles killing at least two people. 19 vehicles were involved in this crash in new york city injuring six people. officers on the scene making this plea. >> if you don't need to be out, stay home. >> reporter: this morning millions of people from new york to boston and down to philadelphia are being told to stay off the roads. >> i tell you, it looks pretty bad so far. if it keeps on coming down, but i think it changes, breaks up

the monotony of things. >> reporter: at the airports hundreds of flights for today already cancelled. >> be safe. we've had a tough year. this is one way i guess to ring out the old year and ring in the new, but the most important thing we can do as we approach the holiday is get through the storm safely. >> reporter: in the meantime, some schools are being praised for canceling virtual classes today because of the storm. a superintendent in west virginia explained his decision writing, for generations families have greeted the first snow day of the year with joy. go build a snowman. and a school district in indiana also canceled virtual classes telling students their assignments include playing in the snow, practice the skills of estimation and measurement when throwing snowballs. a fun lesson there. we'll take a closer look at today's forecast in about five minutes. now to the other breaking headline overnight, just hours before fda advisers decide whether to green light a second coronavirus vaccine, the nation has set a new record in the daily number of covid deaths. but there is some good news. it turns out hospitals will be

able to vaccinate more people than they thought. overnight officials in alaska revealing a second allergic reaction to the pfizer vaccine. the patient developing mild symptoms minutes after getting the shot. the reaction coming just hours after we learned a different health worker in alaska with no known drug allergies suffered an anaphylactic reaction. >> she was feeling short of breath. her heart rate was elevated, and she had a red flushed rash over her face and torso. >> reporter: still doctors call this a minor setback and insist the vaccine is safe for the overwhelming majority of americans. it comes amid fears of a post-christmas covid surge colliding with the fallout from thanksgiving gatherings. >> our hospitals are under siege and our model shows no end in sight. the worst is still before us. >> reporter: more than 3,400 americans died from covid in just the last 24 hours. another record high. that's one person dying every 25

seconds. one-third of those deaths coming in the south. >> they always say, you know, something is underlying and it's not true. it's not true. >> reporter: ambulances waiting up to six hours to offload patients. this l.a. hospital is at 300% capacity. >> we have 60 patients right now that have been admitted to the hospital, and we are entirely full upstairs, and so they are in a gurney or a chair somewhere in a hallway waiting. >> reporter: but now fda advisers are just hours away from reviewing moderna's vaccine for emergency use potentially giving the u.s. a second option and millions of additional shots. >> moderna certainly will be available soon, have the same level of efficacy, the same safety profile and virtually everything the same. >> reporter: meanwhile, hospitals are finding a surprise source of extra vaccine. each vial of pfizer's vaccine is meant to contain at least five

doses, but hospitals are now realizing once those vials are thawed, some contain enough vaccine to deliver a sixth or even seventh dose. the news coming as we learn more about when more americans can get their shot. >> in february it will become available in cvs and walgreens. >> reporter: "operation warp speed" leaders saying most seniors in the u.s. should be fully vaccinated by march. in the meantime, former new jersey governor chris christie is now issuing this plea to wear a mask. >> lying in isolation in icu for seven days, i thought about how wrong i was to remove my mask at the white house. >> reporter: but the issue remains divisive. the mayor of dodge city, kansas, has resigned over threats she received over a mask mandate. >> i just became afraid of any possible actions that could take place. >> and we've learned vice president mike pence will publicly receive the covid vaccine tomorrow. president-elect biden will follow early next week. let's move to capitol hill now where lawmakers are close to

reaching a deal on a covid relief package, and that could mean checks for most americans soon. abc's andrew dymburt is in washington with the new details from overnight. andrew, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth. yeah, you know, we've learned that the deal being hammered out on capitol hill does include another round of stimulus checks but americans may be disappointed to learn that that amount is probably going to be less than expected. the deal that's being worked out is likely to include a $600 to $700 payment for most people. that's half the amount people got back in the spring. the bill also includes an extra $300 per week in unemployment benefits and billions for small business loans and also extends protections against evictions and republicans and democrats are sounding optimistic that a deal will finally be reached. >> i think it is in the oven being baked as we speak and i hope it comes out soon. >> we are close to an agreement. it's not a done deal yet, but we are very close. >> reporter: and here's what's

not included in the deal, money for state and local aid which democrats wanted and protections for businesses hit by pandemic-related lawsuits which republicans wanted. now, talks resume today and senate majority leader mitch mcconnell is telling senators to be prepared to work through the weekend if necessary. kenneth. >> time is of the essence. andrew dymburt in washington, thank you. the fbi says it foiled a 9/11-style terror plot. a man from kenya is accused of hijacking a plane and crash it into a skyscraper here in the u.s. authorities say the 30-year-old got flight training in the philippines and was trying to get a visa to come to the u.s. they believe he is a member of the al shabaab terror group which is reportedly behind a wave of attacks after president trump moved the u.s. embassy in israel to jerusalem. the justice department is expected to unseal new charges in connection with the 1988 bomb of pan am flight 103 over lockerbie, scotland, 189 americans died. the charges will be against a bomb expert from libya. monday is the 32nd anniversary of the bombing.

google is facing a new antitrust lawsuit. ten states accuse the company of using its power to overcharge for advertising. the justice department has filed a separate suit against google claiming a monopoly over search services. all right, let's turn back now to our top story, the weather. here's a closer look at your thursday forecast. good morning. we continue to track the big powerful storm across the northeast. many locations dealing with dangerous travel conditions across pennsylvania, new york into new england into the morning and afternoon. snowfall rates between one and three inches. there will be many locations throughout the region getting accumulations over 12 inches, the big picture for the northeast shows most of the i-95 corridor from philadelphia towards portland, maine, with that snow. i'm marvin gomez with your accuweather forecast.

back now with officers dressed up as santa and his elf helping to bust some alleged drug traffickers in peru. police say they arrested five members of a drug gang. they brought santa and his helper along to add an element of surprise, and it worked. now to chicago where police got the wrong address and raided the home of a woman who was changing her clothes at the time. what happened next was all caught on camera and is sparking outrage. the mayor is now apologizing.

here's abc's andrea fujii. >> reporter: this morning, chicago's mayor apologizing after police body camera video shows officers raiding the wrong home. >> i live by myself. >> reporter: the video shows anjanette young undressed and later wrapped in a blanket for 40 minutes as chicago police executed a search warrant in february 2019. >> this is not right. i don't even know what you're doing. >> reporter: now she plans to sue the officers involved and the city. young blasting mayor lori lightfoot after city lawyers went to court in an attempt to stop news organizations from getting access to video of the raid. >> i told my friends to vote for you. i believed in you as a black woman. >> this isn't about the protective order. this is about a cover-up. >> reporter: a judge denied lightwood's administration's atrement to try to stop the release of the footage. now the mayor calling for accountability and reforms. >> i am deeply sorry and
